Make sure to make your reservations for you and your family with us this year. We provide a wonderful alternative to dining at home. We do the cooking, cleaning and serving. All that's left is the eating and football! Reservation times are available from 10:30 to 2:00. If you are traveling or going pot luck for Thanksgiving, we can help you with that as well. We can provide carved turkey, ham, pies and side dishes for you to take to your family's celebration (Call Corey O'Brien to make those arrangements ). Don't forget, the Christmas Ball is coming up and tables are filling up fast. As this is always a popular event, make your reservations early by calling Deonna on our reservation line at Lastly, keep an eye out for new events rolling through this winter as we work to make our clubhouse a winter getaway for families and couples as well. We look forward to seeing all of you this month. Sean Barker Are you planning a special dinner for your family; maybe an anniversary dinner with your spouse? Or perhaps you re hosting a business group with out of town guests. Prairie Dunes can offer private dining with custom menus for your small group. Add a touch of class by customizing a menu to suit your tastes and impress your guests with a special dinner not normally available in the club. Contact Corey O Brien if you are interested in setting up a custom menu for your group CoreyO@PrairieDunes.com.
5 General Manager Scott Nelson Be sure to make your reservations for the annual Member s Christmas Ball, scheduled for Friday, December 1st. Food, friends, and fun (and probably a few drinks) will be the order of the evening as Chef Rick Carr and his staff will prepare a four-course meal served by Food and Beverage Director, Sean Barker s front of house staff. The popular Wichita band, The Source, will entertain with their large catalog of danceable tunes to ensure you re on your feet and ringing in the holiday season. Seating is limited so be sure to contact Dining Room Manager, Deonna Gamble, at to reserve your table. Based on availability, Prairie Dunes members may host non-member guests beginning November 7th. The Jupiter Hills real estate sale will go public for lots 1-3 as the time has now passed for members-only pre-sale. The remaining lots are +/- one acre and have city water and sewer connectivity. If you are interested please contact me at the club The new Craig and Wilson lodge have been a huge hit with members and guests as everyone comments how roomy and well appointed the bedrooms and commons areas are. The new lodge is an eight bedroom duplex that has 16 queen beds and two large commons areas that provide guests with plenty of rooms to stretch out and relax after a fun day on the golf course. Outdoor patios, a fire pit, a great view of the golf course, and a beautiful Kansas sunset and provide a perfect setting for a glass of wine and a cigar with friends after a fun day on the golf course. Speaking of the lodges, come see what we re all excited about as we ll be hosting a lodge open house on Wednesday, November 8th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Hosted beer, wine, and light hors d oeuvres will be served. See you at the club, Scott Nelson, GM At Your Service... Justin Raigoza I have been an employee of Prairie Dunes on and off since my high school days. I started out as a turf team member where I spent four season walk mowing greens and had the pleasure of working the US Senior Open. My second stent at the Dunes started under the superior management of Dan The Man Kluba! I spent three seasons with Dan from 2013 to 2015 where I also had the pleasure of working the NCAA D1 National Championship. My third stent just recently started this fall 2017 and I am thrilled to be back with my idol Dan Kluba. Working at Prairie Dunes has afforded me some great opportunities such as being able to work alongside Notah Begay for the golf channel while he did his on course announcements during the NCAA tournament as well as being able to meet one of the greats in Tom Watson during the final ceremony of the Senior US Open. Having Prairie Dunes on my resume has and will continue to be great for my career, but it s the people that I work with that have given me the most joy. I am looking forward to what next spring has to offer!
