The Red Raiders boast the third-longest active winning streak in season openers nationally after beginning each of the last 15 years with a victory. That streak is the longest in the Big 12 Conference and trails only Ohio State (17) and Alabama (16) nationally. Texas Tech s 15-game winning streak in season openers is the longest in school history. Prior to this streak, the Red Raiders high was six-consecutive seasons opened with a win from Texas Tech has not dropped a season opener since falling at No. 12 Ohio State, 45-21, to open the 2002 campaign. The Red Raiders have not opened a season with a loss to an unranked opponent since falling at Arizona State, 31-13, in Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury is a perfect 5-0 alltime in season openers after victories over SMU (2013), Central Arkansas (2014), Sam Houston State (2015), Stephen F. Austin (2016) and Eastern Washington (2017). The Red Raiders are averaging 52.8 points per game in their four season openers under Kingsbury. The Red Raiders have scored at least 20 points in all 18 games during that time and at least 50 points five times, including each of the last three seasons. During that same time period (2000-present), opposing teams are only averaging 18.1 points per game against the Red Raider defense. Texas Tech has held opponents to less than 20 points in 11 of its past 18 season openers. Texas Tech has won 17 of its 18 season openers since the turn of the century, the majority of which in blowout fashion. The Red Raiders have averaged 29 points as their margin of victory since 2000 with double-digit victories in all but two of those contests. Dating back to the inaugural football season in 1925, this will be the first time in school history Tech has played multiple neutral-site contests during the regular season. Texas Tech is opening its season in a neutral-site contest for the first time since 1959 when the Red Raiders faced Texas A&M in Dallas. Tech also met the Aggies in Dallas to start the 1958 season and prior to that traveled to Oklahoma City to battle then Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State). The Red Raiders will play a total of four true road games in 2018, which marks the fewest in a season since All four road games will take place during Big 12 play with trips to Oklahoma State (Sept. 22), TCU (Oct. 11), Iowa State (Oct. 27) and Kansas State (Nov. 17). OPENING THE SEASON ON THE ROAD Texas Tech will be opening its season away from Jones AT&T Stadium for the first time since 2013 and only the fifth time since The Red Raiders, who are all-time in season openers away from Lubbock, have won each of their last three season openers on the road, defeating SMU to start the 2004, 2007 and 2013 seasons. BACK IN HOUSTON Texas Tech will be playing in the city of Houston for the third time in the past four seasons as the Red Raiders previously appeared in the 2015 AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl against LSU and then topped the University of Houston a year ago. Texas Tech boasts 23 players from the Houston area who will have an opportunity to play in front of friends and family this weekend. Of that group, Dakota Allen is the only Red Raider who will be playing in the city of Houston for the third time in his collegiate career. The city of Houston has also been special to several members of the Texas Tech coaching staff as head coach Kliff Kingsbury, defensive coordinator David Gibbs ( ), co-defensive coordinator Zac Spavital ( ), defensive backs coach Clay Jennings ( ; 2017) and safeties coach Brett Dewhurst ( ) all previously worked at the University of Houston. Jennings ( ) and offensive line coach Brandon Jones (2009) also have coaching experience at Sam Houston State outside of Houston, while Gibbs was the defensive backs coach for the Houston Texans from In addition, Preston Gordon will return to the city of Houston where he played his first three collegiate seasons as a defensive lineman at Rice. Gordon transfered to Texas Tech this summer after totaling 87 tackles, including 17.5 that went for a loss over his career. GETTING UP EARLY The early start to the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff shouldn t have an effect on the Red Raiders as Texas Tech moved to morning workouts beginning on Aug. 21. Tech will have had two full weeks of early rises before facing Ole Miss as part of a new practice schedule for this season. Texas Tech will utilize morning practices for the duration of the 2018 season. The Red Raiders had previously held afternoon workouts throughout Kliff Kingsbury s tenure. Kingsbury moved to morning workouts beginning this past spring. 