The purpose of this handbook is to explain our centre activities to new members and to outline various policies that affect participating athletes and their families. It should be read by all prospective families so that they may become familiar with important facts and details of the centre programming. Please look over the entire document and let us know of any questions you may have. The program outlined in this document is an attempt at synthesizing many layers of golf coaching into a comprehensive and holistic program for junior golfers. The programs offered entail considerable commitment on behalf of the families involved as well as the coaching staff, but we are confident that this centre provides programs which are among the very best in our country. The genesis of this program stemmed from our personal observation that traditional golf instruction does not produce the results we would have hoped. At the end of each season, the players who work individually through golf lessons were far less advanced than those that took part in our structured group programs. While individual coaching does succeed in developing skill, the reality is that players develop faster and more comprehensively when they are part of a structured group training environment. This program is a unique opportunity which is available to only a select group of athletes in Canada. Athletes can expect to receive the very best in coaching services, training opportunities, and peer support as they continue on their journey towards excellence in golf. This program places considerable emphasis on developing champion traits in all facets of life and particularly in those areas that most impact golf development. As such, athletes in the program will receive guidance on themes like time-management, strength and conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition, competitive planning, tactical strategies, and technical development. The goal of our program is: ato provide an exceptional golf training program for our athletes. ato prepare athletes for competition on a regional and provincial level. ato support athletes with leading-edge research and information. ato assist families with navigating the competitive golf landscape and preparing for college and beyond. 3
MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to create the opportunity for positive competitive golf experiences for young athletes. We strive to educate players on how to effectively train for lasting skill acquisition and proper development of physical, mental, and technical golf skills. We believe in creating a fun, athlete-centered learning environment with full coaching support for players at all stages of skill development. Values such as honor and respect for the game are instilled in our players, which ultimately leads them to develop a passion for the sport which can take them anywhere from the playground to the podium. COACHING STAFF Perhaps nothing has more influence on the quality of a child s development in sport than the excellence of the coaching they are surrounded with. The coaches in our program have exposure to some of the most comprehensive training and certification programs for golf in the world and specialize in junior golf development. We possess expert training and extensive experience in the tactical and technical components of competitive golf. Our staff is motivated by the mission to support and develop junior athletes with the finest information available in all relevant fields. JUNIOR GOLF TOURNAMENT Players are encouraged to play in at least one event on one of the local junior golf tours. The BAGS Junior Tour tournament schedule will be provided at the beginning of the season. Rainout Policy: All group and individual sessions will be held unless you are contacted by the head coach or assistant coach. Weather issues such as lightning, heavy rain or winds could often lead a session to be rescheduled. This policy is in place to ensure the safety of players and coaches. Players will be contacted a minimum of 60 minutes before a session if changes are made. 6
COMPETITIVE PATHWAY Competition is a major component of the Cardinal GDC player development model. Tournament scheduling will typically be done in early May with event recommendations based on the player s level of skill development. The head coach will work in conjunction with the athlete and parents to come up with the most appropriate competitive calendar. BP athletes are recommended to play in roughly 3 5 competitive events a season. A typical season would have athletes playing in 2 4 local and 2 3 regional / district events. For most BP athletes the CJGA Junior Linkster Tour, GAO Junior Tour, Bags Tour or Maple Leaf Junior Tour event will be their biggest and should be made their first priority. EQUIPMENT i. Equipment which must be brought to a coaching session It is the responsibility of the athlete to come prepared for all coaching sessions. Players should have the following items with them at a coaching session: a Golf bag with all golf clubs a Golf bag should include tees, golf balls, ball marker, divot repair tool a Hat, sunblock, umbrella & rain jacket a Proper golf attire this includes proper golf shoes a Bottle of water and snacks 7
EQUIPMENT CONT. ii. Importance of properly fitted golf clubs Properly fitted golf clubs is a very important variable for the success of a competitive junior golfer. Imagine how difficult running a marathon would be with an improper shoe size! We often see this example happen in golf when we decide to buy golf clubs off the rack. Throughout a junior golfer s physical development, they will often go through significant changes to their body type. Increases in height, weight, and muscle mass greatly alter the type of golf clubs which should be used. Therefore, we recommend that juniors have their equipment checked on a regular basis. More specifically, we often see putter length as one of the biggest issues which need to be addressed in junior golfers. Custom fitting variables which need to be monitored should include: - Lie angle - Shaft length, type (steel vs. graphite), and flex - Wedges groove depth - Grip size Parents must understand that equipment will likely be needed to be changed or altered on a frequent basis. Equipment changes will be most frequent between the ages of when a young athlete s growth rate is typically accelerated. During this time period, it is recommended that you find a custom clubmaker in your area to help you with this process. Most pro shops and retail golf stores do not carry an extensive enough inventory of club options for junior golfers. PARENTS SECTION Parents play an important role in the development of the junior golf athlete. To have a successful program there must be understanding and cooperation among parents, golfers, and coaches. The progress your youngster makes depends to a great extent on this triangular relationship. It is with this in mind that we ask you to consider this section as you join the Cardinal Golf Development Centre and reacquaint yourself with this section if you are a returning CGDC parent. You have done a great deal to raise your child. You create the environment in which they are growing up. Your child is a product of your values, the structure you have provided, and the model you have been. Human nature, however, is such that a parent loses some of his/her ability to remain detached and objective in matters concerning his/her children s athletics. The following guidelines will help you keep your child s development in the proper perspective and help your child reach his/her full potential as an athlete. 8
