10 We have some major improvements to show off! Peter Riedel (OC Chairman Oberwiesenthal) If the organisers in the Saxonian town of Oberwiesenthal have proven one thing it s that they take matters in hand. Welcoming the Nordic Combined elite with an overhauled jumping hill in the last summer, there are some further improvements to be discovered for this year s edition, including sharing the date with the Continental Cup of Ladies Ski Jumping. After the modernisation of the jumping hill in the last year, extensive building activity was also taking place in Oberwiesenthal since the last Summer Grand Prix. Which novelties can spectators and teams look forward to? Peter Riedel: The next big construction work - a completely new installation of all fencing - will only happen after the Summer Grand Prix, as soon as we are getting clearance for the funding. But also for this summer, we have some major improvements to show off: a new cabin village with the changing cabins for example. Other highlights, especially for the spectators, will be a big party at the outrun of the hill on Friday and the winner presentation on the market square on Saturday. The Summer Grand Prix is getting under way one week later than usual this summer. Was this a challenge for the OC or does this date work even better? Riedel: If you would like to host an event of this size, you need a certain flexibility. We were happy to comply with the request by FIS if we could move our date to one week later. Unfortunately, the date if outside of the summer holidays in Saxonia now but maybe this is even a good thing, meaning that many sports-enthusiastic families are back from their holiday at this point. We have certainly communicated the change on all our channels and hope that we can welcome many spectators. Together with Oberstdorf, Oberwiesenthal is well-established as a Summer Grand Prix venue by now and has been on the calendar without break since Do you plan with the Summer Grand Prix in the long-term perspective? Riedel: We definitely plan with the Summer Grand Prix. The ski club in Oberwiesenthal has produced champions like Eric Frenzel and so this event is a highlight for the winter sports fans in the Erzgebirge-region. It s great to see the athletes live on location and not only on television. We would also very much like to be considered for other FIS events outside the Summer Grand Prix, for sure. How important is the Summer Grand Prix for the town of Oberwiesenthal? Riedel: This event definitely is one of the highlights of our summer - and the only Summer Grand Prix that is held in the state of Saxonia. The town and the region around!9

11 Oberwiesenthal is an important and crazy winter sports area, so it is quite natural that fans, guests and the organisers are counting down the days until the Summer Grand Prix. Another thing that is special in Oberwiesenthal is that the winner of the individual competition wins the Cafe König trophy including the legendary cake. A special kind of cooperation with a sponsor? Riedel: Well, any sponsor is special in their own way because who choses to support an event confirms that they believe in it. But it is definitely a great thing that our partners at the Café König give this special touch to our prize giving ceremony. I m sure it s also special for the athletes. It s not every day that a victory is sweetened like that - in the literal sense! (laughs)!10

17 An international event in Montafon always means competition and party! Thomas Amann (OC Tschagguns/Partenen) The venue of Tschagguns and Partenen in Austria s Montafon region is the newcomer on the Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix calender. OC President Tomas Amann on what makes the venue special and reveals some more details on what athletes and spectators can expect in early September. You are replacing Villach on this year s Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix calendar. How did this come to be? Thomas Amann: We were very happy when the Austrian Ski Federation approached us. The ÖSV and also FIS were satisfied with our good work in the past years. We have longstanding experience with the Boardercross World Cup and other big event like the European Youth Festival (EYOF) 2015 and in the next winter, the Audi FIS Skicross World Cup will take place here. Of course we are excited to host a third top-level competition in the year of 2015 in the Montafon region. After the Nordic Combined Alpencup and the EYOF, the Summer Grand Prix is the next level of international Nordic Combined competitions which take place in Tschagguns and Partenen. A positive step for the venue? Amann: Absolutely! On the one side, this proves how sustainable our sporting facilities are which can not only be used in the winter but also in the summer time. So basically, we re an all-year-round venue, the place and the organising committee have proven themselves. On the other side, to organise a competition on such short notice was a challenge we liked to take up very much. As we can see from the calendar entry, the competitions are hosted by the two villages of Tschagguns and Partenen. How exactly will this work in practice? Amann: The jumping part of the event will be held on the new jumping hill in the Montafon Nordic Centre in Tschagguns. After that, we go further into the Montafon region, to Partenen. The roller-skiing competition will be held on public roads which will be closed for traffic for this purpose. The athletes will go four laps of 2.5 km which means they will be really close to the spectators who will have the chance to see the athletes multiple times during the competitions and be in the thick of the competition. This will certainly create a very special, very exciting atmosphere.!16

