BIG 10 TRIO: Oakland s challenging non-conference schedule was headlined by three Big 10 opponents on the road. The Golden Grizzlies opened the campaign at Michigan (Nov. 13) followed by at #22 MSU (Dec. 3) and Indiana (12/17). ATTACK ON THE MAC: Oakland s setback against Ball State was the second against a Mid-American Conference opponent. Earlier this season, Oakland pushed Central Michigan to double overtime before falling (11/22). 126 POINTS NATIONAL HIGH AND SCHOOL SCORING RECORD: Oakland had eight players in double figures en route to setting a school scoring record with a win over Marygrove in the home opener (11/14). The Golden Grizzlies also set a school records with 53 field goals made along with 73 rebounds. The 126 points ranks second the most scored by a team this season in the nation behind 140 by Baylor. OAKLAND PICKED FIFTH HORIZON LEAGUE PRESEASON POLL: The Oakland women s basketball team was selected to finish in a seventh-place tie with Cleveland State in the Horizon League Preseason Poll, announced by the league office on Women s Basketball Media Day. Taylor Jones was named All- League Second Team. RETURNING FIREPOWER: During the season, Oakland led the league in field goal percentage 42.7%, ranked second in the league in scoring 75.4 ppg and third in 3-point percentage 32.7% Horizon League All-Freshman Team and Preseason Second-Team selection Taylor Jones returns as Oakland s top scorer averaging 13.6 ppg last season. Taylor Gleason also returns as the team s second leading scorer behind Jones and was team leader in steals (62) last season. Sharp-shooter Nicole Dood lead the team from 3-point range a 40.4% FRESH FACES: The Golden Grizzlies will have eight new players looking to make an immediate impact starting with St. Bonaventure transfer Hanna Little and DePaul transfer Sha Keya Graves who each bring Division I experience to the team. Former redshirts Nikita Telesford and Jessica Rotzoll will also look to add depth off the bench will junior college transfers Cierra Bond, Lorena Hubbard and Mercy Agwaniru will look to compete for time as well. NEW STAFF ADDITIONS: Oakland added three new members to the coaching and operations staff. Assistant coach Nicole Burford comes to Oakland spending six seasons as the head coach of the women s basketball program at Olivet College leading the Comets to a overall record and four consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament berths. She also served as an assistant coach for three years prior to the promotion. Assistant coach Andrea Williams spent one-year coaching at Fort Wayne and the previous five seasons as head coach at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., winning more games in her first season than the Falcons previous two seasons combined. Her Air Force teams would go on to win the program s first Mountain West Conference (MWC) in four years and second overall in program history. They also went on to set NCAA Division I records in points scored, rebounds, field goal percentage, threepoint field goal percentage, assists, free throws made and free throws attempted. Lewis also the Assistant Athletic Director at Detroit PAL overseeing recreational, school and travel soccer leagues while assisting with all sports leagues and programs provided by the organization. BIG SHOES TO FILL: The team will have to account for the loss of seniors Elena Popkey and Olivia Nash who signed contracts to play professional basketball internationally after graduating. Popkey currently plays for the Elangeni Falcons based in Bad Homburg, Germany and member of the Damen Basketball Bundesliga League under head coach Jay R. Brown. Nash is a member of Club Vimpelin Veto (ViVe) in Vimpeli, Finland who is a part of the SM-Sarja League under the direction of head coach is Jarrko Havu. Popkey, a native of Warren, Mich., finished her career tied with Ann Serra ( ) for the most career assists in program history (483) while ranking sixth all-time in program history in 3-pointers made (184). Nash, a native from Escanaba, Mich., started in 57 or her last 58 career games and recorded eight double-doubles during her senior campaign becoming the school s all-time leader in the Division I era with 32 while ranking seventh with 891 career rebounds. 