1 Newsletter Thursday 8 th June 2017 Golf Competitions This week Saturday s competition for Men is a Bamboozle Stableford: Best 3 out of 4 scores count. It is also round 5 of the Shirley Links Shootout. The Womens competition is a continuation of this week s World Travellers Stableford competition. It is also round 6 of the Women s Shootout. Next Tuesday/Wednesday and Saturday the Women s competition is an LGU round and an 18-hole stroke event for the Margaret Burt Salver to be played from the White Tees. The Mens competition next Saturday is a Foursomes match for the Otago Salver and the Old Friends Trophy to be played in groups of six. Last Weeks Results The winner of the Women s weekly Stableford competition was Sue Brown with 40 points followed by Helen Lim on 38 and Stephanie Beth and Ina Lee Hall both with 37 points. The winners of the Wednesday Mens stableford was Neil Bradley with a very impressive 48 points. 2nd was John MacVicar with 46 and 3rd was John Sinclair with 42. The 9-hole group winner was Rod Bourke-Shaw with 24 points followed by Lyndsey Sturge on 17 and Pam Bourke-Shaw, Margot Christie and Josie Yeates all with 16 points. Saturday s Men s competition was a Fourball Best Ball match for the Dominion Cup. The Winners were John Pope and Ben Dyer on a countback from James Simpson and Phil Loughnan, Shane Harold and Yoshiyuki, and Andre Kotzikas and Brett Noonan all with a score of plus 9. Midweek Masters. The Tuesday winner was a tie between Mark Rountree and Brian Cleland on 37 points. The Thursday winner was Andy Shand with 42 points. The Queen s Birthday mixed event, although played in adverse conditions, was very well supported. The winning team were Lillian, Mika, Ian and Laura MacDonald with a nett score of 62. The team consisting of Phil Lever, Monica Timu, Valerie Hobbs and Tony Park were 2nd with a nett score of The best gross score for the day was 70 by the team of Glynn Kininmonth, Peter Kininmonth, Jennifer Cho and Charles Whitwham. International Teams Event Saturday 25 th June This always popular event is almost here so get your teams together. For those players or teams wishing to play as an international team please contact David Robinson and for the New Zealand teams contact either Bryan Graham or Paul Needs. This will be multiple tee start at 11.00am and the cost is $25.00 which includes your meal. For new members, this is a great event to get involved in and meet other members so talk to David, Bryan or Paul. Queen s Birthday Honours Two members were honoured this week as Members of the New Zealand Order or Merit. (MNZM). Cran Bull for services to cricket Lee Robinson for services to community and sport. Congratulations to you both. Course At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I must comment again about the lack of care in repairing divots and pitch marks. Many that I saw when I played yesterday were very fresh, in my mind made by players that day. We have just had an extremely wet few days, with the course being very soft overall, meaning the greens staff have extra duties to make the course playable for us. They cannot also be expected to fix the damage we do, so we must all do better and take even more care when it is so wet. It is a lot easier to repair both divots and pitch marks when the ground is so soft, so please help us keep the course up to the overall condition that we can all be proud of. Due to the wet conditions, the use of electric carts has been limited at times. This is obviously to avoid too much damage to areas that are prone to damage, i.e. where most players would normally walk or drive through. At times like this, please avoid walking through areas that are clearly muddy and help us spread the load to a wider area. Greens staff will move ropes to help with this, but we can help them by being careful to avoid those wet and soggy areas.

3 Ironically, despite the wet weather, the greens have continued to get better and smoother. Mark is hoping this improvement will continue right through winter. Members may have noticed that as the season moves further towards mid-winter that the length of the rough may have become a bit of a nuisance. Mark will endeavour to have the rough cut as regularly as is possible but has been delayed by the recent rain. The rule surrounding an embedded ball has been raised. Our local Club rule allows for a free drop from an embedded ball anywhere on the course other than on a green or in a hazard. Slow play is still a big bugbear for a lot of our members. Players need to be ready to play at their allotted starting times and make sure that they keep up with the group in front of them. If groups fall behind they need to either make the effort to catch up or call the group up behind them. Good golfing this weekend Clubhouse News Lions Crusaders Match - Saturday 10th June, 6pm We will be open late on Saturday 10th June for a fantastic night of Rugby. Join us for a delicious Bistro style buffet dinner followed by the live screening of the British & Irish Lions v Crusader on the big Screen.
