1 OVERDRIVE Mar, 2004 Official Newsletter of the Vol2004 Iss 2 Central Indiana Austin Healey Club COLUMBUS, IN SITE OF CLASSIC FALL EVENT Special Reminders Next Meeting: Tues, Mar 16, Logan s Roadhouse, 4825 E 82th St, Indianapolis, , social at 6:30 pm Go-Karting: Sun, Mar 7, at Noon, Fastimes Indoor Karting, 96th & Keystone, (317) , IN Br Car Union Event All British Swap Meet: Sun, Feb 29, Wheaton, IL at the Du- Page Co Fairgrounds, 8 am 3 pm CIAHCA Insignia Banners Above: A Healey 3000 emerging from the early morning rally mist To paraphrase a famous quote, The world is a stage, but Indy is in the wings! Soon, nearby Columbus will take center stage as the third leg. On Oct 9-10, the 2004 Triple Crown Endurance Rally Series will conclude with the Abingdon Endurance Trials. Like the other two Series events, the Missouri Endurance Rally on Mar and the Grand Lake Tour (circumnavigating Lake Michigan) on Aug 12-13, the finale will consist of a 24-hour event of approximately miles. The winner is not determined on elapsed time, but for those who make each of the checkpoints in the alloted 24-hour period, on the shortest distance traveled! Thus, the ingredients needed to compete are not a triple set of finely-tuned Weber carbs attached to a competition engine, but a dependable pre-1981 British make car, personal perseverence and a dash of adventuresome spirit on behalf of you and your co-driver, and, perhaps, some map reading skills. Do any of you qualify? Although part of a series, entry in each of the events is not dependent on any of the other two. For more, see the website (click USA), the Abingdon coordinator Kim Tonry at KGROWLER@AOL.COM, or ask me for forms. It just might be the most fun you ve ever had in your Healey! Like to make a statement of Healey allegiance in your neighborhood or at your next party? Consider getting a beautiful 2 x 4 banner with our club insignia on white! Contact Jim Frakes to order. On Friday, Brent Porter and I took two trucks and trailers to rescue two Big Healeys from a Ft Wayne owner. He had a 60 Mk I since his father purchased it for him in 68 but had not driven it for about 14 years. Since he and wife are moving to New Mexico soon, the Healey had to go, along with an accompanying BN4 parts car. From there, we went on to Kendallville to view the progress on the red BN4 at Wicker s body shop. On viewing the sheet metal from the new parts car purchase, Wicker liked the newer shrouds better and some of the fenders also. The engine has been painted and is ready to drop in. It really looks great. Saturday was so nice, the BJ8 just begged for a short ride, and I was glad to accommodate. We know it is early in the year, and winter has not given up. But it felt good. Our first road trip of the year started at 7:00 am on Sunday to the DuPage, IL County Fairgrounds for a British Car Swap meet put on by the MG Club. Haskell, Frakes, Porter, Burck, Rice and Mann enjoyed the beautiful weather and a look at how some other Brit members do it. And, we found out it was mostly an MG club event. Very few Healey parts were there, but we did see several AH club members from the Midwest, Northern IN and even Minnesota. Of course, every trip would not be complete without a few items to bring back. Next weekend, the British Car Go Kart Challenge is on Sunday at the 96 th Street karting center. This has been an enjoyable event, and we urge all of you to attend and participate. Last year, we had some of the lady drivers join in the fun. So, come on out; spectators can also watch. Jim Secretary/Overdrive Roy Bowman 5851 N Central Ave Indianapolis, IN (317) ei_timo415@earthlink.net Right: All you had to do was just pullover and ask for directions! 3 CENTRAL INDIANA PAGE page 3 February Meeting Minutes Date and Place: Feb 17, 2004, at Logan s Road House Attendees: David Broyles, Bob Haskell, Craig & Sue Rice, Dick & Ruth Buis, Jim & Sandy Burck, Roy Bowman, Brent Porter, Dick Storrs, John Mann, Jim Frakes, Bruce Gilham, Don & Mary Goodrich, Lewis Jay After a social hour, Jim Frakes called us to order at about 7:35 pm. He and Bonnie were grateful to the members who attended their Daytona 500 party and who provided many delicious food items, contributing much to the success of the party. On the restoration front, Jim has transported his BN4 to Frank Wicker, who is also working on member Charlie Pike s BJ8. Lewis Jay will be having Nationwide do his. In addition, Jim talked briefly about Manns Jan 29th tech session, in which their 6-cylinder engine was briefly run. Lastly, he made note of the availability of CIAHCA banners for those interested. (See page 1 for more details.) Jan Meeting Minutes were approved as published in OVERDRIVE. Treasurer/Membership - Craig Rice reported that we to date have renewed about 90% of our membership. Calendar and Events Jim provided a review of the calendar events already in place. He indicated he planned to drive to the All British Swap Meet in Wheaton, IL and has room for one other rider. He asked for club activity ideas, and Brent Porter proposed a slot car event at Indy Slots in Beech Grove. The most likely time available would be early Sunday, the 21st or 28th of March, with the 21st preferable to those in attendance. Indy Fest 2004 We discussed a possible location and voted for the 2004 Indy Fest to be held in the Batesville area with the host hotel to be the nearby Hampton Inn. OVERDRIVE Roy Bowman, OVERDRIVE Publisher, received support for a proposal to begin sending the new issue to Bob Haskell for posting on his newly constructed website, as opposed to sending the actual files to everyone online. Instead, after it has been posted there by Bob, Roy will notify our online members that it is available for viewing and provide a link to it on the website. Next Meeting Place Our March meeting will again be at Logan s Roadhouse, 4825 E 82th, Indianapolis. We then adjourned at about 8:45 pm. Sprite Ads Left: Get away from it all! Right: That s my Pop. 4 From the activities... It Started!! page 4 Story and photos: Brent Porter It ain t a fit night out for Mann or beast to paraphrase W C Fields. Not too many people braved the treacherous weather the evening of Jan 29 to see a BN4 engine come to life at the home of John and Kathi Mann. We finished buttoning up their engine and tried to get her to breathe fire. With no initial success at starting, we began to trouble-shoot the problem. After several attempts, different people came to the conclusion that we had a dead ignition coil. That swapped, she roared to life for a few seconds, then nothing. Trying to start it again, we noticed that the starter motor would not turn over the engine. With some more head scratching, we found a nut had been sucked down into the combustion chamber. The general consensus was to remove the head and have it checked out at a machine shop. That has been done, and it is ready to go back together. More info about the engine assembly at a later time. Thanks to Jim Frakes, Jim Burck, Jon Monies, and Jim Switzer for attending, who, along with John and me, had a great time despite the weather. I would like to see our club have more tech sessions this year. They are always fun and informative, and sometimes, just sometimes, we get something fixed. The great food fare included hot beef stew and chili and other items brought by the guests. Race pool winners included Melanie Haskell who picked the first out of the race, Don Goodrich at the halfway point and most laps led, and Robyn Porter for the eventual winner, Dale Earnhardt, Jr!
