1 North Hills Historic Auto Club August 2010 Visit us at Hi Everyone, I went on the all-day tour to various points in Ohio on July 13th, and we all seemed to have a great time. About 15 old cars were in attendance, and the rain held off until we were on our way home. In this issue: July Minutes 3 Member Profile 4 The tour season is in full swing, and we'd like to see the new members joining in on these activities. There are lots of tours still to come, and the club picnic is in September. This is a great way to have some fun and get to know each other. I'm looking forward to seeing you all soon. 3 NORTH HILLS HISTORIC AUTO CLUB MINUTES July 11, 2010 After the Pledge of Allegiance, President Jan Smith asked if there were any corrections or additions to the Minutes of June 13, There were none. Treasurer Jack Swaney reported that there was $4, in the account. Michael J. Quinn motioned to accept his report and Jennie Barker seconded. Frank Pribanic was not present and there was no illness report. In attendance were new members Russ Reiger, Ron Libengood and Lou Sebastian. Not in attendance were new members Patricia McKenty and Joe and Mary Ellen Gallagher. Old Business: Jack Swaney sent letters to the car show booklet advertisers and got all good responses. Jack Swaney then indicated that he did not need help with the Club Picnic being held on September 12, 2010 although he did need a reservation taker and Michael J. Quinn agreed to be that person. Mary Jo Phillips reserved the first Sunday in June at the Mars School for the next car show. There is no rain date. The Indian Lake car tour has been re-scheduled to August 22, New Business: Jan and Bonnie Smith are planning a tour to a glass blowing center and small car collection for September 26, Details to follow. Steve Illsley reported on the great luncheon tours that have been held. Jennie Barker took a first place at a car show in Moon Township on July 11, Pat O Neill also took a first place recently. The Grand Prix is coming up the end of this month. Jan Smith spoke about the renovation and construction of his newest vehicle. He and Bonnie brought pictures to share with the Club. 4 Member Profile Update By: Joe Acker Mike and Judy Coco This month I am pleased to revisit Mike Coco s garage. Mike and Judy have been members of the NHHAC for 19 years and have an elaborate collection of antique cars. Recently, Mike purchased another car which is very unique in that it is as close to an all original car as you can get. The first time I saw this 1939 Buick Special 40 Series 46C Convertible Coupe, was in June at the Starlite Cruise in Wexford. As I approached the car, I thought it had just come out of a paint shop, as 20 feet away the black paint looked stunning. When I stepped up next to the Buick, I noticed the black convertible top was somewhat faded and the red leather upholstery was well worn. This was a clue that the car was not a recent restoration. Then Mike appeared and told me this car was in all original condition. It turns out that Mike bought it from a family that had owned it since they purchased it new in The man who bought the car new went to war and sad to say, never returned. The car was left to a younger brother who also lived at home with other family members. He put most of the 39,000 miles on the car. Since he was never married, the Buick was his hobby of sorts and his main interest. Upon his death, the car was left to a sister who never drove the car! It never left her garage for about 15 years. In December of 2009, Mike purchased the 71 year old car in its original and somewhat exceptional condition. Fortunately, the sister s garage was attached to the house, with a concrete floor, so it was dry and clean. When Mike saw the car, there was no musty or mildew smell in the garage, which helped greatly in its preservation. This car is equipped with an in-line 8 cylinder engine with 117 horse power. It is a very heavy car weighing 3,800 pounds. It has a 3 speed stick shift mounted for the first time by Buick, on the steering column, as opposed to the shift stick on the floor. This was also the first year with no rumble seat, but two jump seats that fold down from the sides behind the front seats. This car did have directional signals, but only rear mounted on the center of the trunk lid, and no signals on the front of the car. If you have ever shown a car at a cruise or show, you know one of the most frequent questions asked by onlookers is, Where did you find this car? Mike told me that last year, Steve Illsley told him there was an original old Buick for sale in the area that he might be interested in. While waiting for Steve to get the particulars on this car, Mike just happened to see a 1939 Buick on the internet last fall. The ad said the car was in Wexford, Pa. and Mike found out the information he needed and tried to buy it. It took about 6 weeks to finally see the car and yes, it was the very same car that Steve had mentioned to Mike. To date, much time and expense has been expended to bring this Jewel back to roadworthy condition. Mike said the more the car is driven, the better it runs. He and Judy look forward to being the second family of long time owners, and to keeping this treasure on the road.

6 A Member's Review of the NHHAC Ohio Lunch Tour - July 13, By Bob Otto My wife, Diane, and I had the good sense to sign up for a delightful tour made possible by our intrepid leader, Steve Illsley. First, some statistics: There were 25 attendees and 15 cars in the caravan which began the journey from the Krispy Kreme Donut store in Cranberry. This tour was a bit unusual in that it was an all-day affair starting at 8 a.m. and extending into early evening. We passed through a number of quaint little eastern Ohio towns in the course of the tour. Our first port-of-call, beyond Unity, OH, was the Maxwell China plant. Here we were treated to a factory tour of the facility which occupies what was once an elementary school. Maxwell China does not manufacture china, but rather they take china made elsewhere and decorate it with appliqués that get kilnfired and become permanent parts of the china surface. Some pieces get painstaking hand decorating with precious metals and become beautiful art objects that are "high end" merchandise. Maxwell's work is done for contract clients and hey do not sell retail; however, they have a room set aside where they sell "factory seconds" at low prices. Our tour folks took advantage of the opportunity! Next on the agenda was a late breakfast/early lunch at a restaurant called Hecks. Following that we pressed forward to the charming town of Columbiana, where we stopped to visit antique stores. Passing Canfield, we arrived at a giant auto parts and tool emporium -- TP Supply -- where we were free to browse (and buy) to our heart's content. TP Supply is involved with car and truck restoration/ customization, and they have a separate building on the premises where they showcase about a dozen automotive works of art. Among these gems were a custom 1955 Pontiac Safari wagon, a 1957 Buick super hardtop, and a 1939 LaSalle convertible. So much rust.so little time. Jim Cutuli, Mike Coco and Jan Smith check out some one s future projects.. Further down the road we stopped for a gift shop visit (tribute to the ladies) where the usual knickknacks and "Christmas in July" offerings were in abundance. A bit beyond Deerfield, OH, there was Budd's Auto and Truck Salvage Yard. Here we were free to wander (the dog was chained) the premises and smile at rust bucket model T's and basket case 40's--60's specimens. Backtracking, there was dinner outside Deerfield at Ben's Restaurant. Wrapping up the tour, we made the traditional ice cream stopover. There was great fellowship. Thank you, Steve.