3 WEEK 1: OLE MISS 2018 TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL WHO WILL IT BE? The question on the minds of media and most Red Raider fans alike is who will trot out as the starting quarterback on Texas Tech s opening drive Saturday? Sorry, the answer won t be found here. The winner of the three-man preseason quarterback battle between junior McLane Carter, sophomore Jett Duffey and true freshman Alan Bowman will inherit the keys to Texas Tech s high-octane offense that has regularly ranked among the nation s elite units dating back to the start of the 2000 season. Tech is the only school in the country to rank in the top 10 for passing offense in every season since If Carter is selected, it ll be the second start of his career as he earned the nod in the regular-season finale last season at Texas. Duffey and Bowman, meanwhile, would be making their first career starts, respectively. Since joining the coaching profession as a full-time assistant in 2010, quarterbacks under Kliff Kingsbury are averaging 4,797 passing yards, 5,129 yards of total offense, 46 total touchdowns and just 14 interceptions per year. QBs IN FIRST CAREER STARTS In case the starting quarterback is either Duffey or Bowman, here is a listing of Red Raider quarterbacks in their first career start: RED RAIDERS IN FIRST CAREER STARTS (SINCE 1999) Name Opponent (Year) Stats Kliff Kingsbury Oklahoma (2000) 9-17, 259 yds, 3 TDs B.J. Nic Shimonek E. Wash. (2017) 26-30, 384 yds, 3 TDs McLane Carter Texas (2017) 16-37, 237 yds. KINGSBURY WITH FRESHMAN QBS Kliff Kingsbury is no stranger to true freshman quarterbacks. In fact, if Alan Bowman is the starter Saturday, he would be the seventh freshman quarterback to start a game during Kingsbury s career, joining Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and current NFL quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes II, Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb. Kingsbury also started a pair of freshmen in Terrance Broadway and David Piland during his first season as a full-time assistant coach at the University of Houston in LEFTY, LEFTY If selected for the starting nod, McLane Carter is believed to be the first left-handed quarterback to be named the opening-game starter for the Red Raiders in school history. HIGH LEVEL OF PRODUCTION Since joining the coaching profession in 2008, Kliff Kingsbury has built a reputation as one of the top quarterback developers in all of football. In that short time, he has had six quarterbacks move on to NFL careers, including 2017 NFL first-round selection Patrick Mahomes II. Carter completed 23 of his 46 pass attempts on the year for 359 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing 15 times for 38 yards and a touchdown. He was 16-of-37 for 237 yards in the Texas game alone as the Red Raiders secured a victory. Duffey, meanwhile, appeared in one game as a redshirt freshman in 2017 as he completed each of his two pass attempts in the season-opening win over Eastern Washington. Duffey joined the Red Raiders in the spring of 2016 after earning the Dave Campbell s Texas Football Mr. Texas Award as a senior at Lake Ridge High School. He accumulated 4,444 yards of total offense and 48 total touchdowns his senior year alone as one of the top quarterbacks in the state of Texas. Bowman is the newest signal caller to arrive on campus as he graduated a semester early from Grapevine High School in order to enroll at Texas Tech last spring. Bowman threw for 11,393 yards and 119 touchdowns during his four-year prep career where he ranked among the top quarterbacks in Texas. BIG MEN UP FRONT ALL RETURN After boasting one of the youngest offensive lines in the country a year ago, second-year offensive line coach Brandon Jones will reap the benefits of having all five of his starters returning. Jones utilized the same starting lineup the final 11 games of last season with Travis Bruffy at left tackle, Madison Akamnonu at left guard, Paul Stawarz at center, Jack Anderson at right guard and Terence Steele at right tackle. Stawarz will be the only senior in that group as Jones mentored one of the youngest offensive lines in the country a year ago. Among the offensive line alone, the group has accounted for 83 career starts, led by Steele, who has made 25 starts over the last two years alone. He is followed by Stawarz with 21 starts and then Akamnonu with 20 starts of his own. Jack Anderson returns for his sophomore campaign after a stellar debut in 2017 where he was named a Freshman All-American by both ESPN and USA Today. Anderson started in all 13 games at right guard for the Red Raiders. Anderson s selection marked the first time a Red Raider had been named a Freshman All-American since the 2013 season. In addition, he joined current Indianapolis Colts standout Le Raven Clark as the only Texas Tech offensive linemen in school history to garner Freshman All-America accolades. The hashtag #ThingsHaveChanged has been a prominent message on the Twitter feeds for both David Gibbs this offseason after the Red Raiders were one of the most improved defenses in the country a year ago. Texas Tech was among the top ball-hawking defenses in the country in 2017 as the Red Raiders forced 29 turnovers, which led the Big 12 and finished tied for sixth nationally. Since the start of the 2000 campaign, Texas Tech had forced 29 turnovers in a season twice previously which came in both 2008 as well as MOST TURNOVERS CAUSED DATING BACK TO 2000 Year FUM INT