FEBRUARY 2018 VOLUME 49 ISSUE Northern Virginia Corve e Club Annual Banquet Wri en by Chrissy Kinman and Mae Fromm Saturday, January 27, 2018 marked the celebrated end of NVCC s 48 th year as a club and the start of its 49 th year of events. The club s year end banquet was once again held at Maggiano s Little Italy in Tyson s Corner. The room was full with 72 people in attendance. Before attendees even entered the banquet room there was a buzz of excitement as people picked up their swag bags and purchased tickets for the amazing array of raffle and table prizes, including the centerpiece on each table which was a beautiful diecast model Corvette with authentic detailing and opening hoods, doors and trunks. Many members arrived early enough to grab a drink from the bar and socialize with friends before taking their seats and getting better acquainted with those at their table. Maggiano s served up family style dinner plates for us to enjoy. Service began with two salads to choose from, followed by phenomenal appetizers and three scrumptious main courses. Most enjoyed a little bit of everything but for those who zeroed in on the lasagna or chicken, there was plenty to fill up on. Desserts were served during the 2017 club recap and the look ahead for 2018 and beyond. 2 VOLUME 49, ISSUE 2 PAGE 2 Throughout the evening there were raffle prizes, trivia questions from Jeff Klain, and a slide show from the previous year s events. Every table seemed to have at least one photo showcasing either them or their corvette, allowing for many jovial stories to be shared. Club President Kris McCandless was once again the night s speaker. He shared the vision the board has for the upcoming year. Then Kris handed out the awards for the Council Member of the Year (CMOY) to Vicki Allen-Scott who s currently the Secretary and Member of the Year (MOY) to Shawn Waddell, who both worked hard this past year and deserved this title. Rick Poage also stood up and talked about the plans for this coming year to prepare for Northern Virginia Corvette Club s 50 th Anniversary. The night s special guests were from Page Chevrolet: Owner China and Eric Arbuckle, Service Manager Vince Brown and his wife, and Service Technician John McGhee. Big winners for the evening were Peggy, winning the Official Brick from Corvette Assembly Plant donated by the National Corvette Museum; Victoria Hulick, winning the $155 Barrel Oaks Winery Deluxe Wine Tasting Package for Eight; David Kuhn, winning the first Friday at the Track (FATT) certificate donated by our former council member, Stewart Fox; and finally, Mae Fromm who won the last FATT certificate donated by one of our members, Scott Cox. The evening ended with the 50/50 of $130 which was won by Omar Gordon, who s never won and made the evening more special as he just had his birthday. A special thank you is given to Mae Fromm for taking on the responsibility of planning the banquet and finding sponsors to donate the evening s prizes. She couldn t have done it without the help of the Vicki and Kara, and all the members that helped make this event happen. We are truly very grateful for the generous sponsors that donated some prizes and giveaways for this event, namely Barrel Oak Winery, Corvette America, Corvette Central, National Corvette Museum, Eckler's Corvette, Griots Garage, Jegs, Page Chevrolet, Rock Auto, Zip Corvette Parts, Dog Fish Alehouse, Adam's Polishes, and two of our own members as mentioned above. We definitely look forward to the next banquet!

