Autumn 2018: THE SECOND CUT Rideau Lakes Golf and Country Club News Website: Facebook: Board of Directors President: Michael McKean Vice President: Ken Morris Treasurer: Ken Morris Secretary: JoAnn Mehr Activities Chair: Ruth Hawley Grounds Chair: Dennis Greenwood House Chair: Dolores Beckermann Past President: Janet Crane Director: Eric Steigerwald Director: Peter Leduc Club Manager: Rob Dunfield Grounds Superintendent: Aaron Steeves Presidents Report Autumn 2018: W ow have we ever had a steaming HOT summer! The timing was perfect to get a number of new golf carts as their usage is up significantly over prior years. fewer people wanted to walk this year with lots of rounds played in the mornings and many open tee times in the hottest part of the day. Don t forget to re-new your 19 membership by Nov 1st to save $50. It s like making a double digit return over 6 months (sort of) & helps the club thru the winter months. Enjoy the Fall colours. Michael Have you tried out the new Practice net? It s a great way to loosen up before you tee off. Feel free to dispose of your junky old golf balls there. Our club house is looking better than ever and the Grounds Crew have been able to keep our course in top condition despite the oppressive heat. Well done! Remember our Annual General meeting on Sept. 30th (Noon) where you can get all the details of what your club is doing and planning and ask your pointed questions. Gary 1

From the Front Desk: Year End Report - Second Cut - Fall 2018 O n behalf of all the staff and Board members, I want to express my appreciation to all the volunteers for their service, commitment and dedication to the Clubs success. Our volunteers provide many hours of work that saves the Club thousands of dollars. Without their contribution, the cost for membership could be much higher. It is with deep respect and appreciation that I extend this thank you. As well, I want to extend my thanks to all staff - kitchen, grounds and pro shop. Their excellent customer service is appreciated by our members and guests and is evident in the returning green fees we see from non-members. Great staff make a great golfing experience. Pro shop revenues and kitchen revenues were up this year over last year. Expenses were within budget. This is a positive outcome given the fact the hot, humid afternoons literally saw an empty golf course. Last year we struggled with rain, this year it was the heat and humidity. We are definitely weather dependant. The Board continues to prioritize purchases for the Club even though they seem to be a moving target at times. This year we initiated the purchase of a new to us fairway mower and nine golf carts that proved to have economical savings. If there are any wish list items members have please let your manager know and it will get added to the 2019 list. accessible and enjoyable place to work. We will continue to improve as the future unfolds to keep our gem a great golfing destination. Respectfully, Rob Dunfield, Manager house committee had a very quiet 2018 sea- House Committee Autumn Report: T he son. Aside from regular maintenance of the club house and kitchen/bar, our expenses were minimal. We do have a wish list for 2019: 1) replacing the two air conditioning units. 2) new carpet for the club house. 3) a larger flat screen television. If you have any suggestions regarding the club house, kitchen or bar, please speak to our club manager Rob or a member of the house committee. Continue to enjoy your clubhouse before the end of the season. Dolores Beckermann, On behalf of the House committee: Michael, Janet, Jo- Ann, Peter, Rob. I am proud to have been the Manager of Rideau Lakes over these past 10 years. I want to thank all members, staff and guests for making Rideau Lakes a comfortable, 2

GROUNDS REPORT: T he Grounds Committee for 2018 included Michael McKean; Peter Leduc; Rob Dunfield, Manager; Aaron Steeves, Superintendent, and Dennis Greenwood, Chair. A long hot summer and many issues with the watering system were more than adequately looked after by the Grounds Crew. There were a minimal number of equipment failures and most were looked after by staff. The committee updated the equipment list with replacement costs and priorities with scheduled replacement dates. It is hoped that the Greens Mower will be replaced in New Tees on #5 were put into play and a new Tee on #7 was built and should be ready for next season. Several trees were lost this summer and trees from the nursery will be transplanted into place this fall as weather permits. It is recommended that the nursery be restocked next spring. There are still far too many divots not being replaced on the fairways. If you see a divot while playing, replace it if you can, or fill it with seeded sand from your cart. We can only do so much to encourage Green Fee players to repair divots. As members we have to take care of our club to keep it in pristine condition. Finally, we were able to update our fleet of carts with nine 4 year-old carts and hope to add to those next season. Enjoy the rest of this season. Have a safe winter and we hope to see you all again next summer. Dennis Greenwood, Grounds Committee 3