Turnovers #806D: 10 STARTERS RETURN For as improved as the Texas Tech defense was in 2017, Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator David Gibbs expect the Red Raiders to be even better this season. Part of that belief is the number of returners coming back on the defensive side of the ball as 10 starters and nine additional two-deep players are all back this season. Texas Tech lost just two defensive players from a year ago that saw playing time late in the season as both Zach Barnes and Mychealon Thomas departed due to graduation. Thomas started in all 13 games at nose tackle and is currently on the New York Jets training camp roster. Texas Tech s list of defensive returners account for 184 career starts among them, 154 of which come from the 10 defensive starters who will be back in scarlet and black next fall. Jah Shawn Johnson leads all returning players with 37 starts over his career as the senior has started in every game the past three seasons outside the 2017 meeting against Kansas State. Johnson had to sit out the first half of that game after being called for a targeting penalty late in the Oklahoma game the previous week. Texas Tech has six additional defensive players with 10 or more starts during their career as Jordyn Brooks leads the group with 22 over just two seasons followed by Kolin Hill (20), Dakota Allen (18), Broderick Washington Jr. (14), Vaughnte Dorsey (12) and DaMarcus Fields (11). Johnson teams with both Allen and Justus Parker as returning Red Raiders who earned All-Big 12 accolades a year ago. The trio were all named to the All-Big 12 second team last season by the conference coaches, marking the first time since 2012 where Tech had three or more defensive players earn first or second team honors. The trio also earned All-Big 12 preseason honors this summer, the most defensive selections for any conference school. Austin and High will both contribute to Texas Tech s passing game, while Heffron will enter his third season as the Red Raiders deep ALLEN AMONG NATION S BEST Dakota Allen will enter the 2018 campaign ranked among the top players in the country after the senior linebacker led the Red Raiders with 102 tackles a year ago en route to earning All-Big 12 second team honors by the conference coaches. Allen also produced four of Texas Tech s 29 total takeaways on the season as he had a pair of interceptions to go along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. This past January, CBS Sports ranked Allen at No. 14 nationally among returning players for the 2018 season. The rankings were compiled using season-long grades from Pro Football Focus along with other stats and information. Allen was the highest-ranked linebacker in the poll and ranked No. 4 overall among Big 12 players. Allen is already a preseason candidate for the Nagurski Award (top defensive player) and the Bednarik Award (top defensive player). In addition to Allen, Texas Tech also returns junior Jordyn Brooks and sophomore Riko Jeffers, giving the Red Raiders one of the deepest and talented linebacker cores in the country heading into Brooks has recorded 175 tackles the past two seasons, 86 of which came in 2016 when he became the first Red Raider freshman to lead the team in tackles during the Big 12 era. Jeffers had 22 tackles and a fumble recovery in 2017 as a true freshman. LEADER OF #806D IS BACK David Gibbs signed a new two-year contract with Texas Tech this past December that will keep the popular defensive coordinator in Lubbock through the 2019 season. Texas Tech has not had the same defensive coordinator over four-consecutive seasons since John Goodner led the defense through the final five seasons ( ) of Spike Dykes tenure as head coach. Among its Big 12 counterparts, Texas Tech will enter 2018 as one of just three league schools to boast the same head coach and defensive coordinator since the start of the 2015 season, joining both Kansas and West Virginia. Following a career in the NFL, Gibbs returned to the college game in 2013 as the defensive coordinator at the University of Houston. Since that time, Gibbs has led defenses that have ranked among the top-25 teams in the country for forced turnovers in four of the past five seasons, including twice in his three years at Tech (2015, 2017). Gibbs units have caused 140 takeaways over the past five seasons alone, which is tied for the most among defensive coordinators nationally during that span. 5 WEEK 1: OLE MISS 2018 TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL JOHNSON AMONG TECH GREATS Each tackle for Jah Shawn Johnson during the 2018 season will inch him closer to the Texas Tech record book as he needs 65 takedowns to crack the top 10 in program history. Johnson is averaging 86 tackles per season over the past three years after notching 85 as a redshirt freshman in 2015, 77 in 2016 and then a career-high 97 a year ago. Johnson has also played a huge role in Texas Tech s rise as one of the top turnover-causing defenses in the country as he has been part of 17 takeaways over his career (5 interceptions, 6 forced fumbles, 