1 Newsletter Thursday 2 nd August 2018 Golf Competitions The competition for Men this Saturday/Sunday is a Stroke match and round 1 of 2 for the War Memorial Trophy. It is also round 1 of 2 qualifying rounds for the Borthwick Vase. The Women s competition is a continuation of the monthly LGU and a qualifying round for both the Van Asch and Silver Year 2000 Rose Bowls. On Sunday the Mens interclub season continues with all 3 teams in action. The Woodward Cup side play Templeton at Templeton, the Blank Cup team play Coringa at Clearwater and the Simon Cup team play McLeans Island at Harewood. Upcoming Matches The Ralph Beadel Trophy has reached the Divisional final stage with Tony Park & Peter Davey playing Gerald Cummins and Stuart Johnson in one match and Murray Smith & Lindsay North playing Dermot Martin & Tracy Tatom in the other. Tony is also in the final of the Godby Trophy where he will play David Barley. In Womens matches, the final of the Wilkin Cup will be played between June Edwards and Debbie Barley. Lorraine Woodfield and Sue Cowles will contest the Dorothy Anderson Cup final and Janet Christie Anderson will meet Sue Cowles in the final of the Vernon Salver.

3 Interclub Results Woodward Cup. We won 4.5/3.5 over Harewood with wins to Richard Reed, Jason Sincock, Nick Franzmann, Tom Turner with the half from JJ Love. Blank Cup. We won a tight match with Pegasus 5/3 with wins to James Simpson, Michael Anderson, Mark Lawson, Dean Tucker and Tony Park. Simon Cup. A loss to Harewood 6.5/1.5 with wins to Ian MacDonald and a half to Murray Turnbull. Pollock Cup. A 3.5/2.5 loss to Pegasus. The early morning benign conditions were fairly swiftly replaced by squally showers and a strong Southerly at Waimari Beach. Both Kate Shier and Maria Sung Lee had good wins, Margaret Coughlan was not so lucky, putting up a good fight against an inform Jessica Crosbie. All three other matches went to the eighteenth, sadly both June Edwards and Melissa Newburn lost their games, and Catherine came away with a well-deserved half. Many thanks to our caddies, and those brave souls who came out to support the team. New Blinds in the Sprig Bar The Mid-week Masters (Tuesday and Thursday Mens Group) very kindly organised two raffles to fund the purchase of blinds for the western end of the sprig bar, to relieve the sunstrike problem in the late afternoon. I am very pleased to advise that they raised $1,225 and the blinds have been installed. I would like to thank the following generous members: Guy Hargreaves for donating the printing of the raffle tickets, Rodney Trowsdale for donating raffle prize #1; six bottles of wine in a handmade carry-case and Grahame Buist for donating prize #2; the framed autographed 2017 Crusaders Super- 18 champions jersey. Thank-you also to the organisers, led by Peter Sturge and all those who purchased tickets. The wine was won by Corey Barron, a visitor from Hamilton and the jersey was won by Richard Pearse, pictured below. He is gifting it to his grandson.

4 Trial of a new Club logo We have been developing a clothing logo that is distinctive but with an affordable embroidery in comparison to the crest which is close to $20 per piece. The proposed logo is being trialled on the polo shirts and caps worn by the Pro Shop staff. Both the shirt and cap will be displayed on a mannequin outside the Pro-shop this weekend. An alternative shirt is being created that displays Christchurch Golf Club on the sleeve rather than with the CGC logo. When approved, we propose to develop an extensive and affordable range of clothing and caps in a variety of colours that can be sold to both members and guests. We are seeking and welcome feedback from the members to the Proshop of Office staff or to Board and Committee members, before making the final decision to proceed. We will also issue a survey via Survey Monkey in a couple of weeks. Communications Following the feedback from the member survey, we have been reviewing our communication strategy and will soon start implementing some changes that I would like to summarise: Newsletter. We are moving to a new template with a smarter look and is more flexible and easier for us to create a punchier and shorter newsletter. The new format will include links to additional detail, including the weekly results. In the coming months we will also trial a fortnightly edition. Finally, hard copies will be placed in the Clubhouse and newsletter highlights will be displayed on the TV s. Website. As stated above, we are updating the website to make results easier to link to from the newsletter or to find directly. Videos. You have seen the first 3 of these popular features recorded by Bryan. We will create more of these on different topics from the relevant staff or officers. 5 Course #1 Drain. This past week has seen a ramping up of activity again, following E-Can sign0ff on environmental matters. The south basin of the pond is almost complete. I encourage you all to look at it next time you play. The permanent water level will be at the top of the shingle. The contractor has moved their containers to Horseshoe Lake Rd boundary in advance of removing the haul road to the pond. Bulk excavation has started again and the mound between 5&6 has been started. The shaping of the mounds and the pond banks continues and once again I am sure you will agree that it looks great. Richard will again be working through the weekend so please be careful around his work area. Marks team remains on target with the irrigation upgrade. He will be focused on #10 next week. We will determine the disruption next Monday, meaning whether the hole will need to be closed or if we can play it as a Par 3. Range finders I have been asked by several members about recent upgrades manufacturers are adding to their devices, commonly known as slope, which can measure the difference in elevation of any shot, uphill or downhill. Bushnell was the first to do this for golf, where it had 2 different faces on its version, one with slope and the other without, so it was easy for anyone to identify. Now, their latest version, (which other manufacturers are also doing) has a simple switch, for on and off. Currently, Rule 14-3 does not permit the use of any artificial device or unusual equipment for the purpose of gauging or measuring distance. However, a Local Rule may allow the use of a distancemeasuring device during a round of golf, to measure distance and distance alone. Most clubs adopt this local rule for distance measuring but NOT slope. My understanding is that the upcoming, 1 January 2019 rule amendments, will reverse this rule. I e distance (only) measuring devices will be allowed, but a local rule can be adopted to prohibit them. There is nothing to prevent anyone using the slope option during a social round, but in any competition round, it must be turned off. 6 Mid-Winter Feast A huge Thank you to all who supported and attended our Mid-Winter Feast last Friday. It was a fun night with over 70 attendees, made up with a mix of Golf Club Members and their guests. Food was abundant, and wine and beer flowed to the tables; A merry mid-winter feast was had by all.
