3 No. 2 sunday 6 th july 2014 Analysis: WOC Sprint 2014 Women The sprint in Venice was a mix of routechoice legs and navigationally technical legs. Several of the favourites did some big routechoice mistakes (or other mistakes) losing them the place on the podium. Below detailed splits tables and route choice options are included for each leg. For the legs of special interest (legs which were desicive with respect to route choices taken by the runners), the variant each runner took in included in the table below the map. Summary: Most decisive legs The following were the most decisive legs - with respect to the medals: Leg 1: Note how Maja Alm loses 4 seconds already to the first control - having only 30th best split time. 6 Analysis: WOC Sprint 2014 Men The sprint in Venice was a mix of routechoice legs and navigationally technical legs. Quite a few legs were without routechoice options - and usually most of the runners chose the correct route. However, several of the favourites did some big routechoice mistakes (or other mistakes) losing them the place on the podium. Below detailed splits tables and route choice options are included for each leg. For the legs of special interest (legs which were desicive with respect to route choices taken by the runners), the variant each runner took in included in the table below the map. Summary: Most decisive legs The following were the most decisive legs - with respect to the medals: Leg 1: Note that the biggest favourite Jonas Leandersson loses 5 seconds already to the first control - on an easy technical leg without real route choice options. Leg 3: This is one of the legs which looks most complex on first sight, but when analyzing it closer, most of the alternatives are nearly equal time-wise. The only thing you can do where you really lose time is to go left (either the variant marked E or a combination of E and B. Both lose you around 8-10 seconds - having to run 50 meters longer. One top favourite loses time here: Matthias Kyburz loses 9 seconds by running E. Leg 7: At leg 6 Yannick Michels was in second place - but on control number 7 Michiels did a mistake costing 19(!) seconds. Many of the women made mistake on the same leg. Leg 9: The spectator leg is easy without any technical challenges except for a map exchange. Note how Daniel Hubmann loses 6 seconds here! Leg 10: Another leg with only one real variant - but yet Matthias Kyburz choses the other one. Except for Kyburz who choses the wrong variant and loses 14 seconds, all top runners pick the right variant here. Leg 11: This is were Sà ren Bobach could have lost his gold medal - Bobach having his biggest time loss of 11 seconds chosing the C-variant (which is really a hybrid of the two real variants A and B. Bobach said himself that this was his only mistake - the rest of the race was perfect. Two other runners lose significant time on this leg by running variant B: Kvaal à sterbã and Martin Hubmann. Leg 15: One of the few legs where Tue Lassen loses time; 5 seconds lost on this leg which does not really have any route choice options and is also quite easy techically. Leg 16: The Swedes Jerker Lysell (7 seconds) and Jonas Leandersson (9 seconds) lose time on this leg without any real route choice options. Not clear why they lose so much. Leg 17: This is again a leg which looks complex on the map, but with only two real alternatives A and B - and these were quite equal in time. It seems like B was maybe 3-4 seconds faster based on the splits times. Jerker Lysell (6 seconds, B), Matthias Kyburz (6 seconds, A) and Jonas Leanderson (9 seconds A) lose time here. Leg 19: This is finally the leg which decided the race. Nearly all run B - the best variant. Daniel Hubmann and a few others run A - and lose seconds. This decided the medals - and will be remembered for some time... MEN s-1 MEN: S-1 (Legtimes) 1. Dent Julian (36th) 0:29 +0:00 2. Kyburz Matthias (5th) 0:29 +0:00 3. 14 IOF Congress in Italy at 2014 In less than two weeks - from 5 to 12 July Italy is making the official debut in the list of nations that hosted the World Orienteering and Trail Orienteering Championships (). Over orienteers will be gathering in Trentino and Veneto regions, in the North-eastern part of the country, and we are honored to be the house of the major world event concerning the discipline, Trentino and Veneto are the main areas in which orienteering successfully developed being practiced for years already, as FISO (Italian Orienteering Federation) President Mauro Gazzerro pointed out during the presentation in Venice last week. As a whole, thousands of people from 54 nations will gather in Italy soon, 500 athletes will battle it out for world medals and the XXVII IOF congress is also to take place in Lavarone during the week, fitting into the busy schedule made of races and trainings. Since the IOF (International Orienteering Federation) was founded in 1961, the IOF Congress and General Assembly have been held every two years with some exceptions and extraordinary assemblies throughout the years. The Ordinary GA in Italy is scheduled on Thursday 10 July, while a Pre-Gen- eral