A challenging day of golf is capped off with a cocktail reception, awards dinner and one of the finest live and silent auctions in the Chicago area. The Chicago Select Golf Invitational is one of the largest and most profitable golf events for the American Cancer Society in the nation. Our History and Mission In 1913, a group of 15 prominent physicians and business leaders founded an organization to combat a disease regarded with such great fear and denial that it was rarely mentioned in public. Nearly a century later, the American Cancer Society is the largest community-based voluntary health organization in the United States. With an estimated 3 million volunteers worldwide, the Society fights for every birthday threatened by every form of cancer in every community. Our success is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, who are the backbone of our organization. In Illinois, we currently fund more than $24 million in active research grants. In a time when federal research funding has slowed dramatically, these grants keep the search for new cures moving forward. In just six years we have created a statewide support network serving an estimated 30,000 cancer patients and families yearly. Thanks to the vision and generosity of our donors, all services are free. The 4 th annual American Cancer Society Discovery Ball raised more than $2 million to advance our lifesaving programs and services. How We Fuel the Search for Cures We are the largest private funder of cancer research in the United States, with more than $3.4 billion invested in the search for new cures. Research funded by the Society has laid the groundwork for virtually every major breakthrough in cancer prevention, detection and treatment seen in the last six decades. When we began, only a quarter of all cancer patients achieved 5-year survival. Today, more than 2 in 3 will reach this milestone. The Illinois Division funds young cancer investigators focusing on bold new ideas. Three out of 4 of our grant recipients go on to receive national funding for their work a testament to our success in identifying the strongest researchers pursuing the most promising concepts. Through the years, 44 scientists funded by the Society have earned the Nobel Prize for their findings.

How We Help People Stay Well We reach out to millions in Illinois with the good news that most cancers can be prevented by making healthy choices every day. We partner with cities, towns, community groups, schools, faith organizations and others to bring practical, cancer-fighting information to people statewide. We work closely with our corporate partners to bring prevention and wellness programs into Illinois workplaces. How We Help Patients Get Well Through our statewide patient services network, we work to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families by helping them find solutions for a host of medical, financial and practical challenges. Every day, more than 100 Illinois residents reach out for help by calling our 24/7 cancer support line. Nationwide, we answer 1.1 million calls each year. An estimated 30,000 patients and caregivers will receive free support in Illinois this year, representing nearly half of all newly diagnosed patients in our state. Our patient resource centers are located in communities where more than 70 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients live. Our network now includes more than 70 centers based in hospitals, clinics and professional offices across Illinois. How We Empower Everyone to Fight Back Through our partnership with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), we promote effective, life saving cancer policies and legislation at the federal, state and local levels. ACS CAN s broad network of grassroots volunteers work to assure that the voices of cancer patients are heard by lawmakers in Springfield and Washington, D.C. Most recently, we led the charge to protect Illinois workers and patrons from the deadly effects of secondhand smoke, resulting in the passage of Smoke-Free Illinois, one of the nation s most comprehensive indoor smoking bans. Our current priorities call for greater government funding of cancer research, accelerated efforts to fight cancer by reducing tobacco-related illness, and the elimination of deadly cancer disparities among racial and ethnic minority groups and the medically underserved.
