3 FOAL PATROL: Follows the journey of in-foal mares Continued from Page 1 tablets and smart phones. We are delighted to be the first to offer this one-of-akind program that will build new fans and strengthen insights for racing enthusiasts, said Cathy Marino, the Museum's director. We are so thankful for the creative mind and generous heart of our president, John Hendrickson, who brought the Museum this opportunity. In addition to creating the concept of Foal Patrol, Mr. Hendrickson and his wife, renowned philanthropist and thoroughbred owner Marylou Whitney, are underwriting most of the project. I am thrilled that Foal Patrol has become a reality. New fans, racing enthusiasts and young people will have their own virtual stable at their fingertips, Hendrickson said. They will get to know these magnificent athletes up close and personal and be an integral part of their lives through foaling and far beyond. One of my most-appreciated experiences is to be at Whitney Farm in Kentucky witnessing the foaling process. I truly believe, once you see a foal born, you will never be the same. I want everyone to feel ownership in this wonderful sport, with the magnificent beauty and tranquility of the farms as the backdrop. Foal Patrol will enable everyone to have unprecedented insight into a thoroughbred s life and allow the followers to learn while having fun. Foal Patrol has kicked off with five mares: Sabbatical at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky. (who delivered the first foal of Foal Patrol on Jan. 19); Stopchargingmaria at Three Chimneys Farm in Versailles, Ky. (in foal to Pioneerof the Nile with an expected foaling date of Feb. 2, 2018); Centre Court at Shawnee Farm in Harrodsburg, Ky. (in foal to Medaglia d Oro with an expected foaling date of Feb. 19, 2018); La Verdad at Edition Farm in Hyde Park, N.Y. (in foal to Tapit with an expected foaling date of March 15, 2018); and Memento d Oro at Old Tavern Farm in Saratoga Springs (in foal to Bodemeister with an expected foaling date of March 31, 2018). Three additional mares are scheduled to be added to the Foal Patrol roster in March 2018: Via Veneto at Double Diamond Farm in Ocala, Fla. (in foal to Bodemeister with an expected foaling date of April 25, 2018); Bird Town at Gainesway Farm in Lexington, Ky. (in foal to Empire Photo by Kathy Landman La Verdad, shown with owner Sheila Rosenblum, is one of the mares of Foal Patrol. Bred to Tapit, La Verdad is expeted to foal around March 15. Maker with an expected foaling date of April 26, 2018); and Arravale at Chanteclair Farm in Versailles, Ky. (in foal to American Pharoah with an expected foaling date of May 24, 2018). Foal Patrol will provide viewers with unprecedented access to what daily life for a mare in foal is like. Each individual mare page will feature updates on the horse and extensive educational content, including information on breeding, nutrition, information about the stallion the mare was bred to and fun facts. There are also comprehensive background info of each mare that includes Her racing history, video and image galleries. Regular blogging, video content and audio interviews will keep fans of the horses updated on daily activities. Following the foaling, there will be updates on the development of the foal. Fans following Foal Patrol can sign up for various contests, including opportunities to name some of the foals once they are born. There will be several prize packages announced throughout the duration of Foal Patrol that will feature unique racing experience packages. Whitney and Hendrickson have donated their box seats for the 2018 Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks as the grand prize. The box seats six and is located at the finish line at Churchill Downs. Page 3
4 AWARD: Veitch, Whitaker, Nagler honored Continued from Page 1 nominating committee of the Thoroughbred Division of the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Veitch has also done work for the Breeders Cup, producing the media guide for the 1985 edition at Aqueduct. Michael is the epitome of the dedicated professional journalist, and that dedication is matched by his devotion to what he believes is best for thoroughbred racing, said Edward L. Bowen, chairman of the Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor Selection Committee. His obvious enjoyment of the game is appealing, and contagious. Whitaker, a Philadelphia native and graduate of Saint Joseph s University, began his broadcasting career in radio before entering network television sports at CBS in Along with his distinguished coverage of the Triple Crown races, Whitaker is known for his reporting and commentary on golf s annual four major championships and was a studio host for NFL Today. Whitaker moved to ABC in 1982 and served the network as a reporter for both news and sports. A three-time Emmy Award winner, Whitaker also won an Eclipse Award for National Television Achievement in He received the Maryland Jockey Club s Old Hilltop Award for outstanding coverage of thoroughbred racing in 1983 and was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in In 2013, Whitaker was presented the Jim McKay Award for excellence in broadcasting by the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters. Whitaker was portrayed in the 2007 ESPN film Ruffian, which was based upon the ill-fated match race between Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure at Belmont Park. When Ruffian broke down in the race, Whitaker said: A false step here and the years of planning and breeding and training and loving came to an end. A horse with the speed and stamina and heart a horse, like the Bible says, whose neck is clothed in thunder. I often think of Jack Whitaker as a poet, said Bowen. His ability to summarize a situation in a way that is both informative and highly moving is a special gift I admire very much. Nagler ( ), a New York City native and graduate of New York University, wrote a newspaper column devoted mainly to thoroughbred racing and boxing for almost 40 years. Nagler began writing for The Morning Telegraph in