8 Head Coach Jeff Tungate Jeff Tungate was named the head coach for the women s basketball team on July 16, 2013 and just finished his second season at the helm. He had spent the previous six seasons as the associate head coach for the men s basketball program and completed his ninth season overall with the Golden Grizzlies. In 2014, Tungate received the inaugural Oakland Athletics Coach of the Year award. During Tungate s third season in , Oakland ranked first in the league in field goal percentage 42.7%, second in the league in scoring 75.4 ppg and third in 3-point percentage 32.7%. With the win at Vermont (Dec. 30), the Golden Grizzlies concluded the non-conference regular season with an 8-3 record which tied the and teams for the best non-conference winning percentage (72.7%) to begin a season in the Division I era. He also guided Oakland to a win over Green Bay (Mar. 5) on senior day becoming only the second team since YSU in to sweep the Phoenix in conference play. The Golden Grizzlies also defeated #22 Green Bay, 58-56, (Jan. 28) which was Oakland s first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 21 South Dakota State, 67-51, on Jan. 5, The Golden Grizzlies also scored a single-game school record 123 points the opener versus NAIA UM Dearborn (Nov. 13) making a record 51 field goals while shooting 61.4 percent from the field. Tungate also coached Olivia Nash who garnered All-Horizon League second team honors and Taylor Jones was an All-Freshman Team selection. Nash finished her career as the 27th player in program history to surpass 1,000 points and ranks first all-time in program history for most double-doubles in the Division I era with 32. He also coached Elena Popkey who also finished her career tied with Ann Serra ( ) for the most career assists in program history with 483, ranked sixth all-time in program history in 3-pointers made with 184 and was named the inaugural recipient of the Horizon League s Bobby Fong Award which embodies the league s core values of integrity, respect and stewardship. In his second season, Tungate once again finished sixth in the 12th-ranked conference in the NCAA. He also coached back-toback All-Horizon League defensive team selections as Sinclair Russell was named as an honoree after leading the league in blocks. Since taking over, the Golden Grizzlies have scored the most points over a two-year span since the and seasons. Tungate led Oakland to a win over Green Bay on the road on Feb. 4, becoming only the sixth Horizon League team to defeat the Phoenix at home in league play in 16 years. In his first season at the helm, Tungate led the Golden Grizzlies to its first non-losing season in league play since OU finished the season with a 8-8 record in its inaugural season in the Horizon League. He also implemented a new offense that averaged the most points per game since and the most total points in five seasons. He coached the first-ever All-Horizon League performers in Bethany Watterworth (2nd team) and Kim Bee (All-Defensive). He earned his first career victory as a Division I head coach on Nov. 27, 2013, defeating Niagara Tungate began his career as Assistant Girl s Basketball Coach at Clarkston High School followed by one season as Assistant Women s Basketball Coach at Oakland Community College working for Oakland Hall of Honor member Ann Serra. He spent seven seasons overall with the men s basketball program, six as associate head coach. The Golden Grizzlies experienced unmatched success, making three NCAA tournaments and winning five Summit League championships during his tenure. In 2010, Tungate was an honorable mention selection by CollegeInsider.com for the top 25 mid-major assistant coaches. Over the course of his seven years with the men s program, Tungate worked with six players that played professional basketball, including OU s first-ever NBA Draft Pick Keith Benson, taken 48th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in Prior to his return to Oakland, Tungate spent two seasons as the associate head coach at IPFW under current Michigan State assistant coach Dane Fife from , helping the Mastodons to the best season in program history at that time. Tungate worked previously at OU during the season that saw the men s team win The Summit League tournament as the No. 7 seed and advanced to their first NCAA tournament since becoming eligible for Division I postseason play in The Golden Grizzlies won the opening round game over Alabama A&M, 79-69, before losing to eventual national champion and top-seed North Carolina, Tungate spent five seasons as head coach of Lincoln Memorial University (Division II) located in Harrogate, Tenn., from He led the Railsplitters to their best finish in the conference tournament and tied for a program-best 19 wins since moving up to Division II. He also tutored two Gulf South Conference Players of the Year and had a player make all-conference first team in four out of his five years at the helm. Tungate graduated from Oakland in 1993 with a degree in English. During his time at OU he played on the baseball team where he earned Preseason All-America honors in 1992 and continues to hold the school record for longest hitting streak at 20 games.
