2 GSC MEN S BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (for the week ending 11/16/10) WEEK 1 EAST DIVISION Valdosta State guard Tristan Steele (JR, 6-3, 189, Savannah, GA) captured his first-ever accolade after guiding the Blazers to a 2-1 home mark versus in-region foes in its opening week. The junior averaged 23.7 points and 3.0 assists in 37.0 minutes, while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor and 51.4 percent from three-point range. He led VSU with 22 points in 37 minutes as the Blazers lost their season opener to Saint Leo, Valdosta State bounced back the next night, upsetting No. 17 Rollins at home behind Steele s game-high 26 points and his 8-for-14 performance from beyond the arc. The Savannah, GA native capped the week by leading all players with 23 points thanks to a 6-for-9 three-point effort in an triumph over Fort Valley State. WEST DIVISION Christian Brothers guard Scott Dennis (JR, 6-5, 180, Cincinnati, OH) earns his first-ever honor after leading CBU to a 3-0 start via three wins over in-region foes. The junior averaged a double-double behind 17.0 points and 14.7 rebounds in 39.3 minutes, while shooting 53.7 percent from the field. Dennis logged double-double in all three games, starting with an 11-point, 12-rebound effort versus Lane. Next, he led the Bucs to a home triumph over LeMoyne-Owen via a team-high 20 points and a game-best 17 boards. The Cincinnati, OH native wrapped up the week, leading all players with 20 points and 15 rebounds in a home triumph over GSC East Division foe West Georgia. 3 GSC MEN S BASKETBALL TEAM CAPSULES WEEK 1 #21 ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE (3-0, 0-0) The Chargers are off to a red-hot start, winning their first three games. They came from behind to beat 6th-ranked Florida Southern, then followed that with a win over Eckerd at the GSC/SSC Challenge in Valdosta, Ga. The weekend was capped off with a convincing blowout of Columbus State on Monday night. Senior forward Srdan Boskovic had a career-high 20 points to lead UAH in the win over Florida Southern. He was near-perfect from the field, hitting 6-of-7 field goals, including all four of his 3-point attempts. He was also 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Zane Campbell had 20 to pace the Chargers in the win over Eckerd. He was 7-for-14 from the field with three 3-pointers. He also perfect at the freethrow line, hitting all three of his attempts. Josh Magette led five players in double-figures in the win over Columbus State. Magette was nearly perfect from the field, hitting 10-of-11 shots, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range. He finished with a game-high 26 points and eight assists. For the week, Campbell averaged 17 points and six rebounds to lead UAH. He was 22-for-35 from the field and 5-for-11 from downtown. ARKANSAS-MONTICELLO (0-0, 0-0) The Boll Weevils are set to open the season this Wednesday on the road against Centenary College. In its lone exhibition contest of the season, UAM hung with North Texas for a final score of In that loss, junior LA Farmer led UAM with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds, while junior teammate Ricardo Hall added 21 points. UAM shot 38 percent from the field in the loss, including an 40 percent output in the second half. ARKANSAS TECH (1-0, 0-0) The 13th-ranked Wonder Boys opened its season with an impressive home win over Ozark Christian on Monday night. The 116 points are the most scored by a Tech team in an opener in school history. The game marked the debut of first-year Tech head coach Doug Karleskint. Karleskint became the first Tech men s basketball coach to win his coaching debut since 1987 when former coach Marty Barnes opened his Tech tenure with a win over Philander Smith. In the win over OCC, seven Wonder Boys reached double figures, including junior guard Johnie Davis leading the way with 22 points, while freshman guard Ricky Allen added 14 points, five assists and five steals in 13 minutes of action off the bench. For the game, Tech forced 29 turnovers and had a 3-to-1 assist to turnover ratio (8 turnovers/26 assists) and Tech held a 39-2 edge in points off turnovers and shot 56 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line. The Wonder Boys will play at Drury on Wednesday, before returning home to face Lambuth on Saturday and Ecclesia College on Monday to close out its second week of action. