3 A message from your President Financial Statement as of April 30, 2013 They say there is no rest for the wicked, the same can be said for the Missouri archer. No sooner does indoor season wind down and outdoor begins. Missouri's indoor season wrapped up with the State Youth tournament. Once again we had several locations participate. Thanks to all who hosted and competed. The South Dakota Classic also had a nice showing from Missouri. It was held indoors this year for the first time. I'm sure everyone preferred shooting without the wind to contend with. It was nice to see several Championship Flight finishers from Missouri. MBH also had members attending the NFAA shoot in Redding, CA. I have heard this is a great shoot, with lots of different terrain than we are used to here in Missouri. 3D is also going strong. On any given Sunday you can find one within a reasonable driving distance anywhere in the state. There are a couple of upcoming MBH events this summer. They are the Sate Outdoor on July 13 & 14 in Blue Springs, MO. This shoot is hosted by Independence Bow Hunters. It is a two day field shoot. If you have never tried field archery before this is a great shoot to attend. Also in July will be the State 3D on July 27 & 28. This will be in Carrolton, MO and is hosted by Carroll County Bow Hunters. Registration for both of these shoots can be found on the MBH website or with the mail in form included in the Release. I would like to congratulate Cole Duensing on receiving the NFAA Dave Gordon Scholarship for archery. Way to go Cole! See everyone outdoors. 4 Oh man, it has been a busy last couple weeks, but it s been a great time! At the end of April, I was informed that I was chosen for the Dave Gordon Scholarship from the NFAA. This is a great honor and I greatly appreciate the opportunity to represent the NFAA in the continuation of my education. I would like to start by saying thank you to all NFAA members, everyone in the NFAA leadership, everyone who has helped me along the way, and God who has blessed with this scholarship. Also, Dad and I went to the ASA Paris Pro Am in Paris, Texas. It was a fantastic time! The weather turned out to be very nice with temperatures topping out between 75 and 80 degrees all weekend. I saw quite a few familiar faces down there over the weekend, many of whom were MBH members. The fellowship with the other shooters was great. It s always a great time when everyone is a good sport and just enjoys the environment of a proam. The courses were fairly challenging with the leaves much more advanced than here in Missouri. The range was laid out very well with easy traveling from place to place. The Love Civic Center was the location for the vendors village creating a great environment to talk to people from nearly all your favorite gear manufacturers about new products they have released. On that note, I would highly recommend everyone to make it to a ASA Pro Am at some point in time. Not only is the shooting great, but there is plenty of good deals on all kinds of equipment and opportunities to try out equipment you have never had the opportunity to try. Another positive to a Pro Am is meeting with the pros and picking their brain about just nearly everything. I got to talk to a handful of pros in Texas and every one of them took the time to talk with me and answer my questions. Until next time, I ll had traveled to Louisville for the NASP Nationals that has upwards of 10,000 shooters registered. Yes, you read that right! 10,000 shooters in one place is a whole lot of shooting going on! I ll make sure to get some pictures. LARGE AND SMALL GAME COMMITTEE Enjoy some pictures that my Dad took in Paris! Aim Small and God Bless Cole Duensing Man it s been a tough Turkey season for me so far. The weather has not cooperated for me to this point. The cold wet weather makes hunting a challenge. I did have close calls on April 21 st, 26 th, 27 th, and 28 th but in all cases the birds would not commit to the decoys and they stayed out of my effective range of 30 yards or were screened by brush and I was unable to get a clear shot. I am trying to hunt from natural blinds this season. I know that a pop up blind is more effective but I really don t like sitting inside one of those. I just feel too confined and I don t like the amount of effort it takes to lug the house to a new location. I realize there could be a rather steep learning curve to getting a 20 yard shot from a natural blind but I think I ll stick with it this year to see if I can make it happen. I may be eating tag soup this spring in Missouri but my wife and I have a trip planned to Wyoming for Merriam Turkey the first week of May. I hope to get a harvest with my bow but I will be taking the shotgun along just in case. I ll let you know how it turned out next month. So far I have not received any harvest reports for the spring turkey season but I am hopeful you are all still out there hunting and I will see your success stories soon. 5 News From The Stump. By : Kathy Potter NFAA Director Missouri potter.mbh@cvalley.net Well, another competitive Indoor season is in the books!!!! Congrats to all of you that participated and /or supported somebody behind the scenes. Far too often, we fail to acknowledge those individuals that make personal sacrifices in order to support somebody else that s standing up on the line making the shots. For all of you out there THANKS You ARE appreciated!!! I would like to send a HUGE shout out to all the Missourians that made that long trip to Yankton, SD for the NFAA Nation Unmarked 3D and the Dakota Classic. I quickly scanned the results and saw a number of familiar names: Cameo Gerkin, Stan Harmon Jr. and John Carrell are all NATIONAL 