Golf: Steve Swift Bridge: Phyllis Budde Wilma McCormack Tennis: Gary Stewart PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Don Lynam As we approach Independence Day, may we all take time to reflect on the wonderful country in which we live and give thanks for the wisdom of our Founding Fathers. Please enjoy the day with your family, friends, and fellow residents. Fireworks are now legal in our area and we will likely have a lot more noise than normal. Please remember to be considerate of your neighbors and to discontinue fireworks after 10:00 p.m. Summertime is the perfect time to grill foods, but grills can pose fire hazards. The Lexington Fire Prevention Bureau recommends the use of electric grills as a first choice. Second choice is propane grills, as long as the grill s propane tank can be affixed to the grill without having to be brought through the living space. Charcoal grills are not recommended because their embers can flare. If a charcoal grill is used, it is important to ensure that the coals are completely out and disposed of properly, not in Herbies or boxes. The Fire Prevention Bureau recommends a fire retardant mat be placed under any grill on a wooden deck to prevent an ember catching the deck on fire. Use of fire extinguishers and garden hoses are also recommended to ensure that if a fire starts, it can be quickly extinguished. Keep any type of grill away from the house as the heat can damage siding. Only multi-family units are subject to an ordinance that requires 10 feet of clearance around grills but, the more clearance the grill has, the less likely damage to the residence or landscaping will occur. As a reminder, both pools are open. The pool hours are from 7:00 am - 10:00 pm daily. Regarding fireworks, residents have raised concerns about the fireworks tent in our front gate. I received the note below from a resident, which reflects the views and concerns expressed to me by many residents: One of the pleasures of living in Griffin Gate is the peaceful feeling you gain when you turn down to our beautiful sanctuary. The unforeseen, unfortunate and sudden emergence of a large tent hawking fireworks tarnishes the otherwise beautiful entrance to Griffin Gate. The ammunition filled tent is the latest incident, but many in our community have witnessed the unsightly decline in the uncared for property of Griffin Gate Plaza. Thoughts and suggestions concerning the status of Griffin Gate Plaza and how the community can facilitate a change for the better are welcome. Fortunately the fireworks tent should be gone within a few days and I am hopeful we will see improvements in Griffin Gate Plaza. Have a wonderful 4th of July celebration. The Griffin Gate Office will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th for Independence Day.

5 GOLF By Steve Swift Hot scores predicted for GG holiday outing Back in those idyllic yesteryears, when this hacker yearned for a handicap index in the low to mid teens, breaking 90 referred to the score one hoped to post after 18 holes. These days, pass the water bottle, please, any dreams of breaking 90 refer only to less of an afternoon temperature. My, my, it s been a tad warm, eh? Snap, crackle, pop oh, that s just the sound of the rough grass breaking under one s feet. Well, then again, from a glass-half-full perspective, in the dry heat of late June the ball was rolling farther along the rock-hard fairways after my hosel shots. And, really, what s more beautiful than a wounded shot off No. 10 tee diving toward the lake, then bouncing, skipping, scuttling across the dry bed, ricocheting high into the air off the riparian rocks and rolling to a stop next to the 150-yard marker? Mother Nature and her weather whims have seriously tested greens superintendent Scott Bender and crew early this summer. We tip our hats to their efforts to keep the Griffin Gate course superbly playable. Did you happen to notice more of your neighbors on the links recently? The really serious players worked in extra sessions prepping for the July 4 Griffin Gate residents and guests holiday outing. Count me among them: I dropped extra balls at No. 14, my favorite hole here. From No. 14 tee box, I aim my drive at the fairway bunkers on the left, hoping for a slight fade into the short grass. For the second shot, I take aim with a high-lofted club, after visualizing my ball s flight over the tall walnut tree on the left side of the fairway. From that landing it s just a chip and a putt and I m off to No. 15 tee box. OK, OK, more likely chip, chip, putt, putt, putt, but you get my drift, right. I just love watching the ball arc over that walnut tree. (I d love to have my drive on No. 7 fly over the tall hackberry tree in the left fairway, but that s really an in-my-dreams kind of shot, especially since the aforementioned fade seems to prefer sending the ball into sand in the right side fairway bunker.) Other regular players at our course have optimal scoring opportunity in mind for liking specific holes. Ann Marie Panzica, for example, is confident of scoring low each time she tees it up at Nos. 13 and 17. In her pre-shot visualizations on those par 4 holes, well-struck drives can set up potentially makeable eagle pitches or 1-putt birdie opportunities. She happily takes par, too. Nos. 4, 6, 14 and 17, especially fit some players eyes because the first shots are from elevated tee boxes. The view from No. 17 tee, says Brenda