1 Volume 45, Issue 9 Hovedstad Posten December 2018 New start time 6:30 PM Kjære venner, Board Meetings Third Tuesday of the Month at 5:30 Subway Cleveland Ave & North St All members are invited Regular Meetings September May 4th Monday each month at 6:30 PM Columbian Hall 6794 Martin Way E Olympia, WA Need directions? Have a question about an upcoming meeting or event? Contact Linda Fialkowski norwaydreamer@comcast.net Next Meeting January 28, :30 PM Fra Presidenten As we enter the Christmas holiday season, we can take a few moments to reflect on another eventful year for Hovedstad Lodge. In March we staffed a booth at the Ethnic Celebration at St Martins Pavilion and, in April we co-hosted the 12th Annual Norway Day. Our event continues to be a favorite event in our community; and our visitors really seem to like our food, vendors, demonstrations, music and spirit. As it turned out, this year was our best Norway Day to date. In May we celebrated our Syttende Mai at River s Edge with a wonderful dinner and program by District 2 Vice President, Jerry Erickson. In June we had a booth at the All s Faire festival. We experienced more interest in the Sons of Norway than expected and a good time was had by all. Once again, Tom and Sheryl hosted us for our summer picnic at their home Our picnic was catered by Dickeys Barbeque, and Dante and Eros Faulk entertained us with their fiddle and cello folk music. In November we took a bus trip to the Nordic Museum in Seattle. Many of us wanted to visit the museum but were not keen on driving. To the rescue, Bill Hegge stepped up to the plate and drove the bus. It seems he knew all the best ways to avoid traffic and still reach our destination in good time. Finally, last weekend we enjoyed our final event of the year our Julefest. What a wonderful afternoon we had with music by the JoySong Victorian Carolers, sampling of all the homemade goodies, sipping coffee, watching the Julenisse enchant the young ones and then playing lively games to end the day. Thanks to you, we collected a basket full of socks, gloves, hats and cash for the Olympia Union Gospel Mission to make the holidays a little better for the less fortunate. Thank you, Dan, for delivering all the donations. There are so many folks to thank for making the year so fun and successful. Mange tusen takk to all of you for your support. I am looking forward to next year and the new adventures and challenges that the new year will bring. John and I wish each and every one of you and your families peace and much happiness as we move forward into Jeg ønsker jeg dere alle en riktig God Jul og et Godt Nyttår! Joanne

3 Norwegian Christmas Brew - Juleøl Juleøl, Christmas beer, was first mentioned in the skaldic poem Hrafnsmál (Old Norse raven song ) around 900 AD: At sea the King will drink jol and resume Freya s game. Today Jul mens Christmas in Norwegian but the word originates from to drink jol. On the occasion of the annual winter feast, people were drinking strong beer to celebrate the sun s return and the Norse gods. In the beginning, jol was a pagan feast celebrated throughout Europe in December and January. At least three neighbors would gather and bring a certain amount of beer to the community where they drank in honor of Freya and Odin, for the sun to return, for good harvests and peace. Beer drinking had a central position in Håvamål, an Old Norse poem from the Viking age, describing specific drinking rules during the different feasts. It is written that when the beer enters, your mind goes out, but those who drink again regain their wits. The tradition of brewing beer was introduced by Olaf Tryggvason, King of Norway from AD. It is said that St. Martin of Tour came to Olaf in a dream and directed him to give the old pagan customs a Christian content. Around the year 1000, the winter solstice became a time when people brewed strong beer and drank to the glory of Christ and Mary: The stronger the beer, the greater the honor. He who made excellent brew was given high status. The beer should be brewed from the farm s best grain, and could be seasoned with juniper berries, sweet gale, and different herbs depending on what was available. The brewer was free to experiment and use new flavors to highlight personality or originality and each region had its own traditions. 4 Hovedstad Julefest 2018 A Nordic Christmas Wonderland Deep within the Norwegian mountains, the town of Røros, Norway, transforms into a magical Christmas market for one weekend, every year. The streets of Røros are lined with more than 60 market stalls, Christmas food and traditional activities. Drawing in hundreds of visitors, Røros offers a wonderful start to the Christmas season. Experience Røros by taking a romantic sleigh ride, exploring the nooks and crannies of the old copper mining town or warm up with some freshly made gløgg. This picturesque, Nordic town was the inspiration behind Disney s movie, Frozen. Kids can meet the beloved reindeer Sven, build snowmen or try tobogganing. Temperatures regularly dip below freezing, but the Christmas market thrives every year. This year s festivities will be taking place on December 6-9. To learn more about the Christmas market held in Røros, visit More about enchanting Røros can be found online in the November 2016 Viking. Log in at then access the Viking archive by clicking on the Norwegian Culture drop down menu on the homepage.

5 Dual Citizenship for Norway The government wants to let Norwegians belong to two countries. They want to give people the chance to have dual citizenship. Norwegians must be allowed to have passports from two countries. This is what the government wants. That is to say, people who live in a country outside Norway can have dual citizenship. "It will be possible for Norwegians to keep their Norwegian passports. They can do that even if they become nationals of another country. The same will apply to foreign citizens who wish to become Norwegian. We are open to dual citizenship. This ensures that Norwegian law follows developments around the world. Connections to other countries are ever increasing. So says Jan Tore Sanner in a message to the press. He is the Minister of Knowledge and Integration. All of the other Nordic countries have opened up for double citizenship. So have most of the countries in Europe. The rule today is that only Norwegians can have citizenship. But there are several exceptions to the rule. Many foreigners seeking to become Norwegians have received dual citizenship, while Norwegians who become citizens of another country have not had the same opportunity. The government's proposal makes it so people are treated more equally, says Sanner. Norwegian citizens can regain their citizenship with this proposal. That is, if they lost their Norwegian citizenship when they became citizens of another country. The government says that security is also an intention of the proposal. People convicted of terrorism may be deprived of their Norwegian citizenship. However, if they do not have dual citizenship, they can not be sent out of Norway. Are you working on your Genealogy? Need some help with New Ideas of Places to Search? Every Monday, join the Cultural Research Crew lead by David Olsen. From 1 3 PM, David and his team meet at the Washington State Library on Capitol Way and Israel Rd. They can help you get started or just give you some ideas for getting past that brick wall. Get your facts together to fill out the paperwork for your Cultural Skills Medals. Til Minne Kim Nesslequist Dec 5,1956- Dec 7, 2018 Kim was a PLU alum, a Regent & Advancement Officer, the Honorary Norwegian Consul and a great friend to all of our South Sound Norwegian groups. He will be missed!