AUTUMN ACTIVITIES REPORT 2018: W hat a hot and busy season! The 2018 golf season has flown by! The calendar was packed full of activities which were enjoyed by many members and their guests. Hopefully, MATCH PLAY has been completed at publishing time. The winners will be recognized at the AGM. Our two final events are close at hand: the AGM/ CLOS- ING SCRAMBLE is on Sun. Sept. 30 and our THANKSGIV- ING nine n dine is on Fri. Oct. 5. CHRISTMAS in AUGUST, hosted by Peter Leduc and Sue Foley-Leduc, was once again a huge success. The game was interesting and fun, the trivia contest challenging, the meal delicious and the decorations and gifts made for a real Christmassy feeling. The participants were full of the Christmas spirit, giving very generously to the Delta Food Bank. Our second annual RIDEAU DERBY, hosted by Michael McKean and Nancy Abell and assisted by Dennis Greenwood, was a roaring success. Congratulations to our winning horse and jockey, Tim Dopson and Vicki Young. This has been a great year at RLG&CC. Once again, I can t help but thank our wonderful STAFF (Grounds, Kitchen & Pro Shop) and each and every VOLUNTEER for an amazing job done in keeping our little gem on the Rideau the special place that it is. If you weren t able to join in the happenings or to volunteer in any way this year, please make an effort to do so next year. Every member is important to us and we want you to feel that you belong in a big way. Next year s proposed CALENDAR is included. Please mark the dates on yours so you won t miss out. The Board of Directors was pleased to host the VOLUN- TEER DINNER for our amazing volunteers. What does it say about a club when over half of its members volunteer in some way?! Respectfully submitted, Ruth Hawley and committee: Michael, Dolores, Eric, JoAnn and Rob. The CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP played this year with the largest number of participants in recent years. It was two days of fierce but friendly competition and lots of fun as well. Congratulations to our club champions, Ben Ryan and Enid Robertson, and to all of our winners. The complete list is attached. Our LADIES INTERSECTIONAL TEAM represented us well at Garrison this year. Thank you Ladies for making us proud. Speaking of proud, the members of our club have made us all very proud this year. A lot of fund raising was done this year for charities and for our club. CHARITABLE DO- NATIONS were given to: Kingston Street Mission (205 pairs of socks and $256) Breast Cancer ($13,500) Elgin Food Bank ($675 in Loblaw cards) Delta Food Bank ($920) They say that charity begins at home and thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, donations were made to the club from these events: Fashion Show $1260; Book Sale $ 775; Rideau Derby $ 125. Along with all of that the Ladies and Men s Leagues each donated $1000 to pay for an engineer s drawing for future expansion of the deck. The Men have been playing their HOME and HOME games with Rivendell and Evergreen. At the time of writing, these have not been completed. Good luck! 4

