2 2019 BUCK CREEK FESTIVAL The Buck Creek Festival is proud to begin its eighteenth year as one of the leading fundraising events in the Birmingham metropolitan area. Our festival attracts visitors, crafters, and vendors from across the southern United States. Participants come from Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. Our festival takes place in Old Town Helena at the Amphitheater Park on Highway 261. Strolling through tree shaded booths, festival visitors will encounter over 100 arts and craft vendors lining the creek and filling the woods. Parents have the comfort of kicking back and listening to phenomenal music performed by local artists while watching their children play to their hearts content in the activity area nearby. Food vendors provide a sumptuous array of culinary choices to satisfy any appetite. Our attention to detail and our focus on traditional and local musical acts ensures that the experience for both our guests and sponsors will be a memorable one. Helena was awarded Alabama Community of Excellence in 2016 and rated one of Alabama s Safest Cities in We look forward to showing you why the Buck Creek Festival was recently named the #1 festival in Shelby County. This family friendly event raises funds for local charities. The Buck Creek Festival is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and has put back over $271,000 into the community. This success depends upon the participation of sponsors who are faithfully involved in our unique event.

4 Buck Creek Duck Race As the premier attraction of the Buck Creek Festival, the duck race brings in ducks from across the country vying for an opportunity to train and compete with the elite of their sport. Beginning about four weeks before the race, ducks search for sponsors. Duck sponsorship is $5.00 for individual ducks, or a flock of five ducks can be sponsored for $ The sponsor of a flock will receive a Buck Creek Festival t-shirt. Duck wranglers will be working with our aquatic athletes to promote their sponsor fees so every duck can enter the race. The money is used for training, food, lodging, physical therapy and optional uniforms for the ducks. Many of these ducks have raced over the course in prior years, so they are aware of the pitfalls and dangers such as the current, rocks, and the dam that make reaching the finish line a challenge. Ducks found cheating including the use of performance enhancing drugs, flying, swimming under water, or any unsportsmanlike conduct will result in disqualification. Some past contestants that enjoyed the water and sunshine a little too much thus preventing other ducks from finishing the course were reprimanded for their behavior. The race begins above the dam on Buck Creek in Old Town Helena. It is an anxious time for the contestants and their sponsors. Spectators of all ages gather on the island below the dam as well as along the creek to cheer their ducks to the finish line. First, second, and third place winners are escorted to the festival stage to bask in the glory of their accomplishment. After the winners have been properly certified, the challenge is to corral the slower ducks and bring them back to training camp. For that purpose, expert duck wranglers are waiting beyond the finish line.

5 Children s Activity Area The fun starts in the back of the park on Saturday with the Children s Activity Area. Early in the morning you can see the inflatable rides take shape, and if you watch closely you may catch a glimpse of some of the committee members doing quality control on the rides to assure that each child will have fun. Sometimes, quality control has to be performed more than once. The Helena Kiwanis Club makes armbands available for $5 per child at the park entrance and in the Children s Activity Area. The armbands allow children to come and go and play all day. The Helena chapter of Kiwanis works hard for children in the community. They have built a premier playground in Joe Tucker Park where all kids, regardless of handicap, can enjoy being a child in a fun, safe environment.
