ALLEN HYUNDAI CUP The annual Allen Hyundai Cup Championship, inaugurated in 2010 (originally called The Tayani Cup) is a season-long competition held from January thru December which gives Club members the opportunity to expand their playing experience outside of their regular weekly group and compete against other members within their own handicap flight. The Championship is determined by compiling the best 5 out of 9 Flight Competition* scores from pre-identified Weekly Wednesday Tournament rounds. Points are awarded relative to how each player finishes in relation to the remainder of the field and the aggregate point total of those 5 best rounds determines the final standings. Tournament winners come from three handicapped flights: Eagle Flight (Open) Play is from the blue tees. This Flight is open to all. Birdie Flight Flights A, B and C (Indices 23.9 and Below) Play is from the regular (white) tees. Bogey Flight Flight D (Indices 24.0 to 36.4) Play is from the forward (green) tees. Note: *Flight Competitions are Weekly Wednesday Tournament rounds where foursomes are assigned by the Tournament Chairman such that members with similar handicaps play in the same group. 22

LWMGC SKILLS CHALLENGE In the Summer of 2003 while a member of the LWMGC Board, Dave Masters proposed the first The Masters Skill Challenge. The idea was to extend invitations to the eight LWMGC members holding the current 8 lowest GHIN indices. The invitations would be extended to the next low-index current member if one or more of the first selections should be unable to compete. The number of competitors has since been increased to ten. The ten events identified for the competition are: Long Drive, Short Bunker, Long Bunker, Trouble Shot, Short Chip, Pitch, Short Iron, Long Iron, Flop Shot and Long Putt. The competitors would score points from 10 (Closest) to 1 (Farthest) in proximity to the target. The highest point total at the end would be declared the Skills Challenge Champion for the year. There was no Skills Challenge in ANNUAL SKILLS CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS 2016 Glen Warkentine 2015 Mike Walo 2014 Tom Imler 2013 Jim Harada 2012 Dean Stafford 2011 Competition Not Held 2010 Dean Stafford 2009 Leo Pak 2008 Bill Brodt 2007 Han Chae 2006 Joe Saldana 2005 Curtis Teal 2004 Rich Fritsch 2003 Bob Howe 25

LWMGC SPECIAL EVENTS These activities (social events and golf tournaments) differ from the usual LWMGC weekly tournaments and Team Play events in the fact that non-club members are a central part of the event or competition. The Annual President s Ball The LWMGC Annual President s Ball began as a regular Club event in 1983 and is held each January. The event is a formal evening and hearkens back to the days of elegance and ballroom dining and dancing. The gathering is an opportunity for Club members and their wives / significant others to dressup and socialize with other Club members. Throughout the evening major tournament awards and other recognition items are presented culminating with the presentation of the Club s highest honor the President s Award presented to an outstanding Club member. 9 Memorial Tournament The Memorial Tournament started in The first year it was called the Curt Teal Memorial Tournament after one of our Club Champions who had died the year before. The tournament would honor Curt as well as all the Club s departed members. The choice of the Foundation of Laguna Woods Village to be the beneficiary of the event was at Curt's widow's request since it had been his favorite charity. The arrangement was always for the event to use his name for only one year, thereafter to be just the Memorial Tournament. The event was held for four years (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010). After a two-year hiatus, the Memorial Tournament returned to the annual rotation of special events and is now sponsored by the Laguna Woods Men s Golf Club, and for the first time in 2017, co-sponsored by Laguna Woods Village. In fact, it has become the Club s premier annual event and our major fundraiser. It is held in early May with the scramble tournament being open to the entire community as well as any friends or relatives. This annual tournament as testimony that the golfing community can be counted on to help our Village neighbors, and we believe the amount of our annual donations to the Foundation reflects that commitment. LWMGC FOUNDATION DONATIONS 2017 $43, $19, $17, $16, $14, Event Not Held 2011 Event Not Held 2010 $5, $5, $4, $4,500 Since its inception in 2007 to date, the proceeds from the annual Memorial Tournament combined with additional donations from the LWMGC membership throughout each year, the Club has contributed a total of almost $130,000 to the Foundation of Laguna Woods Village!! 27