3D CHAMPIONS! Kenny Martin took 2nd and Steve Gerkin took 3rd in their divisions. Special congratulations goes out to Jackie White for taking home the big check in the Senior division for the Dakota Classic AND taking 3rd place in Redding at the NFAA Marked 3D Nationals! I m pretty proud of Mr. Potter for taking 3rd in the Championship Freestyle Division at the Dakota Classic. It was great to see so many first time attendees from Missouri this year. Way to REPRESENT!! For a complete list of all the results from all there shoots, just go to Switching gears the Easton Foundation and NFAA award over $20,000 in scholarships every year. The largest scholarship awarded by the NFAA Scholarship committee is the Dave Gordon award. I m proud to report that this year s winner was none other than our own Cole Duensing! Many of you know Cole either from the articles he has written for the MBH RE- LEASE or as 3D/Spot competitor. What you might NOT know is that Cole is the president of the Campus Activities Board at the Clinton Campus of State Fair Community College as well as a Federal Work Study there. He is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Additionally, Cole is a certified USA Archery Instructor and coaches archery at Holy Rosary Catholic School in Clinton, Missouri. Congratulations, Cole you make us proud! Now it s time to get those marks and head out to your favorite 3D, Field or FITA shoot. I encourage everybody to check out the Calendar of Events and head to a course to support a MBH Club event. Those clubs are critical to the survival of our sport and they need and appreciate your support. God Bless! HERE WE GO!!! 3-D season is in full swing with our first shoot under our belt. We had a FABULOUS turn-out for our April 14 shoot with 159 participants!! The fact that archery turkey season opened the next day may have helped, but we do hope those who came had a good time (in spite of the blustery conditions) and will come see us again. A BIG THANK YOU to all who came to enjoy the day. Results are posted on our web site at Thank you also to our members who showed up Saturday to clear the range of winter debris, set targets and stakes and do general cleanup we are so blessed to have a good crew to help. Congratulations to our own Linda Parker who brought home a silver bowl in the SFBHFSL division at the National Indoor Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. Congratulations Cole Duensing for being awarded the Dave Gordon Scholarship from the NFAA. NODAHO BOW HUNTERS, INC. Our next shoot will be Mothers Day, May 12. Mothers shoot for free in tribute to this special day. In June, we are having a special Traditional Only shoot on Saturday, June 8. In addition to the regular shoot, we ll have games to play afterwards, so plan on staying. Sunday, June 9 will be our regular 3-D shoot for all classes. For those who shoot the Bowhunter class, we are doing something a little different this year if a person wins two times during the season, they will be asked to move to the Release class. This will prevent one person from dominating this class which is designed to be more of a hunting situation with the 35 yard maximum yardage and fixed pins. As always, feel free to contact any of our officers listed in the Club Directory with any suggestions or comments you may have it is you we want to please. 7 CONSERVATION COMMITTEE On March 29, 2013 I received an from the Conservation Federation of Missouri s Executive Director, Dave Murphy. He was informing me about and asking for help to stop a couple of pieces of legislation that were introduced on the last day of filing, by those who favor controlling the Missouri Department of Conservation to their own ends, in this case we believe it to be those sympathetic to or personally involved in the Captive Cervid Industry otherwise known as fenced deer hunting/breeding farms. The deer farmers and fenced hunting operations are worried that the MDC will put regulations into effect that will require better fences and disease prevention that will cost them money. The small minority of deer farms and fenced hunting operations are endangering the entire Missouri wild deer population by the introduction of Chronic Wasting Disease into the wild deer population. We cannot let the favoritism of a minority group rob the MDC of its authority to manage our HJR 36, sponsored by Representatives Caleb states wildlife and forests. Jones serving Cole, Cooper, Moniteau, and Boone counties and Todd Richardson serving The second piece of legislation called Butler and Dunklin counties, would require HB 962, sponsored by the same reprethe MDC to subject their regulations to resentatives would revise the definition view and approval of the Joint Committee on of livestock to include elk and cervids Administrative Rules. This legislation would obtained from a legal source and directly involve the general assembly imme- raised in confinement. I believe the diately to approve any regulation changes intentions are the same for this house the MDC wants to implement. It would tobill; to wrench the authority for deer tally undermine the constitutional authority from the MDC giving it to some other we citizens have given our conservation place where politics and favoritism agency. Talk about too many fingers in the can call the shots instead of conservapie! This legislation would totally muddy the tionists who have the expertise and waters and prevent the experts at the MDC the best interests of Missouri s wild from managing our forests, fish, and wildlife deer as their first priority. properly. We as sportsman and hunters cannot stand idly by while a few try to force their will and selfish objectives on all of us! So speak up!
