PAUL LAWRIE FOUNDATION REPORT 2011
MESSAGE FROM PAUL L ooking back over the 2011 season I m delighted to report another successful season for the foundation. This is our 10th year of being involved in junior golf and I feel we have really moved forward this year and I am very, very proud of what we do. We hope the foundation continues improving and we look forward to the next 10 years. This year the foundation has its own website and the feedback has been fantastic our brand and web partner Hampton Associates has done a great job. Kids and parents are able to see what is going on, book events, view results, ask questions and even more so feel part of the foundation. 300 kids have registered on the site and nearly 8000 different people have visited since we went live. The website is a fantastic way of communicating and we now have the tools to push forward for next season. In other achievements this season, foundation team member David Law won his second Scottish Amateur Championship, the South African Northern Amateur Open and the Northern Open, Phillip McLean qualified for the next stage of tour school and Laura Murray won the North of Scotland Ladies Championships. As always we can only achieve what we do with the support we receive from golf clubs and our corporate sponsors; I cannot thank them enough. Yours Aye Paul Lawrie Foundation

Newburgh FLAG EVENTS Flag events were held over the season at venues throughout the North East and the final event was once again held at Deeside Golf Club. The format of the flag events allows the kids to hit 36 shots on a shortened course and leave their flag where the 36th shot stops. This is a fantastic format that allows the youngsters to get involved and enjoy golf. It is great to see how much the kids improve during the season and we also see them progress to the stableford events. We held events at: Stonehaven, Alford, Turriff, Deeside, Cruden Bay, Newburgh, WINNERS: Under 10 Boys Andrew Lamb Under 12 Boys Tyler Ogston Under 10 Girls Chloe Henderson Under 12 Girls Sarah Black Turriff Kemnay, Fraserburgh, Ellon, Westhill and Inverallochy. The finals day was a bit wet but everyone had a great day. Over the last year we ve been gifting flag kits to clubs so they can run their own events. Kits are in use as far North as Shetland and as far South as the Borders. Alford Final at Deeside Deeside Paul Lawrie Foundation
Stableford Finals Winners STABLEFORDS The stableford events have been even more popular this season with entries increasing. The Under 15 tour has seen many friends made and given all the competitors opportunities to play different courses in a friendly environment as well as learn about etiquette and traditions. Venues: Dunecht House, Stonehaven, Alford, Turriff, Deeside, Cruden Bay, Newburgh, Kemnay, Fraserburgh, and Inverallochy. We ran an order of merit over the season with the top 27 invited to the Finals Day Pro Am at Newmachar. This was a fantastic chance for the kids to play with a pro and pick up tips and advice. The top 3 in the order of merit got to play with Paul who along with the other pros really enjoyed the day. Finals Day Pro Am: Winners: Ian Bratton (Pro), Liam Allan (Longside), Michael Patterson (Longside) and Greg Carrell (Peterculter) Runners up: Peter Smith (Pro), Fintan McKenna (Alford), Jack Chalmers (Cruden Bay) and Dylan Smith (Alford) ORDER OF MERIT: 1st: Ross Cooper (Peterculter) 2nd: Cameron Fraser (Oldmeldrum) 2nd: Ross Powell (Deeside) MATCHPLAY The season long matchplay tournament finished with semi-finals and finals being played at Newmachar Golf Club. Each club nominated 2 boys and up to 4 girls to represent them in the scratch matchplay. Christopher Lamb had home advantage over Newmachar and ran out deserving winner of the boys event beating Lewis Mutch in a tight final. Kimberly Beveridge from Aboyne topped off a very successful season dominating the girls events and beating Sophie Alexander in the final. Boys semi final: Lewis Mutch (Duff House) beat Ben Murray (Portlethen) Chris Lamb (Newmachar) beat Ray Gordon (Alford) Girls semi final: Sophie Alexander (Deeside) beat Kirsten Pryde (Deeside) Kimberley Beveridge (Aboyne) beat Tegan Seivwright (Deeside) Matchplay Winners Report 2011
Junior Open Winners JUNIOR OPEN Deeside Deeside was flooded on the first attempt to play this event but we were grateful to get a second date and although a bit wet, the scoring conditions were good. Christopher Lamb (Newmachar) shot a fantastic 2 under 68 to win the scratch by 3 from Sam Kiloh (Portlethen). Greg Morrison (Northern) won the net with 73 less 6 (67) and Kirsten Pryde won the girls with a 85 less 11 (74). JUNIOR JUG Murcar Links was the venue for this year s Junior Jug and we saw a change of format to a 36 hole strokeplay event and as it is part of the SGU order of merit, we had a high quality field. Unfortunately, we had to deal with the tail end of hurricane Katia and the conditions were extremely tough with gale force wind and rain which saw the event cut to 18 holes. Sean Burgess (Nairn) dealt best with the conditions and won the scratch event with 82 and Calum Fyfe (Cawder) won the net with 83 less 4 (79). District Boys Championships NORTH EAST DISTRICT Again this year we supported the junior district teams by supplying uniforms as well as sponsoring the boys championships that were played at Westhill and Alford. Boys Champion: Daniel Thompsett (Aboyne) Under 16 Champion: Craig Lawrie (Deeside) Under 14 Champion: Dylan Smith (Alford) Boys Matchplay Champion: Daniel Thompsett (Aboyne) Junior Open Junior Jug Paul Lawrie Foundation