6 fumble recoveries), easily the most among active Red Raiders. Since the start of 2000, Johnson s six career forced fumbles rank fourth among Red Raiders, trailing only the totals of Dwayne Slay (8 from ), Pete Robertson (8 from ) and Brandon Williams (7 from ). Johnson s five fumble recoveries, meanwhile, are tied with Keyunta Dawson ( ) for the most among Red Raiders dating back to the 2000 season. With one full season left to play, Johnson needs two more fumble recoveries to tie Zach Thomas ( ) school record. TEXAS TECH CAREER TACKLES LEADERS Player (Years) Tackles 1. Lawrence Flugence ( ) Brad Hastings ( ) Kevin Curtis ( ) Michael Johnson ( ) Zach Thomas ( ) Matt Wingo ( ) Shawn Banks ( ) Cody Davis ( ) Ryan Aycock ( ) Charles Rowe ( ) 329 Jah Shawn Johnson (2014-present) 264 FINISH The term finish has been a popular one around the Football Training Facility since the conclusion of the 2017 campaign as head coach Kliff Kingsbury declared the six-letter word as the official team motto for this season. The Red Raiders have dropped seven games by one possession or less (8 points) the last two seasons, over half of their losses during that span. A LATE ADDITION Texas Tech picked up a valuable late addition to its roster two weeks into training camp in University of Texas transfer John Bonney, who began practicing with the Red Raiders on Aug. 15. Bonney arrives in Lubbock after playing in 37 career games with 15 starts for the Longhorns, compiling 87 career tackles (66 solo) to go along with an interception, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and 14 pass breakups. STRIPPING THE BALL LOOSE One of the key elements of David Gibbs defensive philosophy is creating fumble opportunities. The Red Raiders have caused opponents to lose 33 fumbles over the last three seasons, which is tied for 13th among teams nationally during that span. Among power-five schools, Texas Tech ranks eighth in fumble recoveries during that same time span. Of Texas Tech s 33 fumble recoveries under Gibbs, 15 alone came during the 2017 season where Texas Tech led the Big 12 and ranked fourth nationally. NATIONAL LEADERS IN FUMBLES CAUSED SINCE 2015 School Fumbles Recovered 1. Memphis 38 Penn State Utah Miami (Fla.) 35 Navy 35 Washington 35 Washington State 35 Western Michigan 35 Wyoming Marshall 34 Minnesota 34 South Carolina Texas Tech 33 #WRU After sending four wide receivers to NFL training camps following the 2017 season, Texas Tech will look to reload its passing game behind a new quarterback and several new faces at wideout. Tech had no shortage of success at the wide receiver position over the past decade as nine Red Raider wideouts are currently on NFL rosters, including seven from Kliff Kingsbury s tenure. Among Texas Tech s list of NFL standouts is two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Michael Crabtree, the first player in NCAA history to win the prestigious trophy twice. T.J. Heffron returns for an extra season as he was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA prior to the start of spring practice. Heffron has served as Texas Tech s primary deep snapper during each of the last two seasons. All four of Texas Tech s main specialists are listed as seniors, giving Scheier an experienced group in his first season. Scheier has been adament since his hiring that starters on both offense and defense will see action on special teams. AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE Australian punter Dominic Panazzolo had a strong debut in 2017 as Texas Tech s primary punter. The senior limited opponents to just 12 returns out of his 60 punts on the season, holding foes to just 5.6 yards per return overall. Panazzolo averaged 41.4 yards per punt on the year as he downed 15 punts inside the 20 yard line. He only had two punts end in touchbacks as well. MR. UNDER ARMOUR In addition to preparing for the 2018 season, Dominic Panazzolo gained some additional career experience this past summer as a week-long intern at Under Armour s world headquarters in Baltimore. Panazzolo worked as a sports marketing intern through the intership promoted to Texas Tech student-athletes through the J.T. and Margaret Talkington Leadership Academy. Batson averaged 6.1 yards per punt over his four-year career as a Red Raider The Red Raiders also lost an explosive threat on kick returns after Keke Coutee declared for the NFL Draft. Coutee, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Houston Texans, averaged 31.5 yards per kick return in 2017, the highest single-season clip in program history. Scheier will utilize several new faces in the return game as senior De Quan Bowman will get an opportunity alongside sophomore Adrian Frye and true freshman Ta Zhawn Henry. HATFIELD MOVING UP RECORD BOOK Hatfield heads into his senior season already among the prolific kickers in school history as he ranks ninth all-time with 33 career field goals. Hatfield will need to connect on 17 field goals in 2018 to match Ryan Bustin s career record of 50 field goals from the seasons. Hatfield is among the career leaders for point-after-tries as he enters 2018 with 140 over the last three seasons. He needs just 14 PATs next season to pass Bustin for second all-time on the Tech career chart. Alex Trilica still has the Tech career record as he made 233 PATs during the seasons. Hatfield has connected on 33-of-40 field goal attempts over his career, which is good for an.825 average that trails only Baylor s Connor Martin (.833) among returning Big 12 kickers. 