1 Presidents Ramblings Monthly Newsletter of the Mother Lode Model T Ford Club August 2016 Keep on Touring! Summer is definitely here! But we Beat the Heat with another great breakfast tour. It was good to see another T on the road. Jon Boorinakis drove his '15 touring that we have been hearing about lately. Thanks Susie and Gary for putting this tour together. We were back home by 11:30 as the temperature was edging past 90 degrees on the way to a scorching 104. The next activity will be the annual Potluck and Ice Cream Social hosted by Les and Sandy Silveira at their home in Alta Sierra. We have a new member. So a big welcome to Kent and Kristy Keyser. Kent was at the last meeting and sounds enthusiastic to get on the road in their 1911 touring. Please update your roster and with their contact information below in the newsletter. Also remember to check out our clubs Facebook page. Anyone can become a member and post pictures and comments. If you re working on a project, feel free to post a picture or two and show what you are doing on your car or shop project, favorite potluck recipe or an event you are planning or one you attended. 2 2016 Independence Day Parade Dutch Flat, California Everyone that missed the event We had a great time! There were six cars that left Raley s on July 4th. Included in our group were the Bashores, Elliotts, Krezman, Koch, Rodriguez, and Weitzel. When we arrived for the parade there was a full crowd. The parade went around four blocks. The parade organizers claim to fame on this parade is this spectators and participates can use water guns, hoses and water balloons to throw at each other. The parade is set up with blocked off areas along the parade route which are water free. If you are located in a certain portion of the parade you can t throw water or have it thrown at you. They have a parade Marshall that walks along with our cars and reminds people not to throw water at the cars. So I can tell you that most people along the route used that time to reload. All the people watching were very respectful of the cars. At the end of the parade anyone involved with throwing water balloons stayed to pick up the spent balloons. Steve Elliott has a customer of his that owns Little Bear Tree Farm in Alta. The owner invited us to come and have our picnic lunch on the property. There is a creek that runs by the picnic tables with native trout. Steve took us up the hill and showed us the horses he takes care of. Thank you Steve for setting this up. We all had a great day. This tour may become an annual event. 3 Ice Cream Social and Pot Luck, Saturday, August 20 th Les and Sandy Silveira will be hosting this year s Ice Cream Social and Potluck at their home in Alta Sierra, Fairway Glen Place. The event starts at 3:00 and make sure to bring your favorite dish to share. The Silveria s will be at the August meeting for RSVP and sign up. If you can t make the meeting, but would like to attend the event, please call Sandy at And while we are sure there will be lots of tasty eats and treats shared by the club members, a little history on that ultimate summer taste sensation, ice cream might be in order. According Sara Kate Gillingham, Founding Editor of The Kitchn ( the origins of our modern day ice cream can be traced to the second century B.C. and historical figures such as Alexander the Great enjoyed ice and snow flavored with nectars and honey. Nero Claudius Caesar commanded his troops to retrieve snow from the mountains that was flavored with sweet fruits. Some historians speculate that the recipe for a type of simple sherbet was passed on through Marco Polo. In the 16 th and 17 th centuries, the delicacy was evolving in Europe in to what we might consider ice cream with the blending of ingredients such as cream, milk, butter and eggs. It is believed that ice cream made its way to the Americas in 1744 and later evidence shows that both Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were fond of ice cream. With the Industrial Revolution came many technological advances including the ability to refrigerate, process and eventually mass produce foods including ice cream. By the late 1800 s soda fountains were becoming the rage here in the U.S. even though some felt that eating all that decadent and delicious ice cream especially with that over stimulating, fizzy soda water was just a bit too sinful for consumption on Sundays. This lead to the creation of the ice cream Sunday with the intentional omission of the soda water and in an effort to disassociate it with the Sabbath day, the name later evolved into ice cream sundae. So, given that Les and Sandy s T club Ice Cream Social and Pot Luck is on a Saturday (August 20 th ) we should be able to splurge a bit on all the delicious pot luck foods and ice cream and not feel too guilty and just enjoy the afternoon with a great bunch of old car nuts. Just make sure to keep away from any Soda Jerks and you ll be sure to make it to heaven! (EL) Tricks from the Trades Quick, what s the outside diameter of a machine screw? For those who have been around for a while, the answer is simple about 3/16. That s.1875 in its decimal equivalent. And for those hopelessly afflicted gear-head types, that s onehundred, eighty-seven and a half-thousands of an inch Good lord! But, did you know that an 8-32 diameter screw is just twenty-six thousands (.026) smaller? Here s the deal without going into a lengthy discussion regarding the history and nuanced engineering considerations, our current numbering systems used for threaded stuff under 1/4 is really not so complex. Today, we can find, starting with the smallest to the largest, number sizes 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and then they jump to 8, 10, and 12. Here is the trick 0 measures just about.060 or sixty-thousands 3

