Presidents Report The year of being President is nearly over so I would like to thank the Committee, Samantha and everyone that has given me support & advice throughout the year.it has been pleasing to see so many members showing their horses and enjoying themselves at the events. Congratulations and a big thank you to Anne Hillis and the Benalla group, Cathy & Bruce, Debbie Allan for running the Driving days. These days are important to the Society as they are great Training and Social days & an avenue for Promoting the Clydesdale Breed. Thanks to Debbie Hamilton & the Castlemaine Show Society, Graeme Marriott & the Scottish Heritage Show Committee. The Shows were a great success. Congratulations to all winners & all who exhibited. The Annual General Meeting is on the 28 th August, I encourage all members to attend & have input in the meeting. There are items from the Federal meeting that need to be discussed: 1. Stud Book Rules 53 & The Part Bred Register. 3. A1 & ET Rules. 4. Casual Day Insurance etc. It is important to attend, have your say at the meeting and be involved in the final decisions that are made. Well done to Mathy & Ron Hyder on all the hard work in putting together the Newsletters. Colin has advised me the Year book is at the printers. Again I thank both Tara & Colin, on behalf of all members, for their incredibly hard work. Finally, a big thank you to the small but dedicated committee, Shirley, Noel, Linda, Barb. Louise & Thelma of the National Clydesdale & Heavy Horse Festival This year even though it rained on the Sunday morning was again a successful event and the Committee was able to give $2000 to the Society. An event such as this cannot run smoothly without the help of Volunteers, Sponsors and Exhibiters (76 horses attended) & great Judges. Together with a lot of luck. Well done to all Exhibiters. As my year as President draws to a close, I would like to encourage all members to attend Driving days, Shows and the Festival in the coming year, either as Exhibiters or Spectators. 3 The Editor s Word: As the end of winter edges closer and we impatiently await spring there is something in the air! It is anticipation and excitement of our plans and dreams being fulfilled. We wish all members well as like us, you await the healthy and safe arrival of a new born foal(s). It is a very exciting time but we all know to well, that Mother Nature and Clydesdales are unpredictable. We need to prepare for the worst but always hope for the best. We need to remind you all that the Annual General Meeting of the Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society Victorian Branch Inc. will be held at the Kalkello Hotel, Hume Fwy, Kalkallo VIC 3064 on Sunday 28 th August, 2011 at 1pm. This is a very important meeting and we need as many members as possible to attend to discuss many current important issues and to elect the Office Bearers for the next twelve months. It will be great to see you and catch up with you all. Some of the issues to be clarified are: Royal Melbourne Show 2011 Update; Part Bred Clydesdale Registrar Update; Identification of a Patron for the CCHS Victorian Branch; Stud Book rules 53 &63. I believe we have put together a comprehensive August Newsletter. You can sense the momentum building as we progress into spring time. There is a variety of news, articles, information and auctions to make you aware of so hopefully you can find a quiet comfy chair near the fire and take time to read all about it. We express our sincere condolences to the Tisdall family and friends on their loss of Dr. Peter Tisdall. Junita and Darryl Wiltshire have put a wonderful article together featuring Dr. Tisdall, his love for the Clydesdales and his significant personal input into the breeding of Clydesdales. A definite must read article. There are some very important events occurring over the next few months. So get your pen and diaries out, perhaps even mark them on your calendar. Ron and I wish you all the best as the Royal Melbourne Show is nearly upon us. Led Clydesdale Classes are on the first Saturday of the show, 24 th September. Followed on Sunday, 25th and Monday 26th with Harness Clydesdales and Tradesman and Delivery Classes. A visual feast and an opportunity to catch up with good friends. Make sure you bring a warm coat, a hot drink and sandwich, a comfy cushion and dare I suggest an umbrella. May you all have a good show and your expectations be exceeded. We pray for good weather and everyone (and the horses) stay fit and healthy. Most of all we hope for continued Generosity of Spirit by all competitors. In times where we all feel the pinch of expensive fees to compete and the feeling of declining support from important stakeholders, hold your head high and maintain your pride and humour. Best Wishes Mathy Mathy Hyder Editor Please contact me for anything you would like to have printed in the Newsletter. You can forward it via ronmathy@hotmail.com or you can contact me on telephone no: or by my mobile:

