1 KiwanisSimi Valley Kaleidoscope Volume 2, Number 6 December 15, 2006 T WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS EPIPHANY HOMES CHRISTMAS On Sunday, December 10, Santa (Wes Miller), Mrs. Claus (Holly), his elves...tanya and Josh, and all of his other helpers, Elaine Hintlian, Jim and Debbie Sheehan, Shelley Howard, Linda Miller, and Pam Smith went to five special needs homes and delivered presents to the excited kids and young adults. They were so excited to see Santa and they all sang Christmas Carols, which lifted everyone s spirits. Just to see their faces light up made the experience heartwarming, and so worthwhile! 2 YA KNOW...? There are so many things to be grateful for at this time of the year, but at the top of my list is all the cooperation, enthusiasm and hours put in by our members. It makes all of us proud to be a member of this club. Last month our club donated $2277 to local charities and 145 service hours to the community. The holiday party was terrific, the AKtion Club is ready to be chartered, the golf committee is excited and on a roll, the hungry are being fed, the Free Clinic is offering services, and packages of necessities and Girl Scout cookies were sent to our servicemen in Iraq. Severely disabled patients, both children and adults were visited by Santa with special gifts purchased for each one of them. I could go on and on, but these things and others are happening because of YOU. I am so excited that so many of you are going to Kiwanis University, and registration is still open. Your cost for the day, including lunch is $20. Spouses are welcome to attend. This is your chance to hear Kiwanis International Past President, Steve Siemens speak. This day will demonstrate that you belong to a significant, premiere service organization. Lee and I wish all of you and your families a special holiday season and we ll see you at Rosemont. Thanks for being a Kiwanian. Your Prez, Elaine CLINT BLACK SHINES IN TEXAS When it comes to San Antonio s convention entertainment, forget portion control. You ll want to go ahead and Texas size it with Grammy winning country music crooner Clint Black. Black is set to bring his Texas rooted talents and signature black hat center stage exclusively for Kiwanians and their guests during the 2007 Kiwanis International Convention. Black put himself on the charts and in fans hearts in 1989 with his triple platinum album Killin Time, featuring the title song and A Better Man, among other chart toppers. Since then, he s had hit after hit, won a Grammy (and multiple other awards), and, with wife (and sometimes duet partner) Lisa Hartman Black, entertained United States troops stationed in Somalia. Clint has the rare gift of being able to craft songs that are both artful and commercial; hits that can be taken either as audio candy or as insightful poetry, writes country music expert and Music Row columnist Robert K. Oermann. Black takes Kiwanis stage July 5. Tickets, which can be ordered on the convention registration form, are US$25 per person in advance or $35 per person on site. JOIN IN THE FUN AT ROSEMONT! DON T MISS OUT! During the week following Christmas, the action is all at the Rose Parade float pavilion. Come and help make those yet to be famous Breakfast Burritos, sell those Hot Dogs and Nachos, and see the floats as they re completed! What a great way to keep the spirit of the season alive! 3 MID-WINTER CONFERENCE The mid year conference will be on February 10th at the Ontario Convention Center. This is a one day meeting concluding with the Dunlap Recognition, ʺWinter Festivalʺ. I suggest that anyone planning to go to the event on Saturday night look into booking a hotel room. All the new Dunlap honorees and a guest will receive complimentary tickets. For the rest of us the cost for the evening will be $75. They are putting some very interesting things together for the dinner, like never before. They are truly thinking out of the box. There will be a Kiwanis Talent Showcase featuring our own talented members from Cal Nev Ha. Guests will have an opportunity to buy votes for the ʺKiwanis Choiceʺ entertainer for $1 per vote. Ballot box stuffing is encouraged. Proceeds will go toward Kiwanis Cal Nev Ha Foundation programs such as Pediatric Trauma, Club and Division Grants, Scholarships and Leadership Training. The ʺKiwanis Choiceʺ winner will be honored with a William A. Dunlap Fellowship award (or an upgrade to the next level). I am certain the entertainment will be exceptional. If any of our members are gifted with a great talent and would be willing to participate in the talent show, it would be really fun. Elaine READ AROUND THE WORLD February 1 through March 3 marks Kiwanisʹ Read Around the World literacy campaign. Kiwanis Clubs worldwide will team with their sponsored youth; Key Clubs, Builders, and AKtion clubs to stage programs that encourage kids to enjoy reading. Kiwanis has posters, brochures and general information that can be viewed online at Several of you have shown an interest in this area. If anyone would like to activate this project in Simi Valley please let Elaine Hintlian know and we will proceed. It could be a great project for our youth. SIMI VALLEY KIWANIS CELEBRITY CLASSIC GOLF TOURNAMENT Fifteen members of our club are fully committed to getting the rest of you motivated and active in making this the biggest and best golf tournament of them all! The CHARITIES subcommittee requested all members to submit names of charities you feel would be good candidates to share in the profits of this event. If you have one in mind, please send an e mail to Madeleine Kolodziej at madi4svk@aol.com as soon as possible. The decision must be made by the end of December. Lynda Miller will be gathering names of SPONSORS along with a contact name and phone, if possible. Just submit the information to Lynda at irishcasle@aol.com. The committee will decide how the contact is made. TEAMS are being formed among ALL members of the club. If you would like to be teamed with a particular person, sign up on the board at meetings. If you don t choose a partner, Don Sturt will choose one for you. This is a MAJOR event. Every member is involved. Golf is secondary to the fundraising effort. We have the potential of raising well over $50,000, but we can only do it if everyone participates. This is what Kiwanis is about, Folks; if each member does a little bit a whole lot will happen! REMEMBER: ONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE Madeleine KIWANIS KOLLEGE The first president of Kiwanis International was George F. Hixson of the Rochester, N.Y. club. He was elected at the first convention in Cleveland in 1916 and re elected the next year. He is the only International President to serve for two terms. The Hixson Fellowship fo the Kiwanis International Foundation is named in his honor; Hixson medals are presented to donors who have contributed at least $1,000 to the Hixson Endowment Fund or the Worldwide Service Project.

On Tuesday, December 19 they will be singing Christmas Carols at Simi Valley Town Center.
