Although the temperatures have not moderated off of the 90 degree mark, our daylight length is a sure sign of things to come. For everyone that persevered through the summer heat, hang in there; Fall is just around the corner. One of the benefits of the slightly slower pace around the club during the summer in addition to catching up on some maintenance items and spending time on planning, is the opportunity to play some golf ourselves! Although the goal was to prepare for a few golf tournaments I signed up for to earn my professional re-certification points, I have really enjoyed playing regularly with a group of ladies on Friday mornings over the last two months. In addition to finding my game again and getting to know my golf partners a little better; seeing the course as a player is always the very best view! There is a lot going on in September! Golf Leagues start their new season, Tim Rippey will be here to entertain us on Friday September 15th, tap into your inner Cajun spirit with a Low Country Boil on Saturday September 23rd, and our usual Birthday Bash and Turkey Buffet just to name a few. Be sure to check out the entire newsletter and our calendar for details. As we say goodbye to Chef JP, we are happy to welcome Chef Jason Stasa to the family. Please stop in and introduce yourselves and help Jason feel at home. Last month we saw some great golf played at the Solheim Cup matches with our American Team retaining the cup! This month, the men will be contesting The Presidents Cup at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey September 25th - October 1st. Be sure to tune in and help cheer our team on to another victory. Have guests visiting this month or maybe you met some new friends that golf? Come enjoy our Say Goodbye to Summer Monday Guest golf rate. Golf Members are encouraged to bring a non-member guest for a great rate of $35 plus tax on Monday Sept. 11th, 18th and 25th. This rate won t last so take advantage of it now. Who knows, maybe you will help the club gain a new member in the process! You don t have to be a golfer to love golf clothing! Check out the great fabrics, easy care and easy to wear options we carry in our golf shop. We will be running sales this month to make room for all the new fall fashions so stop in and check out the savings! Now get out and play! Handicap Committee 3

The Nineteenth Hole August was a dry month...until the 26th through the 28th. We received 9.7" of rainfall, 7" of that fell in those three days. The golf course actually had a few wet areas! Turf Talk By: TJ West, Superintendant August was a tough month for the Golf Course Maintenance team. On August 12th one of our long time team members, Desir Desinor, was tragically killed i n a n a u t o m o b i l e accident. Words cannot describe how I feel about Desir and he will be greatly missed! Thank you for all the support that you have given us and his family during this time! August was a dry month...until the 26th through the 28th. We received 9.7" of rainfall, 7" of that fell in those three days. The golf course actually had a few wet areas! However, there has yet to be a need for cart path only restrictions this summer. The bunkers took the biggest hit from the rain. They have washed multiple times, and many have remained noticeably wet. The bunkers at Grand Haven are always a work in progress and we will continue to work on them daily. We were scheduled to perform the last core greens aerification on August 13th and 14th. With the passing of Desir, the decision was made to cancel the process. With the overall health of the greens combined with the fact that two aerifications were performed prior...we will not reschedule. However, a small solid tine aerification will be performed towards the end of September. This process is not invasive and you may not notice when it is completed. I was fortunate to participate in the preparations for the Web.com Tour WinCo Foods Portland Open at Pumpkin Ridge. I left Florida on August 16th and returned on the 29th. My task both the week before and during tournament week was to roll greens. Rolling greens aids in smoothing the putting surface and 1/2-1 foot more ball speed can be achieved. The experience was phenomenal! Oregon is a beautiful place, however, I am happy to be home! I have attached pictures of the Witch Hollow Tournament Course at Pumpkin Ridge during the event. I can be reached for question or comment by twest@grandhavengc.com Witch Hollow Tournament Course at Pumpkin Ridge in Oregon. Page 2

