PLACES OF INTERESTS/ENTERTAINMENT Alcatraz Island Tel: 415/ Visible from Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz Island (also known as The Rock) has seen a checkered history. From the 1850s to 1933, when the army vacated the island, it served as a military post. In 1934, the government converted the buildings of the military outpost into a maximum-security prison. Among the famous gangsters who occupied cell blocks were Al Capone, Robert Stroud, the so-called Birdman of Alcatraz, Machine Gun Kelly, and Alvin Karpis. Tours, including an audio tour of the prison block and a slide show, are given by the park's rangers, who entertain guests with interesting anecdotes. Allow about 2 1/2 hours for the round-trip boat ride and the tour. Wear comfortable shoes (the National Park Service notes that there are a lot of hills to climb on the tour) and take a heavy sweater or windbreaker, because even when the sun's out, it's cold there. You should also bring snacks and drinks with you if you think you'll want them. Although there is a beverage-and-snack bar on the ferry, the options are limited and expensive, and only water is available on the island. The excursion to Alcatraz is very popular and space is limited, so purchase tickets as far in advance as possible (up to 90 days) via the Alcatraz Cruises website at You can also purchase tickets in person by visiting the Hornblower Alcatraz Landing ticket office at Pier 33. The first departure, called the "Early Bird," leaves at 9am, and ferries depart about every half-hour afterward until 2pm. Night tours (highly recommended) are also available Thursday through Monday and are a more intimate and wonderfully spooky experience. Arrive at least 20 min. before departure time. Location: Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf. Cable Cars Although they may not be San Francisco's most practical means of transportation, cable cars are certainly the best loved and are a must-experience when visiting the city. Designated official historic landmarks by the National Park Service in 1964, they clank up and down the city's steep hills like mobile museum pieces, tirelessly hauling thousands of tourists each day to nowhere in particular. Location: Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines begin at the base of Powell and Market Sts.; California St. line begins at the foot of Market St 13
PLACES OF INTEREST/ENTERTAINMENT (CONT D) Coit Tower Tel: 415/ In a city known for its great views and vantage points, Coit Tower is one of the best. Located atop Telegraph Hill, just east of North Beach, the round stone tower offers panoramic views of the city and the bay. Hours: Daily 10am-6pm Location: Telegraph Hill Transportation: Bus: 39 (Coit) Price: Admission is free to enter; there is a charge for the elevator ride to the top Fisherman's Wharf Tel: 415/ Fisherman's Wharf is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. Boasting some of the best seafood restaurants in San Francisco, lots of shops, and traditional San Francisco tourist activities, Fisherman s Wharf is a must see for everyone who visits the City. Location: At Taylor St. and The Embarcadero Transportation: Bus: 15, 30, 32, 39, 42, or 82X. Streetcar: F-line. Cable car: Powell-Mason to the last stop and walk to the wharf Golden Gate Bridge The 1.7-mile bridge (including the approach), which reaches a height of 746 feet above the water, is awesome to cross. Millions of people visit the bridge each year, gazing up at the tall orange towers, out at the vistas of San Francisco and Marin County, and down into the stacks of oceangoing liners. You can walk out onto the span from either end, but be prepared -- it's usually windy and cold, and the traffic is noisy. Still, walking even a short distance is one of the best ways to experience the immense scale of the structure. San Francisco Zoo (& Children's Zoo) Tel: 415/ Located between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Merced, in the southwest corner of the city, the San Francisco Zoo provides a welcoming environment for visitors who want to see some of the world s most majestic widelife. Founded at its present site near the ocean in 1929, the zoo is spread over 100 acres and houses more than 930 animals, including some 245 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. The San Francisco Zoo is open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. General Admission Adults $15.00 Seniors $12.00 Children $9.00, 3 and under Free 14

RULES Drug Testing Student-athletes who compete in this championship may be subject to drug testing in accordance with NCAA By-laws and could be determined ineligible as a result thereof. NCAA policy now precludes any prior notification regarding drug testing. If an athlete is selected for drug testing, the athlete will be notified at the conclusion of their play that day. Refer to NCAA Handbook for details. Equipment The type of equipment (i.e., balls, clubs) to be used shall be determined by the individual team and must be acceptable under USGA rules. Golf bags must have the name or logo of the school on them. Players and coaches will be required to use nonmetal spikes during the regional and championships competition. Violations of this policy will result in a two stroke penalty with a maximum of four strokes. As soon as the breach is discovered, the player must immediately make the appropriate changes to conform to the policy. Golf Carts and Caddies Golf carts, pull carts or caddies may not be used by participants in the regionals or