2 2018 Afternoon Tea Report On Friday 6 April it was a pleasure to welcome 80 Former Pupils and Guests to the School for a fantastic afternoon of conversation, stories, laughter and, of course, a cream tea. As always it is a highlight of our year here in the Development Office, to see old faces coming back again and welcoming new ones too - It is always good to see everyone and listen to tales of mischief from years gone by. This year our longest serving Alumni was from the Class of I wonder if the former staff of Truro High School for Girls know about the rope that was left dangling out of the boarding house window for our boys to pull to alert the girls that it was safe to come out and go for a swim? As always Jo Wood put on a fantastic display of photos, magazines and reports from the Archives, for everyone to look at, including photos of the attendees when they were at school. I was also delighted to be able to provide such a positive update on the progress of the Foundation s Bursary Appeal. Not only have we received support for two further 100% bursaries, but the combined generosity of a group of former pupils means we are able to fund a further partial bursary. I am extremely grateful to all the former pupils who have donated and encouraged by the wonderful messages of support with which those donations have been made. On behalf of Katy and Jo, I would, again, like to thank everyone who attended and made the afternoon so fun. We hope to see you all again very soon for any one of our TSFPA events. However, if you simply want to come back into school for a look around and see what s new - and what isn t - you are more than welcome to visit. Just let Katy or Jo know and we will happily give you a tour! 7 2018 Easter Sports Football This year on Saturday 31st March former pupils returned to school to play the current School football team. It was a well matched game with a great atmosphere and feeling of camaraderie between the current and former pupils. Graham Hooper, Head of Football said it was: A great morning seeing all the boys. The game finished with a score of 4:2 the former pupils coming out victorious. The first goal was scored by the 2017 captain Tom Rimmington with a brilliant Volley from 25 yards. The current school team equalized when a penalty was converted by Mike Austin after a clear penalty decision was given be the referee. The 2nd half was an even affair when Danny Park converted an excellent move to put the Former Pupils back in front The 1st XI responded again with some flowing moves, and it paid off when Mike Austin finished an excellent move. In previous years the Former pupils have been known to tire towards the end of the game. However, the quality of this team became stronger and with former pupil and captain Gus Angilley (CO16) entering the field it was always going to be a tough last 20 minutes for the current team. It was Angilley who put the former pupils in front after an excellent finish. He then sealed the win after being brought down in the box and then converting the penalty. A deserved 4:2 win for the former pupils, but a much bigger advert for football at Truro School that has grown from strength to strength.. Glynn Hooper Head of Football A total of 30 players turned up on a Easter Saturday to fulfil this annual fixture. The development office would like to thank everyone who attended, with a particular thank you to Mr Nic who managed the former pupil team, Mr Hooper, and Chris Rowe for representing the TSFPA on the day.

8 Trystan Hitchens (CO96) A Career at Rolls-Royce After leaving School in 1996 Trystan embarked on studying for a Master s Degree in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Bath. When we asked him what his career aspirations were then he told us: I always had a desire to become a pilot with aspirations to join the British Airways sponsored pilot scheme or the Royal Air Force but further education trumped both of these at the time. During his time at university Trystan joined Rolls-Royce plc based in Bristol as an undergraduate trainee and was heavily involved in a jet engine upgrade programme for the RAF fleet of Jaguar ground attack aircraft. Trystan returned to university following his sandwich year and completed his degree in He subsequently returned to Rolls-Royce as a Graduate and joined the Graduate Training Scheme based in Derby. Since then Trystan has had many fantastic opportunities and has worked in many different parts of the company and also had the opportunity to visit many different countries across the globe. Trystan is still with Rolls- Royce today where he is Vice President - Sales which sees him selling aircraft engines and associated services for armed forces all over the world. We Asked Trystan if he has any personal highlights from his career so far: Personally I am hugely proud to work for a UK company with an internationally recognised brand reputation which is synonymous with quality and being in the very fortunate position to be selling our products to a global customer base. When we asked Trystan what advice he would offer anyone considering a similar career he told us that studying STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) are vital to the UK economy and will give a great range of career options and said they are a hugely valuable asset whichever career path you take. Trystan also went on to advise our current students to mix with industry professionals as much as possible at the earliest opportunity and said: My door is always open- you can find me on LinkedIn Outside of work Trystan got married to Victoria in 2013 and they now have two children, Poppy who is nearly three and new edition Jack who is just 3 months. Trystan still has family in Cornwall including his parents and grandfather Kenneth Hitchens (CO39) and tries to visit Cornwall as much as possible but says it is never as often as he would like, but remains a great lover of the outdoors now where he lives in the Cotswolds. Trystan is also a keen Skier and when he has the time enjoys heading to the mountains. Trystan said that he enjoyed his time at school and often reflects upon his schooldays, standout memories being the school workshops with Mr Tall, Mr Keam and Mr Shore; outdoor pursuits at Minions with Mr Golds; participating in the Duke of Edinburgh under the leadership of Miss Leathes and the redevelopment of the lower quad which earned him a Grade A in A Level Design. Trystan also made the school lectern under the supervision of Mr Tall and he says it gives him a great sense of pride when he sees it still in use at speech day. 9 Kiani Pay Netball In the Navy The development office always love hearing updates on our Alumni and were delighted to hear about Kiani s success with her netball in the Navy. In September 2017 Kiani was selected to represent the Navy 1st Team, after this she then played at the inter services tournament against teams form the Army and the RAF. At this tournament there were selectors for both England Netball teams and for the UK armed forces team. Kiani was selected among 16 others from across the three services to represent the UK armed forces. Sine being selected Kiani has travelled to Guernsey and played against their senior B team, Their Under 19 s team and their men s team of which they won all three. This week Kiani and the team are travelling to London to play at the copper box (The stadium built for the Olympics) where she will be playing the under 21 Mavericks which a Super league team. Good Luck Kiani! We asked Kiani what she enjoyed best about playing netball in the Navy: Being selected to represent the UK Armed Forces is a great honour and provides multiple opportunities to play netball at a high level against international oppositions. It s fantastic to be training and playing with military girls with such great talent and provides a brilliant work life balance to maintain positivity and enthusiasm when I m back on the ward nursing. 10 Family Announcements Mrs Gillian (Gill) TROMANS TS /03/2018 It is with great sadness that Truro School announces the passing of Gill Tromans on the 8th March. Our thoughts are with her children Sarah and Andrew, both former students at Truro School. Mr David CROWLE TS /07/ /03/2018 Truro School are saddened to report the passing of Mr David Crowle. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

Photo requests Does anyone have a copy of the 1973 school photo that could be borrowed to make a replacement for one eaten by an over-enthusiastic puppy? There s ones from 1980 and 1985 in the Archive, but I ve been asked for one between these dates. Were any photos taken of the Truro School Society s Spring Fair in March 1985?