One of his most successful if not expensive endeavours was to import his first stallion Headowork. Headowork Tulloes High Flyer Tulloes High flyer and a new mare Blueton Millennium Lady. Although the Doc had great plans for new mare Millennium Lady, this was not to be. Millennium Lady lost her first foal and died soon after giving birth to her second foal Rosbercon Scotsman (now owned by the Kardinia Stud). However Headowork Tulloes High Flyer (sired by Cawdor Cup winner Collessie Cut Above) did bring Dr Tisdall great success. He bred consistent bay coloured foals with only a couple being bay roan and his progeny have gone all over Australia. High Flyer also gave him success in the show ring with daughters Rosbercon Maggie winning Junior Champion and the George Cox Memorial Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Show and Rosbercon Bridgette Bardot winning a second at the Sydney Royal Show. Both fillies were shown by Daphne Talbot. Dr Tisdall also took great pride in the fact that two of his colts by High Flyer (Rosbercon Casanova & Rosbercon Marcus) went on to become part of the Carlton United Team. These two horses lead the procession for the doctor s funeral through the streets of Kyabram to the memorial service. Rosbercon Casanova has also shown success in the show ring, one of his latest wins was Reserve Champion Gelding at last years Royal Melbourne Show, which I m sure would have put another smile on the doctor s face. He was shown by MrGlen Pate for the brewery. Headowork Tulloes High Flyer died in late January

Blueton Millennium Lady Rosbercon Maggie The doctor also imported another stallion Doura Gigolo who was out of Moneycannon Kiri and sired by Dillars Cracker as well as his last imported, mare Boat Lady Danielle sired by Carnaff Perfection and out of Boat Lady Marion. The Doc held great hopes for his latest imported stallion upon his arrival in Australia but word has it the stallion didn t seem very interested in serving mares at first. So I guess the doctor did wonder for a short time if Gigolo was going to be an investment after all. But living up to his name, Gigolo eventually cottoned on to what he was here for and sired a few foals. His son Rosbercon Macho out of diva Rosbercon Bridgette Bardot first strutted his stuff at the Castlemaine Foal, Filly & Mare Show in 2010 taking out the trophies of Champion foal and Reserve Champion under 3yrs. Later that year he also showed success placing in the top three at the Royal Melbourne Show. He was shown by Mr Max Gray, Dr Tisdalls horse manager at the time. New colt Rosbercon Top Gun was thelatest success for the sire. Top Gun was shown successfully this year at the Castlemaine Foal, Filly & Mare Show for the Doctor by Mr John Mullenger, winning Reserve Champion Foal. This last win at Castlemaine would be the last show ring success the doctor would see. Both Rosbercon Macho and Rosbercon Top Gun were entered for this years Royal Melbourne Show. As with all horse operations one can not do everything alone. Although the doctor was not a hands onhorse person as such he was able to produce one of the largest Clydesdale studs in Australia. From the Narioka and Kardinia Studs in the early beginnings,; Les Quinsee during the years of the winery; Max Gray, Daphne Talbot, John Mullenger & Glen Pate in the times of show success; the behind the scenes management of Ken McLeod, Max Gray and in most recent times Emma Spedding, Jake Wiltshire trimmer of those massive feet in recent times and Glen Pate who in the last few years of his life became a mentor of the horse world for the doctor right up to his death. The list of people goes on and on. Rosbercon Macho Rosbercon Top Gun 7

I guess when you look at this brief list of some of the people who shared Dr Tisdall s passion you can understand best why they were needed. Calculations from the CCHS Stud Books show the doctor bred over 76 registered Clydesdales purchased at least 10 clydesdales and imported 4 others bringing the total to at least 90 registered Clydesdales bred or owned by Dr Tisdall. But the list would not end there as there was also countless other clydesdales who were never registered. This was over a period of 37 years from /08/1939 ~ 26/06/2011 He left behind a legacy in the Clydesdale World which will live on through the pedigrees of the Gentle Giants he loved. JW 8