Volunteer Appreciation Day This tournament usually held on a Saturday in early- October is the Club s way of recognizing the volunteer contributions made by Club members, their spouses, significant others and family members throughout the year. These individuals who provide support with tasks like tournament check-in, decorating, venue set-up, artwork etc. are treated to a day of golf, tournament prizes and a catered luncheon complete with cocktails. It is also a day to recognize past Club Presidents. Member-Guest Tournament The annual LWMGC Member-Guest tournament is a Saturday event scheduled in mid-august and is our Club s opportunity to showcase our outstanding golfing facilities to our non-club member golfing partners. This full-day shotgun start event includes putting contests, great tee prizes, raffle prizes and an awards banquet. 28

The Derby For the golfers who take part in the monthly tournament known as THE DERBY, most say it is one of the best Men s Club events. We play on the Thursday after Men s Club General monthly meeting on the course which is closed that week. The format is very simple. We take the low handicappers and pair them with the high ones to form two-man teams. Then it s alternate shot to the end of the hole. Depending on the number of teams involved we eliminate at least one team on each hole until we have the last team standing. In order to eliminate a team on each hole there will often be a chip-off with two or more teams to see who goes on and who gets eliminated. It s quite a spectacle to see 20+ golfers all playing a hole at the same time. We get quite a few spectators who have been heard to say this is a great game to watch. For the final event of the year we hold the ANNUAL DERBY. This results in a high turnout largely because the Men s Club enhances the pot. For the most recent year s contest we had 32 players (16 teams). This puts at least 16 golf carts on the first hole. The winning team took home $

LWMGC TEAM EVENTS These events offer members of LWMGC the opportunity to compete against other men s golf clubs in the immediate Southern California region in a variety of formats. Team events are limited field events by their nature and there obviously is not room for every Club member on the team. The LWMGC Board of Directors and the Competitions Committee use the criteria of Allen Hyundai Cup Flight Competitions, regular Weekly Wednesday and Major Tournament scores as well as past Team Play performance to narrow down the list of candidates to provide a pool that will give Laguna Woods a competitive mix of players. Note: The Scotch Scoring events (versus Costa Mesa - and Navy) are fun activities and focus more on camaraderie between clubs than ultra-competitive tournaments so the LWMGC Competition Committee considers performance in the Allen Hyundai Cup Flight Competitions, regular Weekly Wednesday and Major Tournament scores only as a partial criteria for creating the initial list of potential participants. The Club and the Competition Committee also use these team spots as a way of recognizing and rewarding these individuals for their regular support of our activities and tournaments. 30

Scotch Cup Vs. Costa Mesa Seniors In 2005 the LWMGC began an annual Home and Away series of Scotch Scoring matches against the Costa Mesa Seniors Golf Club. The squads are usually made up of eight or nine 2-man teams and the total team points scored in both matches determines the annual winner. The order of the matches rotates each year and the Scotch Cup is awarded after the final (second) match of the season. LWMGC Vs. Navy Golf Course Men s Club Based on the success of the Costa Mesa Scotch Cup matches, when the opportunity to play a similar set of Home and Away matches with the Navy Golf Course Men s Club presented itself in 2010, the LWMGC jumped at the chance to play. This is another fun event using Scotch Scoring focusing more on inter-club camaraderie than grinding competition. It is also a fairly large field event with each club normally fielding between 16 and 20 two-man teams. 31

Laguna Woods Village Cup The Laguna Woods Village Cup (originally known as the Laguna Woods Ryder Cup) has become a staple of the LWMGC s playing season. The competition was originally proposed by Dave Masters in 2005 to coincide with the biennial playing of the Ryder Cup matches. The Laguna Woods matches however would not be limited to United States players Versus United Kingdom players but would pit 20 high caliber Club members born in the USA (Team USA) against an equally stacked roster of 20 Club members who were born outside of the US (Team International). The event (scheduled in the fall) would be a way to encourage friendly intra-club competition and also give Club members a chance to play for their country. The teams are broken down into 10 two-man teams which play each other head-to head in three different nine-hole match play style competitions: Alternate Shot Better Ball Individual Match Play In 2006 the competition was formally added to the schedule and was orchestrated by PGA Professional Roger Teel. In 2012 the competition became an annual event. 32

