1 SASA-II SA Age Group Games September 2018 Durban, KZN Hosted by: KWAZULU NATAL SPORT & RECREATION ASSOCIATION FOR THE INTELLECTUALLY IMPAIRED in partnership with KZN Government 20 1
2 Message from SASA-II President It is a great pleasure for me to welcome everybody in Durban for the SA Age Group Games It is always good to see new sport friends as well as the friends we already know from years ago. We also miss the friends that are not with us anymore either by retirement or transfer to other employment or left us to their place of rest. I am still thankful to my God and Saviour who allowed me to enjoy good health for more than 21 years serving SASA-II on National level. It was not always easy but the joy I received from our athletes and the support I received from our officials was much more worth the financial struggles when we had to send team to World Championships. Allow me to thank each and everybody that was walking with me on this road, each and everybody that form part of SASA-II achievements and each and everybody that I met on this road. I could learn so much from everybody I met and I m a much more developed person after all these years. I want to congratulate our National Swimming Team for people with Down Syndrome that made South Africa very proud in Canada during the World Championships. Ina and your team, we salute you! We wish the National Athletics and Table Tennis Teams for people with Down Syndrome all the best for the World Championships in Madeira from 1 8 October and good luck to the National Half Marathon Team that will represent South Africa at the Inas World Half Marathon Championships in Portugal, October. We look forward to a well organised SA Games in Durban. Congratulations to our LOC, KZNA members, the Departments, DISSA KZN, Municipality and officials and all our sponsors, media and supporters. Nkosi sikelel iafrika, maluphakanyis uphondo lwayo yizwa imithandazo yethu Nkosi sikelele, thina luswapho lwayo. Sounds the call to come together, and united we shall stand. Let us live and strive for freedom in South Africa our land. Good luck to all our athletes! Remember, it s not always about winning but more about participation. You must go back home as a stronger person with better skills than what you came with. Enjoy the week with us! Lizzie Vogel God bless 2 19
3 Message from National Sports Convener Ama Swana Swana Ama Swana Swana was born out of the challenge the athletes are rising to. The Swan is so beautiful and showing elegance, just as our athletes but the Swan cannot fly high like other birds, just as our athletes but they remain God s creation just like any other. On behalf of our athletes I welcome everyone to the SA Age Group Games in KZN. All the athletes from different provinces are geared up for this challenging task. From these games we will be selecting national teams that will be traveling to Australia in Brisbane for the Global Games in October We request athletes to give their all. In God we trust Have a wonderful Tournament Kenny Kubayi TA Ama Swana Swana Song Take my hand for I shall guide you All the way to the dream you see, Grip my hand and let me lead you To get part of your destiny. Hold on tight and follow closely Never failing, trusting boldly. Side by side we shall force all the way Winning every fight, every game you play Step by step you will live and learn To climb the crest of no return To stay on the road that has no bend To be winners at the glorious end Chorus: Like a Swan spread your wings and fly Leave the water and search the sky. Break the darkness and reach the light, Greet the world on your heavenly flight. Find the way to the dream you see, Heading forward for ever free. 4 Message from National Futsal Convener My very best wish to you all. To all our SASA II futsal players coaches and team managers. This ground-breaking sporting event will hopefully unite all our nine provinces and also provide a platform for futsal players to prove to the world that disability is not inability. Kicking a ball is second nature for most for most of our athletes and the players with Down syndrome are no exception. It is up to us as coaches and managers to develop the necessary skills and provide sufficient coaching for these players. Inas World Cross Country Championship. Paris, France. Futsal provides more gross-motor skills benefits than any other sporting code. It proves the foot-eye coordination, which is an enormous advantage for our players. Sports in general assist tremendously with the social development of our players with Down Syndrome. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many thanks to SASA II executive committee, Provinces L.O.C, Sponsors, Supporters and Stakeholder for role played towards the success of this event. 6 MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL ATHLETICS CONVENER Athletics family would like to welcome everyone to this Age Group Games. I would like to congratulate all the athletes and the management that have been selected to come and represent their respectable Provinces. It is only through hard work and dedication that one can be able to be part of the team. All these efforts are done to improve the quality of life of our athletes. It is very impressive that our standard of athletics is moving step by step up the ladder. We have our athletes with Down Syndrome who will be representing South Africa in October at the World Championships in Portugal (Madeira) in October. I hope this will serve as a motivation to the upcoming athletes. Maximum performance will always open doors for our athletes to qualify for international participation. To KwaZulu Natal, we really applaud you for all the arrangements you have done. Special thanks to various departments which gave assistance to provinces. We