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS (3-0, 0-0) The Bucs opened their season with an extremely busy weekend, playing three South Region games in four days. They opened the season with a win over Lane Friday night. Saturday, they won over LeMoyne-Owen, and a Monday night win over West Georgia wrapped up the weekend. Scott Dennis averaged 17 ppg, 14.7 rpg, and 3.7 apg in the three games. Zack Warner averaged 16.3 ppg, including 30 points against Lane, and 5.7 rpg. This week, the Bucs visit Northern Kentucky Friday night, and they face Cincinnati-Clermont Saturday at NKU. They will wrap up the week Tuesday night against Lambuth. DELTA STATE (1-2, 0-0) Delta State has posted a record of 1-2 to begin the season. The Statesmen opened up season play at the Sunshine State Conference/Gulf South Conference Challenge in Valdosta, Ga., dropping their season opener to Rollins College, 82-70, despite a 20-point and six assist performance from senior transfer Chris Poellnitz. The Statesmen dropped game two of the weekend tournament to Saint Leo University, Poellnitz again had a strong performance, posting 21 points and four rebounds versus the Lions. He is currently leading DSU in scoring, averaging 20 points per game. The Statesmen wrapped up game three on the schedule as they defeated Victory University, 96-79, Tuesday in Memphis, Tenn. Senior transfer Jamarkus Holt paced the Statesmen with 21 points and 26 rebounds, which tied the school record for rebounds in a game. The Statesmen grabbed an impressive 77 rebounds in the win. Delta State will face Shepherd Tech in their home opener on November 23 at Walter Sillers Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. HARDING (2-0, 0-0) The Harding men opened the season with a pair of victories at the Christian Brothers Conference Challenge. Both wins came against NCAA South Region foes from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Harding opened with an win over LeMoyne-Owen on Friday. Junior forward Kirk Porter hit a layup as time expired in regulation to send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Harding hit 7-of-9 free throws to pull away. Kevin Brown led Harding with 19 points and nine rebounds. Stephen Blake had 17 points and four assists. The Bisons made nine three-pointers in the first half and defeated Lane on Saturday. Blake had 14 points and seven assists, and Porter added 14 points and seven rebounds. Harding also won its first two games last season, en route to starting the season 4-0. HENDERSON STATE (0-1, 0-0) Henderson State committed 20 turnovers as the Reddies lost its season opener to Incarnate Word 96-71, Saturday in San Antonio, TX. The Reddies could not slow down the up-tempo Cardinals as the home team scored 28 points off of Henderson miscues. Zech Smith led Henderson State with 16 points, while Josh French added 14. Also scoring in double-figures for the Reddies were Jeff Shelton with 12 points, and KaJuan Watson with 10. The Reddies, 0-1 on the season, converted on 26-of-54 shot from the field for a decent 48 percent, but Incarnate Word hit 36of-67 shots for 54 percent. Shelton led the Reddies in rebounding with 10 to open the year with a double-double, while Marland Johnson had seven rebounds. The Reddies will play their home opener Thursday, Nov. 18 against North Alabama with the opening tip scheduled for 25 minutes following the women s game which is set for 6 p.m. at the Duke Wells Center. NORTH ALABAMA (0-2, 0-0) North Alabama opened the season with a pair of losses over the weekend at the GSC/SSC Challenge on the campus of Valdosta State. Against both Eckerd and Florida Southern, the Lions suffered second-half scoring droughts that they could not overcome. Eckerd used a 13-0 run late in the second half to grab a doubledigit lead and maintained control down the stretch to post an victory over UNA on Friday. The loss overshadowed a career-game by UNA s Nick Luttrell, who led all scorers with 29 points. The junior from Spring Hill, Tenn., did most of his damage from the free throw line, hitting 17-of-21 from the charity stripe. He added six field goals and also led the team in rebounding with six for the game. Ricky Davison also had 14 points for UNA. On Saturday, fifth-ranked Florida Southern began the second half on a 22-6 run to turn a seven-point half-time advantage into a big lead and never looked back. Warrick Mastin led the Lions with 15 points on the day. Beaumont Beasley also reached double figures in scoring with 11 points while Luttrell pulled down 15 rebounds. UNA will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., for its next two games. 