1 Jan/Feb 2012 A Good Start We kicked off our 2012 activities with a successful banquet held at New Jersey Motorsports Park in January, and celebrated honorees for the 2011 race official awards, Solo II, Rally, New Jersey Road Racing Series, TreadZone ProIT series, as well as our annual region and driver awards. We also celebrated a major milestone in the driving career of one of our long-time members. The 2012 calendar is shaping up very nicely indeed for our road racing activities at NJMP. We kick things off with a road racer s driver school March 31/April 1, and the Devil in the Dark 12-hour April 28 th. In addition to our full slate of National and Regional races, we have the bonus of seeing the TreadZone ProIT series run with Grand-Am in May. This is stacking up to be the best season ever for us and for NJMP. The 2012 Rally calendar is also available at and is printed inside this edition too. Details of our 2012 Solo II schedule will be forthcoming. Annual Tech for racecars will be available at the Driver School at the end of March, and we are also looking to set up a tech day a couple weeks prior in mid-march. Details will be sent via as soon as that date is set and location confirmed. Inside you will also see the results of just a couple of our community oriented activities. Holiday donations to Atlantic City for kids toys, and to Coats for Kids, are featured. This is only part of the outreach that we do in the course of our racing activities. Laps to Conquer M.S., and the Cystic Fibrosis foundation, also benefited from our 2011 fund raising activities. Jay Leno once quipped, We Americans like to be recognized for our anonymous acts of good will. Some have referred to us in the past as the Secret Car Club of America. Often times we do forget to remember and celebrate all the good we do for those around us while enjoying our sport. Some of you may have noticed in the Philadelphia Inquirer on December 23 rd an act of Christmas Spirit by member and driver Jim Boggs and the folks at Boggs Auto Collision Rebuilders in Woodbury. They rebuilt a salvaged car to present to a worthy working mother whose plight had come to their attention. Go to and type Boggs Auto into the search box to read more. Geoffrey Hall is in the final stages of publishing a book chronicling the TreadZone ProIT series through the lens of his camera. He had a preview copy to page through at the banquet, and it is a marvelous piece of work. Geoffrey will be letting us know via FaceBook, the ProIT Series website, and communication to the membership when the book is available for purchase. Without a doubt I ll be getting a copy it is a real keepsake packed with memories and showcasing the great series that ProIT has become. Last but not least, on a more somber note you ll read inside about the passing of John W. King, patriarch of the King family who are so much a part of our racing community. I remember fondly the father/son battles between he and JD King in Club Ford. I dug up an old picture of a post-race discussion JW and JD had after a race a Watkins Glen, which included an animated debate over the pass which allowed JW to get by JD en route to victory. Sadly the old picture is too grainy for publication here, but it brought back fond memories of JW s competitive fire and racing experience. Rest in peace, JW. See you all at NJMP in 2012, Your Humble Scribe, Tom Smith SJRAtSpeed@comcast.net

3 2011 Awards and Recognitions Across our programs Rally, Solo II, and road racing and among our disciplines officials, leaders, drivers there are many who do great things and some who deserve a special recognition for Regional Executive Award In recognition of his work to make the Rally program a success Jim Wakemen, Jr. Solo II Awards Driver of the Year Andre Downing Rookie of the Year Alex Cabinian Worker of the Year Bill Richter Race Official Awards Registrar Terri Zane Pit Dale Gogel Tech Matt Wojtkowiak, Sr Timing and Scoring Shirley Zane Emergency Services Ray Maliszewski Flagging and Communications Bruce Marshall Grid Louis Stavoli Start Pete Watson Race Driver Awards The Stevenson-Wood award is given when a driver delivers championship performance on track and also in leading our club. Brian Heun The Dave Rose Sportsman award is given when a driver is both fast on the track and quick to support competitors in the paddock. Don Colanero Our road racing Rookie of The Year had an epic first year, in the tradition of those before him, taking four wins in two classes and setting a new track record. Jason Rabe And our road racing Driver of The Year was NJRRS Champ, 4 th overall in the Treadzone ProIT series championship, battling it out weekend after weekend against some great teams and drivers and setting a goldstandard among our drivers for his preparation, speed, and results John Hainsworth Frank has bought and sold, prepared and driven some amazing and awesome machines over the years. His investment of time, passion, energy, and money in our sport over the years is staggering. Frank is a cornerstone of our community on the track, in the paddock, and in the classroom. With wife Tina alongside and leading the charge, Sanchez Motorsports shows us all, weekend after weekend, what racing, our sport, and our community are all about. So the sweet part is clearly celebrating Frank and Tina s presence among us, the sheer dedication and commitment that it takes to reach 40 years on track, and to continue to do so with such passion and success. The bitter part is earning the Hardship Driver award for Frank and Tina had a tough year mechanically in their exotic and elegant SPU Daytona. A former IMSA GTU car, the Daytona is a thing of beauty to see in the paddock and on the track. But for 2011, at times Frank and Tina must have felt as though they brought the car to the track so they could work on it amongst friends! Yet, they persevered and delivered results, in the face of stubborn motor / driveability issues. Never losing the optimism and faith, each session on track was a new chance for everything to click into place, or for the right answer to emerge. And with each session, they made the most of what the car was offering. For 2012, Frank and Tina have a new, special surprise for all of us to enjoy. I won t totally spoil the surprise here, except to say simply that they are now platinum members of the Jim Downing Frequent Buyer s club, and that a masterpiece from the legendary Downing stable awaits its first opportunity to taste the asphalt at NJMP. Endurance and Resilience Celebrating 40 Years in Competition We also award a Hardship Driver Award for someone who perseveres and races on in the face of obstacles. This year we have so much more to celebrate and recognize than would normally be the case. Yes, this can be a bittersweet recognition, but in the case of this year s honoree it is far more sweet than bitter. In the February issue of SportsCar magazine, in the listing of membership anniversaries, you may have noticed that Frank Sanchez has reached the 40-year milestone. What you may not realize is that Frank has been a driver and racer throughout all those 40 years! Frank s career has spanned many forms of racing with many sanctioning bodies. Yet, no matter what else Frank was doing, he maintained his SCCA road racing roots and participation. Year after year. For 40 years. Contemplate that for a moment! 20 years ago, or mid-way through his illustrious career, this is what Frank raced and we all enjoyed. Frank and Tina cannot wait for you to see what they have in store for 2012!