Volume 4, Issue 9 Thank goodness the August dog days are behind us! If we can avoid another major hurricane the summer heat will soon be behind us and some of the best golfing weather is right around the corner. At Grand Haven we are very fortunate to enjoy the golf course Jack Nicklaus designed and comraderies you enjoy being with your friends. We play golf normally in 4 hours or less in normal times and very rarely Page 3 From the Golf Shop By: Billy VanArsdale go past that. I read a study the U.S.G.A. worked on for 3 months in Los Angeles at Rancho Park, a course that plays 100,00 rounds a year, a tremendous amount of golf! The study started with the first groups out normally playing in less than 4 hours. During the day though each group tended to lose 1 minute, only 1 minute per group but by the middle of the day those rounds moved to 5 hours plus as the day Great Shots & Great Rounds progressed because of 1 minute per group. So the moral of all this is to embrace your friends that you get to play with and enjoy this GREAT golf course you get to play! How fortunate we are to be able to go to the tee at 12:30, play golf in less than 4 hours and enjoy nature, the course, and your friends. How fortunate we really, really are! Art Canino scored a hole in one at the 103 yard par 3 eighth hole August 10 th. Art ace was witnessed by Jack McCarthy, John Shreve, and Rick Dolgin. Rick Morris scored a hole in one on the 120 yard par three 14 th hole yesterday August 17 th using a 7 iron. Rick s ace was witnessed by George Kazmerski and Steve Kohen. Dennis Emerick scored an Eagle 2 on the par four 6 th hole Sunday, August the 20 th using a seven iron. Dennis s deuce was witnessed by Dom Leveille, Bob Wolfe, and Lonnie Ritzer. Bob Greenhalgh Eagled the par five 11 th hole Saturday August 19 th after his 235 yard 3 wood second shot ended up less than 18 inches from the cup. His playing partners remain anonymous. Nick Finelli s Eagle on the par four 6 th hole August 23 rd helped him to record a 75 for the day. Nick used a sand wedge for his second shot. Bruce Smith and Bob Wolfe witnessed the Eagle. Pete Bianchi Eagled the par 4 6 th hole Saturday August 26 th. Mr. Bianchi s deuce was witnessed by B.G. Hollenbeck, Dom Leveille, and Bob Wolfe. Golf Shop Hours of Operation Monday ~ Sunday 7:00 am ~ 5:00 pm Tee Time reservations can be made by calling the Golf Shop 7 days a week. Score posting after Golf Shop hours can be done from home using My GAF Golf Life. Driving Range Hours of Operation Friday thru Wednesday Front of Range 7am to 6pm Back of Range 7am to 4pm Thursdays Front of Range 7am to 4pm Back of Range 7am to 3pm An early close is needed to accommodate a clean pick for mowing the following morning. Handicap Committee By: Roland Robichaud On occasion, especially during the hot summer months, golfer s will play a less taxing game whereby they can t post a score because of the game, i.e. playing a scramble. It would be helpful to the handicap auditors that someone in the group put in a scorecard indicating the game played and the players involved in the game. Not only does this speed up the audit, it also reduces the possibility of being assessed a penalty score.

Volume 4, Issue 9 The Hub of the Club By Sarah Wells This newsletter article is one that is very difficult for me to write and I want you to know I had to think long and hard about my decision. That being said I have accepted a position at another location in St. Augustine and I will be phasing out my time here at Grand Haven. As many of you know I am a single mother and I live in St. Augustine so financially I am responsible for a lot. This opportunity allows me to be closer to home with some great opportunities for me to use my Bachelor s Degree in Business. I will continue to work part time for Grand Haven doing all the things I normally would do such as billing, payroll, reservations, etc. I will continue to be accessible via swells@grandhavengc.com and cell phone just as I have been in the past when I worked remotely. I will do my very best to respond to any messages within 24 hours. I will be coming into the office on Saturdays and/or Sundays to do anything needed with Andrea and of course membership. My last day of my normal schedule will be September 8th. My part time employment will continue for as long as needed. When I arrived at Grand Haven I felt like a fish out of water as I had only been in the state of Florida for a few days before I started this job. I am so thankful for the membership embracing me and allowing me to become part of their family. It has been such a pleasure to serve you over the last 4 years and you will remain close to my heart as I begin this new journey. I have gotten to know so many of you and it truly is hard to say goodbye. Although I will miss seeing you on a daily basis I want you to know that all your accounts will continue to be handled with the utmost