P.O. Box 109, Calimesa, CA PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dennis Martinez Well, it looks like the holidays are fast approaching. It seems like they were just here, as the year has gone by so fast. Thankfully, it has been a pretty good year, but I still didn't get half the things done that I wanted to. Once we returned from the show in Brooks, Oregon, the Truckin' for Kids show was held in Irwindale. It was a hot day, but we had a good time looking at all of the trucks. There was quite a turnout of trucks, and we also had a good showing of trucks, with several members in attendance. Soon after that was the San Diego Chapter's show in Vista. This was their second show and they had a nice turnout of antique trucks. They also have a nice venue as it is located at the Antique Steam Tractor and Engines grounds. Therefore, there is plenty to see other than just trucks. If you've never been there you need to put it on your bucket list. Mark Christensen, Bruce Caballero and myself recently attended the Veterans Day Show at Flabob Airport in Rubidoux. This is a nice show which also has a little of everything; antique planes, tractors, cars, trucks, and engines. It was fun watching the antique planes flying over. 3 MESSAGE FROM CHAPTER EVENT COORDINATOR Ken Lund WEBSITE A big thank you! to Chris Caballero for volunteering to be our Web Master and newest board member. Check it southernca.aths.org. PAST EVENTS September 26-27, Irwindale, CA Truckin for Kids Show & Truck Drags The Truckin for Kids Truck Show and Drags was held Saturday, Sept. 26 and Sunday, Sept. 27. We had eight members and trucks in attendance on Sunday. It was very hot, so none of us felt like racing. We did have reasonable success with sales of 2014 & 2015 tee shirts. This year we sponsored two trophies. There is a possibility the raceway may close. We hope to attend next year wherever the event is located. October 17 Redlands, CA Home Depot Safety Day The So Cal Chapter brought out a few trucks for the Home Depot Safety Day. In addition to our trucks, there were local police and fire vehicles. The highlight was the landing of a Medi-vac helicopter. October 18, Vista, CA San Diego Chapter Truck Show The San Diego Chapter truck show was a success with 89 trucks in attendance. The Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum is a great venue (like ours at the railway museum.) where people can enjoy the trucks and the festivities of the museum on one of their special weekends. The People s Choice Award went to Dave Doll who is retiring his work truck after many years of service. The truck is a 1994 Peterbilt originally driven by Rob Reed, the owner of the company. It had a big sign on the front with the whole story of the truck. The President s Choice Award went to Todd Lemke for a 1966 GMC 4x4 Camper Special which had some neat innovations and wonderful workmanship. This is a must do event, and we look forward to attending next year. November 6, Yucaipa, CA Past Pleasures Car Club Cruise Night The last cruise night/car show of the season was held at the Yucaipa Valley Center. There were approximately 150 vehicles in attendance. It was also a toy drive for the local Fire Department, which collected six large boxes of toys and apx. $450. Lisa Martinez won a trophy for her 1959 Mack, that she lets Dennis Drive. FUTURE EVENTS December 6 - Long Beach Gunther s Yard annual gathering. In memory of George, his family has agreed to host ATHS-SCC, Long Beach Model T s, the local Harley club, WAPA and other groups for the annual Gunther s Yard open house. If you like to see old trucks, Harleys, hit-n-miss engines and lots of neat old rusty stuff you will have a great day. The planned hours will be 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Lunch should be the usual hot dogs and sodas available at a nominal charge. NOTE: The Gunther family collects non perishable food and toys for charity. Also, SoCal Chapter can use old parts for trophy tops. Please help by bringing something to the event. Location: 2380 Curry St., Long Beach --- Directions: From the 91 freeway, take Cherry exit. South on Cherry apx. 3/4 mi. Left on Cherry. Gunther s is at the end of the street on the right. Classic vehicles park inside gate, others on the street. 4 Mark Christensen s Big Adventure (Part I) I went on a trek with fellow club members Bill and Debby Leuer going to Hershey PA for the annual Antique Automobile Club of America swap meet and show held in October. We traveled there in Leigh Knudson s motorhome pulling an enclosed trailer with Leigh flying to meeting us there. On the way, we stopped in Brighton, CO fellow ATHS club member Don Chew s house to see his collection of four wheel drive vehicles. These included anything from an FWD Marmon Herrington truck to Porsche tractors! While we were there, we visited Ken Kafka the president of the Colorado chapter and his collection of 4WD Nash Quad and Coleman and a variety of other relics (Pierce, CO). After a couple days of visiting with them, we were on our way. We went to a couple of museums, a tractor pull and the American Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, IA. This is a substantial motorcycle museum! We went by the Iowa 80 Truck Stop Museum (but it was closed) and the Rock Island Armory Museum. The next stop was Le Claire, IA home of the American Pickers TV show. We stopped at their shop to see what they had and bought some t- shirts. On to Pennsylvania where we went to the All Mack Truck show in Lititz, PA. This show was held at Northwest Cranes where they rebuilt drag shovel cranes so there was a lot of cool rusty stuff to look at! After meeting up with Leigh, we went to Williams Grove Race track and watched the sprint car races. By this time we were at Hershey, PA and my wife Diane flew in to join us. The swap meet and show was a four day event of non-stop antique car, truck, petroliana, and beautifully restored antique vehicles. The weather held sunny except for one short rain shower toward the end of this show. Stay tuned the trip back will be recounted in the next newsletter! This is a requirement of our Southern California Chapter bylaws and National ATHS bylaws to maintain the non-profit 501 c (3) tax exempt status. There are two membership structures in ATHS. National dues of $45 ($55 family) are payable directly to ATHS National headquarters ( in Kansas City, Missouri on your anniversary date of joining ATHS. You are billed by them and will receive a subscription to Wheels of Time magazine. Southern California Chapter dues are $20 per calendar year and are due prior to March 1 of each year and includes bi-monthly issues of the Old Iron Express Newsletter. The Southern California Chapter Board hopes you feel you received something worthwhile out of your Chapter membership this past year and we encourage you to continue your membership for A 2015 near your name on the mailing label for the newsletter means your chapter membership dues are current through If 2015, 2016 or greater appears near your name, you have paid your membership through the end of the respective calendar year.
