14 Sytia Messer Head Coach First Season Arkansas (2000) The Messer File Birthplace:... Waldo, Ark. Birthdate: Education:... Arkansas (2000) Kinesiology Coaching Experience Assistant Coach Arkansas State Assistant Coach Memphis Assistant Coach/ Recruiting Coordinator Georgia Tech Associate Head Coach Georgia Tech 2009-present... Head Coach Tennessee Tech Some people say that the first step in any endeavor is usually the hardest one to take. In the case of Tennessee Tech women s basketball coach Sytia Messer, however, the first step showed a glimpse of what could be accomplished is her ensuing years as head coach of the Golden Eagle program. A native of Waldo, Ark., Messer s main goal when she was named TTU head coach was to bring additional OVC Championships to Tech, something long-time followers of the women s basketball team have become accustomed to. With three starters returning from last season, including Tacarra Hayes who was named first-team all-ovc last season, its clear that another OVC crown is within their sights in Messer s second year at the helm of the women s basketball program. The very idea that the Golden Eagles are one of the front-runners to win the conference this season is a testament to Messer s coaching skill and recruiting. Her team will not boast any seniors this season and will rely on the youngsters that she has brought into the program. And why shouldn t Tech have high expectations in its youngster as Messer can boast not only the top recruiting class in the OVC, but also the highestranked recruiting class in the program s history. Messer s expertise in recruiting can be traced back to her days as a member of the Georgia Tech coaching staff where she rose to the rank of associate head coach. During her five seasons at Georgia Tech, Messer was the primary architect of five of Georgia Tech s top recruiting classes. During the season Messer helped recruit the highestranked player to ever sign with the program, only to top that accolade a year later as her recruiting class was ranked as high as sixth in the nation. With her excellent recruiting skills, Messer also coaches with a level of intensity that will bring out the best in every player who dons a Tennessee Tech uniform. Messer s intensity is not isolated on the court, however, as she expects the same kind of effort out of her players in the classroom and the community. During Messer s first season, her players had a combined 3.2 GPA in the fall semester, and then followed up with a 3.3 GPA in the spring semester en route to 15 AD Honor Roll selections and five OVC Commissioner Honor Roll selections. The Golden Eagles have also been visible in the community, as they have participated in a number of events including Habitat for Humanity and the Fall Fun Fest. Messer s desire for success can be traced back to her decorated playing career at Arkansas where she played four seasons for the Razorbacks. As a Razorback Messer led the team to a record and an NCAA Final Four appearance in 1998 where she was named the Most Valuable Player for the West Regional. Messer and the Razorbacks followed up with a WNIT Championship in Over the course of her four seasons at Arkansas, Messer tallied 1,379 points to rank seventh on the all-time scorers list. Messer s prowess was not limited to scoring however, as she ranked 10th in career rebounding with 603, sixth in free throws made with 329 and fourth in career three pointers with 112. Messer s players are seeing the same success as she enjoyed during her playing days on the court. Not only did the Golden Eagles make the OVC Tournament in Messer s inaugural season, they also exceeded preseason expectations as they were picked to finish eighth in the OVC and finished fourth. Last season s success was not limited to team accomplishments as several of Messer s players were awarded for their individual performances. Guard Tacarra Hayes was named all-ovc first team as she led the team in a number of categories including points with 506 (16.9 ppg), which ranked second in the OVC last season. Hayes was also named the OVC Player of the Week twice. Guard Kellie Cook also raked in the awards as she was named to the OVC all-newcomer team and earned an OVC Freshman of the Week award. Forward Tiara Hopper also earned an OVC Freshman of the Week award. Messer and her squad have taken the first allimportant step on their trail back to the top. This winter, they continue their march back to an OVC Championship and beyond. 14