PAGE 3 GLASS GAZETTE THE PRESIDENT S CORNER FEBRUARY 2018 Happy Springtime in February! The mild weather has allowed many of us to awaken our Corvettes from their winter slumber and turn those wintry frowns upside down. Okay, I know, that was cheesy! But I hope you have been a few of those like me who has disconnected the Battery Tender and charged it with real RPMs! Another memorable banquet was enjoyed by many, thanks to Mae Fromm s first-time efforts; raffling off the centerpieces was a nice touch. And thanks to everyone who helped up front and after the banquet. Thank you especially to our welcoming team: John and Lynn Stark, Tab Tabellario, Vicki and John Scott. I was super pleased to get the Arbuckles, the Browns and John McGee, our Page Chevy Corvette Mechanic and favorite guy to talk tech with to attend the banquet. Congratulations to Vicki Allen Scott for winning 2017 Council Member of the Year (many like me thought her serving double duty as secretary and social chair earned her that award) and Shawn Waddell 2017 Member of the Year for his many years of faithful, creative, long and short cruise leadership. As we gear up for another great year of driving fun (and Social Chair Bob Devery has some fun tricks up his sleeve!), the car won t go far without oil or grease. You are the oil and grease for this club, so please do your share to volunteer for a committee or to lead a cruise or just help out at our two signature events: The June 3 Car Show and the fall Teen Driving School (aka Tire Rack Street Survival). And be sure to mark down Saturday morning, March 24, 9:30-11:30 as the Breakfast GBM. This time we will have much more room at the Amphora Diner Deluxe in Herndon (1151 Elden Street). 5 PAGE 5 GLASS GAZETTE NVCC GENERAL BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 23, 2018 VICKI ALLEN SCOTT, SECRETARY Officers Present: Kris McCandless, President John Scott, Vice President John Stark, Treasurer Vicki Scott, Secretary Jerry Lelansky, Officer at Large The meeting was held at Page Chevrolet in Alexandria, VA and called to order at 7:43pm by President Kris McCandless. Kris welcomed all attendees and wished them a happy 2018! One prospective member was in attendance, Peter Grimes (who owns two Corvettes). Also present were former presidents John Palmgren, Dick Hammaker, and Rick Poage. Kris then asked everyone who drives a C7 Corvette to stand, then C6, and so on, through C1. All Corvette generations were represented, except C1 although it was noted that several NVCC members who were not at the meeting, own C1s. The meeting minutes from the November 2017 GBM were unanimously approved. Kris asked the members present to contribute their ideas and thoughts to the Council, regarding possible events and cruises for the Club. Vicki passed out updated social calendars, as a reference. Committee reports followed: Social Vicki S. announced that the social committee had a first meeting in early December, with Bob Devery presiding as committee chair. Several NVCC members are involved with the committee, in various roles. She pointed out that the banquet is sold out, and several other events are planned for the coming year, including a breakfast GBM in March. Vicki requested members to be more forthcoming with suggestions for new events. Membership George Durk reported that we have a total of 89 members and 6 prospects (with 3 gained during the holidays)! George announced that Partha Niyogi is leaving NVCC due to an out of state move. Kris noted that Partha has been a very active member and served as a cruise leader. He will be missed by the Club; however, this is a positive move for Partha, and we wish him the best. Treasury John Stark is running late tonight so the treasury report will be tabled for the time being. Committees Kris announced that the challenge for the Council last year was the bylaws, and this year s is populating the committees. So far, the 50 th Anniversary committee has been established, with Rick Poage as chairman. 50 th Anniversary Committee Rick Poage, committee chair, announced that he, Dick Hammaker, and Marsha Batchellor will be meeting soon to discuss a timeline of events to celebrate our 50 th anniversary. He is looking into the design of a new 50 th Anniversary Club logo, to be used exclusively after its introduction (in 2019). TDS Committee Kris asked for a show of hands to indicate an interest in keeping TDS as a Club event and about 1/3 of the group stuck their hands up. Kris added that, in order to maintain the event, we must have a leader and several volunteers to staff it which is why the council decided to form a committee. Paul Benish announced that he s willing to train volunteers for TDS. He knows how to manage a TDS event; however, his current work schedule prevents him from committing to doing so.

VOLUME 49, ISSUE 2 PAGE 6 Car Show Committee Kris spoke briefly about NVCC s annual car show, scheduled for Sunday, June 3 rd at Page Chevy. David Poole, Omar Gordon, and Theda Ellis all volunteered to help with the event. Social Committee Bob Devery announced that he s impressed with the slate of activities planned so far for 2018 and that he will also put together a few movie/dinner events for the weekend, as well as mid-week. He added that Jerry & Irene Lelansky volunteered to act as liaisons for NVCC with other Corvette clubs, primarily in the Washington Metro area, although they may range further. New Event Suggestions George Durk suggested that the CCA Autocross schedule be added back onto the calendar. Mike Moore suggested including NCM s Museum in Motion events be added to the calendar. Kevin Van Sloten spoke about a private test track in NC that is available for rental. Shawn Waddell announced that he wants to organize a golf outing, as well as a drag race day with the Mustang Club. The RDV Winery tour still has four spots open, at $65 each. John Scott reminded everyone that he has literature re NCM s 25 th anniversary gathering. Following coverage of the committees, Kris announced that Vicki Scott will compile a Club handbook, to contain standard operating procedures for events like TDS, annual car show, summer picnic, annual banquet, etc. He also announced that Club nametags are available for pickup at the break. NVCC Publicity with Page Chevy Paul Cestone suggested that the Club ask Page Chevrolet to arrange for salespeople to place an NVCC business card in the interior of every Corvette sold. Kris informed him that the Club has already made this arrangement with Page after which, Vick Scott announced that she will deliver literature (trifold brochures) and business cards to Page Chevrolet s sales area, within a few weeks. Banquet Update Mae announced that the annual banquet, scheduled for Saturday, January 27 th, is sold out. Event activities will include a 50/50, various raffles, and door prizes. We will welcome special guests from Page Chevrolet s management and service center (China Arbuckle and her husband, Vince Brown and his wife, and Corvette mechanic John McGhee). Rick Poage will talk about the 50 th anniversary coming up next year. Mae thanked everyone who has helped her prepare for this event. Trivia None was presented. 50/50 Drawing - $42 jackpot was won by Henry Alonso. The meeting adjourned at 8:39 pm. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS: Michael and Luzma Zabkowski 2014 Coupe

