We have many good things to look forward to in the coming months and I am anxious to enjoy them with you. I offer my special tusen takk to the officers who served so faithfully last year and look forward to working with the new and returning officers this year. My thanks to Marvin Nelson, Past President of Vesterdalen Lodge, Auburn, for serving as the Installing Officer and to Ron McDonald and Jon Halvorson for assisting as Installing Marshals. Thanks, too, to Linda for making the yummy salmon chowder and accompaniments we enjoyed before the meeting. The Stoughton Norwegian Dancers from Stoughton, Wisconsin will be here in March. They will be performing in Seattle, McChord AFB and PLU. At this time, we are seeking a venue in Olympia for them to perform. These young students are extremely talented and their performance is an event you will not want to miss. More information as it becomes available. Sons of Norway International Convention 2016 offers us a new challenge this year. This is the first time three lodges have combined their efforts/talents to host an International Convention. It is very nice to work with so many experienced and talented lodge members. I think we all will do a terrific job, and I am pleased with the cooperation of our Lodge members in helping with the planning and implementation of the convention. It s not too soon to start looking at Scholarships. District 2 Youth Camp applications are to be postmarked not earlier than February 14 th and will be recorded in the order they are received. Applicants for camp must have a parent, grandparent or sponsor who is a member of District 2. Contact a Scholarship Committee member; Ken Olson, Linda Fialkowski or Nancy Hill for more information. The meeting was then suspended for a salmon chowder and salad dinner. Following the dinner, the Installation of Officers began. Marvin Nelson from Vesterdalen lodge in Auburn was the installing officer. Ron McDonald and Jon Halvorson were the installing marshals. The 2016 officers were installed. The meeting resumed after refreshments. Our guests were welcomed and introduced. They were Marti Brown, FBC for Sons of Norway; Quinn Balstad, President, Norden #2 Lodge, and Eric Balstad, Trollhaugen Board member. Linda Fialkowski presented Joanne with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of a Daughters of Norway and congratulating her as President. Quinn Balstad presented Joanne with a bouquet congratulating her as President. A silent roll call of Board members was taken. There were 15 Board Members present and 29 Lodge Members present: Motion was made to accept the Nov meeting minutes. MSP. Reports: Vice President Youth camp signups will begin February 14, The deadline for applications for the Hovedstad Scholarship will be the March meeting. Secretary Ski for Light, Inc. sent a letter thanking the Lodge for its donation, and we received a card from Judi Hambrick, the current President of Daughters of Norway, thanking the Lodge for the flowers. Treasurer The balance of the checking account was reported. Three people are needed for the audit committee. Jon Halvorson, Bill Hegge and Bob Dunn volunteered. Cultural Joanne was presented with a Level 1 medal for rosemalling. Social Jytta reported that she will put together a committee soon Sunshine Ellen is collecting stamps for TUBFRIM. So give any stamps you would like to her. Grace Faaren is moving to Olympics West. Janet Carlson is back home. Trustees A report was given on our Edward Jones investment account. Youth no report Sports Director Dave Olsen received a silver Gangmerke medal for walking. Elaine has bronze and silver medals on the way. Editor Linda is working on new membership directory. If there are any changes to be made please make sure to let her know. She also has the 2016 Hostess signup sheet. Marti Brown spoke about new additions to financial packages. Next month she will talk about how do you initiate conversations with people you know about life planning, what documents you should have, how to correctly title your assets and what to avoid. Old Business: Members were asked to submit the hours that need to be reported for New Business: June 1 is the District 2 convention in Idaho. Stoughton Norwegian Dancers will be in our area in March. We need housing for the students if they come to Olympia. We are looking for ideas for possible venues in the Olympia area for them to perform. Eric Balstad spoke about the District 2 cross country ski race at Trollhaugen on February 6. Also July 16 th is the steak fry/salmon dinner at Trollhaugen. Good of the order: There is a fun run and bike ride across the 520 bridge. April 2 is run, April 3 is bike ride. The next meeting will be February 22 nd at 7:00 pm at the Columbian Hall. 3 NORWAY DAY APRIL 16th Norway Day will be April 16 th so mark your calendars. Our plans are well underway for the 10 th annual event this year and this promises to be one of our best years. Booster buttons are now available from any lodge officer for just $10. Let s see how many boosters we can get. Cookie bakers are always needed as the Bake Sale sells out very quickly. We never seem to have enough goodies. A lot of the visitors make the Bake Sale their first stop. Maybe our Norwegian Waffle station will be their second stop right along with a complimentary cup of coffee. Invite your friends and mark your calendars!

4 Cardamom s the Word In case you were wondering what gives your Chai Tea the je ne sais quoi you keep going back for, we may have the culprit pegged. It s cardamom. This spice from the ginger family gives that intense aroma and taste to your chai. It s not just for tea, though. Cardamom is used to flavor all kinds of dishes. Its combo of soothing mint and clove hints and that ginger kick somehow enhances both an herbal tea and a strong gin. Hailing originally from India and surrounding regions, cardamom is quite common in Indian cooking, but somewhere along the line it snuck into Nordic sweets recipes, like the Scandinavian bread, Julekake. Missing! I lost an Oleana sweater with an umbrella solje pin from Bergen on it at a Sons or Daughters of Norway function. I would be most grateful for its return! To qualify for a Hovedstad Lodge scholarship, you must be either a member, the child or grandchild of a member, in good standing, who has been active in the lodge at least 3 of the past 5 years. See a scholarship committee member for an application!

5 Western Washington Welcomes... The Stoughton Norwegian Dancers is a group made up of Stoughton High School students who perform authentic Scandinavian dances. The group began in 1953, with their first performance in Stoughton's own Syttende Mai (Norwegian Independence Day) parade. Today, they share their talents all across the United States, entertaining young and old and hopefully leaving behind an increased awareness of Norwegian heritage. It will be our pleasure to welcome this talented group to the Puget Sound area for their Spring Tour in March. They will have stops in Seattle, Poulsbo, McChord Air Force Base and two, right here! On March 23rd, they will dance in the morning at Peter G. Schmidt school in Tumwater and in the afternoon, they ll perform at the Panorama City auditorium, which will be open to the public. That means we ll get a chance to see these fabulous kids up close and personal! I ve seen them before and I can promise you it ll be a fabulous performance. We need housing for these kids. (They come in twos.) They arrive on the evening of March 22nd after a show in Seattle, spend the day here in Olympia, have a performance at McChord that evening, then back here to sleep and off to Crystal Mountain the next morning. Basically, we need a place for them to sleep for 2 nights and 2 breakfasts. They come with their own transportation, so you don t need to drive them anywhere. In return, you get to spend some time with these motivated young people and find out what interested them about the Norwegian dance program. It will be fun!