12 2018 TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL WEEK 1: OLE MISS LAST MEETING - JAN. 2, 2009 OLE MISS TEXAS TECH Cotton Bowl Stadium Dallas, Texas 1:15 p.m. FOX Attendance: 88,175 Graham Harrell threw for 364 yards and two touchdowns in his final start as a Red Raider at the 2009 Cotton Bowl. DALLAS (AP) -- Behind Jevan Snead s passing, Dexter McCluster s squirming runs and some big returns by Marshay Green, No. 20 Mississippi overcame an early deficit and beat No. 7 Texas Tech Friday in the final Cotton Bowl played in the stadium of the same name. The Red Raiders (11-2) converted a pair of early turnovers into a 14-0 lead, but Snead led the Rebels to touchdowns on their next three drives, followed by a go-ahead field goal shortly before halftime. Once Green returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter, Ole Miss (9-4) was well on its way to capping coach Houston Nutt s first season in grand style. This was Mississippi s sixth straight win, matching its longest streak since 2003, when Eli Manning was a senior. That also was the last time the Rebels had been to a bowl. This roll began when Ole Miss was only 3-4 and coming off consecutive losses following its stunning upset at the Swamp. Actually, it might ve begun the week before when a late comeback at Alabama came up short. The string includes a win at LSU when the Tigers were No. 18. These guy have such great character and it s gotten better each and every week, Nutt said. A postgame celebration five years in the making was practically worth the wait to the 44,000 or so Rebels fans, nearly all of whom stuck around until long after the game. When time ran out, one player tumbled across the 50-yard line and others ran around carrying flags. Several guys gleefully held up a wipe board with the message, 94 percent said we couldn t (...) WE DID. The Red Raiders had a direct path to playing in that game until getting crushed by the Sooners in late November. At the time, they were unbeaten and ranked second, the highest mark in school history. Getting drubbed in two of the last three games takes some shine off Tech s season, and kept senior quarterback Graham Harrell from going out with the school s record-setting 12th win. Harrell s consolation was several statistical feats: most career touchdowns in major college football (four in this game made it 134 for his career, breaking the record of 131 set by Hawaii s Colt Brennan) and first player with two 5,000-yard passing seasons. Harrell was 36-of-58 for a Cotton Bowl-record 364 yards, giving him 5,111 yards this season. Only five other quarterbacks have cracked 5,000, including Brennan and two others from Texas Tech. All-American receiver Michael Crabtree caught only four passes for 30 yards in what might be his last college game. Slowed by an ankle injury sustained in the season finale, his highlight was a 2-yard touchdown catch for Harrell s record-breaker and his lowlight was falling down on the pass that turned into Green s interception and return for the score that put Ole Miss up Snead, a Texas native who began his career with the Longhorns, was 18-of-29 for 292 yards and three touchdowns. He threw an early interception that was returned for the touchdown that put Tech up 14-0, but the Rebels didn t have another turnover the rest of the way while piling up a season-best 515 yards. McCluster, who at 5-foot-8 is hard to find and even harder to tackle, was at the center of everything, running 14 times for 97 yards and a touchdown, and catching six passes for 83 yards. On the other end of the spectrum, 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end Gerald Harris caught two passes for 29 yards, both touchdowns - after having only five catches and two TDs all season. Green nearly stole the show by following his long interception return with what initially was called a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown. Upon review, however, he stepped out at the nine and two-thirds yard line, as the official described it. This was the 73rd Cotton Bowl and the last in its namesake home. Next year, it ll be played in the $1.1 billion stadium being built by the Dallas Cowboys. The bowl founder s widow handled the pregame coin toss and the dates 1937 and 2009 were painted on the field between the words, Celebrating 73 years. This turned out to be the most points in the game s history and the biggest crowd, 88,175, thanks to a recent stadium expansion. It was the third-warmest, too, with 69 degrees at kickoff and the mid-70s at halftime. SCORING SUMMARY QTR Time Team Scoring Play Drive / Time 1st 06:31 TT Britton, E. 35 yd pass from Harrell, G.
