I hope you got to enjoy some of the great golf weather we experienced here in January! If you are just arriving for season, you will certainly notice how green everything is thanks to the mild weather. Kudos to the golf maintenance team! While they continue to keep the golf course in great condition, they have also made a significant dent in the hurricane clean up with the help of our outside contractors as well. We have a ton of things planned for the upcoming months that we are all looking forward to hosting! From Dinner Dances, to competitive golf to a bus trip to Black Diamond; be sure to watch your and read the newsletters for all the details. Valentines Day is just around the corner and we are running a Secret Valentine Sale in the Golf Shop to help you find that perfect little something for your sweetheart. After you select your items for purchase from our line of in stock tops and bottoms, pick a secret valentine from the basket to reveal your discount from 25% to 50% off. Then write your name on the valentine and we ll put it in a Valentines Day drawing for a cute stuffed animal. Next up is the Couples Club Championship. 36 holes following four different formats keeps this interesting to the end. Will our 2016 Champions Tom Mansfield and Joan Callahan successfully defend their title or is there another couple waiting in the wings? Full event details can be found on page 8 of this newsletter. Our Women s Member Guest Committee is already hard at work planning another fantastic golf party... A Florida Par-Tee to be exact! Ladies invite your friends to come celebrate all things Florida and enjoy some great fun, food, golf and prizes on March 30, 31, and April 1st. Flyers will be out soon but in the mean time start making plans; you can invite up to three guests! Last year was a tremendous success and the momentum is continuing to build - come join us! Ready for a little golf trip without the hassle of the drive? A Bus Trip to Black Diamond is scheduled for May 22nd, which not coincidently is when we will be closed to aerate greens! You can make up your own pairings and play your own games or we can pair you up. We ll leave Grand Haven in the morning by bus, grab a box lunch when we arrive, warm up on the range then shot gun at 12:30 on the Quarry. Dinner at the club after golf then back on the bus and home that evening. Pricing is still being worked out and will be available soon. If you haven t had an opportunity to play the Quarry at Black Diamond yet this is your chance! One foot note - we are required to keep carts on the path on the Quarry holes #13 thru #17 with no acceptations. Please be prepared to do a bit of walking! Those are the highlights for now as I am running out of space and you are probably running out of room on your calendars. But just to pique your interest, we have several great product demo days, trunk shows and new vendor promotions lined up this spring so keep an eye on your for announcements. Before I close, I want to acknowledge the great job our Handicap Committee has been doing for all of us. This is truly thankless work that is vital to the integrity of the game itself. Please continue to help us help ourselves by posting scores within 48 hours of play and turn in your scorecards. We have moved the scorecard return back to the slot by the handicap computer to hopefully make it even easier for you to drop your cards. Don t forget your full names and date too. And remember to send our Handicap Committee a little love this Valentine s Day!

2 The Nineteenth Hole The turf has stayed reasonably green and has held up well. We will continue to battle the wear on the tee boxes and cart traffic areas. In fall of 2016 we began closing random tee boxes earlier than past years. Have a great round or a great shot while golfing? Share it with our golf pro or click here the golf shop and it will be featured in the next newsletter. Page 2 Turf Talk By: TJ West, Superintendant The weather pattern for this W inter co nt i n ued i n J a n u a r y d r y a n d warm! 2.17 of rain was recorded, however 1.6 of that fell on January 7th. With the rain total in January, we have received exactly 3 of rainfall since Hurricane Matthew. We only saw two frost days during January. The coldest morning, 36 degrees, was January 31st. During January of 2015 we recorded 4 frost days with a few of those days in the low 30s. February is usually one of the coldest months in our area of Florida. However, as I write this newsletter, the first two weeks of the month look fantastic! We are still mowing grass, but at a much less frequency. We are currently mo wing rough biweekly, tees/fairways are being mowed one time weekly, and greens are being mowed as needed based on air temperature. Mornings below 45 degrees we are rolling greens instead of mowing. This helps in protecting the plant from possible damage. The frequency of all mowing will continue to be adjusted based on the weather. We have scheduled the first of 4 bulk fertilizer applications for the s e c o n d w e e k o f February. One application a month will be performed from February to May. The turf has stayed reasonably green and has held up well. We will continue to battle the wear on the tee boxes and cart traffic areas. In fall of 2016 we began closing random tee boxes earlier than past years. It has worked, to a degree. I am aware that some tee boxes will get worn out no matter what is done. Cold weather substantially hurts the recovery time. We will continue to patch these areas with sand and give them more attention as we progress toward Spring. Many members have talked to me in reference to etiquette of fellow golfers. I have attached an article from The USGA that talks about practices to both do and avoid on greens. A few of the other etiquette requests are Please fill and smooth Great Shots & Great Rounds a divot after a shot is hit. Please enter/exit a bunker from the low side and rake the bunker after a shot is hit. Please adhere to tee locations as we continue to protect areas. Please adhere t o r o p e s / s t a k e s a n d directional signs. Please use the 90 degree rule and avoid driving near tees and greens. Following these few details will go a long way in making a round of golf more enjoyable for all! Shaw Tree Service will remain on property until February 8th. They are done a great job so far! Although Shaw will remove a bulk of the trees/debris, there will be some areas that we will have to address ourselves. I am aware that because of their equipment size, some cart paths have been damaged. We knew this may happen before the project began and Shaw will fix many of the areas upon completion of the tree project. Spring is coming and we are looking forward to the return of growing weather! I can be reached by , twest@grandhavengc.com, for questions or comments. Tom Smith started the New Year off right by holing a wedge shot for an Eagle 2 on the par four 6 th hole New Year s Day while playing with his wife Pat Smith. Tom used a sand wedge for his Eagle. Cindy Hartwell Eagled the par five 11 th hole January 4 th with an 8 iron shot from 105 yards away. Cindy s Eagle was witnessed by Beth Branick, Marcia Hayton, and Cathy Lindstrom.

