1 Coaching Staff Jorge Salcedo Head Coach 7th Year UCLA '02 Former UCLA All-American Jorge Salcedo enters his seventh season as head coach for the Bruins. A product of UCLA's strong soccer tradition, Salcedo has maintained the Bruins' standard for success, winning four Pac-10 titles and guiding his teams to NCAA Tournament appearances each year. He signed the No. 1 recruiting classes in the nation in 2006 and 2004, and those players produced results, advancing all the way to the NCAA Championship game in the 2006 season and to the quarterfinals in Over the last two seasons, Salcedo's teams have earned two Pac-10 titles and lost just two conference games. In 2009, Salcedo's Bruins won their second-straight Pac-10 Championship in 2009, going in conference play and overall and advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. Two Bruins - Kyle Nakazawa and Brian Perk - earned All-America honors, and a school record-tying five players were selected in the MLS SuperDraft at the conclusion of the season. In 2008, Salcedo guided UCLA to the Pac-10 Championship and was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the second time in his tenure. The Bruins finished with a record, and junior midfielder Michael Stephens earned Pac-10 Player of the Year honors and Soccer America MVP second team acclaim. His 2007 team extended UCLA's post-season appearance streak to 25 consecutive years, advancing to the NCAA second round. The Bruins, who finished with a record, scored in the classroom, with 24 of 30 team members making the Director's Honor Roll during the school year. The 2006 Bruins faced an uphill battle with injuries to several starters throughout the season, but they fought through the adversity and ended a successful post-season run in the title game with a final season record of In 2005, Salcedo's Bruins recorded a record and ranked amongst the best in the nation in team defense, allowing just 14 goals and posting a team goals against average of The Bruins also captured the Pac-10 title for the fourth year in a row and earned a No. 5 seeding in the NCAA Tournament. During his first season, Salcedo earned Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year honors after leading UCLA to its third-straight conference title. His Bruins ended the regular season ranked No. 3 by Soccer America and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, where they finished the year with a record. Salcedo was UCLA's assistant coach from and helped lead the Bruins to the 2002 NCAA Championship and to two Pac-10 team championships. In 2002, he served as acting head coach in a crucial road victory at Stanford in November that helped the Bruins capture their first-ever Pac-10 title. He also served as acting head coach in the spring of 2002 in the coaching transition between Todd Saldaña and Tom Fitzgerald and had served in a similar capacity after Fitzgerald announced his resignation. Salcedo, who is a scout for the U.S. National Team, was the head coach of the 2002 U-16 SoCal ODP State team and was also the assistant coach of the U-17 team in The Cerritos, Calif. native had an illustrious career at UCLA from Salcedo was a four-year starter, playing 74 games and tallying six goals and seven assists for 19 points. As a freshman, he scored the decisive penalty kick in the shootout during the 1990 NCAA Championship game to give UCLA its second national title. In 1993 as a senior, he earned NSCAA firstteam All-America honors. He prepped at Cerritos HS, where he earned two Parade All-America honors. Salcedo played for five years in Major League Soccer (MLS). In his first season in the league, he was a starter for the Los Angeles Galaxy and helped take his team to the MLS Championship game. He also played for Chicago, where he served as team co-captain, Columbus and Tampa Bay before returning to the Galaxy in Prior to his MLS career, he played with the LA Salsa in the APSL and then for F.C. Morelia of the Mexican First Division. Salcedo was also a member of the U.S. National Team program, earning three caps with the full national team and captaining the U-17 team at the 1989 World Youth Championships and the U-20 team at the 1990 CONCACAF Tournament. Salcedo has had extensive ties to the Bruin program for many years. He graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor s Degree in Political Science and was part of three of the Bruins four NCAA Championship teams. He was a ball boy for UCLA during its first championship year in 1985, scored the game-winning penalty kick in the 1990 Championship game and was an assistant coach for the 2002 squad. In addition, his father Hugo was a UCLA assistant coach from and a member of the 1972 U.S. Olympic team and will be serving as the FIFA Chairman of the 2014 World Cup. His brother Eddie was a UCLA letterwinner in Salcedo and his wife Rebecca have been married for six years, and they have three children, Matteo (4), Malea (2) and Marco (born July 2010). 