4 GSC MEN S BASKETBALL TEAM CAPSULES WEEK 1 OUACHITA BAPTIST (0-0, 0-0) Ouachita Baptist opens the season this week, hosting a pair of GSC East Division foes. The Tigers face #21 Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday night before battling North Alabama on Friday night. Both games are set for 8:00 pm tips. SOUTHERN ARKANSAS (2-0, 0-0) Southern Arkansas got off to a 2-0 start to the 2010 season with a last-second win over Dallas Baptist Saturday, and then trouncing Champion Baptist Monday, with both games in Magnolia. Senior guard Channin Harden dropped in two free throws with one second remaining to lift the Muleriders past Dallas Baptist. SAU held a lead at the half. Junior guard Chase Spruiell scored a game-high 19 points in the contest, senior forward Justin Stuart added 12 points before fouling out, and Harden and junior forward Casey Cheshier chipped in 10 apiece, with Cheshier also sharing game-high honors with six rebounds. Southern Arkansas reached the century mark for the first time in six years with the blowout of Champion Baptist. The Muleriders dominated the game in outscoring the Tigers in the paint and 60-6 in bench scoring. They held a advantage at the half. Senior forward Jermydrell Burton and sophomore forward Zach Prothro had game-highs with 17 points apiece, freshman forward Shumeecio Lark added 13 points, and Stuart had 11. Spruiell pulled down a game-high seven rebounds, and junior guard Rico Lambert dished out seven assists. SAU had 17 steals in the game, with Burton netting five. Southern Arkansas is off until hosting Southeastern Oklahoma State November 23. VALDOSTA STATE (2-1, 0-0) Valdosta State opened the season with a 2-1 record as the Blazers fell to Saint Leo in the season opener before rebounding for a upset of No. 17 Rollins and an defeat of Fort Valley State. Junior transfer Tristan Steele led the Blazers as he averaged 23.7 points a game while hitting 18-of-35 threes over the three-game stretch. Steele scored more than 20 points in all three games, including 26 in the upset of Rollins on Saturday. Billy McShepard opened the year with three straight double-doubles as he tallied 15 points and a career-best 18 rebounds against SLU, 11 points and 11 boards versus Rollins and 14 points and 12 rebounds against Fort Valley State. Mc- Shepard only tallied one double-double in all of , his first year with the Blazers. Three Blazers tallied double-doubles in the FVSU game as Will Alston finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Kevin Harris had 16 points and a career-high 11 assists. Sophomore transfer Josh Sparks was nearly perfect in his first three games as a Blazer as he connected on 16 of his 17 shots in the three games. He hit all six shots against Saint Leo and three versus Rollins as well as his first five against Fort Valley State. After having a shot blocked on his sixth attempt versus the Wildcats, he connected on his final two attempts of the game. WEST ALBAMA (2-1, 0-0) The Tigers opened the season with a 2-1 week that saw a pair of victories at home and a road loss at NCAA Division I member Jacksonville State. Alquan Mendenhall led UWA in scoring in two of the three contests, averaging a team-best 15.3 points per game as he has connected 12 treys for a.444 percentage from beyond the arc. Jonathan Griffin second on the team in scoring with 14.7 points and first in rebounding with 9.3 boards recorded the team s only double-double of the young season in the opener against Carver Bible College as he scored 18 and grabbed 16 rebounds. WEST FLORIDA (0-1, 0-0) Newcomers Mike Lewis and Terrance Beasley scored in double-figures, but UCF s Marcus Jordan scored 28 points as the University of Central Florida downed the West Florida, , Friday night at UCF Arena. The game was the season-opener for both teams. Lewis led all Argonauts (0-1) with 15 points, including five three-point baskets. Beasley added ten points and seven rebounds in just 16 minutes of work. Marquis Mathis chipped in nine points for UWF, which shot just 35.8% on the night. Turnovers were an issue for Bob Stinnett s club, as they handed the ball over 23 times. The Argonauts did hand out ten assists, including four from newcomer Anthony Sims. UWF was outrebounded, West Florida heads to The Last Frontier for their next round of games, at the 2010 Alaska Invitational. UWF will face Arkansas-Fort Smith on Thursday in Fairbanks, Alaska, with tip time scheduled for 5:15 local time. WEST GEORGIA (1-1, 0-0) It was a 1-1 week to begin the season for the West Georgia Wolves. UWG began its campaign last Friday with a dramatic, win Southern Polytechnic, a team ranked seventh nationally in the NAIA preseason coaches poll. UWGs hero in the win was senior guard Deion Sims. The Carrollton native drained a three-pointer, his only one of the night, from the left wing with 22 seconds remaining to provide the winning margin. Sims ended the night with 16 points, second only to the team-high performance of DaRon Sims, who added 19. Monday, UWG erased an 11-point, second half deficit, only to go cold in the closing minutes of a road loss to GSC West rival Christian Brothers. Four Wolves scored in double figures, paced by sophomore guard Ryan Godfrey with 14. Junior Gavin Field contributed 12 points and eight rebounds.