Hendra Virus: Report: Biosecurity Queensland Briefing Friday 22nd July 2010 to HBMALG Erica Bates QTBA On Friday afternoon 22nd July 2011 HBMALG members were addressed by Chief Executive Officer Science Leader, Dr Linfa Wang from the Australian Animal Health Laboratory AAHL. Dr Wang is recognised as the world s leading scientific authority on Hendra Virus and has been working together with Dr Hume Fields, Principal Veterinary Epidemiologist with Queensland Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases, on researching Hendra Virus and its transmission for over 15 years. His presentation gave HBMALG members an insight into the virus itself and the most up to date findings of research. There have only been a very small number of cases to research, a total less than 60 horses world wide. A lot of data has been gathered but much more data is needed to fully understand how the spill overs from bat to horse occur. There are many variables involved and also the randomness of the spill overs needs to be taken into account. Understanding Hendra Virus itself: but to multiply and live on within them) l host i.e.: horses, it is highly virulent, which means it kills the new host very quickly. It is one of the most virulent viruses discovered to date. like Equine Influenza g animal -60% of urine samples collected from bats, however this does not mean that all bats carry the virus in levels high enough to cause a spill over from one species to another such as bat to horse virus to cause a spill over between species: i.e. One individual bat may have massive levels of the virus and the ability to excrete high levels. This may help to explain the randomness of spill over events. Focus of current research: such as a hormone) in flying foxes in order to develop strategies to be better able to predict potential Hendra Virus spikes that 9

may flag the potential risk of spill over events. i.e. Are family and colony dynamics changing? What is happening to their habitat? What changing stresses occur in their colonies and season to season? Are numbers growing or are they just more visible to us because they are moving into more settled areas than in the past? And if so, why? i.e.: is it possible that one species naturally carries higher percentages of Hendra Virus than others? If so, this may explain in part why certain areas have more spill overs due to the specific bat species present. Why now? Bearing in mind the fact that this virus has been present in bats for a very long time, perhaps since ancient times, why are we only seeing outbreaks in relatively recent times? (i.e. since Hendra Virus was first discovered after the Vic Rail outbreak) There are two main changes that have occurred over past decades and centuries that scientists identify as impacting on changes to virus transmissions around the globe: 1. Human activities in the environment such as: Dr Wang used the SARS virus as an example. Just 30 years ago the area where the SARS virus broke out was a fishing village. Now it is an area supporting millions of people. Farming culture has changed and the whole landscape of the environment is now urbanized. 2. Advances of Technology Continual upgrading of technology has enabled discovery of viruses such as SARS. Just 10 years ago the technology did not exist and the virus could not have been isolated and discovered. Technology for research into Hendra Virus is continually advancing. Developing new technology to enable further research into discovering the facts about transmission between bat / horse and horse / human is ongoing. Where to from here? With the limited data available from past outbreaks (less than 60 individual horses and 2 dozen properties worldwide), it is apparent there is no easy fix answer at this stage of research. An effective vaccine for horses has been developed under laboratory conditions and will be ready for field tests to occur by early The longevity of the vaccine in the system still needs to be determined which could see commercial availability some months later. It should also be mentioned that although the vaccine works well and will provide protection from Hendra Virus to vaccinated horses, no vaccine is ever the be all and end all of managing a disease. In the meantime what can we do? Unfortunately the unpleasant reality we now need to come to grips with is that: The world has changed forever. Hendra Virus and the impacts and issues that arise from it are not just going to go away. It is here and impacting on all 10

