1 Highland Wado Kai Kata Pinan Shodan Pinan means peaceful mind. The Pinan katas were composed in 1907 by Anko Itosu; who was 77 years old at the time. They are composed from the movements in Kushanku kata, a much larger kata. These katas were developed originally as beginners kata for use in Okinawan High School physical education programs in the first part of the century. 2 Pinan Shodan - The First Peaceful Mind Pinan Shodan is the first of the five Pinan kata which were selected from Kushanku kata. Pinan Shodan is a very basic simple kata at first but as the karateka practices the movements they will find the true meaning of the complexity of the kata. Pinan Shodan teaches the student stances, blocks, punching, striking, turning and different ways of body movement to produce rising, dropping and turning energy. Shizen hontai Zenkutsu dachi Kokutsu dachi Tettsui otoshi uke Gedan bari ude uke Jodan age ude uke Chudan jun zuki Osae teisho uke Nukite uchi Tome - Normal natural position - Forward stance - Back stance - Downward hammer fist block - Downward sweeping forearm block - High Rising forearm block - Middle lunge punch - Pressing palm block - Spear hand strike - Finish The most important things to master in this kata are reversing direction and leg movements.

3 The Movements of Pinan Shodan 1. In open foot attention stance, (musubi dachi) perform standing bow, (tachi rei). 2. Cross the hands in front of the body middle area, (chudan) fist closed, right over left. At the same time step with the left leg sideways into normal natural stance, (shizen hontai). This is YOI or preparation stage for kata. (Figure 1). 3. Look to the right (migi) and then to the left (hidari) rapidly to check the position of your opponent. 4. Step out to the left side with left leg into back stance with the heel slightly raised (hidari kokutsu dachi) perform a left hammer fist downward block ( hidari tettsui otoshi uke) * This stance can also be interpreted as a deep cat stance because of the lifting of the heel (Junzuki on Neko ashi dachi). (Figure 2) 5. Stepping forward with the right leg (migi) still to the left side (hidari) slide into right forward stance (Migi Zenkutsu dachi) and perform a right forward punch to the middle area (Migi chudan jun zuki). (Figure 3) 6. Looking over the left shoulder draw the right leg back pivoting to the right 180 degrees through right cat stance (migi neko ashi dachi). 7. Step out into right forward stance (Migi Zenkutsu dachi) perform a right downward sweeping forearm block (migi gedan otoshi bari ude uke). (Figure 4) 8. Draw the right leg back into a high natural T- stance position (migi shizen hontai) at the same time draw the right hand back and upward into right rising block position (migi jodan age uke waza).(figure 5). Bring the hand downward and perform a right middle downward hammer fist block (migi chudan tettsui otoshi uke). (Figure 6) 9. Step into left forward stance (Hidari Zenkutsu dachi) and perform a left forward punch to the middle area (Hidari chudan jun zuki). (Figure 7) 10. Looking over the left shoulder draw the left leg back pivoting through cat stance (Hidari neko ashi dachi) to the left and front facing 90 degrees. Page 34

4 11. Step forward with the left leg into left forward stance (hidari zenkutsu dachi) and perform a left sweeping downward block (hidari gedan otoshi bari ude uke). (Figure 8) 12. Step forward into right forward stance (migi zenkutsu dachi) and perform a right high rising forearm block (migi jodan age ude uke). (Figure 9) 13. Step forward into left forward stance (hidari zenkutsu dachi) and perform a left high rising forearm block (hidari jodan age ude uke). (Figure 10) 14. Step forward into right forward stance (migi zenkutsu dachi) and perform a right high rising forearm block (migi jodan age ude uke). At the same time as making the rising block (age uke) perform the karate yell - meeting of the spirit (Kiai) KIAI 15. Looking over the left shoulder pivot through cat stance ( hidari neko ashi dachi) turning left to the rear 225 degrees into left forward stance (hidari zenkutsu dachi) perform a left downward sweeping forearm block (hidari gedan otoshi bari ude uke) (Figure 12) 16. Step with the right leg into forward stance (migi zenkutsu dachi) still on the 45 degree rear facing angle. Perform right forward punch to the middle area (migi chudan jun zuki) (Figure 13) Page 35