also appreciate the contribution made by parents, schools, managers and coaches. This is all done with the aim of uplifting the standard of our athletes. Let us all enjoy the games and use the opportunity given fruitfully. God Bless Rocky Magoka CLASSIFICATION & Eligibility of Athletes The diagnostic criteria for intellectual disability used by INAS and the IPC are consistent with those of the World Health Organisation and the American Association on Mental Retardation and are recognised internationally by professional organisations: Intellectual Disability is a disability characterized by significant limitation both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behaviour as expressed in conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills. This disability originates before the age of 18 The classification of athletes with an intellectual disability is a two stage process: 1. Primary Eligibility - for details. On completion of this stage, the athlete s name will appear on the Inas MASTER LIST and they will be eligible to compete nationally and internationally in all INAS sanctioned events. INAS licenses are renewable annually and this is managed by SASA-II. 2. Sports-Specific Classification. In some sports, athletes will need to present for sports specific classification. This is managed on a sport by sport basis and involves on site assessments at IPC sanctioned events. After completion, athletes names will then appear on the IPC Master list and they can compete at all IPC sanctioned events. The annual licensing is managed by SASCOC. Website: CLASSIFICATION Down Syndrome Down syndrome is a genetic disorder - persons with Down syndrome are born with an extra No 21 chromosome, which causes both physical and intellectual disability. In sport there are 2 separate categories: Trisomy 21 (T21) (every cell in the body has the extra No 21 chromosome) Mosaic Down syndrome In Mosaic Down syndrome the extra No 21 chromosome is not present in all the cells so they can be affected differently by the genetic disorder - depending on the number of cells affected
7 MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL NETBALL CONVENER The Sportsman s Oath THE GAMES OATH On behalf of all the competitors, I solemnly pledge that we shall take part in these Games respecting and abiding by the rules governing them, in true spirit of sportsmanship, for the joy of participation to the glory of sport and the honour of country. We are looking forward to enjoying the welcome of the warmer weather and the ocean. Players and teachers are all busy preparing to participate in the National Games We are all in anticipation to see the best performers from all the provinces. This year we will be selecting the following performing athletes: a) the best player overall, b) the best defender, c) the best attacker and d) the best 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd teams. We recognise that extra effort was put into coaching, technique, skills and fitness by all the Coaches, Managers and Teachers. Thank you for your hard work. For the players to perform excellently they need continuous encouragement from all of us. It s also very important that we help them enjoy the games and make some friends. It is only through your hard work, endurance and discipline that we will see and experience the results to come. In that light we would like to thank you and remind you to continue encouraging them to perform with excellence and uplift them to achieve greater heights. We as the management will do the best that we can to ensure a fair game for all the players. We are playing and competing under Netball SA rules, because Netball is Netball. We pray for safety and travelling mercies for all, to the games and back home. Let us make 2018 one to remember. Even if trophies are not taken home, that good memories will be treasured by all. 8 these athletes. Message from KAZNA-II Chairperson Welcome everyone to the SASA-II Age Group Games being held in Durban/ Ethekwini KZN with the name and surname. Our main aim is to develop our athletes and create a love for sports. As a province we want to ensure that you enjoy your stay in Durban. As part of development we have to recognise the and acknowledge the progress made by Sometimes it is hard to accept the fact the hard work and dedication of our code convenors is looked down upon by some. Training and getting the teams ready is not an easy task. It breaks my heart to find that after such hard work you receive the saddest news ever that your team is not going to take part in the event especially internationally. Sad and discouraging as it may be - keep on walking and run that extra mile for the benefit of our learners/athletes. Furthermore, to all athletes and coaches, managers and officials from all provinces participating in these games be assured you are all shining stars. Many a time people do good but are not recognized. A winner is a dreamer who never gives up. In closing, as a province with warm weather and warm hearted people, we want to say enjoy the beach and make the games exciting and enjoyable. A big thank you goes to all athletes and provincial affiliates, sup- Manco GAMES LOC Portfolio Names Contact Administration Ruon van Zyl Mfundo Mncina Themba Kubheka Stho Nzimande Ashile Maseko Transport Qinisani Mngadi Accommodation Catering Booklet Protocol & Hospitality Games Services Ceremonies Buzz Goeman Makhosi Mbatha Phumzile Buthelezi Barbara Higgins Xoli Thompson Ina Fowler Dudu Thabethe Shanita Lalloo Khura Buthelezi Zama Mpungose Nonhlanhla Mngandi Team Liaison Dr Kiren Gokar Security Colin Mehlwana Medical Ann van Bosch Marketing & Branding Xoli Thompson Volunteer Services Prince Zondi DOE Rep Mr EB Zuma DSR Rep Lovelife Mr JJJ Mkhize Selby Mthembu 8 13