18 What will athletes and spectators be able to look forward to? Amann: I believe the athletes and spectators will see exciting competitons on very modern sporting facilities with international flair. We have a great number of very motivated volunteers without whom we couldn t host such an event. To make the spectators lives easier, we have established a shuttle service which will pick up the audience at the Montafon Nordic Centre and the parking lot at the Zamang train and take them to Partenen and back in the evening. We hope this will help to get even more people on location. And we will of course also have a big After-Party in Partenen which everybody can look forward to. A World Cup-level event in Montafon always means competition AND party! After the prize giving ceremony, we will have a live concert at the venue. And the entry is free, by the way, for the competitions and the concert! Is the Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix something that could also be interesting for the future for your venue? Amann: Very definitely yes. As I mentioned, we have the respective sporting facilities and the Know-How to host events of this size. A third international-level event, especially in the summer time, is very interesting for us from the touristic point of view. It is our wish to host the Summer Grand Prix at the Montafon in the long run.!17

Stefan Huber (OC Oberstdorf) Summer Grand Prix in Oberstdorf means night races, many spectators in stadium and on the track and youth and elite athletes coming together in one place for an international face-off at the beloved venue in Germany s south. OC General Secretary Stefan Huber on the Tour-de-France -feeling during the roller-ski races, local hero Johannes Rydzek and all news concerning the FIS Youth Summer Grand Prix. Many athletes love Oberstdorf because of the Tour-de-France -feeling on the roller-ski track with the many spectators watching the race on location. What makes Oberstdorf so popular for the audience? Stefan Huber: The biggest draw is the world elite of the Nordic Combined sport who come together for the Summer Grand Prix. But of course the general set-up is also quite ideal: a night race on an illuminated track, rapid downhills and steep uphills and the spectators can watch both, the ski jumping event and the roller-ski race from the stadium as we transform the jumping arena into a roller-ski track right after the jumping event. In addition to that, we have a compact and entertaining competition schedule and an entertainment program in the stadium. Local hero Johannes Rydzek has won in Oberstdorf unbelievable seven times in the past few years, at least once per year since Is this also a main reason for the attraction of the event? Huber: Johannes definitely has a special place in the spotlight for the spectator and now, as a double-world Champion I imagine this will be even more the case. But we are also very proud of our spectators. The visitors, be it people from the region or tourists are very much interested in sports and very fair. Every athlete is cheered on and everybody wants to see close fights and intense competitions. The best athletes should be on the podium and if our local top athletes Johannes Rydzek is among them, of course everybody is a little more excited. In this year s Summer Grand Prix, Oberstdorf will host a premiere: the Nordic Combined Committee is testing the adjustment of the metre value from 1.5 to 1.8 points on large hills and Oberstdorf will be the first place where this rule change is explored. What do you expect as organisers? Huber: On the one hand, it is important that the starting field will not be spread out too much after the jumping part but on the other hand, the performance in the jumping event has to be valued properly, so the sport is balanced. That s what Nordic Combined is about. We are also very excited to see how the rule change will work and what effect it will have.!23

25 We hope it will lead to even more exciting fights which will make Nordic Combined even more interesting. The FIS Youth Summer Grand Prix will be held at the same time as the regular Summer Grand Prix again, as it has become a tradition in the last couple of years. How did this event develop and what will it offer to spectators complimentary to the SGP? Huber: Participation in the Youth Summer Grand Prix has steadily grown in the last years and many nations use this opportunity for an international comparison. With the addition of Ladies Nordic Combined to the program in the last year, another important step was taken and I think many of the involved people were quite astonished to see on which level the girls already are. To ensure the smooth running of the competition and all activities, we had to limit the number of participants for the first time this year. It is the biggest international youth event in Nordic Combined in the summertime and it s always a great pleasure to get together young athletes and the world elite in Oberstdorf. For the young athletes, it is great motivation to see their idols live and up close. What else is new in Oberstdorf this year? Huber: Actually, there are multiple things. In the Youth Summer Grand Prix, we will use our newly modernised HS 60 hill which we finished and inaugurated just now, at the 31st of July. The Youth Grand Prix will be its first international competition. Also new is that the girls will also compete on roller-skis this year after we tested their abilities on inline skates last year. And if you re interested in seeing high-level sports before that, the German national championships in Nordic Combined and Ladies s Ski Jumping will take place in Oberstdorf from the 21st - 23rd of August.!24