horse owners, and we must learn to deal with it as calmly and effectively as possible. Nobody likes this fact, but as we have seen over the past two months, Hendra Virus outbreaks have been on the rise and are not confined to tropical areas or Queensland any longer. While we wait for scientific answers as to why this is so, for further research to keep ourselves and our horses safer, and for the vaccine to become available, we can bear in mind that we are fortunate to have the most knowledgeable experts and facilities available worldwide at AAHL. The experts tell us that given what we already know about the disease, and more importantly what we still need to learn, the best that can be done for the moment is: ze the chance of exposure between bats and horses on a day to day basis In the laboratory and in the field the scientific experts are endeavouring to identify factors that may lead to early detection of potential outbreaks to better enable early warnings, and also how to achieve better responses to actual outbreaks. On our properties we as horse owners can implement good Biosecurity Practices and Risk Management strategies in order to minimise risks to our horses and ourselves. Risk Management It has been determined from evidence discovered at the most recent June-July 2011 cluster of outbreaks that all cases occurred in paddocked horses with access to trees with either fruit or blossoms that are attractive food sources to bats. This is very valuable information. As spill overs of Hendra Virus from bats to horses must occur via droplet transmission, and bearing in mind that the virus is very fragile and does not live long in the environment, planning to reduce the potential for bat activity around our horses is a good first step. Identify trees that may be a potential food source on your property. Some examples of the trees and vegetation where Hendra virus in horses has occurred this year include - a range of fig trees (including the Moreton Bay fig tree), melaleucas (including paperbarks), eucalypts and wattles and passion fruit vines. Other trees known to attract flying foxes include flowering or fruiting trees with soft fruits and stone fruits (e.g. mangoes, pawpaw), palms, lily pillie and grevilleas. Observe your trees for budding blossoms and fruits or learn when this is seasonally likely to occur. Isolate horses completely from any area where bats may roost during the day, and also from the drip zone which is the area directly under and nearby the branches where bats feed. Resultant excrement on the ground and leaves or partially eaten fruit and chewed up spats from the bats may be ingested by horses seeking shelter under trees. This area has been found to be a place where the virus can live longer in a cool moist environment than out in the elements of sun, wind etc. Restrict horses from access under and around these trees during fruiting or blossoming. Methods may include: after the trees have stopped flowering/fruiting and the flying foxes have gone. foxes. They should be returned only fox activity (usually at dusk and during the night) rs from under trees Other general good Biosecurity Practices include: 11

Stud Book Rules 53 & 63 in Volume 34, 2006 or Rule 52(a) & 61(a) In Volume Last year at the AGM members present may recall discussion taking place regarding these two rules. Members discussed a motion put by NSW Branch of the CCHS to alter Rule 53 & Rule 63 in Volume 34, Stud Book Volume 36, 2010 was sent to members after the AGM last year. So it is important to note and be clear that in Volume 36 that the two Stud Book Rules in question where left out in the initial printing. They are now Rule 52(a) & 61(a) in Volume 36, 2010 and have since been added via a Rules Errata sent to CCHS members via mail sometime after. The N.S.W. motion was to accept any UK registered horse thereby reducing the number of pure Clydesdale crosses we presently require. The Victorian branch of the CCHS clearly voted against the current NSW motion. Further discussion has taken place by the elected Victorian Branch Committee regarding these rules, as issues arose from the Federal Council Meeting of the CCHS in April this year. The Victorian Branch of CCHS is still opposed to changing the Rule 53 & 63 in Volume 34 of the Stud Book (or Rules 52(a) & 61(a) of Volume 36 of the Stud Book) to remove the stipulation of four crosses. It was agreed that this issue would be again be raised with members at the Annual General Meeting on Sunday, 28 th, August Members should, prior to the AGM, look at the 2 letters below and refer to your own copy of the Stud Book, Volume , Rules 53 and 63, (or Rules 52(a) & 61(a) of Volume 36 of the Stud Book). Letter One is from Rod Bowles, Federal Secretary of the CCHS. This is self explanatory. The second letter is from Mr. Tim Peel stating his position in relation to Rule 53 and Rule 63, Volume 34 of the Stud Book. At the AGM on August 28 th, time is limited for discussion regarding these rules. Please make yourself familiar with the Rules 53 and 63 from Stud Book, Volume or The Rules 52(a) & 61(a) of Volume 36 of the Stud Book. The Victorian Branch Committee of CCHS are clear on their position but wish to ensure that all members understand both rules as they stand. Additionally the Victorian Committee feels the Rule 63 in Volume 36 of the Stud Book should be left as it stands as Veterinary Evidence suggest there is no chance of twins resulting from Embryo Transfer. The Committee further recommends that the wording of Rule 63(3) needs to be altered to One foal registration per mare per breeding season. 16

