2 The Prez Sez: Greetings All, Isn t it nice to see some green grass and birds instead of all the snow and cold weather of winter. Time to brush off all the hair and get back to riding and competing. First of all, a big THANKS to the Central Colorado Chapter of MSEA for hosting a marvelous Spring Meeting and Awards Banquet. Congratulations to all the winners! Second, a few changes have taken place between USEA Area IX and MSEA. We are no longer sharing most of the expenses and joint ventures that we have in the past. A meeting took place between MSEA officers and the Area IX council on January 23, The minutes from that meeting are later in this newsletter. But basically the two organizations no longer share a website, newsletter and a few other joint efforts that we shared for many years. It is sad to see this happen but MSEA will continue to be the communication organization that it has always been. We will also work with Area IX in everyway possible to continue to make the sport of Eventing, the great sport it is. For those of you who are new to the sport here are a few items to consider before you compete: 1) Know the rules! If you re not a member of USEA then become one. Those are the rules you must follow. Knowing the rules will help keep you from being eliminated for a rule infraction! 2) MSEA gives year-end awards in many categories. TO BE ELIGIBLE you must be a member of a MSEA chapter and your horse must be registered with MSEA! 3) Most states require that you have health certificates on all horses you are hauling. Some require coggins tests and brand inspections also. Check individual competitions for details. 4) HAVE A SAFE AND SUCCESSFUL SEASON! Newsletter classifieds 35 words or less, are free for USEA/MSEA members, and MSEA Omnibus Advertisers. Classified that are ed and need no editing get preference. For website classifieds or for information on other online advertising opportunities please visit Most items can be submitted directly online and will be more timely. This is a change to the old policy.

6 MSEA MEETING MiNUTES January 2010 Meeting Pam opened. Proxies from Wendy to Heather; Nicole Ackerman to Judy Tobias. (Pres, VP & Delegates from each chapter have votes). Request for Approval of minutes (printed in newsletter and on website). Move by Heather. Question from Libby: Horse removal list per Horse Registry dated Dec. Website was Jan. Newsletter stated, Horses to be removed per website. Needs correction. Motion to approve minutes passed with correction for Horse removal list. Treasurer s Report: Loss: $1, due to shared expenses w/usea to be paid & decrease in membership, which is national trend, as seen via USEA. Approx. 300 MSEA members. Suggestion: Fall report of membership numbers from Chapters & MSEA total. Suggestion: Website showing total numbers. History: Past report by Barbara showing # members, dues paid, type of dues paid. No need to approve Treasurer s Report. Chapter Reports Big Sky dissolved. Black Hills trying to get up & running. Big Horn currently inactive. CCC Nicole Ackerman: 47 members now + tonight will get more members. Rochelle redoing website & will link in future to MSEA. Boulder Valley Dan: ~32 last year; none yet this year. Last year very successful derby in fall. Creating statement of works. Created scholarships but no takers. Offered & gave jump sponsorships. Sponsored Lory State Park for $500 to rebuild jumps. Lacked local caretaker, now has Tiari (sp?) who created English riding club and took over responsibility for caretaking but needs sponsorship. Removed unsafe jumps & built new ones. Only public facility in area where people can go learn & get help. Current year suffering lack of participation. Need new vision/purpose statement & bylaws & club participation. BVEA decided not to support Lory State Park. Not appropriate for a competition, lower levels only. Lory provided through Prelim, but Denny Emerson reviewed & said not appropriate for Prelim. Speed + Pete Costello not appropriate for Prelim. In competition with bicyclists etc. causing erosion factor. Move course to part of Park not due to erosion. Suggest: MSEA brochure for group there & public what is eventing, how to stay safe, contacts, etc. Digital form so that Kinkos to create a banner. General brochure that can be used at Lory, Spring Gulch, etc. Clinic/demo coordinated with Tiari and any other chapter interested. Suggestion: fun, pizza, wine, beer; speakers; met at a tack shop for 10% discount; strange/novel ideas. Solution? No main barn; pretty diverse. Soliciting involvement & to make people feel welcome. Susan: Goings On link MSEA to other websites. She ll give us the website. Facebook page? Greater Wyoming. Northern Colo inactive. Powder Basin Jamie Gilbert: Spring show April 18 in Camplex flat & jumper show = benefit for a bird refuge. Steve Buckman coming in Spring to lenghthen Prelim course, which will go through derby field. HT July 9 schooling dressage show followed by HT. Fall clinics, jumping show. 20 members currently, but will join through year, esp. b/c give big discounts to members. 10 members came to last meeting; many members live far away and come to events but not meetings.