championships, including practice rounds. Golf carts will be provided for members of the games committee and selected tournament officials. The use of carts by any other personnel (including players and spectators) must be approved by the golf committee. The only exception to this policy would be if the participant is permanently disabled. A written request must be submitted to the golf committee with accompanying medical statements requesting the use of a golf cart or pull cart. Lineups and Substitutions During registration, the head coach must submit his or her lineup according to playing position. The five contestants from each institution must be determined by the conclusion of registration. A player may be substituted before the first tee time of his team of the first round of the regional or championships, if the head coach notifies the games committee before the first tee time. The substitute must assume the position of the replaced player. Spectators Spectators must remain on cart paths or in the rough approximately 15 yards from the players at all times (including practice areas). There may be no communication between players and spectators that could be deemed advice of any nature for the duration of the 18 holes. All institutional personnel, with the exception of the coaches, are considered spectators. Ringers on electronic devices must be turned off. Spectators must refrain from smoking near the players. 22
Stoppage of Play If play during a round must be stopped, players will be notified as set forth under Discontinuance of Play in USGA Rule 6-8. The following signals will be in effect in the event play is suspended; Discontinue play immediately (for dangerous situation) one prolonged not of air horn or upon verbal notification by a member of the golf committee or a golf rules official. Discontinue play three consecutive notes of air horn, repeated (hole may be completed); Resume play two short notes of air horn, repeated. If play for that round cannot be continued, the policies under Championships Structure shall apply. If a minimum of 36 holes cannot be completed, the games committee will select the regional s representatives to the finals, taking into consideration 18-hole scores and other selection criteria. Tiebreaking Procedures Team ties shall be broken by a sudden death playoff counting the low four scores relative to par on each hole. Play shall continue with new scoring on each successive hole until a winner is determined. The games committee will determine the starting holes. If a playoff involves more than two teams, a shotgun format shall be used. The team playoff will be conducted first, with the playoff for individual spots to follow immediately after the conclusion of the team playoff. Once the shotgun sudden-death format is started, that format shall be used until a winner is determined. Sudden Death Playoff Procedures Teams will draw for positions. For a two-team playoff, the winner of the draw shall have the option of the A or B positions set forth below. For a playoff involving more than two teams, the teams shall assume the drawn letter position (A, B, C, etc.) set forth below. Two teams (A & B; tee off alternately) #5A, #5B, #4A, #4B, #3A playoff hole #1 #3B, #2A, #2B, #1A, #1B playoff hole #1 Shotgun Format Three teams A#5 B#5 C#5 playoff hole #5 A#4 B#4 C#4 playoff hole #4 A#3 B#3 C#3 playoff hole #3 A#2 B#2 C#2 playoff hole #2 A#1 B#1 C#1 playoff hole #1 Four teams A#5 B#5 C#5 D#5 playoff hole #5 A#4 B#4 C#4 D#4 playoff hole #4 A#3 B#3 C#3 D#3 playoff hole #3 A#2 B#2 C#2 D#2 playoff hole #2 A#1 B#1 C#1 D#1 playoff hole #1 23

The format in pairings for a playoff of six teams or more shall be considered with the foregoing format as determined by the games committee. Non-Sudden-Death Tiebreaking Procedure For the purposes of ranking teams for third round pairings, and for situations in which a sudden-death playoff cannot be completed, the following system shall be used to break ties, except as provided elsewhere when ties need not be broken at the championships: Teams 1. Cumulative total of the noncounting scores. 2. Highest cumulative individual total. 3. Second highest cumulative individual total. 4. Third highest cumulative individual total. 5. Fourth highest cumulative individual total. 6. Fifth highest cumulative individual total. 7. Committee decision. Individuals 1. That round s score. 2. Score from previous round(s). 3. Coin toss. When a tie exists within a team, the individual with the lowest team position will be given the later tee time. The foregoing procedure will also be used if a cut becomes necessary at any time after the completion of the second round of play at the championships. Uniform Contestants must wear uniforms of the same color during competition and practice. Walking or Bermuda shorts are permitted, provided they are team shorts and are of the same color. Slacks or shorts may be worn at the individual s discretion, provided they are of the same color and are considered the team uniform. If a student-athlete wears headgear during competition, it must display only an institutional, conference or NCAA logo, or no logo. If there is no logo, a coach s or team member s headgear must be of an institutional color. A manufacturer s logo may appear on the side or back of the item 24
as long as it conforms to NCAA Bylaw Team members are not required to wear the same headgear. In the best interest of intercollegiate golf and the championships, participants must wear appropriate golf attire at the tournament site. 25