2 Coaching Staff Eddie Soto Assistant Coach 5th Year Cal State Fullerton '95 Kenny Arena Assistant Coach 3rd Year Univ. of Virginia Patrick Seymour Volunteer Asst./ Goalkeeper Coach 2nd Year Chico State '00 Former Cal State Fullerton All-American Eddie Soto begins his fifth season as UCLA assistant coach and his 10th season overall as an NCAA Division I coach. In his first season at UCLA, he helped guide the Bruins to the NCAA College Cup finals, and in the last two seasons, the Bruins won the Pac-10 title. In addition to coaching at UCLA, Soto is the head coach of the U.S. Beach Soccer National Team. Soto was the assistant coach for the men's team at Cal State Fullerton from and was hired again as the lead assistant in He was also the lead assistant for the women's team at Long Beach State from and the head assistant at Long Beach City College in 1997 when the women's team won its first championship. Soto also has vast experience coaching at the club level, totaling 13 years as a coach in the prestigious Coast Soccer League. He coached former UCLA All-Americans Zach Wells and Matt Taylor at Irvine Strikers and also coached the NHB futbol club for five years. An All-American at Cal State Fullerton in 1992 and 1993, Soto is the No. 2 scorer in Titan history, totaling 96 points and 38 goals from He still holds the singleseason record for goals in a season with 18, set in In 1993, he led the Titans to the NCAA semifinals for the first time in school history. His team also advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in In 2007, Soto was named to the MPSF 15-Year Anniversary first team. Upon graduating from Cal State Fullerton in 1995 with a B.A. in Kinesiology, Soto was selected in the initial MLS Draft in 1996 by the NY/NJ MetroStars and again in the supplemental draft in 1998 by the San Jose Clash. He also played for the Orange County Zodiac of the A-League, the Los Angeles Cobras of the USISL and ended his career with the USA Pro Beach Soccer Team. The Cerritos native was a two-time Parade All-American and the 1990 CIF 3-A Player of the Year at Cerritos HS, where he was teammates with UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. He was also a member of the NHB futbol club that won the 1991 National Championship and a member of the U.S. U-18 and U-20 National Teams. Soto, who has a U.S. Soccer Federation "A" Coaching License, resides in Long Beach with his wife, Stephanie, and his children, Fabrizio, Wyatt and Isabela. Kenny Arena, a former Major League Soccer player and University of Virginia standout, is in his third season as a Bruin assistant coach. During his first two seasons at UCLA, he helped lead the Bruins to the Pac-10 title. Arena was an assistant coach at George Mason in 2007 and a volunteer coach for the University of Virginia in Arena, who has a "B" Coaching license, was responsible for player development, recruiting and scheduling at George Mason in At Virginia in 2006, he helped the Cavaliers advance to the NCAA Semifinals, where they lost to UCLA. In addition, Arena has been training and coaching club teams in the Virginia area since Arena played three seasons in Major League Soccer, spending the 2003 and 2004 seasons with the NY/NJ MetroStars and the 2005 season with DC United. In 2002, Arena was a member of the U.S. Under-23 National Team and was also a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team from He played in the 2001 World Youth Championships in Argentina, scoring a goal against the Ukraine. At the University of Virginia, Arena started in 65 of 78 games at midfield from , totaling 24 career points off seven goals (including three game-winners) and 10 assists. He earned all-conference honors as a senior and was twice named to the VaSID All-Virginia team. Arena's father, Bruce, is currently the general manager/ head coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy and was the head coach of the U.S. men's national team from He coached national championship teams at DC United and the University of Virginia. Patrick Seymour joined UCLA in 2009 as a volunteer assistant and goalkeeper coach. As the head goalkeeper coach for the Cal-South ODP program and member of the goalkeeping staff for the Region IV ODP program, Seymour has worked with many of the top goalkeepers in the West. Over nine years, he has trained and helped develop over a dozen youth national and regional team members and won three national titles with his teams. Seymour is also the head goalkeeper coach for the Westside Breakers and has worked with Santa Clarita United, Santa Monica United and the Galaxy Alliance Soccer Club. He also coached the soccer team and served as an associate professor in the Kinesiology department at Santa Monica College. Seymour played at Chico State from and graduated in 2000 with a degree in Political Science. During his senior season, he helped lead his team to a Top 20 national ranking. As a youth player growing up in the San Francisco area, he played in three State Cup finals and was a member of the Cal-North ODP state pool from Seymour holds both a USSF national and goalkeeping national license and is pursuing a Master's degree in Exercise Science UCLA Men's Soccer