Lampton, is tremendous. A downhill tee shot: aim it over the 150-yard marker horse head on the right. If you hit the ball properly it goes and goes. After paring No. 17 you are energized for a par on No. 18 and a strong finish keeps you coming back. Resident Bettie Lou Evans, former women s golf coach at the University of Kentucky, has fond memories at No. 5, the devilish, dogleg-left par 4 hole, where four large bunkers dominate the center and left-center fairway zones. No problem for Bettie Lou: she drove the green once in the senior tour s proam event held here regularly a few moons ago. She had some coaching help that day, she recalls, from pro Don January s caddy. Bettie Lou made a birdie. If your thing is capitalizing on optimal scoring opportunity, then you already know one hole here at Griffin Gate is more generous than all others: No. 4, the picturesque par 3. Marilyn Wunder scored a hole-in-one there on July 25, 1999, immediately making it her favorite local hole. There is an elevated tee box which is fun to play. And there is usually a family of Canada geese (nearby) guarding their young, and they let you know if you get too close, she says. Griffin Gate Centenarian Bill Santor has posted three 1 s on No. 4, with two of those coming in May Resident Ken Trivette joined the No. 4 ace honor roll on June 16. Playing from the blue tees, about 125 yards away, Ken lofted a pitching wedge shot into the air. Neal Smith, Tommy Hall, Chuck Damron and Ken watched the ball land, hop once, roll about 10 feet and drop into the hole. That was Ken s first hole-in-1, and the third this summer by a family member. His 10-year-old grandson and 40-something-year-old son-in-law, both of Bowling Green, scored their aces earlier. Keep this in mind if you re planning to join us for the July 4 Griffin Gate outing: No. 4, on average, yields nearly an ace a month. OK, here we go. Focus. Concentrate. Visualize your 1 at 4 on 4. There were 20 garden club members and guests in attendance, including Evelyn Dalby, Linda Evans, Dr. Robert French, Barb Jarecky, Alice Minter, Yukiko Nagata, Theresa Naude, Aidan Naude, Susan Plovnick, Lynn Prezby, John Shaw, Anne Stigers, Marilyn Wunder, and Board members Marianne Parenti, Jennifer Dandliker, Kay Mangum, Sarah Dawson, Virginia Dulworth, Karen Jones, and Brenda Lampton. After a light lunch of several delicious homemade salads and accompaniments, a brief meeting was convened and new officers for the year were installed. Thank you, Garden Club members, for your support, and we look forward to our next event! IT S A NEW GARDEN CLUB AND BOARD FOR Our community has become more and more mobile and the Garden Club is making some changes that we hope will result in a more relaxed and casual entity that will attract more members that are able to participate. To be able to meet Garden Club needs, the Board suggested, and members approved, consolidating officer positions and creating the Garden Club Coordinator role, the Secretary-Treasurer position, the Membership position and the Garden Committee Chairperson. The new officers are: Brenda Lampton, Garden Club Coordinator; Jennifer Dandliker, Secretary-Treasurer; Sarah Dawson, Publicity-Membership; and Theresa Naude, Garden Committee Chairperson. Programs and Social events will be committee-owned. A Program or Social event will be scheduled for the months of August, October, December, March, May, and June. We look forward to this year s Programs and Social events and welcome member ideas and suggestions. GAZEBO GARDEN REPORT The Gazebo committee met on Friday, June 15 to weed, prune, and mulch the Gazebo garden. Having fun were gardeners Karen Jones, Theresa Naude, Louise Okapal, Marianne Parenti, John Shaw, Marilyn Wunder, Brenda Lampton and Kay Mangum. Thank you, Louise, for the delicious refreshments, and thank you, Dr. French, for pruning the roses prior to our gardening session. New Garden Committee Chairperson Theresa Naude needs volunteers to help with the Gazebo garden watering schedule for the summer - give her a call for more details and to sign up. GARDENING TIPS FOR JULY Water newly planted trees and shrubs every week if we are receiving less than 1 of rain per week. Deadhead annuals to promote a new flush of bloom and keep plants tidy. Dig and divide iris clumps to keep them looking good. July is a great time to start biennials to be transplanted to the garden in the fall. After summer flowering bulbs such as lilies have finished blooming cut off the spent flower heads to prevent seed formation. Leave the leafy stems intact so that bulbs can recharge for next year. Now is the time to dig and divide day lilies if desired. AN INVITATION TO JOIN THE GARDEN CLUB Any and all Griffin Gate residents or former residents may become members of the Griffin Gate Garden Club. Dues are staying at the $40 rate (make your check payable to Griffin Gate Garden Club) and are now due in to Sarah Dawson. This year s dues form is attached to the version of this newsletter; you can also contact Sarah Dawson for a dues form and she will fill you in on the details. Very important for this year: all members should indicate their Garden Club Committee preference on the form. Thank you for supporting the Griffin Gate Garden Club! OTHER MEMBER NEWS The next Griffin Gate Garden Club Board Meeting will be held on Monday, August 13, at 10:00am in the Clubhouse Boardroom. Garden Club members are always welcome to attend.