Letter 1. (Federal Council) Incorporated Reg.No. A A ABN th July 2011 CCHS State Branch Secretaries, Good Morning Secretaries, RE: - Studbook Rules 53 & 63 Please find attached a dissemination of Information provided by Mr T. Peel in relation to the Studbook Rules 53 & 63 which have been the subject of discussion at the last 2 Federal Council Meetings. Could you please advise your members at your next Branch Meeting and provide your members decisions to the Federal office to be presented at the next Federal Council Meeting to be held on 25 th September in Melbourne. Regards Rod Bowles Federal Secretary Letter 2. A motion has recently been put to the Federal Council of the CCHS in an attempt to have a flexible approach to the term Clydesdale Breeding as it may appear in recognized Clydesdale Stud books overseas. The proposed motion is not a move to introduce an appendix system into the Australian Stud Book. The Motion: The registrar will accept imported Clydesdales for registration in the Commonwealth Clydesdale Horse Society Stud Book, providing they are legally registered in a recognized overseas stud book. The current rules of the CCHS Australia state in (The Commonwealth Clydesdale Stud Book Volume 34 Year 2006) Clause 53:- Stallions breed overseas and registered in Stud Books including the Clydesdale Stud Book of Great Britain and Ireland, must be proved to possess four pure crosses of Clydesdale breeding (that is to say, their sire, the sire of their dam, the sire of their second dam, and the sire of their third dam be of Clydesdale breeding as defined in the following paragraph). (Such stallions will also be accepted at half fee). Clause 63:- Mares bred overseas and registered in Stud Books including the Clydesdale Stud Book of Great Britain and Ireland must be proved to possess three pure crosses of Clydesdale breeding (that is to say, their sire, the sire of their dam and the sire of their second dam must be of Clydesdale breeding as previously defined in the Rules). (Such mares will also be accepted at half fee). 17

In the Clydesdale Horse Society Stud Book of Great Britain and Ireland: Rule 27:- In view E.E.C. regulations and controls and in the best interest of breed improvement, a two-generation Grading- Up Register be incorporated as an Appendix to the Stud Book for an indefinite period, the first cross to be either the produce of a pure registered Clydesdale Mare and a Stallion of Clydesdale type or a Mare of Clydesdale type and a pure registered Clydesdale Stallion. Filly foals of such a mating would be parentage tested and entered in the stud book as Grade-up fillies. Filly foals out of a Grade-up Mare and by a registered Clydesdale Stallion are acceptable for full registration in the Stud Book following parentage testing but colts foals out of a Grade-up mare are not and should be gelded. The problem arises, if someone from Australia was intending to purchase a horse legally registered in the Scottish Clydesdale Stud Book under RULE 27 then that horse would not be accepted into the Australian Clydesdale Stud Book. A classic example of the anomaly in the rules between the two countries arose at the ROYAL HIGHLAND SHOW (2010) in Scotland. The Winner of the Cawdor Cup for Clydesdale females, Woodhouse Sunshine, would not be allowed into our stud book. Furthermore if she was to produce a colt by one of the top Clydesdale Stallions in the U.K. it would not be allowed entry into our stud book under the current rules. The rules in the Australian Clydesdale Stud Book require 4 pure crosses of Clydesdale blood for Stallions and 3 pure crosses for Mares before they will be accepted into the Australian Stud Book. Whereas the Scottish Stud Book requires 3 pure crosses for Stallions and 2 Pure crosses for Mares, for registration into their Stud Book. The proponents of the motion feel that instead of inhibiting our genetic diversity, we should be promoting and broadening it in an attempt to support and improve our breed standard. As any student of pedigrees and genetics learns, an ever narrowing base of bloodlines leads to interbreeding. Inbreeding can occasionally be successful when used judiciously, but when used over a long period without clearly defined aims, it can be detrimental to the breed. Breed purity just for purity s sake leads to genetic senility and all the associated problems that can occur, such as, loss of vigour and size, high foal mortality rates, fertility and breeding issues, deformities and illness that