4 John W. King October 27, 1940 February 3, 2012 On February 3, 2012, John W. King took the checkered flag and set off to enjoy his victory lap, and to rest in peace. The patriarch of the King family who offer our club so much vitality, life, and leadership, he got his first taste of racing as a fan of Indy and Champ Car racing in the 1950 s. Following his education at Valley Forge Military Academy, Rutgers, and Drexel, he learned of our sports car races at Vineland and Marlboro through people he met in his early career. His first taste of driving and racing was in the early 1960 s. He befriended Jack Cattell and earned a drive in Jack s HP Austin Healey Sprite/MG Midget by working as crew for him. His jacket patches evoke history: 1963, 1964, and 1965 SJR 4 Hour. He continued to race into the early 1970 s at Vineland, Reading, Connellsville, and Marlboro, as well as Pocono. After taking a hiatus from competition he returned to the racing cockpit in the late 1980 s by renting a Spec Racer on several occasions, of which his favorite drive was at Hallett in Oklahoma. Wife Sue was with John from the start and began her SCCA journey in Timing and Scoring. Sue King is now a Steward, experienced in all specialties, experienced as a race driver, past Regional Executive, member of our Board, and secretary for our club. JW King purchased a Zink Z10 Club Ford in 1990 and a certain son JD King used it to obtain his competition license. JW got an RF78 Van Diemen, and the father/son racing rivalry was born. JD describes it modestly: We were fortunate to have raced against each other for several seasons, enjoying quite a bit of generational rivalry and all of the ribbing and cajoling that goes along with it. John and Sue, their children, grandchildren, and extended family are so much a part of our race weekends today, a legacy of his love for sport, racing and engineering. Rest in peace, big John On the grid at Marlboro JW back in the day thanks to JD for pic Along the way, a family s racing heritage began.
5 2012 Racing Schedule Promises to Offer Us Our Best Season Ever The 2012 schedule for South Jersey Region / Jersey Racing Board / Treadzone ProIT series events at New Jersey Motorsports Park is inspiring indeed. The March Lion Driver s School (March 31/April 1) is a double-school this year offered in a two-day format packed with lots of track time, practice starts and races. Students who successfully and satisfactorily complete the entire program receive credit for two schools in just one weekend. The school will be held on the Lightning circuit. Registration is open on DLBRacing.com. The Devil in the Dark 12-Hour Endurance Race (April 27/28) will take to Thunderbolt for the third running of this great event. Thanks to new more inclusive rules and classifications, we expect the largest field ever for this event, and as always NJMP provides a great infield atmosphere for this event which is incredibly challenging for the teams and family-friendly for fans. Registration is open on DLBRacing.com. The Treadzone ProIT Series will run as a support race for the big Grand-Am Weekend on May 12/13 with ProIT races on both days of this major professional race weekend. The Treadzone ProIT series is recognized as providing great close racing with large fields of cars. Running on this major professional weekend should provide the biggest, best ProIT event ever. The Jersey Devil National and Treadzone ProIT Series will return to Thunderbolt on June 2/3. The Lightning Challenge Regional and Treadzone ProIT Series will be on Lightning June 30/July 1. This is a very exciting race weekend at NJMP, because on Thunderbolt will be the ARCA race with Mike Rand s SCCA Pro F1600/F2000/FA series running in support. There will be a lot of cars, people, and excitement around NJMP on this pre-holiday weekend. Summer Thunder Regional and ProIT returns to Thunderbolt on August 18/19. And finally, our unique Jersey Road Racing Classic (JRRC, or simply The Jerk) will close out the season on Lightning October 20/21. Whether as a spectator, entrant, driver, crew, or race official, this season will absolutely be our best ever. As the late Davey Rose used to say, When it comes to racing, you re either on the bus or off the bus. Don t let it leave without you. Make your plans now, it s a great bus to be on Rally Program Schedule Announced and Event Descriptions Available 2012 SJR Road Rally Schedule Date of Event Type of Rally Event Name Starting Flyer Results 03/31/12 RC/RT March Lamb Road Rally Newark, DE Flyer 04/01/12 RC/RT March Lion Road Rally Pitman, NJ Flyer 04/29/12 RC/RT Spring Fling Road Rally Warminster, PA Flyer 05/20/12 RC/RT Going Places in Salem 2 Road Rally Pitman, NJ 09/30/12 RC/RT Stay to the Left, Stay to the Right 4 Road Rally Pitman, NJ Contact information for the March Lamb Rally is: Dave Teter teter@udel.edu Contact information for all other rallies: Jim Wakemen jwakemen43@aol.com