COACH, PARENT, PLAYER INTERACTION The Coach is THE COACH: We want your junior golfer to relate to his or her coach as soon as possible concerning golfing matters. This relationship between coach and golfer produces the best results. When parents interfere with opinions as to how the golfer should play or train, it causes considerable, and often times insurmountable, confusion as to whom the golfer should listen to. If you have a problem, concern, or complaint, please contact the coach. Best kind of parent: The coach s job is to motivate and constructively criticize the golfer s performance. It is the parent s job to supply the love, recognition, and encouragement necessary to make the child work harder in practice, which in turn gives him/her the confidence to perform well in competition. PARENTS RESPONSIBILITIES It is essential for the specific roles of the parent to be clearly defined in order for success. a Provide child with unconditional support regardless of their golf performance a Do not teach your child golf - allow the coaches to do their job a Listen and take advice from coaching staff a Communicate openly and honestly with coaching staff a Please make every effort to have your golfers to their coaching session on time. a Stay away from athletes and coaches during coaching sessions a Be sure that your own expectations are in line with your child s but understand the difference between you and them a Become educated about the game of golf - learn to appreciate the difficulty and the allure of the game a Understand how one progresses through the sport of golf skill acquisition is a long-term process, often with many bumps along the road a Compliment a young athlete s growth with basic understanding of nutrition and recovery and encourage good athletic behaviors (proper sleep, hydration, etc.) a Be a role model i.e. Active parents tend to produce active children the reverse is also true 9
THE TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR PARENTS OF ATHLETIC CHILDREN I - Make sure your child knows that - win or lose, scared or heroic you love him/her, appreciate their efforts and are not disappointed in them. This will allow them to do their best without a fear of failure. II - Try your best to be completely honest about your child s athletic ability, his/ her competitive attitude, their sportsmanship, and their actual skill level. III- Be helpful, but don t coach him/her on the way to the golf course or on the way back, or at breakfast, and so on. It s tough not to, but it s a lot tougher for the child to be inundated with advice, pep talks and often critical instruction. IV - Teach them to enjoy the thrill of competition, to be out there trying, to be working to improve his/her golf skills and attitudes. Help them to develop the feel for competing, trying hard, and having fun. V- Try not to re-live your athletic life through your child in a way that creates pressure; you lost as well as won. You were frightened, you backed off at times, you were not always heroic. VI - Don t compete with the coach. If the coach becomes an authority figure, it will run from enchantment to disenchantment, etc., with your athlete. VII - Don t compare the skill, courage, or attitudes of your child with other members of the program, at least within his/her hearing. VII - Get to know the coach so that you can be assured that his/her philosophy, attitudes, ethics, and knowledge are such that you are happy to have your child under his/her leadership. IX - Always remember that children tend to exaggerate, both when praised and when criticized. Temper your reaction and investigate before over-reacting. X - Make a point of understanding courage, and the fact that it is relative. Explain that courage is not the absence of fear, but a means of doing something in spite of fear of discomfort. 10

CODE OF CONDUCT CGDC The majority of the golfing experience happens on the golf course or practice facility, involving athletes and coaches. Because of this, we cannot ask parents to maintain a constant watch to ensure proper behavior from their children. As an organization with abiding responsibilities for the growth, development, safety and competitive success of dozens of young athletes, the Cardinal Golf Development Centre has created a Code of Conduct. Our Code of Conduct applies to everyone associated with the centre including golfers, coaches, parents, golf clubs, and volunteers. The Cardinal Golf Development Centre strives to ensure a safe environment for its members and endeavors to foster healthy relationships among its golfers. For these reasons, the centre has adopted a zero-tolerance policy. Expectations / Responsibilities of Athletes Respect the efforts of coaches, facility staff, other group members, and competitors Respect all public and private property, including practice facilities, clubhouse, and golf course Give 100% effort at all times throughout coaching sessions Be honest and upfront with all coaching staff Be a long-term learner through the discovery process Have fun and always keep an open mind Attend and be on time for all practices and competitions If asked, help set up or take down any training equipment (picking up golf balls etc.,) Unless otherwise specified, leave the golf course at the end of the coaching session Ensure that all CGDC communication is delivered to parents Prohibitions No use of alcoholic beverages No use of drugs other than those prescribed by your physician No use of smoking or chewing tobacco Disrespectful, indiscreet or destructive behavior will not be tolerated. It is the responsibility of each golfer to make every effort to avoid guilt by association with such activities at any time during the year. No bullying any team members or competitors Discipline While some behavior is much more unacceptable than others, any breach of a rule may result in some form of disciplinary action up to and including a temporary suspension from the course. Occasionally a coach must discipline an athlete. Depending on the nature of the problem, the coach may speak privately to the individual or to the parents. At the discretion of either coach any one or all of the following actions will be applied: 1. The golfer may be sent home immediately from a coaching session or tournament at his / her own expense and if there is extra expense it will be golfer s responsibility. 2. The golfer may be suspended from the team until the golfer and parents have had a conference with the Head Coach and appropriate disciplinary actions have been implemented. If an issue is not resolved by the coach to the satisfaction of all individuals involved, the issue may be referred to the next level of authority. 12
