1 DIARY DATES! What does VOWA do? This is not supposed to be a trick question! How about all members joining in with at least one of these VOWA social activities during 2013? Please invite potential members to join us. By all means suggest additional activities at the AGM. When the VOWA web site is fully functional, the theory is that it will be easier to communicate details with most of our membership by the touch of a button Aussie Post takes a bit longer. To register your interest: contact Lochy or Kathy AGM and Special General Meeting President McPherson and the VOWA Committee Wish to invite YOU to join us for the VOWA AGM and luncheon to be held at ****where? What time? What date? Cost?****, drinks at bar prices Catch the second last carriage on the train from Southern Cross station.***time? The event organisers always appreciate another willing worker on the day as well. Also modesty has prevented Roger from admitting to his crucial role as event organiser. Well done everybody! Kathy Tour both the MCG and National Sports Museum with Lunch. Date and costs to be advised. A $20 deposit will be accepted to secure your place extra monies will be collected on the day if necessary. The date and entry fees depend on our numbers and the proportion of seniors and non-seniors attending. Early birds get the opportunity to vote for the meal options. 4 21st FLYING DOCTOR ROWATHON set RECORDS GALORE Roger Wilson Rogers Trophy for fastest crew with changes! A record 220 rowers from all over Australia competed in 22 boats in four stages on Saturday October 6 th It was Australia s biggest rowing charity event by far Australia s longest rowing race of 82km in a day! Over $70,000 was raised during the 2012 flying doctor rowathon. Fundraising was aided very much by everyday hero website for supporters to donate to the flying doctor with the funds this year going to a mobile dentist service initiative by the flying doctor in north west Victoria. For the previous twenty years over $160,000 had been donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The Wentworth community really got behind this year s event especially the Wentworth Rowing Club who supported their captain Sam Cross & his committee serving breakfast to over two hundred before the rowing marathon got under 7.30am and then after racing finished Wentworth Rowing Club members served a sit down two course roast dinner to 250 people a magnificent performance by the Wentworth Club Yarra Yarra s Mighty Titl8 were awarded The Jack Joel Trophy for overall participation, time & fundraising. Yarra Yarra was also ably represented at the inaugural rowathon. Have a look at the photos in their trophy cabinet! The Robinvale community who have hosted the event on most of the occasions it has been held to date continue to be great supporters of the flying doctor rowathon despite their rowing club being closed a few years ago Page4 Single sculler Rick Kranen from Coomera Rowing & Recreation Club on the Gold Coast took out The Ian Law Trophy for the fastest time, with no change covering the 82 km in four stages in six hours twenty minutes and fifteen seconds Rick beat an eight who had crew changes! Next best was Pembroke Masters Eight from Adelaide in 6 hr 28min who took out the Col Ian law (former Hawthorn VFL premiership player) and his wife Barbara run the Avoca B&B up river of this year s rowathon on the Darling was a member of the original eight which started the event 21 years ago was thrilled to see the growth since those formative years & thinks it can only grow further in years ahead!the flying doctor rowathon committee under President Graham Pilley & Chairman Bob Symons are congratulated for organising such a unique & successful rowing event & raising an extraordinary $70,000 plus for the flying doctor rowathon.