4 (darn near 1/16 ). To that add the number of the screw times.013. So, as an example that screw diameter would be.060 (always the starting point) plus the quotient of 10 times.013 which is.130 or one-hundred and thirty thousands. Even simpler, just think 60 plus 130 equals 190 (thousands) which is just a tad-bit over 3/16. So, what s the outside diameter of say, a little 4-40 screw? Start with 60 and to that add 4 times 13 and you should come up with a total 112 (thousands). This little trick is useful in not only determining the number size of an unknown screw, the formula can also be used when drilling a minimum through-hole for a given screw size. Realize that this does not have anything to do with the thread configuration, TPI - threads per inch or class of fit, or a tap-drill size More on those exciting subjects in future T Diggins. So get yourself a simple dial or digital caliper and a decimal equivalent chart and roam around your garage or workshop, find some old screws to measure and impress your friends and family with your profound knowledge. And did you know Back in the day there was a number 14 size. You will find 14s on quite a few antique automobiles and other vintage mechanical devices and you will occasionally come across a number tap or die marked as a 14. The screws that originally held the starter covers in our Model Ts were 14s. As it turns out, a 14 is very close to 1/4. In doing the math, starting with 60 and adding 14 times 13, you should come up with 242 (thousands) which is just a little shy of 1/4. (EL) Mother Lode Model T Club Meeting Minutes - July14th, 2011 President John Saylor welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order at 7 pm. Greeter, Junette, welcomed new member Kent Keyser, and also Chip Klind who was present to meet the club, and possibly also become a new member! Each told a short story about how they acquired their Model T s. Sunshine Report - Susie Krezman reported that she had sent a sympathy card to Joyce Weitzel, and a get well card to both Pat Bashore and Mary Ramsey. Secretary Report - Steve Short noted the minutes of the last meeting were printed in the newsletter and asked if there were any corrections or additions. As there were none requested, the minutes were approved as printed. Treasurer Report - Kitty provided the July16 club financial report. We had income from the June meeting Auction, May tour excess funds return, swap meet shirt sale Proceeds, Food 4 Booth returns, and action. Expenses were from the swap meet portable toilet, newsletter, and bank fees. Vice Presidents Report - Susie provided a report on the 4th of July Dutch Flat Parade which provided a good time for all, as the Parade made two laps around the small downtown. The local tradition of having a Wet or Dry water balloon fight was a surprise, but none of our antique cars were given a soaking! This event might be worth doing again this next year. The "Beat the Heat" breakfast tour is scheduled for Saturday July 23. We will tour to Colfax for breakfast at Dine n Dash. Early departure from Raley s will be at 7:30 AM. Ice Cream Social and Potluck August 20 at Les and Sandy Silveira s home in Alta Sierra. The event will start at 3:00 PM. September - We still need someone to do a tour. October - The Lindstedt Fall Colors Tour is now set for October 29th. Details forthcoming

5 Other Activities LOL - (Ladies Out to Lunch) - July 19th, 11:30 AM at Venita Rheas Restaurant in Rocklin. We had two cars at the National Tour in Albuquerque, NM, Brad & Annette Lusk and Jerry & Toni Moore. T-Diggins - Erik Lindstedt reported that he would like to see the membership send him more stories about their cars. Possible themes: What is your cars name and how did you get it? When and how did it become a part of your Family? Erik also thanked those that have changed to copies. Old Business We need a new chairperson for the annual crab feed in February Show and Tell: No new or entertaining stories were delivered this evening. Auction: No items were put up for auction this evening. Tech Tips: No information was offered this evening. Next Board Meeting: Tuesday, September 6th at Round Table Pizza in Auburn : Our popular Club Raffle was held and the proceeds were split by and Rich and Alberta Baughman and Steve Short. There being no other new business raised, a motion to close the Meeting was offered and seconded. John Saylor gaveled the meeting and we adjourned at 7:40 pm. The Mother Lode Model T Club was organized during 1967 and became a member of the Model T Ford Club of America in The club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the personal enjoyment of its members through the preservation and restoration of the Model T Ford and especially through activities involving the use of Model T Fords. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month with the exception of December, at the Sizzler, Lincoln Way, Auburn, Ca. 5:30 pm for dinner, 7 pm meeting. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Model T Fords. Ownership of a Model T is not necessary. Dues - Annual Dues are $20 per family. Members are encouraged to join the Model T Ford Club of America. MTFCA members receive the bi-monthly publication The Vintage Ford, voting privileges in national club and can participate in the many national club tours and events.