require increasing and costly veterinary intervention. Breed purity and breed standards have to be in balance with each other. When one gains the ascendancy the other suffers. We as breeders have to be proactive and open minded and look for ways of strengthening our breed standard, at the same time eliminating faults and weakness in the breed. We need to produce horses that are relevant to a changing market, now, and in the future. Some of the other draught breeds have already invested in this process. I would like to invite you to consider setting up an Australian display, perhaps your flag(s), horse photos, handouts, and other decorations as you see fit. It should be interesting and informative to the general public and potential new Clydesdale owners. We will provide a booth, 8 x 10, at no charge to you, with full 8 high drape in back and 3 high drapes on the sides. If you need electricity, it is available, however the Alliant charges $100 or more for that service which would be at your cost. Likewise, they charge considerably for providing tables and chairs, but we will try to secure a table or two from one of our Wisconsin members. Someone from your membership (or by arrangement with someone local) would be responsible for setting up and removing display items. Please let me (president) and/or Cathy Behn (secretary) know in the next couple of weeks if you are interested. Look forward to seeing everyone in Madison. Martin E. 26 Flavivirus Neurological Disease in Horses Dear Member You may or may not be aware of the recent increase in neurological disease in horses, due to a flavivirus carried by mosquitoes. Members are advised that further information is available at seases_animals/disease-in-horses-insect/index.html and also on the NSW DPI website at es/health/general/nervous Fortunately as cooler weather sets in this will reduce the mosquito population, and therefore the risk of disease. Anyone who suspects that their horse is affected by this disease should contact their veterinarian promptly. 27 Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival / Street Parade & Moora Working Draught Horse Muster Photographs by Mathy Hyder. Report / Ramblings by Ron Hyder. Big Name, Big Weekend, Big Horses!!! Mathy and I had heard a lot about this weekend through good friend and well known photographer, Kathryn Potempski. Ron & Mathy you have just got to come and see you will be amazed. I m telling you. We heard this many times from her so we really looked forward to going and seeing for ourselves. Easter generally is a great time of the year weather wise but lots of traffic and congestion on the roads is always is a downer. Once we broke free on the usual traffic jams on the Hume Freeway in the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne, the sun began to shine and a delicious ice cream at Nagambie was just what was needed. Earlier on in the morning we received a call from Kathryn advising that she heard on the news that unfortunately a murder had occurred overnight at the caravan park that we had booked into. So what do we do? Affordable pet friendly accommodation is hard to find at the best of times. A quick call to the manager of the caravan park clarified that yes a murder had occurred but she reassured us that it was on the other side of the park. Everything was now settled and the alleged murderer had fled the region. We decided cautiously to continue on to Rushworth. On arrival at Rushworth we found the Caravan Park. It was surrounded by a big fence and lots of semi tropical plants, finding an entrance into the park was challenging and not for the first time on that day. Mathy and I found ourselves at odds with this fact. As usual in our relationship Mathy ventured first into the park by crawling over the locked gate. I meanwhile muttered to myself as she weaved her way through the park to destinations unknown. Eventually she returned to the car. She had met the manager and found directions to our van which had been changed for reasons yet to be made clear. The gardens were beautiful. The caravans I m afraid were frightfully appalling. Our van was dirty, home to a plague of mice and endless huntsmen spiders. As we had the dogs with us for the weekend we very reluctantly decided to stay. Our rationale for this decision, apart from not being able to get accommodation for the dogs was well we are only sleeping there at nights. Our very wise friend Kathryn had arrived earlier, saw the state of our accommodation and wisely chose to stay with Maz Thomas one of the event organisers. Life is full of challenges however take our advice if you choose to go to the Rushworth Festival and Moora Working Draught Horse Day. Take a caravan or stay in your horse truck at the Moora Race Course / Recreation Reserve. It truly is a beautiful location and campsite as opposed to what I humorously refer to as The Lost Island of Dr. Moreau. For those of you who have seen this film then you know where I am coming from. 27

