THE WOODEND WHINNY Hi all, PRESIDENT S REPORT By Russell Manton What a busy time it has been at WPC! Firstly, I would like to thank all the members who put a lot of work into making the presentation night and 40 th anniversary reunion a great success for all. I spoke to many former members during the night and they were very impressed with how the club is running, the recent improvements and developments and there were also lots of positive comments on how friendly and happy the current members were. Well done to all! Anyone who has not paid their $15 per family or for their silent auction goods on the night, please see Judy on Sunday. Also if you have not paid for your Lowden entry fee or your uniform, could you see Judy. As you all know, in the past two years we have hosted a zone event, the Lowden Family Shield, which has been most lucrative in terms of the amount of money made by the canteen. This money has been used to buy lots of new equipment and improve the clubrooms. This year the committee has decided to host another zone event, but this time it will be the showjumping championships, the Fimister Shield. This will take place on Sunday, October 31, and, like the Lowden, we would like a large team of members to represent our club. If you ve never done a showjumping event before, this is a great one to start with! We will start to take down names for the team from this weekend like the Lowden, the club sends in one entry form with all riders listed. Recently I met with some council representatives regarding the buildings on our grounds. As most of you would be aware, the small hut near the handy mount ring has been vandalised and set fire to recently. All buildings on the grounds are heritage listed so we have been discussing how best to utilise, protect and manage them. The small tin shed on the right as you head up to the clubrooms will be demolished, the next shed will be restored and we are in discussions to move the structure so we can utilise it for shelter and administration purposes near the jumping arena. The central hut will be restored and secured properly to deter vandals and we have been offered the use of this by council should we require it. In most exciting news, the brick building beyond the clubrooms will be opened up and restored so we can take this over and use it as our meeting room/theory study room etc. We will have to do some working bees to ensure all this works out but in the end it should give us better facilities at the grounds and by using and securing these buildings it should further deter vandals. Look forward to seeing you on Sunday, happy Father s Day for all the dads kids, make sure you get up early to give Dad brekkie in bed before you head off to pony club! Cheers, Russ Woodend Pony Club Inc., P.O. Box 277, Woodend, Victoria, Association No. A D Page 1

DISTRICT COMMISSIONER S REPORT By Melissa Cowburn Hi kids, I am going to be short and sweet this month! Well done to all those out and about competing especially the showjumpers at Bullengarook, what a great warm- up for the Fimister Shield that we will be hosting in October! We have another jam-packed rally sadly, Jenny Walker had to cut her holiday short but, luckily for us, she is now coming to teach handy mount for a bit of fun. Jenny will also be going through the flat work component with our girls who will be riding on the 18th of October for their final C Certificate assessment - good luck, girls! We have Leigh and Jason teaching flat on the main sand arena, Selina back again doing showjumping,, Paul will do Cross Country, Bec will be teaching games and Pauline will be in the shed teaching theory and hopefully will have some certificates to hand out. Don't stress about the groups this rally - please no phone calls unless I have left you off the list! I have had to move people around a little to allow some specialised C certificate work and to try and keep our groups even when our numbers are down a little. Could the Shetlands group who have a free lesson first assist Jenny Walker in setting up the handy mount. Also they will need to be at the first cross country jump at 10am for gear check. FINALLY A BIG HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL THE WONDERFUL DADS! THANK YOU FOR GIVING UP YOUR SPECiAL DAY TO WATCH YOUR GORGEOUS CHILDREN RIDE! Sorry to my dad and husband, no eggs benedict in bed for you guys now I'm DC, unless you want to get up really early! Happy Riding, Melissa PREVENT WHAT CANNOT BE CURED! It is that time of the year again, and due to all the rain and warm days we have had already experienced, founder/laminitis season is well and truly upon us. Laminitis is such a painful and crippling disorder which doesn't just affect fat little ponies. It is so important that every horse or pony owner is aware of the signs, but more importantly have the knowledge to prevent it before it occurs. Now is the time to make preventative changes to minimise the chances of your horse or pony succumbing to this potentially fatal disease. Signs of acute laminitis include the following: Lameness, especially when a horse is turning in circles Heat in the feet Increased digital pulse in the feet Pain in the toe region when pressure is applied with hoof testers Reluctant or hesitant gait ("walking on eggshells") A "sawhorse stance," with the front feet stretched out in front to alleviate pressure on the toes and the hind feet "camped out" or positioned further back than normal to bear more weight. Signs of chronic laminitis may include the following: Rings in hoof wall that become wider as they are followed from toe to heel Bruised soles or "stone bruises" Widened white line, commonly called "seedy toe," with occurrence of seromas (blood pockets) and/or abscesses Dropped soles or flat feet Thick, "cresty" neck This information plus much more on being proactive to reduce the chances of your horse or pony foundering can be found on these websites: S ECTION[@ID$eq$SECTION_934]&affp= & Page 3