LAGUNA WOODS MEN S GOLF CLUB LOCAL RULES USGA rules shall govern all play except as modified below. These rules shall apply to all Club sponsored tournament play. OUT OF BOUNDS - Boundary fences / walls, white stakes and inside edge (course side) of white painted lines. Chain link fence on Course 2 Hole 2 is a boundary fence. Block wall on the left near the green on Course 2 Hole 4 is also a boundary fence. Note: - The entire ball must be on or beyond the white painted line (or beyond the inside points of stakes at ground level) to be considered out of bounds; should any part of the ball be in bounds, the ball is in play. PROTECTIVE FENCES - Take swing and stance relief from protective fences, plus line of sight. May go to drop area if provided. No Penalty. Note: - A ball coming to rest near screens on the 1 st fairway, 4 th teeing area or in back of the 6 th teeing area, Course 1, may be dropped in specified ball drop areas without penalty, or line of sight relief no nearer to the hole. GROUND UNDER REPAIR - Defined by white lines. Flower Beds are to be played as ground under repair from which play is prohibited (unless marked by OB stakes). If a player s ball lies in the area, or if it interferes with the player s stance or the area of his intended swing, the player must take relief under Rule Note 1: - Ground Under Repair rule specifies that the ball doesn't have to be found in order to take free relief if players know it went into the flower bed!! 42

Ground under repair includes material piled for removal and a hole made by a green keeper, even if not so marked. Grass cuttings and other material left on the course that have been abandoned and are not intended to be removed are not ground under repair unless so marked. Note 2: - If it cannot be determined whether a pile of debris is ground under repair, in Stroke Play events the correct procedure would be to use Rule 3-3 and play two balls on that hole (one with relief and one without). The players should then find an official, such as the course's head golf professional, to make the determination after the round. In Match Play events a determination must be made on-the-spot. You can never play a second ball in this situation in Match Play. SOD SEAMS - Through the green, seams of cut turf (not the turf itself) are deemed to be ground under repair. However, interference by a seam with the player s stance is deemed not to be, of itself, interference under rule STAKED TREES - If a staked tree interferes with a player s stance or area of his intended swing, the ball must be lifted without penalty and dropped in accordance with the procedure prescribed in rule 24-2b (i). OBSTRUCTIONS: IMMOVABLE Cart paths, buildings, drainage grills, drainage ditches, valve covers, sprinkler heads, rabbit fences, control boxes and colored yardage tiles. A drop within one club length from the nearest point of relief is allowed. MOVABLE Yardage markers are treated as movable obstructions. They may be removed if there is interference with stance, swing or line of play. Note: Remove the yardage marker, not the ball. Ref. Rule 24-1a. 43

TEMPORARY If trucks, tractors or other equipment temporarily parked on the course interfere with player s stance, swing, or line of play, the player may drop at the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole. If your ball lay under or through a fence and not OB, you may bring the ball back to the fairway side of the fence, no nearer hole, swing and stance relief with no penalty. SPRINKLER HEAD RELIEF AROUND GREENS - If a sprinkler head interferes with the players line of play, but only if the sprinkler head is within two club-lengths from the green and the player s ball is within two club-lengths from the sprinkler head, the player may lift, clean and drop his ball, at the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole, without penalty. TREE WELLS - Balls coming to rest within a tree well are specifically NOT entitled to relief. Bark chips and other materials within these areas may be treated as LOOSE IMPEDIMENTS. YARDAGE BUSHES - Yardage bushes (located 125 and 75 yards from greens) are NOT considered to be obstructions (Ref. Definitions and Rule 24-2) and the player is NOT entitled to relief. EMBEDDED BALL - Anywhere through the green (not in a hazard or on a putting green), a ball that is embedded in its own pitch mark in the ground may be lifted, cleaned and dropped at the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole, without penalty. EDGING GROOVES - If a player s ball comes to rest on the grooving edge of the green, the ball may be lifted and placed at the nearest point of relief, no nearer the hole. 44

DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICES - A player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only (USGA Decision 14-3/0.5). AERATION OF COURSE - Through the green, a ball that comes to rest in or on an aeration hole may be lifted, without penalty, cleaned and dropped, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green. On the putting green, a ball that comes to rest in or on an aeration hole may be placed at the nearest spot not nearer the hole that avoids the situation. PREFERRED LIES - Through the green Only on holes where carts are restricted to the cart paths due to wet and muddy conditions, a ball may be lifted, cleaned and placed within one club length of the original lie, not nearer the hole. THROUGH THE GREEN - "Through the green" is the whole area of the course except: The teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played; and all hazards on the course. USGA RULE 24-2 b (i) - The player shall lift the ball and drop it within one club-length of and not nearer the hole than the nearest point of relief on a part of the course that avoids interference (as defined) by the immovable obstruction and is not in a hazard or on a putting green.
