CHAPTER F CAVALRY NEWS September 2017 REGION H FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS ** Special meeting day/time for September due to Labor Day. Join us Tuesday, Sept 5 th. 6:00 PM to eat 7:00 PM to meet and mingle SEE YOU THERE!
FROM YOUR CHAPTER DIRECTOR-LOUIS & PAM WOFFORD IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! Chapter F's September Gathering will be postponed by one day! Because the "first Monday" falls on Labor Day, Chapter F's gathering at Western Sizzlin' will be held on TUESDAY, September 5th. Greetings, F-Troopers! I don't know about you, but August has been a busy month for Pam & I, and the month seems to have flown by. As I write this, we are preparing to leave for Grapevine, TX and Wing Ding '39; hoping Hurricane Harvey doesn't mess up everyone's week down there. This will be only the second Wing Ding we have attended, and we've been looking forward to it for months. We pre-registered for seminar classes on things like Team Riding, Membership Enhancement, Co-Rider, Director's Forum and a two-session, all-day course on Trailering, which we are suddenly very interested in, having recently bought our first trailer. (Riding the range course pulling a trailer should be interesting... :-) We also anticipate exciting performances by several competing Drill Teams, seeing an illuminating Light Parade and riding in the Grand Parade on Saturday morning... There will be a lot to do each day, and we know we won't be able to do it all. Oh, yeah, there will be vendors to visit, too! I'm getting tired just thinking about all of that. Luckily, this year's event is at one of the biggest, most fantastic resort hotels in the area, so there will be no commuting necessary. If Hurricane Harvey brings rain, we may not even notice. We hope to see some of you there! Meanwhile, back in home: We were sad to learn of the recent passing of Rocky Swope, who was the Assistant Director of Oklahoma Chapter "M". Rocky was a friend to everyone he met and who's presence will be missed by everyone. Rocky was laid to rest on August 19th. On that same day, folks here in Arkansas gathered to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of Chapter F. We were pleased to have a good turn-out for our picnic and games at the brand new Barling City Park. Pam's clipboard shows thirty-seven folks attended, and our head count indicated that number was pretty close. Mother Nature gave us a little break on the heat. A light breeze periodically came and went, allowing us to enjoy our burgers and brats, play some games and visit with folks from Chapter B and Chapter C who rode in to join the fun.
We were honored to have Richard & Vicki Austin, Arkansas's District Directors, join us. Along with Terry and Paula Saulters from Chapter C, they got up early and rode hard from Cabot, AR to be here, then braved the afternoon heat to ride back home. I applaud their effort to support our chapter's celebration! Really... It would have been much easier for them to have stayed home in the A/C. Thanks, Richard & Vicki! Similarly, we were amazed and pleased to see Renee and Bruce Armentrout arrive about half-way through the day! This was special because Renee was just released from the hospital, having had a full knee replacement only a couple of days before! We had just finished explaining why Bruce and Renee were not there, and mentioning her in a prayer, when lo and behold, they pulled up and joined in! We're now wishing Renee continued success with her recovery. She has had a rough time the past couple of years with this bum knee, but better times lie ahead, I'm sure.! Thanks also to Shirl and Larry Parnell, Barbara and Joe Milton and Jim & Dona Watson for helping with planning and bringing the games. Special thanks to Clint Smith for slaving over three hot grills to cook for everyone. All the food was delicious and well prepared! Those who could not be there missed the rare opportunity to whack a motorcycle-shaped piñata, pitch horse shoes, play hillbilly golf and engage in our highlight event: "Roadkill Pickup", a test of skill dreamed up by our entertainment director, Shirl. (It must be scary for Shirl to go to sleep at night, if she dreams about things like that often.) You'd have to see it to understand, but one by one, bikes & trikes, each with a rider and co-rider made a slow pass down the road in front of the park, so the co-rider could attempt to pick up a series of "critters" using long-reach tongs. The tricky bit was hanging onto all of your critters to the end of the line... Thankfully, the critters were stuffed, plush toys, and there are a number of creative ways they can be corralled long enough to meet the requirements of this challenge. A special drawing ticket was awarded for each critter the team brought back to the Roadkill Monitors, Shirl and Kim. The winner of the Roadkill Pickup drawing received a $10 gift card from Western Sizzlin'. We will probably do this again at a future event. It was good fun. As the party drew to a close, we gave away Door Prizes, including a new HTC helmet, a pair of intercom headsets, several gift cards, flashlights, tool sets and other items too numerous to list. A good time was had by all, I believe, but no one seemed happier than John Jones, from Chapter B, who won more door prizes than anyone else, including a magnificent decorative pillow which proclaimed "It s Good to be Queen". He was a good sport and let us take his photo with the pillow, so be sure to harass / congratulate him on his good fortune every chance you get, from now on. We want to remind everyone of a few upcoming events in our area:
