1 EMGA Update 09 May 2013 No Memorial Tournament Honorees As you know, our first tournament of the year is our Memorial where we recognize our current and past EMGA members who have passed away the previous year. This year we regret to announce that three of our members have passed away. For those of you who were able to attend the breakfast prior to the tournament last on April 25 th, you were able to read about them. Members of their families were invited to attend the breakfast and fortunately, this year, Mike s wife, Penny Oshirak was able to join us. Philip Allison Mike Oshirak Wes Siegrist Philip Allison was born in Akron, Ohio on June 18, He attended public school in Akron and graduated from the University of Akron in January 1950 with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He later attended the University of Southern California. He graduated with a Master's Degree in MSSM. He served in the military in WWII, reenlisted in the service in March 1950 and retired in July 1975 after a distinguished career in the Strategic Air Command. His awards for distinguished service commendation were many. His last military assignment was as an air operation specialist with the 14th Air Division at Beal AFB, CA. After retiring from the military service he became a financial adviser for Merrill Lynch in Colorado Springs. He retired from Merrill Lynch January 1, Mr. Allison was a long time member of the Al Kaly Shrine of Pueblo. Mr. Allison was past commander of the Al Kaly Legion of Honor and was emeritus of both Al Kaly Legion Honor and the International Legion of Honor. Mr. Allison was an avid golfer and bowler, he enjoyed being with people. Mr. Allison is survived by his wife, Louise of 62 years. Michael Mike Oshirak was born on 22 October, 1941 and passed away on 2 November, He served in the Air Force for 30 years and was a long time resident of Colorado Springs and member of the EMGA Wesley Wes Siegrist, age 77, a devoted husband and father, died peacefully in his sleep at home on September 2, 2012 surrounded by Sharon Siegrist, his loving wife of 54 years, his son Michael and daughterin-law Helena Siegrist. Wes was born November 7, 1934 in Hutchinson, Kansas and has been a resident of Colorado Springs since Wes served 20 years in the United States Air Force with dignity and upon completion of his military service he joined Farmers Insurance as an independent agent for the next 22 years before he retired. Besides his family, Wes enjoyed tennis, golf and the many pleasures of traveling. Wes is also survived by his granddaughter Shannon, her husband Christopher Dugie and great granddaughter Teanna. 1

2 Match Play Sign up now for the EMGA Match Play Tournament! A lot of last year s players have not signed up to date. Note the field is open to the first 64 sign ups so don t be left out! Sign up is open until 10 May; signup sheets are available at the Pro Shop Desk, and posted on the EMGA bulletin board in the men s locker room. Signups can also be accomplished through the EMGA web site by clicking the sign up button. The signup button takes you to an that is sent to me I tried it and it works fine. So don t miss out; me directly at sandbunker@q.com to sign up. The entry fee is $10. Prize money in the form of credits is paid from the entry fee. Payment of the entry fee can be made by depositing a check made out to the EMGA in the EMGA box in the men s locker room; mailing it to the EMGA Treasurer, Phil Andreski, Pineycove Ct., Colorado Springs, CO or to Marty Bunker, Match Play Chairman, 3505 Chico Circle, Colorado Springs, CO Open Play/Open Play Competition Table Volunteers Thanks to the great volunteer turnout, we have only three dates needing volunteers to man the OPC sign in tables: both shifts 22 Aug; 5 Sep and 19 Sep. Tournament Update Sorry that we are better prognosticators of the weather but we had to postpone the Spring ABCD Scramble Tournament which we will reschedule at a later date. Our next tournament will be on 23 May which will be the Modified Stableford. This will be individual competition with skins. The sign-in sheet is located in the EMGA book in the EGC Pro Shop. You may sign up using the EMGA web site. If you do not receive a prompt reply, please contact Jim Doukas at jdoukas2@aol.com. There are no major changes to our playing protocols this year. We continue to support the Play Forward concept. We assign tees based upon handicap index: 10.9 and below to green tees, 11.0 to 22.9 to the white tees and 23.0 and above to the yellow tees. That said, we do allow players to move to a forward tee but they must notify the Tournament Committee prior to scoring. If you want to play forward on continuing basis, please notify the Committee, as it helps in our preparation. We pay net Skins for the entire field. Gross Skins will be by flights. Flight 1 will normally be Green Tees. Note that that this may include players from White Tees as an exception. Flights 2 and 3 will be White Tees and Flight 4 will be Yellow Tees. Most Golf Clubs have a local requirement that players must participate in a number of prior events before they can participate in Club Championships. The Board discussed this at our last meeting and the Tournament Committee agrees with this concept. This year we are encouraging our members to do this on a voluntary basis as the season has already started. Next year members will have to participate in at least 4 EMGA events to be eligible to play in our Kregel Championship Tournament. Open Play/Open Play Competition The next OP/OPC is scheduled for May 16 th. 2

3 Rules Tip TOPIC: Difference Between Water Hazard and Lateral Water Hazard This is a rules tip that is recycled from 2010 because it is important to understand the difference between the two types of hazards and the relief options that apply to each. In order to be eligible to take relief from a hazard, you must either know or be virtually certain that your ball came to rest in the hazard. This is pretty easy to determine if you see the ball splash in a pond, but is more difficult if you only see the ball heading in the general direction of the hazard and it is possible that it came to rest in long grass or bushes outside the hazard lines. If you are not virtually certain that the ball is in the hazard, you must proceed under the lost ball rule (Rule 27-1). Water Hazard (Yellow Stakes): Water hazards are marked by yellow stakes and/or lines. These hazards are normally directly between the green and the teeing area, when playing the hole as it is designed to be played. For example, the pond on Hole # 11 on the Blue Course is a water hazard and is denoted by yellow stakes and lines. Options: (1) Play the ball as it lies. (No penalty). (2) Drop a ball as nearly as possible to the spot from where the original ball was played. (One stroke penalty). (3) Drop a ball behind the water hazard, keeping the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot where the ball is dropped. (One stroke penalty). Lateral Hazard (Red Stakes): Lateral water hazards are marked by red stakes and/or lines. These hazards are normally hazards that golfers do not have to go over when following the normal route from the teeing ground to the green. For example, the ditch to the right of Hole # 8 on the Blue Course is a lateral hazard and is denoted by red stakes and lines. Options: The same three options explained above plus two additional options: (4) Drop a ball outside the lateral hazard within two club lengths of the point where the ball entered the hazard. The ball must be dropped no closer to the hole than the entry point. (One stroke penalty). (5) Drop a ball outside the lateral hazard within two club lengths of the point on the opposite side of the hazard equidistant from the hole from the point where the ball entered the hazard. The ball must be dropped no closer to the hole than the entry point. (One stroke penalty). If you have questions, ask your friendly Rules/Handicap Committee members and we will scramble quickly to get a Rules Book and find you an answer.