Assembly will take place the day before. During the GA, IOF counsellors and board plus nations representatives will analyse and debate what happened since the last GA held in Lausanne (SUI) two years ago and take into consideration future perspectives. Beside the GA, delegates and all the IOF commission members (Foot-O, Ski-O, MTBO, Trail-O, Map, IT, Rules, Environment, Medical) will be involved in workshops, meetings and seminars during the whole week. On Friday 11 July, more meetings are scheduled in which EU federations, Non-EU federations and federations of the Mediterranean area will gather separately. A Developing Seminar is also scheduled with new countries expected to seat at the IOF table. The Congress represents a great chance to draw more attention to the Orienteering world claimed IOF counsellor Maria Silvia Viti as in a few days in Italy there will be a huge number of athletes, trainers and nations representatives, all invited to take part in our meetings. On Thursday 10 July (5pm) a conference named Technology in Orienteering will take place at the Astoria Hotel in Lavarone. IOF Development Clinic in Italy For a fourth time the IOF and the World Orienteering Championships organisers hold a development clinic for the newer IOF countries in order to help them develop the sport in their country, and to participate in the World Orienteering Championships. During the clinic they have the opportunity to practice in the beautiful terrain and forest of Trentino-Veneto. Several training sessions will be organised close to the WOC village. We welcome the nine countries who send athletes and coaches to the clinic in Italy: Argentina, Azerbaijan, Chile, Colombia, Cyprus, Ecuador, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia. 14

15 No. 2 sunday 6 th july 2014 sustainable development The Orienteering World Championships (WOC) and the World Trail Orienteering Championships (WTOC) will be held in Trentino and Veneto. The highlands of Folgaria, Lavarone, Luserna in Trentino and Asiago 7 Comuni in Veneto are areas with wonderful landscapes and natural reserves. A responsible use of natural resources and protection of the ecosystem is a prerequisite for sustainable development. The organizing committee is committed to use environmental resources in a sustainable way. So we will adopt responsible organizational procedures in order to protect and preserve our forests. Orienteering is by definition a sport of the woods. Some of the venues are in the forests in Gallio (loc. Campomulo) and Lavarone, and they are PEFC certified. The sport and sustainability have once again found a reason to proceed on a common path: promoting a greater environmental responsibility and a proper land management. We are aware of the crucial contribution that a sport like orienteering can lead in communicating the important values of sustainability. So we will also use this opportunity to provide you with complete information on the sustainability of orienteering as the process of sustainable forest management and wood. Specifically, we will make sure to implement the following responsible measures addressed to the organizers, athletes and any other participants. GUIDELINES FOR THE ORGANIZERS The conservation project consists of a series of guidelines addressed to all the organizers. These are the guidelines that should be respected in both national and international events: - Protection of the natural environment along the routes; - Waste reduction in dining options; - Waste separation; - Use of environment-friendly materials; - Use of sustainable means of transport; - Eco-friendly prizes. INFORMATION FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS The project involves the propagation of information about environment-friendly policies for both spectators and athletes. In particular, we will offer: - Interventions in schools; - Information panels; - Vademecum; - Questionnaires; - Info point. FINAL CHECK-OUT A committee will evaluate the event on the basis of the project objectives to be achieved in the environmental field, measurable and verifiable in progress and at the end of the manifestations of the same. Our goal is to minimize the impact of the event on the environment: to offset emissions of CO2 which will be produced during the various stages of organization and the running of the event. At the end of the events a special report will be published. RUBBISH / TRASH An event of the magnitude of WOC 2014 generates a great amount of waste. We have arranged for a system of recycling and collection of rubbish at all the venues. We ask you to use the numerous waste bins that are on site. We are planning to recycle them in coordination with the local communities that host our events. Plastic, glass, compostable trash and burnable rubbish will be optimally recycled. You will help us making WOC 2014 a clean event by respecting the rules of waste separation. We have arranged for a sufficient number of toilets close to the starts in the forest and in the finish areas. Please use the toilets instead of the forest. Please leave your cups and wrappers at the refreshment stations.