5 17. Looking over the right shoulder draw the right leg back and pivot right through cat stance (migi neko ashi dachi) to the right side 90 degrees. 18. Step out into right forward stance (migi zenkutsu dachi) and perform a right downward sweeping forearm block (migi gedan otoshi bari ude uke) (Figure 14) 19. Stepping forward on the same degree angle into left forward stance (hidari zenkutsu dachi) perform a left middle area forward punch (hidari chudan jun zuki). (Figure 15) 20. Draw the left leg back into cat stance (neko ashi dachi) and pivot to the left 45 degrees rear facing. Step out into left forward stance (hidari zenkutsu dachi) perform a left downward sweeping forearm block (hidari gedan otoshi bari ude uke). (Figure 16) 21. Step into right forward stance (migi zenkutsu dachi) perform a right middle area forward punch (migi chudan jun zuki). (Figure 17) 22. 6 24. Open the right hand (migi te) with the palm facing the left side, stepping behind the right leg with the left, place the left hand on top of the right with the palm upward. 25. Perform a rear body full turn (Zabuki waza) pivoting around to the left facing the front position 225 degrees in left cat stance (hidari neko ashi dachi) at the same time the body pivots left into cat stance position perform a right hand pressing block with left hand on top of right with palm upward (migi osae otoshi teisho uke) (Figure 20) 26. Stepping out with the left leg into sumo stance (hidari shiko dachi) perform a left downward spear hand strike (hidari gedan otoshi kekomi nukite uchi) (Figure 21) 27. Stepping over the left leg with the right leg into cross over stance or X-stance (kagi dachi) (juji dachi) pivot the body completely around (sabaki waza) crossing the right hand palm up over the left spear hand (hidari nukite) into right sumo stance (migi shiko dachi) perform a right downward spear hand strike (migi gedan otoshi kekomi nukite uchi). (Figure 22) 28. Drawing the right leg back into right cat stance (migi neko ashi dachi) pivot the body to the right side facing 90 degrees. At the same time bring the right hand (migi te) over the left hand palm upward and perform a left pressing palm block (hidari osae otoshi teisho uke) (Figure 23) 29. Stepping out with the right leg into sumo stance (migi shiko dachi) perform a right downward spear hand strike (migi gedan otoshi kekomi nukite uchi) (Figure 24) 30. Stepping over the right leg with the left leg into cross over stance or X-stance (kagi dachi) (juji dacjo) pivot the body completely around (sabaki waza) crossing the left hand palm up over the right spear hand (migi nukite) into left sumo stance (hidari shiko dachi) perform a left downward spear hand strike (hidari gedan kekomi nukite uchi). While looking in the direction of the last strike draw the left leg back and be in front facing position in natural stance (shizen hontai) fists closed in front of body, then look to the front`. 7 Position 26 is the Yasumi - finish stage of the kata. pinan shodan/revised aug/96/barry lane *Notes of interest on Pinan Shodan (optional movement). 1. In movement 3 while moving into kokutsu dachi performing the tettsui otoshi the dropping into back stance, one adds acceleration to the downward blocking technique. 2. In movement 4 performing the jun zuki, the unwinding of the body from kokutsu dachi into zenkutsu dachi accelerates the jun zuki. 3. In movement 7 the downward block is accelerated by the forceful and fluid twisting of the hips and the dropping movement from the previous stance. 4. In movement 8 when in the normal natural stance position the rising block can be used to block an attempted strike or can be used to break loose from a grasping hold on the right wrist. The right hammer fist block is used in the second part of the block to stop a chudan attempted strike or can be used as a wrist lock technique to break a grasping hold. In this double blocking movement twisting the body to the right degrees in order to add more power to the tettsui. The feet however remain in shizen hontai and the knees bend into each other slightly to allow the upper portion of the body to turn with more power, while the feet remain stationary. The idea here is that you are blocking two consecutive punches from your opponent, one that is at the jodan level, and the second to the chudan level.
