1 Shoretalk: Friday 13th April 2018 Members Corner: Hole-in-One: We re delighted to announce that one of our very promising Juniors, David Chung, had a Hole-in-One whilst competing in the Barfoot and Thompson Akarana Open on Sunday. Congratulations David. The first of many, we re sure. Sunday 22 nd April Sunderland Pennants Rd 8 at NSGC: We are now hosting Rd 8 of Sunderland Pennants on Sunday 22 nd Monday 30 th April 2018 Member s Shotgun at 8.00am: There will be a member s Shotgun start at 8.00am on Monday 30 th April Please book online in the usual way. From the Management: Management development: I have spent the majority of this week attending a General Manager s Association (GMANZ) training course at Remuera. This course was designed to help Golf Club managers hone their skills, learn new ones and also to network with other Club Managers to both share knowledge and build relationships. The week included presentations from the CEO of Congressional Golf Club (USA), NZPGA, NZ Turf Institute, Puddicombe Golf Design Ltd, Royal Auckland GM, Remuera Course Superintendent, Royal Wellington GM and a guided tour of Royal Auckland course development site with their Course Superintendent and the Nicklaus Design representative. During the week we discussed turf types, course designs, bunker renovations, business diversification, retail integration, PGA Pro utilization, member service initiatives and a host of other subjects all designed to help manager s to improve the service they can provide to their membership. I have learnt a lot this week and will be carefully considering ways in which we can implement some of these key learnings as we continue to look to improve your golfing experience here at North Shore Golf Club. Note: I now know what it s like to travel into the city during the morning and evening rush-hour traffic and for all those who do so on a daily basis, you have my deepest sympathies From the Course: Weather The weather this week has been challenging for our projects. The continuation of work on the Red course fairways has slowed by at least 3 days but Greg (our contractor) feels he will be able to start to catch up heading into the weekend.

2 We had a few trees come down around the course on Tuesday night/wednesday morning, but only a couple that would directly impact golf on the open 18. I d like to congratulate the staff in getting the course cleaned up on Wednesday, as debris and large branches were strewn across many holes and access points. Paul Newman (a member of the club) volunteered to give us a hand and he went about clearing the main entrance to the clubhouse, as well as the carpark. A huge job on his own and much appreciated by the staff, his help gave the staff the chance to focus on the course. The clean up will go on for a few more days yet on the Red course, once we have everything up to scratch on the open 18. Bunkers were brought back into play today, as they were all GUR on Thursday. They were full of water and debris and took a big effort from the team to clean them up this morning for play for the weekend. Debris littered the 11 th, 12 th and 10 th fairways Massive root ball from a fallen tree near the 24 th green A large Casuarina between the 1 st and 2 nd holes has split and will be cleaned up soon We didn t receive a lot of rain through this period, so it is not all that wet on the course. The winds on Tuesday night were recorded in the high 120 km per hour bracket across Auckland and judging by feedback from colleagues around Auckland, we seemed to have gotten off quite lightly. A few other clubs have huge clean ups to do, with Remuera faring the worst with over 30 trees down and the course not opening until Monday. They were also coring greens this week! Temperatures dropped significantly with the southerly blowing through, but not dramatic enough to affect seed germination. We still have a very large window to work with before any concerns are raised.

3 CART PATHS On Monday, the installation of the cart paths began, starting on the 5 th hole. The weather initially slowed the contractors progress, as they were not given access to the course for two days. Progress is now being made, with good weather for excavating. Tony Jonas Course Superintendent Forthcoming Golf Events: Men: Wednesday 4BBB Cup Qualifying: This event has been postponed until Wednesday 18 th April 2018, after the course was closed because of the storm this week. Subsequent matchplay rounds have been moved back a week in the programme to accommodate this change. Mixed: Mixed Open Canadian Foursomes 1 st Rd: Sunday 13 th May 2018: This round has been cancelled and the event has been made into a three round competition, with the first round being on Sunday 9 th September Further information will be made available nearer the time. Please make a note of the round changes in your diaries. Pennants: Men: Nobilo: An excellent battle against Muriwai at Wainui saw us narrowly defeated 5 to 3, with a very good and notable win for Jason Gulasekharam against Mark Hutson. We re currently in 3 rd place and virtually guaranteed a playoff position. This could be a great season for our very young Nobilo team. Rangitoto A carbon copy of Nobilo with the Rangitoto team losing 5.5 to 3.5 against Muriwai. Again sitting in 3 rd place, but with so many new players getting ready to join our Nobilo and Rangitoto ranks, I think the days of Muriwai dominance will soon be a thing of the past. Sunderland: Sadly lost their first Pennant match in almost 2yrs as they were beaten by Redwood Park at Warkworth (just one of those days with both their 1 & 2 shooting level par for their rounds!!!!). With Muriwai beating Wainui 6.5 to 2.5 North Shore will need to beat them convincingly at Gulf Harbour on the 22 nd April. Kaipara: A fantastic 7.5 to 1.5 win for the Kaipara team against Redwood Park GC at Gulf Harbour. This now puts NSGC top of the table with a 0.5 point lead over Wainui whom they play this Sunday. We wish them well for their Final.

4 Healthaire and North GC Men s 54-Hole Open Championship: Saturday 19 th and Sunday 20 th May 2018: Entries are now open and available in the Men s Locker Room or from Golf Operations, for this superb annual event. Join other top players from the Harbour/Auckland and Bay of Plenty regions in this 54-hole celebration of golf. Places are limited (by handicap), so please get those entry forms and internet payments in as soon as possible.

5 Women: Midweek 18-Hole (Section 1): Team 1. Another great win for Team 1 63/45 against Huapai at Muriwai and an equally convincing 59.5/48.5 win for Team 2 against Pupuke at the same venue. Midweek 18-Hole (Section 2): A huge 76/32 win for our team against Helensville at Waitemata. Here are the girls posing for their winners photograph! 9-Hole: The season goes from strength to strength for our 9-Hole Ladies, with a superb 28.5/25.5 win over Wainui at Pupuke GC. Juniors: Pinehurst school students (four of whom are members of North Shore GC - Sung Jin Yeo, Jaewoo Son, Eujin Kang and Yeonsoo Son) recently played Macleans College in the final of the 9- hole Premier golf tournament. It was an extremely tight match coming down to the last hole, but we re delighted to announce that Pinehurst wo, to become Auckland Champions! This is the first time the local school has ever won the competition, so it s a huge achievement for the players. Below is a picture of the team: Sung Jin Yeo, Mr Stephen Geach, Jaewoo Son, Eujin Kang, Yeonsoo Son and Subin Wui. Yeonsoo Son has also recently played at the Barfoot and Thompson Akarana Open (a Charles Tour event) and was the youngest competitor (12) to make the cut. 6 From the Pro Shop Hi Everybody, We ve arranged for North Shore members to have an advance sneak preview of the new ranges of Cross and Footjoy clothing that we ll soon be stocking in the North Shore Pro Shop. Representatives from the two companies will be at the club in the upstairs lounge after the completion of Women s Open Pairs Charity Day on Tuesday 17 th April. So why not take the opportunity to look over the latest styles which will be hitting the shops soon. Pre-orders on the day will welcomed and accepted. A Committee member advised her to proceed and report to the Committee at the completion of the round before returning her card. What is the ruling? a) There is no penalty and the score with the wrong ball counts b) There is a two stroke penalty added to the score made with the wrong ball c) Erica should be disqualified Answer: (b). Explanation: Decision 33-7/5 and Rule 15-3b.