After fleeing the caravan park we drove around Rushworth and Moora and regained some confidence in this close knit community. We met many people camped with their big horses at the Moora Recreation Reserve. It was peaceful, warm and inviting. The campsite was set up in the middle of the reserve with magnificent gum trees, over 100 years old. The colours of the country side where muted greys, greens and browns. It had a timeless quality to it with a mix of beautiful big Clydesdales and Draught Horses either tethered or yarded nearby. The campsite had an enormous fire going. If more wood was needed one didn t collect a log by hand. Rick Talbot would jump into the tractor with a bucket and collect a dead full grown tree and delicately place it in the middle of the fire. As we were to discover the whole weekend, nothing is done by halves at the Campsite. The gypsy wagons, carts and drays looked amazing. We also observed two stage coaches and a wagon that looked like it belonged on a wagon train heading West in the USA. It turns out that this wagon was amazingly restored by Jake Wiltshire. What a refreshing young man and like all the Wiltshires amazingly talented but also modest. Mathy and I always enjoy being in the company of the Wiltshire families and Rick Talbot. They have the ability to make you feel welcome and nothing seems to big an effort. More importantly the stories they tell and the things they know about the big horses is just so interesting. I keep telling Mathy I was born in the wrong era. She always agrees with me. But I m not sure if it is for the same reasons as mine!!! After spending sometime meeting people and appreciating the incredibly amazing set up at Moora for the big muster on Sunday we drove back to Rushworth. In keeping with the serenity of the place, (Ah the serenity, sounds familiar right!) we saw a mob of kangaroos at sunset, saw the smoke rising from campfire and the horses neighing as they received their much awaited hay. We had dinner at one of the local hotels in Rushworth. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The meal was delicious. Fish of course was the meal as it was Good Friday. The first day had been eventful. The thought of staying at the caravan park was something we were not looking forward too. Bring on Saturday morning. We survived our first night in the caravan park. We discovered that there were many people living in the park permanently. Our stay was only temporary; there were a lot of pensioners and other marginalised groups of our community staying there permanently. They appeared to have little or no option but to stay. At least we had a choice. 28

The Rushworth Market on Easter Saturday morning was a hive of activity. Fresh produce, home made cooking sensations together with bric a brac, antiques and entertainment were on offer. We both admired how small communities such as Rushworth bring out the best in people and rally around to have such a family friendly time. We sampled many home baked goodies and bought some home made jams and sauces to take home with us. Good strategic move on our behalf as they were top quality and very reasonably priced. The street procession / parade in Rushworth was stunning and inspiring. The crowd was upward of Children and their parents lined the Main Street, clapping and cheering as the impressively big and majestic horses pulled vehicles of all descriptions. It felt like we had stepped back in time. The crowd clearly appreciated the visual spectacle of a generation long since past. It was a rare opportunity to witness such a gathering of big horse and vehicles. I had the remarkable privilege of sitting in the eight horse team wagon driven masterfully by Rick Talbot during the procession. Noel Wiltshire (an incredibly talented all round horsemen) and a team of helpers provided their skill, expertise and back up support to Rick and the numerous other horse vehicles and wagons parading. I can only describe the feeling as exhilarating. What an amazing opportunity to firstly see such majestic Clydesdales and heavy draught horses in such large numbers, particularly in a street parade in the township of Rushworth. I am really thankful to both Rick and Noel for the ride. Believe me, take the opportunity come to Rushworth next year and bring your children or grand children to see and reflect on the way things used to be when heavy horses such as the Clydesdale dominated the land and our way of life. Congratulations Rushworth you left us speechless and in awe. After the parade many horses were trucked back to their camp site at Moora. Others made their way back pulling their carts and Gypsy wagons. There was much talk and discussion back at the community campsite. All of the campers and we blow ins contributed to a evening feast sitting by Rick Talbot s not so inconspicuous campfire. The day s happenings at the parade were dissected and examined. The writer of this article got to hear about how the Moora Muster came about and heard what makes it so unique. 29