6 Superintendent Jim Campbell With the end of the growing season fast approaching I thought that I would give you an update on how we have spent your money that was allocated for improving the drainage system at Prairie Dunes. As I explained to you last spring we started by addressing the aged out pumps that have been in place for over twenty five years. We could not get parts for some of these pumps and we felt that some were under sized for the expectations of the course. We started by upgrading the trash pump that is to the right of number two fairway. This pump removes the major amount of water from the course and is also the area the closes the course when we receive large amounts of rain. This water is pumped to the pond behind the Lodges and the pipe size is too small to carry the amount of water we felt was required to accomplish our goals; we sized the new pump to not only move more water, but also fight the head pressure that the smaller pipe size creates. We also installed a pump in Queens s pond so that we can keep Queen s pond low enough to hold most of the rain water from number six fairway. This allows the water to be removed from number one fairway first. We have also plumbed the sump in Queen s pond to allow us to pump water from the course with this pump if the main pump goes down. We have also purchased a larger gas powered pump as backup when one of these pumps are not working because of things like lightning. The other area that slows play from getting on the course is a sump pump located between eight and nine fairways. This pump removes rain water from seven green, lower putting green area, club house runoff, eight fairway, and nine fairway. When overwhelmed the water pools in from of number eight tee and stops play. It was necessary for us to take new electric lines from the driving range building to the pump site and a new pump was installed. The old pump was a 3 hp. pump which moved about 150 gal./min. and we replaced it with a 10 hp. that will move about four times that amount. The 3 hp. pump will be placed into number fourteen fairway when time and money become available. Now that we could get the additional water removed from the course we worked on getting the water to the pumps in a timely manner. Bigger pipe was installed down about 200 yards of number one fairway. We also installed a large interceptor drain on the left side of number one fairway to catch the water that comes onto the course from the driving range. It now flows into a pipe and moves to the pumps without allowing it to add additional water to number one fairway. We also are trying sand slit drainage to not only move additional water from the fairways, but also firm up the playing surface quicker. This is still a trial project and we will be finishing that part of number one drainage by installing French drains to remove the water those slits carry to the front of number one green, but cannot get the water into the ditch. These sand slits have also been tried in three, six, and eleven fairways. Additional drainage was added to number three, six, eleven, and thirteen fairways. This fall we will be working on additional drainage in eight and eleven fairways and that will exhaust the money that was voted in last spring. Unfortunately, drainage projects are an ongoing thing at a golf course. Surface drains need to be leveled and moved, because when we squeegee water to drain boxes, soil and a grass clippings that we move makes the low areas where the boxes were in place now the high areas. Additional surface drains, French drains and XGD will help us get water removed from the course faster and allow play back on the course quicker. This is one of our goals as well as healthier turf to make playing golf at Prairie Dunes more enjoyable. See you on the course. Jim Campbell November 2017
7 Tip of the Month Tennis Safety in our Doubles Play! When playing doubles we often find ourselves in tough situations. Recognizing these situations in the heat of the battle can be very difficult and at times very frustrating. We have a few shots and tools that can help us out of these tough situations. When in doubt always hit to the person at the baseline! This does two things: it allows us to play a more conservative shot and not have to worry about the net player hurting us with a strong volley and it also gives us more time to get into position since the ball will take longer to get to the player at the baseline versus the player at the net. Return of serve goes crosscourt! Many times a return of serve that goes down the line can put our partner on an island and leave them vulnerable to a strong volley. Playing the return crosscourt does the opposite it allows your partner to become a force at the net and look to pick off balls from your opponent. The lob is our friend! The lob in doubles is a game changer. It can allow a team to go from defense to offense in one shot. The lob can force your opponents to switch positions which can put you in control of the point. The lob also is a great way to give your team time to get back into position when you feel like you and your partner are getting behind in the point. Using these three strategies can help us find our way out of trouble! Prairie Dunes Junior Compete in State Tennis Tournaments We would like to congratulate Michaela Esau for placing 10th in the 4A Kansas State Doubles Championship for Buhler High School. We would also like to recognize all the Kansas State tournament qualifiers: Lucy Mann for Buhler High School, Sydnee Foster and Lauren Ollenburger for Hutchinson High School. Congratulations girls on your outstanding tennis season!
