An overnight program designed to give 4-Hers the chance to learn about horses, share their existing horse knowledge, learn new skills, and share ideas with other horse-crazy Maryland 4-Hers and adults. Who can participate? ALL Maryland 4-Hers ages 8-18 (as of January 1, 2016) who love or want to learn about horses! You do NOT have to be enrolled in the horse & pony project to come to Jamboree! When and where is the Horse Jamboree held? The 2016 Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree will be held July 6-8, 2016 at the Queen Anne s County 4-H Park, 100 Dulin Clark Road, Centreville, MD What kinds of activities will there be at the Horse Jamboree? The focus of 4-H Horse Jamboree is learning and FUN! Highlights of the Jamboree include workshops about equine topics, horsey crafts, Zumba, a pizza party, a campfire hangout, and an in-hand Pony Show! 4-Hers can practice and showcase their horse skills in several different contests: the Horsemanship (skillathon) Contest, Model Horse Show, Arts & Crafts Contest, and a Dirty Pony contest. The State 4-H Horse Communications Contest will also be held during Horse Jamboree. See the attached schedule for details. Do I have to participate in the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest if I attend Horse Jamboree? No, the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest is a separate event that happens to be held during Horse Jamboree. If you don t want to participate you don t have to. If you DO want to participate, you must register for the Communications Contest separately. I want to compete in the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest, but I don t want to/can t attend Horse Jamboree. What should I do? You don t have to participate in Horse Jamboree to compete in the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest. They are separate events. Register for the Communications Contest through 4-H Online, then attend the contest on Thursday, July 7, Parents/spectators are welcome. There is a $5.00 entry fee for the Horse Communications Contest. You may also order lunch for yourself and your guests for an additional $5.00 per person. University of Maryland Extension programs are open to all and will not discriminate against anyone because of race, age, sex, color, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, religion, ancestry or national origin, marital status, genetic information, political affiliation, or gender identity and expression.
2 How do I register for the Horsemanship Contest, Arts & Crafts Contest, and Model Horse Show? When you register for Horse Jamboree in 4-H Online, check the appropriate boxes. You do not have to pre-register for specific classes for the Arts & Crafts contest or Model Horse Show. Read the contest rules and bring your entries to Jamboree. You will enter your items in appropriate classes on the contest/show day. How much does Horse Jamboree cost? The registration fee is $45.00 per participant (youth and adults) for the full Jamboree. A one-day, $10.00 registration is available for 4-Hers/adults who want to attend ONLY Thursday, July 7 (no sleep-over). What does the registration fee cover? Registration covers 2 nights lodging at the 4-H Park, all scheduled meals and snacks, and workshop supplies. It does NOT cover registration for the State 4-H Horse Communications Contest. 4-Hers must register separately for that contest and pay a $5.00 entry fee. Where will 4-Hers be sleeping? 4-Hers and chaperones will sleep in the indoor exhibit building at the Queen Anne s 4-H Park. BEDS ARE NOT PROVIDED; participants should bring air mattresses, cots, etc and bedding. Boys and girls will be housed in separate areas with chaperones of the same gender. Showers are available. Where & what will we eat? Meals will be provided by a local caterer, at the 4-H Park. I have food allergies or special dietary needs. Will there be food I can eat? Yes. You will be asked to list any food allergies and special dietary needs when you register for Horse Jamboree, then to provide details on the Event Health Form. The staff will work with you to provide for your special needs. Can I bring or buy snacks? You are welcome to bring snacks and drinks, but be mindful that others may have allergies. 3 Do I need a Chaperone? Yes. Each county must provide adult chaperones based on the number of youth attending from their county (1 adult chaperone for 1-10 youth; 2 chaperones for youth, etc). You should contact your 4-H Club Leader or County 4-H Office to find out who your county s adult chaperone(s) will be. You will need your Chaperone s name to register for 4-H Horse Jamboree. Who can serve as an Adult Chaperone? Due to University of Maryland and 4-H policies regarding adult supervision of youth programs, ONLY active, approved UME Volunteers or UME/4-H employees may serve as Adult Chaperones for Maryland 4-H events. Approved UME Volunteers must be certified and active in 4-H Online. I want to be an Adult Chaperone but I m not a UME Volunteer. Can I get certified so I can attend Horse Jamboree with my 4-Her? Yes! Contact your county 4-H Office ASAP to complete the UME Volunteer certification process. You will need to complete an application, provide references, and be interviewed. Once you are an approved UME Volunteer you can register as an Adult Chaperone for Maryland 4-H events. NOTE: The interview & approval process can take a couple weeks, so start NOW to be certified before registration closes! If I serve as an Adult Chaperone, what will my duties be? First and foremost you will be responsible for the 4-Hers you are designated to chaperone. You should know where your 4-Hers are at all times, encourage them to actively participate in Jamboree activities, and ensure they observe the Maryland 4-H Behavior Expectations. As a Chaperone you agree to not only help with your own child and county, but to assist with all Horse Jamboree activities as assigned or needed including workshops, contests, meals, and recreation. You will be required to remain at the Queen Anne s County 4-H Park for the duration of the Horse Jamboree or as long as the youth you are responsible for remain at the event. How do I register for Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree? You must register for Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree via the 4-H Online system. Log into your family profile and look for the link and information on the homepage, then follow the prompts. If you want a step-by-step tutorial, download the How to Register document from 4-H Online or the Maryland 4-H Website. Registration will open June 1, 2016 and close at 11:59 pm on June 24, How do I pay the registration fee? Can I do it online? Online payment is not available for Maryland 4-H Horse Jamboree. When you register via 4-H Online you will need to download and complete several forms, then mail the original, signed forms to the State 4-H Office. One of those forms is a payment form. You may pay by check or money order payable to the Maryland 4-H Foundation, or you may complete the Credit Card authorization portion of the form and charge the fee to your account. Help! I can t access my 4-H Online profile, or my status is not active. Contact your county 4-H Office for assistance with 4-H Online. They can help you with accessing and understanding your 4-H Online profile, and can help you make any necessary changes. University of Maryland Extension programs are open to all and will not discriminate against anyone because of race, age, sex, color, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, religion, ancestry or national origin, marital status, genetic information, political affiliation, or gender identity and expression.