ABERDEEN AND DISTRICT JUNIOR PENNANT LEAGUE We were delighted to be the sponsor of the Junior Pennant this year. The team event has a long history involving all the clubs in the North East. Matches are played over the season with Deeside beating Stonehaven to win this year s final at Peterculter. Deeside won the Junior Pennant League beating Stonehaven by 3 1 /2 to 2 1 /2. Deeside players first: J Pryde and C Lawrie lost to S Murray and J Halliday 1 hole. D Young and J Loggie beat R McAllan and K Riddell 2 and 1. M Clyne and L Anderson beat G Robb and S Wright 2 and 1. B Henderson and C Sutherland lost to C Douglas and K Brown 1 hole. S Hassard and M Lawrie beat L Davidson and C Davidson 6 and 5. J Hall and R Powell halved with M Jenkins and M McIntosh. Pennant league ACTIVE SCHOOLS The Paul Lawrie Foundation has continued to support golf initiatives with Active Schools Aberdeen City this year in the form of an annual golf festival. This year the festival was held at Aberdeen Sports Village with over 230 children in attendance from primary schools in the Torry, Northfield and St Machar areas. This year there was also a Pre-Flag event at the Beach 6 hole course for children in Primary 5-7, where 20 children took part in the event and received professional coaching from Peter Smith. Children were then sign posted to the flag events. Active Schools Paul Lawrie Foundation
SCOTTISH SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS Again we had a very high quality field for the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Schools Championships at Murrayshall. Scottish Schools Championships The Paul Lawrie Girls Championship was won by Molly Stewart of St Margaret s. Despite a quadruple bogey eight at the fifteenth, the 15-handicapper still had a 3 shot cushion over Kirsten Pryde of Cults Academy and last year s winner, Lauren Watson. Aberdeen Schools Championships Report 2011

David Law GOLF TEAM It was a great year for the golf team with David Law winning his second Scottish Amateur title not to mention the South African Northern Amateur Open and the Northern Open. Laura Murray struggled at the start of the season but turned a corner when she won the Ladies North District Open. David Law has decided to turn professional and we wish him well and will continue to assist in any way we can. Philip McLean has got through the first round of qualifying school and hopefully he can make it through and also turn professional. Kris Nicol from Fraserburgh has joined the golf team and has just got his card to play on the Alps tour. Hopefully Kris will do well in the professional ranks with our support. FOOTBALL All the Foundation football teams are doing very well this season, with four teams playing every Sunday, covering three different age-groups. The 1999 squad are now playing competitively in the Under 13 s league whilst the 2000 squad (two teams) and the 2002 squad are continuing their development in the 7-a-side leagues. We have 50 boys representing the Foundation football teams and all are enjoying their football and developing extremely well. All the squads are working with the player development academy and this is beginning to show with their on field performances. At the start of the season the 1999 squad did very well and qualified to play in the A graded league and are holding there own in the top league and will hopefully retain their status for next season. Laura Murray David, Kris, Paul and Philip Football squads The 2000 squad have two teams playing every Sunday, PLF and PLF Eagles. Both teams entered a Soccer Festival at Stirling University and this proved to be a huge success. The squad will continue playing 7-a-side football until summer Our youngest 2002 squad are doing a lot of good work with the Player Development Academy. Skills and techniques the boys are being coached are being demonstrated in games and it is fantastic to see the boys developing so well and playing with smiles on their faces. Report 2011
COACHING During the winter months we offered coaching at 4 different venues to the competitors in last season s flag finals, due to the harsh winter it was a struggle to do as much as we wanted. Come the spring and summer we provided some short game sessions with Peter Smith and we also supplied coaching vouchers to the stableford and flag competitors. We spent the week of the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart offering coaching to kids in the tented village, we had two pros giving 10 minute lessons all week and we were packed out filling every slot. CURLING John Penny s Aberdeen based junior curling team received funding and clothing from the foundation and went on to win the Scottish Junior Curling Championships. The finals were held in Aberdeen and it was a fantastic win for the boys. John along with team members Colin Dick, Colin Howden and Billy Morton then went on to represent Scotland at the World Junior Championships in Perth. Scottish Junior Curling Champions SWIMMING The foundation is now sponsoring 14 years old Suleman Butt. He is a British swimming champion for 100m freestyle, 400m freestyle, and 100m backstroke. He has been swimming competitively for approx 5 years and trains 15 hours a week. He absolutely loves swimming, and is totally dedicated we hope Suleman can reach the highest levels of his sport.