care. In Loving Memory of our Friend Desir Desinor 4/17/52-8/12/17 Our friend and fellow co-worker passed away on August 12, Desir was born on April 17, 1952 on the Caribbean Island of Haiti to Marie Phanie Exantus Desnior and Dieuferne Desinor. He was married to Bergette (Persume) Desinor whom he shared 33 years of his life. Prior to relocating to Palm Coast he lived in South Florida for 18 years by way of Belleglade, Florida. He was employed at Grand Haven Golf Club; he was a lover of the outdoors and nature which could asset to over 40 years of expertise in the landscaping and lawn care industry. Undoubtedly, he worked well with his hands however his beloved time was spent gardening with his wife in their backyard. His passion for History and Geography was incredible and naturally passed down to his children whom enjoyed his teaching about historical figures and important geographical landmarks; he was known as a walking GPS to his love ones. Desir was a systematic man and made it his goal and mission in life to teach his children the importance in structure, discipline and accountability. He was a man of few words however when he spoke it was profound. He was known to speak to his children in riddles and parables that he would explain to ensure understanding. He enjoyed the simplicities of life like watching basketball or Spanish novels and spending quality time story telling with his family and friends. He had a beautiful smile that would light up a room; it was so bright and white. Although he was small in stature his presence was as big as the ocean. He loved music; sang and whistled constantly repeating a melody in his heart. He will be greatly missed, but always in our hearts. Page 5

LEAGUE NEWS The Nineteenth Hole Grand Haven Men s Golf Association By: Mike Tebbano The MGA had a busy August holding the annual "Boys of Summer" Tournament for league members on August 2 nd and 9 th, followed by the Shootout Competition on August 15 th, and the end of the summer period of MGA golf, and the beginning of the fall season of MGA golf. The "Boys of Summer" Tournament divides the playing field into two teams created through a Captain's draft. It is like a Ryder Cup format in which the winning team is the team that collects the largest number of points during the two-week tournament. The team captains for this year s event were- returning champions- Pete Bianchi and Joe Palermo (three time defending captains) leading the Goldern Gloves team and newcomers Bill Boyer and Mike Rowlands in charge of the Pin Seekers. After two weeks of exciting golf playing a variety of games, the points favored the Golden Gloves earning a fourth championship title for Bianchi and Palermo. On August 22nd the MGA had the summer Shootout Competition, which ended the summer period of golf. The top 10 golfers who scored enough game points to compete were in competition against each other in a shootout to the last man event. This period the shootout golfers were: Pete Bianchi, Jack Hinsch, Bill Boyer, Frank Ligon, Jerry Chiddister, Bob Stansfield, Tom Sweeney, John Quackenbush, Dick Boulds, and Mike Rowlands. Congratulations to Jack Hinsch for surviving the ordeal of challenging play by a phenomenal chip-in put on a playoff with Pete Bianchi. The MGA golf season is divided into periods of time as follows: Winter Golf (January to April), Spring-Summer Golf (April to August), Fall Golf (August to December). Each period of the season has a variety of games that are played creating interesting competition, challenge, and camaraderie among our 100+ members. Each week points are assigned to winners and these points create the end of period shootout leader board where the top 10 individuals compete in a shootout to the last man playoff earning a nice cash prize. We began the Fall Golf Period on August 16 th and the slate was wiped clean and all MGA members began competing for points to be in the next shootout in January. What a great time for non-mga members to join us in this great game we all enjoy and to be part of a great group of guys. Men interested in joining the MGA should go to our website at ghmga.com and complete a membership application and submit it and a check for $40 to the Pro Shop. We encourage any guys interested in being a part of a fun group that enjoys the game of golf, and the camaraderie that is associated with it to be part of our league. For more information see any of the MGA Board Members. (l to r) Billy Van Ardsdale, Captions Palermo and Bianchi, MGA Tournament Director John Douglas, and MGA President Larry Geiser L-R: Larry Geiser, MGA President, Billy VanArdsdale, Jack Hinsch Shootout winner, Rich Kawa MGA Treasurer, Pete Bianchi, Shootout runner-up.