RLG&CC Ladies League has had a very suc- RIDEAU LAKES LADIES LEAGUE 2018: T he cessful season. Our second annual fund raiser FORE THE LOVE OF GOLF was a great success again this year. The themed baskets were a fantastic hit many thanks to all the ladies who participated, both providing the baskets and buying the tickets. The Ladies League was able to donate $1, to Rideau Lakes Golf & CC for engineered drawings for future possible improvements to our club house. Monday, June 10, 2018 is the date of next year s FORE THE LOVE OF GOLF mark your calendars. We are truly enjoying this concept which allows women of all levels of golf to participate. Handicaps are not required and it is open to members, friends, relatives and especially The Twisted Sisters. It is an afternoon of fun including dinner. Karen Metz is the Chair of a fine tuned committee. TWISTED SISTERS: T he opening day for Twisted Sisters of 2018 was April 30th and we had 29 ladies out to golf. Since then we have played 11 times on Mondays. Our largest turnout was 59 golfers and the lowest number was 5. Not even weather deters us! The meals are always mouth-watering and such a variety. So come on out, eat, drink and play. Remember: Twisted Sisters is open to all ladies. You do not have to be a member of RLGCC. Bring a friend, bring a neighbour, the more the merrier. See you Monday at 4:00 p.m. If you have any questions please call Chris Kirby at or RLGCC at Submitted by Chris Kirby So, still lots of excitement and more to come! As your outgoing President I look forward to seeing you all back at Rideau Lakes Golf & CC next Spring. Your Ladies League in 2019 will be in the capable hands of Sandy Murray. I m sure we are in for some fun times with Sandy and her team. In the meantime have a safe, healthy and happy fall and winter. 6 Rideau Lakes Men s League 2018: F ifty-one men took part in this year s Men s League - 7 played 9 Holes each week and the rest played 18. Only one back 9 was lost to rain all season, a big improvement from last season. This year prizes were awarded each week for the Low Net Score as well as most Points. A prize was also given to a weekly skins winner, if there was one. This prize had to be won outright. There were no prizes for honourable mentions. There were three special events through the summer which seemed to be enjoyed by all who took part. Our 50/50 helped to keep our bank account full and we will be making a contribution to a special project for the club. The committee has made every effort to award prizes to Low Net winners so that everyone has a chance to win, not just those who have a low handicap. At our final event on September 11 th we had a handicapped event with three flights and a 9 hole group. The low net winners for the day were: 9Holes -Dick Mulville; C Group - Terry Hamilton, B Group - Moe Demers and A Group - Phil Ellis. Last but by far not least, this year s winner of the Bush Bond Memorial Trophy for contributions to the Men s League was awarded to Jim Blair for his many years of work and support to the League. Dennis Greenwood, Men s League Committee Treasurers Report for 2018: T he financial statements for this year have been comparable to last year. Last year saw an operating surplus of $6985 before amortization expenses. The one positive item this year is an increase in revenue from the power cart rentals. Is it the hot humid days that make golfers use a power cart instead of walking? On some of those hot days there were not enough power carts to meet demand. Consequently the club has acquired 9 additional carts. The 9 carts are refurbished 2014 Club Car models and are financed through a lease arrangement with a buyout option at the end of the lease. The 9 new carts allowed the club to increase our fleet from 30 to 36 carts and to sell 3 of the older carts that were showing their age. The great weather this summer has resulted in very few days of lost revenue due to poor playing conditions. The club operates on a very tight operating budget and any shortfalls in revenue usually result in deferrals of either the purchase of new equipment or making improvements to the golf course and club house. Every year the Board of Directors prioritizes which capital items are to be purchased. In the past major capital improvements have been financed by the club taking on a long term debt. It has been 7 years since a bank loan was required. This loan was used to pay for the club house roof, to purchase a new greens mower and debt consolidation. Since then the club has reduced the overall long term debt by $77,000. The club has also purchased capital assets worth $19921 over the last 5 years. Thanks goes out to the members who support the club, to the wonderful staff who make this such a great club and to the many guests who enjoy the use of the facilities. These 3 groups contribute to the financial wellness of the Rideau Lakes Golf and Country Club. Ken Morris, Treasurer 6

Keeping Up-To-Date with Activities: In order to help our members keep current with the Activities going on at our Club, we rely on s, the Club s website and our Facebook page. Thanks to Stu Paterson, our webmaster, all our current and future events are listed along with some of the latest Rideau Lakes Club news. From its humble beginning just a few years ago, the site continues to gain in popularity with impressive year over year growth. We are now averaging several hundred monthly individual visitors and these same visitors return to view the site an average of 12 times every month and these visits are not just during the summer months but continue over the winter too. Something new has been added to our Facebook page to allow people to click on the new "call now" button and connect directly from their smartphone to the Pro Shop. Now people can quickly book their tee times or sign up for our many great events. Right beside the new "call now" button is the " like" button and if people haven't yet "liked" our page they can click there and be guaranteed notification of events, announcements and specials. The web site can be found at: and has links to all our other venues as well. Thanks to Gary Bowlby, our club also has its own Facebook Page which can be found at: We encourage everyone to visit it regularly and add your comments on it. Want to see our latest event pictures? Want to see how professional your golf swing looks? Thanks to our Club photographer, Gary Robertson, you can go directly to our pictures on our website where you can view and even download for free any pictures you choose of yourself or your golfing partners. 10

On behalf of the membership at large, we would like to offer a big THANK YOU to our Club Executive for their excellent work on our behalf. We enjoy an amazing facility. Congratulations on a great job. Well done!..the editor 11