VOLUME 49, ISSUE 2 PAGE 8 Fellow NVCC Members, I hope this message finds you well as 2018 gets under way. We re looking forward to a great year for the Northern Virginia Corvette Club, especially as we begin the one year countdown to our 50 th Anniversary year. To help ensure that 2018 will be a great year, we have already put two club committees in place the special 50 th Anniversary Committee, chaired by former president Rick Poage; and the standing Social Committee, chaired by Bob Devery. We now need to form two additional standing committees, of four to five members each, to manage the planning for and execution of NVCC s two signature events the annual June Corvettes Care Car Show, hosted by our sponsor Page Chevrolet; and the semi-annual Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School. In the past, these events have been managed by a somewhat ad hoc group of NVCC volunteers, in particular NVCC members Stewart Fox and David Dubois. Messrs. Fox and Dubois took on much of the load to make these events a success in the past, and with their departure from the area last year, now is a good time to establish regular standing committees to manage these two important club events. This note is a call for volunteers to serve on either the Car Show Committee or the Teen Driving School Committee. I would especially welcome having volunteers to serve as Chairs of the committees. While I would not discourage anyone from volunteering to serve on both committees, I hope that we will have enough volunteers so that the workload for committee members is lighter. If you are willing to serve on either committee and especially if you are willing to serve as a committee chair, please send a note to me at vp@nvcorvetteclub.com, listing the committee on which you would be willing to serve. Please include secretary@nvcorvetteclub.com as a cc on your note. Many thanks in advance for your consideration and willingness to help as NVCC moves into John Scott Vice President SOLD OUT

PAGE 9 GLASS GAZETTE NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM By: NCM Ambassador Dick Hammaker Let me introduce myself, my name is Dick HAM Hammaker, your new National Corvette Museum (NCM) Ambassador. I'm a NCM Lifetime Member and have enjoyed everything Bowling Green, KY, has to offer. I've been to the Museum with NVCC's Wicked Good Cruise, taken laps at the Motorsports Park, attended the Michelin Spring Bash, several Assembly Plant Tours, and many Museum-in-Motion (MiM) events...can't wait to get back. Excerpt from the NCM Website... America s Sports Car an exciting legend produced only in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The Museum features over 80 Corvettes in periodic settings, including mint classics, one-of-a-kind prototypes and modern-day wonders of engineering and design. Test your knowledge at interactive trivia kiosks, and don t miss the chance to try a Corvette on for size in our lobby where we have a 2018 Stingray waiting for you. Displays continually rotate so no two visits are the same. Round out your visit with a souvenir from the Corvette Store, grab a bite to eat in the Corvette Cafe, and race over to the NCM Motorsports Park to spectate or take a lap! Hopefully every Corvette owner is familiar with NCM and/or visited. If you haven't, a trip to Bowling Green, KY, needs to be on your bucket list. As part of NVCC's year long 50th Anniversary Celebration, NVCC is going to have a road trip to Bowling Green, NCM, NCM Motorsports Park, and Corvette Assembly Plant. If I can provide any NCM information, don't hesitate to ask. Dick HAM Hammaker

PAGE 13 FROM THE GREAT WHITE NORTH GLASS GAZETTE By: David DuBois I had forgotten that I would have to lock up my Corvette for weeks - months at a time up here. This has been a good year for skiers but a bad year for driving sports cars with summer only tires. I bought a battery tender. I start the Corvette every 2-3 weeks... and listen to the burble of the exhaust. Yes, I take tissues with me when I start it. The picture has me performing this very sad ceremony. 3rd Annual Coaches Symposium was held Sunday Jan 21st. This was another very well received event attended by 30 coaches. Significantly, 1/3 of them had 5 years or less experience. Attending was a regional chief Audi instructor and several other Audi coaches. OG Racing, SCCA, and many other groups were very well represented. You can look at the grades we received for our presentations were very good. Cassidy and Stewart presented and Paul played a major role in asking the large noisy group next door to sing a lot quieter. Save the date next year for the last Saturday in January so that I can also attend the NVCC Banquet. Events planned so far: I am registered for the NCM event at VIR in June, the NCM event at the Museum April 23 & 24, a Ferrari event at VIR March 12 & 13, a Ferrari event at WGI May 2 and 3rd. I am considering a Hooked on Driving event March 24 and 25th. The BIG ONE I am planning is a trip to Germany in Sept. to drive both the Nürburgring and the SPA. I am attending the Southern New York Region SCCA banquet Saturday night. I was a member many, many years ago. I am hoping to enlist their help with a Teen Driving School this spring or next fall. I am missing my many friends from NVCC, that is for sure.