Fimister Schedule 2011 THE COMPETITIONS AND MANNER OF JUDGING The following events are run under Table A and the specified Articles contained in the FEI rules Class 1 - Two Phase. (Article ) This competition comprises two phases run without interruption, each at an identical or different speed, the finishing line for the first phase being identical with the starting line for the second phase. The first phase is a course of 7 to 9 obstacles with or without combinations. The second phase takes place over 4 to 6 obstacles, which may include one combination. Riders penalised in the first phase are halted by ringing the bell after they have jumped the last obstacle or when the time allowed for the first phase has been exceeded, after crossing the finishing line of the first phase. They must stop after crossing the first finishing line. Riders not penalised in the first phase continue the course, which finishes, after crossing the second finishing line. The manner of judging this competition must be specified in the schedule in accordance with one of the following formulas: First phase Second phase Placing 5.2. Table A Not against Table A Against According to the penalties and the clock the clock time in the second phase and, if necessary, to the penalties in the first phase. In a team that has been eliminated, the eliminated riders will be allocated the same number of penalties as the competitor with the highest total of penalties over the same round, plus 20 penalties in addition, the three best scores will be totalled to give a team score. Class 2 - Competition over Two Rounds (Articles , 3.3) 1. This competition comprises, with the same speed, two courses, identical or different, either in track or in number of obstacles or in the dimensions of the obstacles. Each rider must participate with the same horse. Riders, who have been eliminated or who have retired during the first round, may not take part in the second round and may not be placed. 2. All the riders have to take part in the first round. The following go forward to the second round according to the conditions of the schedule: 2.1 All riders First round Second round Jump-off Table A Table A Starting order Starting order 3.3 Against the clock or not against the clock Against the clock Reverse order of penalties and possibly time in the 1st round No jump-off 4. Placing 4.3 Riders will be placed according to aggregate penalties over both rounds and the time incurred in the second round. Class 3 Table A2 (Article ) 2. Competitions against the clock 2.1. Athletes with equality of penalties for any place are placed in accordance with the time taken to complete the round. In the event of equality of penalties and time for first place, there may be a jump-off over a shortened course over obstacles, which may be increased in height and/or spread in accordance with the provisions of the schedule.

PCAV Showjumping Points System Once places have been determined for each event, this points system is used to determine the final overall places. This applies both the Fimister Shield and Presidents Cup scoring. Place Event 1 Points Event 2 Points X 1.5 * Event 3 Points 1 st nd rd th th th * Event 2 being the two round competition, is scored with an extra 50% Presidents Cup Competitors must compete in all three events to have the results of the Fimister Shield events counted towards their Presidents Cup score.

Central Zone holds a range of events during the year. Some are specific to our Zone whilst others are qualifying events for State competition. The dates and likely venues for these events are published in the Zone Calendar at the beginning of each year. Here is some information about them: The President's Cup is a perpetual award introduced by the Central Zone in It is given to the best performing show jumping rider from the Zone in each grade for the year. To be eligible, riders must compete in a minimum of two qualifying events during the year, plus the final round which is held on the same day as the Fimister Shield. The Fimister Shield is an annual show jumping competition run by the Central Zone. The event is designed to give all grades of rider (from PE to PA), experience of different kinds of show jumping events. Riders who place or win an event on the day, receive points for their Club. The scores for each rider on the day are aggregated towards their Club score and the Club with the most points wins. This competition was created to honour the memory of Frank Fimister, who as a foundation member of Findon PC went on to reach great heights in the Pony Club movement. He was also a top performer in show jumping and eventing. At the time of his death (in a level crossing accident) in 1968, he had been selected to the training squad for the 1968 Mexico Olympic Equestrian Team. Three of his horses subsequently competed with distinction on the British and European circuits. The Lowden Family Shield is a Gymkhana style event run by Central Zone. It was started by the Lowden brothers of Kilmore in the 1960s to encourage riders in a range of equestrian activities. The programme for this event usually includes a mix of activities from pony club show rings, to games and handy mount activities. Children of all ages and levels are encouraged to take part. Riders receive points for their Club if they place or win an event. The Club with the highest tally receives the Shield for that year. The Central Zone Games, Flat and Musical Rides Teams Championships are usually conducted in April and are also the qualifying event for the state championships usually held in June at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre. Each zone conducts a qualifying competition to select club competitors for these competitions. A games team consists of 7 riders who take part in activities such as bending, stepping-stones, flag and drum etc. Usually one or two of the games is changed each year. The Flat Team consists of 4 riders who are required to carry out a rehearsed test together. They are then broken into pairs and each pair of riders does another rehearsed test. Finally, the four riders are given 10 minutes to prepare an unrehearsed test and do this on the day of the competition. Whilst a separate team may enter the Musical Ride section, a Flat team may also take part in the Musical Rides part of the competition. The Central Zone Show Jumping and Dressage Championships are held in December and are also the qualifying event for the state championships.one of the Zones in Victoria hosts the state championships in February each year. The Showjumping component is for PA, PB and PC combinations. Dressage competitions are for Grade 1, 2 and 3 riders. State Horse Trials State Championships are usually held on the first weekend in May. This is a three-phase competition of dressage, cross-country and show jumping for Grade 1 and 2 riders. Grade 1 riders wanting to compete in this event must qualify by completing two Grade 1 accredited Horse Trials in the 12 months prior to the Championships, without elimination or

incurring more than 60 jumping penalties in the cross-country. Grade 2 riders must complete three Grade 2 events. According to PCAV rules, at least one qualification must be gained during the calendar year of the Championships. Each of the ten zones, in rotation, host this event. The State Inter-Zone Teams Horse Trials were usually held soon after the State Horse Trials Championships at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre in May. It is for Grade 3 and 4 zone teams. In Central Zone, riders must qualify in their grade by completing 2 events in the 12 months prior (at least one in the current year) without elimination and with no more than 60 penalty points in the cross-country phase. Each Zone may enter 3 teams of 4 riders in each grade to compete. Extra riders may also make up composite teams. All riders who compete are eligible for a State Level Competitor's badge. Central Zone Inter-club Horse Trials (the Equestrian Club Supplies Shield). The inaugural event was held on May 29, 2011 at Tullamarine PC grounds. Riders who place or win on the day received points for their Club. The scores for each rider on the day were aggregated towards their Club score and the Club with the most points won the shield. This is planned to be an annual event. ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN KNOWING MORE ABOUT THESE EVENTS OR LOOKING AT RECENT RESULTS, PLEASE SEE THE CENTRAL ZONE WEBSITE,
