2 Message from the Organiser Our 7 th emagazine to celebrate another successful Gold Coast Open. Due to the Commonwealth Games, we had to move the event to July. Still we had a total of 438 competitors participate at the 9 th Mooto Gold Coast Open. Once again our major sponsor Mooto provided all officials shirts for the event. International, national and state champions from all over the country were back again. This year we had 3 teams from Nepal, 1 from Solomon Island and 3 teams from New Zealand. We also sponsored a number of referees from interstate to assist in the event. I hope you enjoy this publication. Organised by Tan s the event has grown from a club championship to what it is today. The 1st Tans invitational championship was held in 1992 at the Southport High School. Sparring, Poomse and Jump kick competition were held similar to the format we have today. At the 7th Tans Open, New Zealand under the Taekwondo Union of New Zealand (TUNZ) entered for the first time. Various clubs and associations from NZ have returned every year since. In 2008, the event was expanded to 2 days as we could no longer fit the program into one. The Gold Coast Open In 2010, a name change was made to represent the expansion of the competition. The Gold Coast Open, also promoted the region where it has made its home and reputation. Every year we have clubs from all over Australia and internationally saw the expansion of electronics to all divisions except Yellow belt under 12 years. In 2017 we were the first event to use the new 120M Carrara Stadium. The Gold Coast Open is proud of its reputation which sees clubs returning each year. Taking care of the small details makes a big difference. The Gold Coast Open is always held in mid May to take advantage of the great weather Page 3

11 CLUB PROFILE Red Dragon Taekwondo was founded in 2002 and situated in Western Sydney. The main HQ is in Guildford. Branches in Merrylands, Seven Hills, Kellyville, Westmead and Castle Hill, Marayong, West Ryde and Kilmore (Vic). Our Club Motto is "Excellence through Inspiration, Dedication and Perspiration" Head Instructor - John Tsoutis Who is a 6th Dan kukkiwon Master has trained for over 31 years. Our Sparring team, coaches and supporters all look forward to competing in our first Gold Coast Open in Page 11

12 CLUB PROFILE - Titirangi Taekwondo Waitakere, New Zealand Established in 1990 by Mark Hall. Mark holds a 5th Dan Kukkiwon and has approximately 140 students. Mark participated in the early 2000 s under the TUNZ when our event was called the Tan s Open. Mark regularly takes teams to compete in regional and national tournaments and has coached numerous national Taekwondo champions. Mark was the trainer for the team representing New Zealand at the Junior World Championships in Vietnam in 2007 and coach at the Taekwondo World Champs in Puebla, Mexico in Page 12

Taya Taekwondo has continued to grow with grass roots development program in getting three of our athletes into the Australian National Team.

14 TAYA Taekwondo Established 2012 Head Instructor Natalia Sangalang Taya Taekwondo is a family-run and family oriented Taekwondo club located at the North West Sydney suburbs of Quakers Hill/Acacia Gardens. Our unique strength lies in the husband-wife-daughter team of Edwin, Natalia and Abby Sangalang who run the classes with their combined knowledge, experience and passion for Taekwondo. Taya Taekwondo has continued to grow with grass roots development program in getting three of our athletes into the Australian National Team. Head Instructor Natalia Sangalang was a member of the Philippine National Team back in the late 1980s-mid 1990s. Natalia has had various roles over the last 30 years of her involvement with Taekwondo from a retired elite athlete, coach, trainer, referee, poomsae judge and recently as Director/Board Member and Secretary/Treasurer for NSW Taekwondo (STNSW and ATNSW). Natalia is ably assisted by Edwin Sangalang who is an accredited tournament referee and Abby Sangalang who was an elite athlete/australian National Team Member Page 14