In 1972, when The Morning Telegraph ceased publication, Nagler's On Second Thought column moved to its sister publication, Daily Racing Form. Before joining The Morning Telegraph, Nagler worked as a radio writer for the Colgate Sports Newsreel. He also worked in the 1950s and 1960s as a television producer of sports events on NBC and ABC, including segments for Wide World of Sports, the Olympic Winter Games of 1964 and the Grand National Steeplechase at Aintree, England. In 1978, Nagler received the Walter Haight Award for excellence in reporting on thoroughbred racing from the National Turf Writers Association. Nagler authored several books, including the racing titles The American Horse and Shoemaker, America s Greatest Jockey. ASK THE HISTORIAN BY ALLAN CARTER Q. What is the true story behind the death of Hall of Fame racehorse Old Rosebud? A. The story of the demise of Old Rosebud, the winner of the 1914 Kentucky Derby and a 1968 inductee into the Hall of Fame, is a perfect example of an erroneous account which was repeated so many times that it became a generally accepted fact. The false story of Old Rosebud s death was that on May 17, 1922 he was entered in a cheap claiming race at Jamaica Race Track. Entering the homestretch he took a bad step, broke down and was destroyed on the track. The first bone of contention is whether the race was a claiming or allowance event. Daily Racing Form labled the race an allowance event, while the New York Times and the Morning Telegraph described it as a claiming event. Until an actual program of the race is found, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame is tentatively listing it as a claiming event. The biggest mistake was stating that during that race Old Rosebud broke down and had to be destroyed on the track. Although the chart for the race stated that Old Rosebud quit badly in the stretch, to paraphrase Mark Twain, the reports of Old Rosebud s death were greatly exaggerated. In fact, six days after his race at Jamaica he broke down badly while exercising at that same track and had to be humanely destroyed. Page 4
5 CURATOR S CORNER BY VICTORIA REISMAN Cavalcade Martin Stainforth (British, ) Oil on canvas Gift: Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloane As January ushers in the start of 2018, so begins a new year of exhibitions at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Our first new exhibition of the year debuts this month in the Link Gallery with a display of works by Martin Stainforth from the Museum Collection. Born in England, Stainforth began his career as a wood engraver. He later turned to illustration and began studying and sketching animals while visiting a relative in rural Australia. Stainforth settled in Sydney and took an interest in the thoroughbred racing scene at Royal Randwick in He received his first horse portraiture commissions soon after, creating portraits for private owners and Australian racing organizations. Stainforth quickly gained a reputation for his ability to capture the lifelike detail and personality of his equine subjects and continued to paint some of the era s top racehorses as he moved to the United States in the mid-1920s before returning home to England in The Museum is fortunate to have 13 works by Stainforth within our collection, including four paintings currently out on a recurring loan to the City of Bowie Museums in Maryland for exhibition at the Belair Mansion. Among the paintings that remain on-site at the Museum, several represent members of our Hall of Fame, including Isabel Dodge Sloane s Cavalcade. Foaled in 1931 and purchased as a yearling by Mrs. Sloane, Cavalcade showed early promise under the guidance of Hall of Famer Robert A. Smith and never finished worse than fourth in 11 starts at 2 for his owner s Brookmeade Stable (finishing in the money in eight of those starts). His career took off in his 3-year-old season as he secured victory in the 1934 Kentucky Derby in his third-straight win. Triple Crown glory remained out of reach when Cavalcade lost the Preakness by a nose to stablemate High Quest, but he still managed to defeat fellow future Hall of Fame member and rival Discovery in that race and each subsequent victory at 3. Cavalcade went on to win the American Derby, Detroit Derby and Arlington Classic, earning the honor of being named the 1934 champion 3-year-old and Horse of the Year. A hoof ailment put an early end to his 3-year-old season, and he was never quite the same when he returned to the races at 4 and 5. Even though her star colt s racing career had come to an end, Mrs. Sloane s role as one of the trailblazing women in the sport of thoroughbred racing was just getting started. Competing with horses in both flat races and steeplechasing events, Mrs. Sloane s Brookmeade Stable won its first race in 1924, the first year her stable appeared on the leading American owners list as one of the 462 owners to win $5,000 or more. Her success with Cavalcade and others propelled her to the top of this list in 1934, making her the first woman to earn this distinction. Other career standouts from Brookmeade Stable include fellow Hall of Fame members Sword Dancer (winner of the 1959 Belmont, Hall of Fame Class of 1977) and Bowl of Flowers (1960 Champion 2-year-old Filly, 1961 Champion 3-year-old Filly, Hall of Fame Class of 2004). We look forward to exploring more of Mrs. Sloane s story and her contribution to the sport of thoroughbred racing in America as we continue to research and develop our next major special exhibition, Women in Racing. Cavalcade entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of If you have a story to share about a trailblazing woman involved in the sport of thoroughbred racing in America, please let us know! We re working on some exciting projects here at the National Museum of Racing, and we d love to hear from you. Please nmrcollections@racingmuseum.net to share your story and help us highlight the achievements of the pioneers of the sport, like Isabel Dodge Sloane mentioned above, who paved the way for future generations of women in racing.
