Coach Flo has made three trips to the WNIT during her time as a head coach, twice making the quarterfinals. She is 8-2 in the WNIT. She took Georgetown to the quarters in 2009 and Auburn in Auburn is making its fifth overall appearance in the WNIT (2003, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014) with an overall record of The Tigers won the tournament in 2003, made the third round in 2007, lost in the second round in 2011 and reached the quarterfinals last season. Auburn will be going for program win number 850 against Mississippi State. The Tigers will square off against Mississippi State for the third time this season and 51st time in the history of the two programs, and the third time this season. Auburn holds a advantage in the series vs. the Bulldogs, and won both meetings in Auburn has never played Mississippi State in the postseason (WNIT or NCAA Tournament). Auburn defeated Mississippi State in the first meeting this season in Starkville, coming back from 13 points down for the win on Jan. 5, In the second game, at Auburn Arena, the Tigers won Auburn has hit school high s in the WNIT in the game against Old Dominion -- assists (29, which are also a WNIT record in a single game), field goals made (35) and blocks (10). Feb. 9, 2014 W Auburn Auburn Women s Basketball Quick Hitters Terri Williams-Flournoy is 8-2 in the WNIT as a head coach with two quarterfinal trips -- one with Auburn in 2013 and one with Georgetown in Tyrese Tanner has led in Auburn in scoring in every victory for Auburn throughout the season with the exception of three games. Tra cee Tanner paced Auburn in scoring in the win over Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament and vs. Jacksonville State, and Brandy Montgomery led the team vs. Ball State with 17 points. The Tigers are 20-2 when playing in Auburn during the postseason. Auburn posted a WNIT record 29 assists vs. Old Dominion in its second-round game. The team had 29 assists on 35 baskets. Tyrese Tanner earned first-team All-SEC honors, after finishing the regular season with a 17.0 ppg average and ranking third in the SEC. She is Auburn s first first-team honoree since Alli Smalley in The Tigers placed two on the SEC All-Defensive team -- Tanner and Hasina Muhammad. Muhammad ranks second in the league in steals and fourth in blocks. Brandy Montgomery earned a spot on the SEC s All-Freshman team after starting 31 games and averaging 11.4 ppg. Auburn has matched the final win total from a year ago (19-15 overall, quarterfinals of the WNIT in 2013). Auburn s roster features eight newcomers this season - six freshmen and two junior college transfers. Those players have recorded 65 starts this year. Auburn s freshmen have led the Tigers in scoring in 17 of 33 games this season. The Tigers rank 16th nationally in steals per game, averaging 10.3, and lead the SEC. AU was picked 8th in the preseason SEC polls by both the media and the coaches, but earned a No. 6-seed in the SEC Tournament. Against Alabama on Feb. 27, Auburn battled back from 17 points down to defeat Alabama, 70-65, in double overtime at Auburn Arena. It was the largest comeback by the Tigers since 2006 versus Western Michigan. Auburn won four SEC games this season in comeback fashion. Auburn erased halftime deficits to knock off Misssissippi State, twice, Arkansas in Fayetteville and then forced double-overtime to come back from 17 down against Alabama. Tyrese Tanner has led Auburn in scoring each of the last three seasons and is one of just six Auburn players ever to lead the team in scoring in three-straight seasons. Tyrese Tanner is just one of two Auburn players in school history with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals and 100 blocks. Auburn s schedule featured 13 opponents playing in the postseason. Hasina Muhammad attempted her first career dunk against St. John s... she missed. TOURNAMENT TIME Auburn has posted an 13-3 record in the WNIT, and 2014 marks its fifth appearance in the tournament. The Tigers won the WNIT in 2003 and reached the quarterfinals in This is the second straight appearance for Auburn and the third overall for head coach Terri Williams- Flournoy. TOUGH SCHEDULE The Tigers played a challenging nonconference schedule during the regular season, with six out of 13 games played against teams that have advanced to the postseason. Tennessee-Chattanooga, Iowa State and St. John s were selected for the NCAA Tournament, while Ball State, Tulane and Minnesota are playing in the WNIT. Additionally, with eight SEC teams in the NCAA Tournament and another three in the WNIT, Auburn will have played 19 of its 31 regular season games against postseason caliber teams. HOME SWEET HOME Auburn is 11-5 when playing at home this season and is 26-9 at Auburn Arena in the Coach Flo Era. Overall, the Tigers are in their home facility. SCOUTING AUBURN The Auburn women s basketball team, under direction of second-year head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, entered the season with five returning letterwinners and three starters (Tyrese Tanner, Hasina Muhammad and Tra cee Tanner) from last season s team that went (5-11 SEC) and advanced to the quarterfinals of the WNIT. AU has eight first-year players on the roster, four of which have started in games this season. Auburn has posted a record of overall and finished SEC play with a 7-9 mark. Three Tigers are averaging double figures, led by senior Tyrese Tanner with 17.2 per game (3rd SEC), freshman Brandy Montgomery (11.4 ppg) and sophomore Tra Cee Tanner (10.7 ppg). Tyrese Tanner pulls down a team-high 6.5 boards per game. The Auburn defense is averaging 19.3 forced turnovers per game while tallying 10.3 steals per game. REPPING THE SEC For the first time since the season, Auburn has a member on the All- SEC first team. Tyrese Tanner, the league s third-leading scorer was named first-team All-SEC on Tuesday. She was also tabbed to the SEC All-Defensive team, along with fellow defender Hasina Muhammad, who ranks second in the conference in steals per game and fourth in blocks. In her first year on the squad, guard Brandy Montgomery was named to SEC All-freshman team. She averages 11.4 points per contest, which ranks fourth among her freshmen peers. IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS In the March 25 NCAA statistical rankings, Auburn is ranked in the top 100 in six categories: 16th in steals (10.3 spg), 27th in blocked shots (4.9 bpg), 70th in scoring defense (63.2 ppg), 78th in turnover margin (+2.09), 81st in rebound margin (+3.7) and 71st in assists per game (15.1 apg). MARKED IMPROVEMENT Auburn was picked to finish eighth in the league, but pulled out the No. 6-seed in this year s SEC Tournament. She helped lead Auburn to a double--overtime win over Alabama with 19 second-half points, 26 for the game. This season, Tanner has surpassed 20 points on 10 occasions. 