September 9th: Chapter B invites everyone to their Rally / Picnic at Lake Fort Smith Park. Eleven members of Chapter B came down for our Anniversary Picnic. We should all try to show up for theirs! There is a $10 fee per person, which covers all the food, drinks and accessories. They are making it easy for us. Just bring yourself and a $10 bill. September 23: Sunrise Honda in Searcy, AR will host "Customer Appreciation Day" - with food and drinks for those who attend. We hope to have a group ride down for this. Will talk about this at our Gathering Sept. 5th. September 28-30: Oklahoma District hosts their Rally in Muskogee, OK at the Convention Center, downtown. This is always a well organized event, presented by a nice group of folks. September 30: Arkansas Chapter D Rally at Lake Frierson State Park. I have no first-hand knowledge of this event, but Kieth and Mary Jo Cooper, Directors of Chapter D, are two of the nicest, hardest-working folks we know in GWRRA. I am sure they will host a fun event. October 14: Arkansas District hosts the annual Memorial Picnic at Burns Park in Little Rock. A group from F Troop rides to this even each year, which has always been fun. The past few years they have had a Chili Cookoff, with each attending Chapter bringing a pot of chili to be judged and then eaten. This year they are having a Bean Cookoff, where each chapter brings a pot of some kind of beans to judge and eat. This could be an interesting event! IF YOU HAVE A FABULOUS BEAN RECIPE, SPEAK UP! WE MAY WANT YOUR RECIPE TO REPRESENT OUR CHAPTER. :-) November 3-4: Region H Fall Ride-In, from Van Buren to Marble Falls, AR. We have talked about this the past few months at our Gatherings and hope many of you can join us and folks from other states in Region H (Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas) who journey all the way here to enjoy riding in our hills during the Fall season. The group will begin arriving in Van Buren Thursday evening, and some plan to take the train ride to Winslow on Friday. Others will arrive Friday evening and have an evening gathering in the parking lot of the host hotel, Best Western Hotel at 1903 North 6th St. Saturday morning the ride will depart from this location, taking a scenic route through the hills to "The Hub" resort hotel at Marble Falls, where the group will have dinner and spend the night. If you would like be a part of this, call and reserve a room at The Hub ASAP. If you like Prime Rib, when you reserve your room, tell them you want prime rib for dinner Saturday night, as they may not have enough to serve you otherwise. Folks claim it is excellent! This will be a fun group ride! Don't miss it! CHAPTER F ANNIVERSARY PICNIC

LET US HEAR FROM YOU!
We want to schedule regular Saturday morning rides... But conflicts with work, family, Mother Nature and other things make it difficult to plan in advance. We need someone (or two) with free time to plan and lead rides, so others can join in when they can. ANYONE willing to try would be appreciated. Talk to Louis or Pam - send an or call. 9 Riding in a Group Whether you ride as an individual or in a group, in order to survive on the open road your riding habits and techniques must be constantly thought of as defensive. When you ride in a group, your actions not only affect you, but the other riders as well. Therefore, it is important to recognize and remember that riding in a group is a team effort. To be safe, you must rely on the cooperation and coordination of all riders in the group. Before the group departs for the ride, determine who will lead and who will tail gun, as well as the skill level and experience of all the riders. The lead bike will ride to the level of least skilled rider. Determine what CB channel you will use, what route you will take, and predetermined stops and if anyone has any medical issues or other special needs that would require extra stops. Go over hand signals for those who do not have a CB. Each rider in the group is responsible for yourself and your co rider. Each rider is responsible for the safe operation of your bike so you do not endanger anyone or other vehicles on the road. Leader and tail gunner should both be experienced riders and work together to keep the group in formation, coordinated and safe. The main function of the tail gunner is to insure the group keeps a safe following distance from one to the other and keeps the group together. Tail gunner will keep the group tight in traffic as to prevent other vehicles from cutting into the formation. Tail gunner also assists the lead bike in lane changes by securing the lane first then informing the lead bike it is safe for the group to move. Lead bike moves the group into the secured lane together. When we ride as a group sometimes the tail gunner will look ahead of the leader and can see that a lane change is coming and secures the lane before the leader will request a lane change. Tail gunner will also assist anyone who has stopped or has to fall behind for any reason and also keeps an eye on the traffic behind the group, especially when the group is making any stops or turns. Lead bike looks for hazards in the roadway, slow vehicles, vehicles off the side of the road and other obstacles that may impede the progress of the group. Lead bike will also inform the group of stops up ahead, any turns along the way and any speed limit adjustments. Lead bike is responsible for getting the group to its destination. When on a narrow or twisting road, the leader will inform the group to single up and ride your own ride. Do not let your ego go beyond your riding capability by trying to stay with a more experienced rider; the group will not abandon you. Ride your own ride and do not go any faster than you feel comfortable going. The second bike in the group is an important position also because the lead bike is sometimes focused on where the group is going and may not see a hazard or other vehicles approaching. Therefore, the second bike becomes another pair of eyes. In normal group riding the formation will be staggered. Follow the 2 second rule (keep at least 2 seconds in front and behind). When coming to an intersection the leader may call for the group to double up in order to get everyone through the turn. If there are two turn lanes the group may use both lanes to get through as well. The roadway is divided up into 3 tracks (left, center and right); when making turns at the intersection remember to stay in your own track, avoid straying into the other track. Remember to arrive early for the ride with a full tank of gas and an empty bladder. Be certain your bike is in safe and reliable operating condition. Be prepared for weather and emergencies, carry that first aid kit. Ride safe and have fun.

FROM YOUR TECHNICAL DIRECTOR BRUCE ARMENTROUT This is for GL1800 motorcycles. Sorry not sure how to do the test with a trike since it does not have a side stand. This may help you self-diagnose a Fault. If FI (Fault Indicator) light comes on pull over but DO NOT shut bike off. Put in neutral and put side stand down, RPM s below This signals the ECM to send the error code to the FI light. Count the number of long and short flashes. This will give you the error code. If you shut the bike off the error code is lost - sort of. It will be retained in the ECM but it is harder to get out. If the bike stops and the will not restart you can get the FI light to flash the error code by cranking the engine for 10 seconds. The FI light will then flash the error code.
