2 About Us For over a century, the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association has worked to promote the true spirit of the game of golf in the Greater Pittsburgh area and beyond. The Association invites you to join our mission by supporting amateur golf in Western Pennsylvania. The WPGA provides its members with tools and information to enhance their enjoyment of the game. In addition to providing a host of member services, the WPGA conducts major amateur golf tournaments, administers the USGA Handicap System, administers the Western Pennsylvania Golf Hall of Fame, furnishes scholarships to employees of member clubs, provides news and information on issues affecting golfers, provides Rules of Golf education, measures courses and provides USGA Course and Slope Ratings. To learn more about the WPGA, visit wpga.org. Tradition The WPGA was founded in 1899 to conduct regional championships. This principle remains one of four primary focuses today. The history of Championship golf in Western Pennsylvania is steeped in tradition. The first West Penn Open Championship and Amateur Championship were played at Schenley Park in Member Clubs have hosted numerous international competitions including the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, Curtis Cup and Ryder Cup. Many players who began their careers competing in Association Championships have gone on to win on all levels of Amateur and Professional golf. Former Champions have captured titles in all four majors. The West Penn Open trophy features four golfers who have won the U.S. Open (Sam Parks, Lew Worsham, Ed Furgol, and Arnold Palmer). Jock Hutchinson, who won five West Penn Opens, also captured a British Open and a PGA Championship. Eben Byers, William Fownes, Robert Kiersky, Jim Masserio and Nathan Smith have all captured WPGA and National Championships. The Association also conducts USGA Qualifying Rounds, which date back to 1927.