1,000-POINT CLUB With her 19 points at Alabama A&M, senior Tyrese Tanner became the 28th Auburn player ever to score 1,000 career points. She currently ranks 10th all-time at Auburn with 1,504 points. Junior Hasina Muhammad needs just one point to become the 29th player in school history with a 1,000 career points. LAST TIME OUT FOR AUBURN The Auburn women s basketball team used 51 percent shooting for the game to put on a dominating performance both offensively and defensively, beating Old Dominion 82-59, Monday evening to advance to the third round of the WNIT. The Tigers shot 58 percent in the second half to stretch their lead to as many as 25 late in the second half over the Lady Monarchs. Leading the team in scoring for the 24th time this season, Tyrese Tanner posted 24 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the field. It was her eighth 20-point performance of the season and 18th of her career. She was one of five Tigers in double digits against ODU with fellow senior Peyton Davis with 12 points, followed by 11 from freshman Katie Frerking and Tra Cee Tanner and Brandy Montgomery with 10 each. Auburn set a WNIT record 29 assists on 35 made shots. Auburn was dominant in almost every category, outscoring ODU in the paint, and getting 29 points from bench play. AU posted a 42 rebounds to Old Dominion s 30 on the boards. The Tigers defense forced 20 turnovers and capitalized with 29 points off miscues. The game was a close one in the first half with a stretch of runs by each team keeping the score within a possession. Ty Tanner hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Auburn a two point lead at the half, The Lady Monarchs stayed in the game behind early behind their three-point shooting, hitting five in the first half and nine for the game. COMEBACK KIDS Against Alabama, Auburn came back from 17 points down to defeat the Crimson Tide. It was the largest deficit the Tigers Every Player, Every Play, Every Day had faced and won. This season, Auburn has won four SEC games where they trailed at halftime. Against Mississippi State in Starkville, the Bulldogs had a 13-point lead on Auburn, which they erased for an win. In wins against Arkansas in Fayetteville and MSU at home, Auburn trailed by 8 at halftime. STANDOUT CLASS The Tigers freshmen class has made a big impact already this season as the class has led the team in scoring in 17 of 33 games. In SEC play, the freshmen outscored the other classes in 11 of the 18 games. The youngsters outpaced the rest of the classes in both games during the SEC Tournament. IN MARCH Auburn is all-time in the month of March and 3-2 in 2014 (records begin in season, not all dates provided prior to or during that season). KEEPING SCORE The Tigers forced more turnovers than opponent field goals on14 occasions this season and 31 times in the Coach Flo era, Auburn opponents have had more turnovers than made field goals. Against Old Dominion, the Lady Monarchs had 20 turnovers and only 19 made field goals. EXCLUSIVE CLUB Senior Tyrese Tanner has flourished under Coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, becoming a force on both ends of the court the last three years. Her all-around game is close to putting her in exclusive company in the Auburn record books. She is just the second Auburn player ever with 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals and 100 blocks. Entering the WNIT, she has 1,504 points, 571 rebounds, 171 assists, 184 steals and 125 blocks. The only other player to accomplish the feat is DeWanna Bonner ( ). TANDEM FROSH Auburn has started two freshmen in nine out of 33 games this season. Among those starters have been Brandy Montgomery with 31, Meagan Tucker with 5 and Katie Frerking with 5. When Frerking and Montgomery started vs. Jacksonville State on Nov. 13, it was the first time Auburn started two freshmen since Tyrese Tanner and Courtney Strain on Nov. 27, TOP FROSH Freshman Brandy Montgomery has established herself in the Auburn starting lineup and has been a consistent presence for the Tigers. The native of Port St. Lucie, Fla., has scored in double figures in 24 of 33 games, with a season-high of 22 points against LSU. She is currently second on the team with 11.4 points per game and also ranks fourth among freshmen in the SEC. She was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. Her 22 points are the most for an Auburn freshman since Tra Cee Tanner scored 21 points last season against Jacksonville. They are the most against an SEC opponent since Hasina Muhammad scored 20 against Florida in the 2012 SEC Tournament and are the most in an SEC game since KeKe Carrier scored 26 at Georgia on Feb. 26, HISTORIC MISS With less than two minutes left in the game vs. St. John s, freshman Brandy Montgomery picked up a steal at midcourt and flipped it up to junior Hasina Muhammad. On the break, Muhammad decided to do what no Auburn women s basketball player has done before - attempt a slam dunk. She missed. The ball came off the back of the rim, but Muhammad put an exclamation point on the Tigers big win over the Red Storm. SPREADING THE WEALTH Four times this season, Auburn has put five players in double figures in a game, including the second-round WNIT matchup against Old Dominion (Tyrese Tanner, Tra Cee Tanner, Peyton Davis, Katie Frerking and Brandy Montgomery). The Tigers had five in double digits against Tulane, at Mississippi State and on the road against Florida. BACKCOURT Auburn s defense made team history in the season-opener as the Tigers forced a 10-second backcourt violation on Georgia Southern at the 10:24 mark of the second half. This is the first year for the 10-second backcourt rule in women s college basketball.