The only disappointing aspect of the whole day was that Mathy and I, together with our dogs needed to spend yet another night at the dreaded caravan park. Mathy and I have been fortunate to have travelled around world and experience many good and bad things. But nothing had prepared us for this most unfortunate caravan park. On arrival back at the caravan we decided enough was enough, in the morning we would pack up and leave. This we did. Tempted not to pay our bill, but we did. We looked forward to the Moora Muster that morning. After the Muster was over we headed straight home. The Moora working draught horse muster had approximately 2000 people at the Reserve on Easter Sunday. Moora is located 7km west of Rushworth. It would have to be close to Australia s biggest working draught horse event in Australia. On several occasions I attempted to count all the horses but there was just too much action happening. The Moora event has been capably put together by The Goulburn Valley Arabian Horse Club over the years. Marilyn (Maz) Thomas, Max Seamer, Raymond and many others are responsible for putting this all together. As you all know, Max Seamer passed away recently. He is sadly missed, but what a wonderful legacy he has left behind. Of course there are many other people responsible for the big day: Peter Horgan, Noel Wiltshire and Rick Talbot and their league of helpers have set up a wonderful venue. It takes weeks to prepare the grounds and install the holding yards and stalls for the horses attending. It also takes along time to clean up and remove everything after the event. The writer is in admiration of their hard work, their 30

dedication, tireless commitment and there amazing resilience. Their can do attitude together with a never ending aussie dry sense of humour overcame many obstacles that most people and committees would baulk at. During the course of the day there were many riveting attractions: There were opportunities for all to have a go at long reining. Shearing of sheep the old fashion way. A blacksmith demonstrated his endless skills, such as making horse shoes and putting them on the heavy horses. Ploughing the paddocks with two, four and six teams of horses. A demonstration of collecting the cut hay, how it was stacked and loaded into the dray. In the early days stage coaches would stop regularly at the Moora Way station to refresh their horse and give the passengers a chance to stretch their legs while on their long journey. Unfortunately on Easter Sunday at Moora the stage coach was chased down and held up by unforgiving and notorious bushrangers. The writer did note that the stage came perilously close to a serious accident (real) and hope that the organisers review their safety and occupational safety requirements. Sorry about this spoiler alert everyone but luck prevailed where as it could have gone so seriously wrong. Phew! The Muster more than lived up to its reputation. We plan to go back next year and we will camp in our old horse truck and take the dogs again. It was also extremely pleasing to see the Vic CCHS stall capably overseen yet again by Thelma and Rob Ronzio. The stall was kept busy all day as the public purchased souvenirs of the big horses. 31

John and Courtney Mullenger representing the Victorian Tradesman and Delivery Horse Group were manning a stall as well and they reported a lot of interest in their membership. They reported a positive day. Of course who can resist visiting Noel and Anya s Wiltshire s stall with all the magnificent new harness and myriads of interesting items both from the USA and Australia. Mathy and I always find a little extra cash to purchase something from their. Talk about to big kids in a candy store. In the mid to late afternoon the frenzy of the crowd and the activities started to slow down so we and the dogs made our way to the car for the return trip home on the Mornington Peninsula. Yes we had a great time and we recommend that if you can please attend next Easter in Before finishing this report it is important to reflect on two things. Yes Katherine we were truly amazed perhaps even gob smacked. Secondly I would like to quote the words of Maz Thomas. You have to come to the Moora working Draught horse Muster and see them for yourselves!!!! Who can resist them!!!! Of course meaning the big horses. I think we all would agree. Cheers Ron. 32
