1 THE WOODEND WHINNY Hi all, VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT By Glen Rivers Big news this month is WPC taking out the Fimister Shield- well done team! The Fimister Shield, held last Sunday was a huge success due to everyone s hard work and great riding by our kids. Not only did we win the Shield, but also we made more than $2,000 for the club with the canteen and raffle. Thanks heaps to everyone who was involved in organising this great event. Thanks to John Winter and helpers for preparing the theory room. It was a big hit with the zone management and they also extended thanks for the great lunches. Also thanks to the canteen organisers and all the helpers who worked hard all day, especially those families who had no children riding such as the Stobies, Breiers, Mahons, Gajics and Ronnie Graham who helped transport jumps! Apologies if I have forgotten any names in that group. A special thanks to Dr Tim who helped out with the one emergency of the day. Theory room: We will continue painting this room each rally so wander over if you can help. Also looking for helpers at rallies to help Ellie clean up the storage sheds. Wander over if you have spare time and just do a little bit. Every bit helps. The December rally will be at the grounds by popular demand. Expect Freshman s jumping; dressage; team ride and a special junior trail ride at the grounds. This will be followed by unmounted games so dress appropriately. Parents: there may be a special visitor you know what to do! New Pony Club member regular hints and tips: check out the notice board in the shed and the newsletter. Workbooks: please remember to bring your relevant certificate workbooks to theory with Pauline Riding pony show 16 th December: reminder to pop this one in your diary, as it will be held at our grounds. Apart from being fun to watch, help is required in canteen for those who can make it. We will only need about 6 people and a purchaser/ co-ordinator. This is an easy club fundraiser and way to have a look at the ponies while there. Just Helen Breier if you can assist. Important dates: November 4 th Rally day Sun 2 nd Dec Final Rally/junior club trail ride/musical rides and fun (at the club grounds) Sun 16 th Dec Riding Pony show. (Canteen assistance required) Mon 26 th Jan Australia Day Show- lots of help needed stewards; canteen; set up pack up March 22 nd /23 rd Whinbury camp at Angelsea (confirm numbers with Judy by Dec rally and payment Feb- see notice board) Woodend Pony Club Inc., P.O. 2 DC s REPORT By Melissa Cowburn Hi kids, Well what an exciting event we held last weekend. Congratulations to all our riders for WINNING THE FIMISTER SHIELD!!! What a great day last Sunday was!!! A huge thank you to everyone who pitched in to help make this day a successful one for our pony club but especially to Ellie and Glen who did so much work behind the scenes to help make the day run so smoothly. I was told Woodend hasn t won this award since 1998! I hope you all enjoyed the last rally. As most of you know I was on my way home from the interschool nationals in Toowoomba, QLD with Lily s pony and what a road trip that was!! So again a big thank you to Ellie for running the rally. We have some fun and different activities happening this rally starting with unmounted buddy activities. A big thank you to Tahnee for organising this. It is going to be heaps of fun and a great way for all you kids to get to know each other and for the older ones to pass on some tips and help to the younger members (who don t always want to listen to their parents or the instructors!!) After lunch we will be having a dentistry session with and he will be talking to us about dental care of our horses and how it can effect all aspects of their behaviour so if you have a horse that throws its head around or is hard to bridle or worm it will be worth your time to speak to Peter. Groups are bigger this rally to help accommodate all the special activities and Jenny Walker will be working on team riding so we can start to look at putting some flat teams together. We will also soon be putting forward a couple of surveys asking what you would like to do for our Christmas rally and suggestions for our rally format for next year so look out for the surveys which you will be asked to fill in at our December rally. Some Camp information - March 23-24, Some facts: Accommodation: Camping (bring tents, caravans etc). No power. (There are beds in the hut but you d be sharing) Costs: $25pp per night with horse and $20pp per night without. Camp kitchen hut, recreation room, toilets etc. Cabins at Angelsea or Freshwater Creek at caravan parks (10 mins away) need to book soon though. There are three paddocks which can hold quite a few amiable horses in each; 3 large yards suitable for three or four horsey friends each; 7 yards suitable for two or three horsey friends each; Those with portable yards can bring them; There is a large dam suitable for swimming horses but supervisory care is needed for young kids required as they can access; Dogs are allowed provided they are friendly to people, horses and other dogs and generally controllable; Motorbikes allowed (for the Dads and other non-horsey types); Private and group lessons are available if booked. There is an arena. Private lessons are $55. And groups of 4 or 5 $25pp. We are welcome from Friday night. It is proposed to have a couple of different level trail rides organised for the Saturday in the area of the camp, a group dinner and then Sunday beach ridetiming depends on the tide. As horses will need to be floated to the beach (about 10mins away) people could pack up first and leave directly from the beach for home. Melissa Page 2

8 FRANCE ON HORSEBACK If you were to write a bucket list for horse enthusiasts, a riding holiday in France is sure to be in the top ten. One could die happy having trekked through the gorgeous French countryside, across farms through dark mysterious woods and quaint villages, along streams and up to the top of hills with breathtaking 360 degree views. That s what the Taaffe-Duffs think anyway after their wonderful six day horse riding adventure in the south west of France in September. Greta, Jenny and Xavier enjoyed a week of riding every day and being waited on hand and foot afterwards at the gite (lodge ) of Derek and Anne Parker s French Riding Holidays. They are based on the outskirts of the tiny French village of Asprieres in the midi- Pyrenees near Toulouse. A maximum of ten riders are catered for and you are based at the lodge doing half day and full day rides out returning each afternoon, rather than moving from spot to spot. All meals- beautiful home-cooked French style cuisine are provided with nothing else to do but relax and enjoy the holiday. We had fantastic weather the whole time with only one morning riding in the rain. There were dozens of different rides all available in just a 30 km radius of the lodge, catering for different levels of challenge, riding skills and weather. We never did the same ride twice. There are bridle paths and public walking tracks everywhere through the countryside and riders are even allowed on private land as long as they are careful not to cause any damage, said Xavier. We rode up and down steep rocky trails as we went from valley to valley, a stunning view around every corner. Our horses were fantastically fit and well behaved and suited to every skill level from rank beginner to highly experienced. We walked, trotted, cantered and even galloped along tracks and across paddocks to provide plenty of variety and excitement. The trop did two full day rides, stopping for lunch under shady trees and treated to a sit down hot lunch of magnificent food and a wine if you wanted. On the last day they spent the morning tackling a cross country course that Derek has built on the property. Riding style was pretty much the English way although there was no sitting to the canter. All had to assume the cross country or two point position for cantering which for Jenny and Xavier was quite tricky. We also had to stand in the stirrups while climbing, once again a challenge for the oldies. Everything was easier for Greta though whose Woodend pony club tuition has obviously paid off. She attracted many compliments from our hosts for her riding, so a big tick for Woodend there, said Jenny. Derek and Anne are English who moved to France and began taking horse riding tours about 20 year ago. They have a list of regulars -many from England who come back every year sometimes twice. If ever you are in that part of the world it s a mustdo. Page 8