3 Volume 4, Issue 2 This past month the Golf Shop Staff began sending a standard letter to each member who has had a penalty score issued to their scoring record for not posting on a day when they played. This is one of the duties that your Handicap Committee is responsible for. You as a member are allowed to use the U.S.G.A. handicap program. The U.S.G.A. set From the Golf Shop By: Billy VanArsdale the guidelines for every club that wishes to use the system. I don t really know the exact numbers but I can tell you we are one of a select few clubs that really carry the program out properly. Golf has always stood alone in the way it is governed, by the participants. You are the referee, you are the judge, you make the decisions. Every member at this club should be very proud of the fact that you can say Grand Haven carries out the U.S.G.A. handicap program properly. The next round you play with a member of another club ask them, does your club have a handicap committee that checks scores and really administers the handicap system properly? I doubt if they do. 4 LEAGUE NEWS The Nineteenth Hole Grand Haven Men s Golf Association By: Mike Tebbano On January 10, 2017, MGA golfers witnessed an outstanding display of skills, passion, fire, inspiration, drinking, and the highs of championship golf and the agony of defeat. The quarterly shootout competition occurred on the front-nine of the Grand Haven Golf Course where Hawley Rogers, won the coveted Fickle Finger of Fate Award, and a monetary prize from the MGA. We had a cold afternoon for the competition, but all of us witnessed some hot golfing with strategy, skill, intrepidity, and humor found by all concerned. Our ten competitors participating in this coveted competition were Dick Munsterman, Dave Jaworski, Pete Bianchi, Jack Hinsch (champion of the last shootout in September), Bill Boyer, Hawley Rogers, Frank Ligon, Mike Rowlands, Jerry Chiddister, and Mike O Brien all of whom earned the necessary points to compete in the shootout from points earned since September Each week of the quarter from September to December, MGA members earn points based on their participation and competition in our weekly game-of-the-week. At the end of the quarter the top ten league members compete in a shootout on nine holes of the Grand Haven Golf Course to the audience of members and spouses, and all the free beverages provided by the MGA. This quarter we were assigned to the frontnine and observed outstanding competition by all ten competitors. As each hole is played one of the competitors is eliminated until our game of MGA King of the Mountain is complete. By the time we got to Hole #9 two of our ten were left standing and faced off in the final round. Hawley Rogers and Bill Boyer were the last two to make it to the end and an exciting play-off by both golfers witnessed Hawley being crowned with the coveted Fickle Finger of Fate Award and winner of the shootout. Many thanks to these competitors for making our special shootout memorable, and special thanks to the following MGA members who helped our markers, marshals, caddies and forecaddies for our competitors: Ken Moffa, Bob Aiken, John Douglas, John Karlberg, John McNamara, Billy Wood, Art Canino, Bob Stansfield, Steve Schile, Joe Loria, Larry Geiser, Jim Golomb, Bob Malone and Bob Borer. Special appreciation goes to Club Pro Billy VanArdsdale for scoring the shootout and providing information on rules and regulations for a competitive competition. 6 LEAGUE NEWS Newsletter Title Grand Haven Women s Golf Association By: Sheila Tebbano The Grand Haven Women s Golf Association is now 89 women strong. We added one new member in January. We accept GHGC members with a handicap up to 36 and we have members who have very low handicaps and others with high handicaps. Some of our games have mixed handicaps playing together and others allow players to golf with women of similar handicaps. The variety is a strength of our association and allows play- ers to meet and play with people they may not normally golf with. Some of our members have been playing golf since they were very young and others who took up golf later in life. Here is a sampling from a survey from some of our members. Members were asked how old they were when they started playing golf. We have members who didn t begin playing golf until they were in their 50 s and 60 s. This survey demonstrated that you can begin and enjoy golf at any stage of your life. Our membership embodies this fact. Golf is a game that you can play, young or older! We are happy that so many women enjoy the game and participate with us on Tuesdays. Sheila Tebbano, President GHWGA Ladies Golf League of Grand Haven By: Sally Nord Wow, what a month January has been. The weather has been just great for this time of year and it has been wonderful to be out on the golf course. It s also great to have our snowbirds back and playing with us. Congratulations to our January game day winners: Cathy Whitby, Karen Oorlog, Kathy Lynn, and Ann Lema. We are also happy to welcome our newest member, Kathy DiGiore. If you would like to join our nine-hole league, applications can be found in the pro-shop or feel free to contact me for further information. Page 6 Sally Nord LGLGH President wmslnord@cfl.rr.com