7 MSEA MEETING MINUTES (Cont.) Teton active, no report here. Western Colorado. Windy Wyoming 31 members as of Jan. 22, usually get more as year goes on because offer discount. Very active club monthly clinics, schooling shows. Schooling jumper show day before HT, which we will offer same format in 2010, but may be schooling show. Omnibus report Judi Tobias. Not ready for Jan. meeting, but will be ready in end of February per the usual timeframe. 3-4 weeks to publish & mail. More schooling show ads/prize lists. Ad fees: prize list, results, so individual chapters don t need individual websites. 8 events chose combination. Income will cover all costs. Not printing as many copies (600 last year, but left over box; so ~500 this year, but will check on final membership numbers before deciding how many to print). Mailing service changes provide better to send in envelopes. Suggestion: membership postcards with Omnibus? Suggestion: complete card with horse registry? Linking databases require complicated conversion. Suggestion: RMDS mails card if requested; otherwise s card & people can print it off if they like. Tool required Dan offered to help create tool. Horse removal list is on the website. Ali can send an update to Heather, who can then convert to Access for Larry & can add to postcard. Suggestion: any changes to membership/horse registration are ed new cards. In past, Libby did Horse Registry 4 times a year. No intention of dropping printed MSEA omnibus. Increase sales of Omnibus to tack shops. USEA awards will be paid & printed in Omnibus. Awards Report Ali Allen-Shinn: MSEA Leading Prelim Horse of the Year should be retired (must contact donor, Western Colo. Chapter, for permission). Could add base to wine cooler trophy. Ali didn t have list of where trophies went. Trouble getting trophies back need solutions. Proposal at organizer s meeting: if trophies (ie. from 2008) not returned, then not eligible for awards (ie. 2009) & points do not count toward next year (2010) until returned & penalties paid. Wall of shame on website motion; second & passed. Form revised for $10/day up to $100. Required return of trophies by Dec. 1 every year. Suggestion: Donated money for perpetual trophy; but keeper trophies will. MSEA Horse Registration Pam: cards issued by ; send hard copies to those who do not have access. Next newsletter will state that cards will be by unless requested in hardcopy & state: see website for Horse Registration Information. 270 registered. Fundraising Report Pam: No baskets. Current: USEA accounting very strict. Waters muddied btwn organizations. Now: discussion. Barbara put together outline of delineated income/expenses. Cathy: learned other organizations separating. Areas not sharing with local chapters, ie. Sharing rosters. USEA wants to focus monies to education. Current standings of shared expenses; going forward separate organizations. Conceptually: agree to separate; Specifically: outstanding expenses to be paid. Larry: Explained shared expenses - Barbara set up (good job on outline by Barbara). Ie. Roster payments. Handout showing expenses & receipts for expenditures: MSEA: $36, v. USEA $33, $809 + printing from newsletter + $135 = approx. $1,500 owed to MSEA. Ie. Newsletter: submissions from either USEA or MSEA & printed. Policy: newsletter editor request articles neither org reviewed before publication. Never a problem in past. Martha: shared expenses through 2009 & then paid & through this meeting. Speaker via USEA clinic. Combined meetings? Combined awards banquet? More input if combined meetings. 13 PSEC Florida Report by Leslie Terry All too soon, the annual Pendragon Stud Equestrian Center trek to Florida has come full circle. Having left on February 6th, they arrived home on March 17th. Rocket, the Wilaby s mini, was taken with the big boys (and girls) when they left but didn t come back to Colorado. Ali met Laura near Ocala to take him to his new home. We will miss his fun and humorous little self terribly at the farm. That left a trailer spot open to bring home Camelot, Team PSEC s adopted horse you may have received my about. We (and I m sure Camelot, too) are grateful to the Wiedenhues family for giving this special guy the loving home he deserves. One of the purposes of the trip was to test those horse and rider teams moving up to Preliminary level this year. They include Lynden Fasso & Dene Court, Ellie Gilbertson & Idle Belles, Madeline Backus & P.S. Arianna and Kala Robbins & Rhythmic Drum. Reports are that they all did very well and look solid and confident. In addition, Madeline competed P.S. Irish Treasure at Preliminary for the first time, finishing 1st in the Rocking Horse Derby and 6th in the RH Spring Horse Trials. Many thanks to Jerry and Sandy Fasso for all of their help and support on this trip. And of course, to our fearless leader, Laura Backus. Also, after completing the hotly contested Pendragon Stud Equestrian Center s 3show Winter Hunter/Jumper series, we are proud to announce that Sophie Slade and Ben are the 2009/2010 Champions. They were awarded an embroidered "Champion" blanket. Congratulations!
