Last year, KSU swept USC Upstate. SCOUTING USC UPSTATE In last week s game, Mike Cunningham carried the Spartans to a victory hitting six three pointers and scoring 22 points. Upstate s leading scorer, Michael Buchanan, was held in check for most of the game as he had six points and seven rebounds. Both are down from his team leading averages of 14.5 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game. SUPER SENIOR After being named to the ASUN Preseason All-Conference team, Kendrick Ray was selected to the Lou Henson Preseason Watch List. The Lou Henson award goes to the nation s top mid-major player. Ray is currently second in the ASUN and 13th in the nation averaging 21.7 ppg. He has scored at least 20 points in 16 of the 24 games this season and has four 30-point performances. Last season, he had two 30-point games giving him six for his career. Against NJIT with the Owls trailing by one, Ray hit a game winner with under five seconds to go to bring KSU s conference record to 4-4. Ray is also one of two players to shoot at least 45.0 percent from the field, 40.0 percent from three-point range and 80.0 percent from the free throw line. Dallas Moore is the other player with these numbers. 4 » Daily Dribbles Nation Leaders Kendrick Ray, Nick Masterson and Aubrey Williams hard work in the offseason is showing up on the court as the three of them are among the nation leaders in a couple of statistical categories. Nick Masterson has been deadly from long range as he has made 68 of 132 for a 51.5 percent clip. That mark leads the nation. Ray is 13th in the nation averaging 21.7 points per game. He has posted four 30-point performances, point performances and has been in double figures in every game this season. Aubrey Williams has pulled down 13 double-doubles and is averaging 10.7 rebounds per game. The 13 double-doubles is ninth in the country and the 10.7 rebounds per game is 13th best in the country. Double-Double Machine Through 24 games, Aubrey Williams is averaging 12.4 points and 10.7 rebounds with 13 double-doubles. The 13 double-doubles is tied for the seventh most in the country. Williams has grabbed double-digit rebounds in 15 games this season. Coming into the season, he had two career double-doubles. Smart Outside Shooting Kennesaw State doesn t shoot a lot of threes, but when they do it s usually a good shot leading to a high shooting percentage from behind the arc. The Owls lead the nation shooting 43.1 percent going from three-point range. In conference play, KSU has been making 7.9 threes per game putting them at the fourth best mark in the conference. They have made nine threes in six of the eight ASUN games. Battle Tested The Owls have been in 10 games this season that have been within four points. Despite having four losses in conference play, Kennesaw State owns the third best scoring margin in the conference through the eight games at The first three losses came by a combined eight points against North Florida, FGCU and Lipscomb. Double Digit Wins The victory against NJIT gave Kennesaw State 10 wins this season. That is the third season in a row that KSU has won at least 10 games. Since joining Division I during the season, it is the seventh time that the Owls have had double-digit wins. Winning Ways in January The Owls had a winning record in January for the first time since joining Division I with a 5-4 record. Three of those victories came on the road against Tennessee State, Jacksonville and NJIT. The win at Tennessee State capped a non-conference schedule for Kennesaw State with a win against the 61st team in the RPI at the time. 5 » news & notes Taking Care of the Ball In 11 of the last 14 games, Kennesaw State has had more assists than turnovers and that has led to success in the win column as KSU is 7-5 in their last 12 games. Through eight ASUN games, the Owls are leading the conference averaging 16.3 assists per game. In those games, they also have only committed 11.8 turnovers per game giving them a 1.4 assist to turnover rating which is second in the conference behind Stetson. Masterson of the Three Nick Masterson is averaging 12.6 points per game with a 47.8 percentage from the floor and 51.5 percent from behind the arc, which leads the nation. Overall, Masterson has already made 68 three pointers this season compared to last year where he only made 31. He s not only scoring the ball, but setting up his teammates as well. He s second on the team with 69 assists this season, and since conference play started, he leads the conference with an assist to turnover ratio of 3.5. Dynamic Offensive Duo Masterson and Ray have been quite the offensive duo this season as they average 34.3 points per game together. The two are the primary threats from the outside as they have combined to hit 140 of the team s 168 three pointers this year. Ray and Masterson do it at a high percentage as well as they are in the top 30 in the nation in three-point field goal percentage. 1,000 Career Points After setting a single-season record with 579 points in his first season at Kennesaw State, Ray needed 11 points against North Georgia and got just that surpassing the 1,000 career points mark. Newcomer of the Year Ray is the first Kennesaw State player to win the Newcomer of the Year award since the ASUN started to award it in The only other KSU student-athlete to win a post-season award was Andre Morgan when he won Freshman of the Year during the season. HOF Inductee This fall, former start player Terrence Hill was inducted into the Kennesaw State Hall of Fame. In his time at KSU, he helped Kennesaw State win the 2004 NCAA Division II Men s Basketball national championship, while also earning 2004 Division II All-American honors. He was also named the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. ASUN Championship Final on ESPN & Westwood One For the first time since 2002, the ASUN Championship Final will be seen on ESPN after spending the past few seasons on ESPN2. The 2017 ASUN Final is set for Sunday, Mar. 5th at 3 PM. To go along with the ESPN coverage, Westwood One will air the conference final for the second-straight season on national radio. Reaching 100 Since Skinner has taken over, Kennesaw State has been very efficient and successful on offense. Since joining the division I ranks, KSU had never reached the century mark in a game. The last time the team scored 100 points they played at the NAIA level in

6 HEAD COACH AL SKINNER Al Skinner, a former Division I national coach of the year and two-time BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year, was named the head coach of the Kennesaw State men s basketball program on April 26, In his first season at Kennesaw State and 23rd season as a head coach, Skinner had a big impact on the Owls team guiding them to a.500 record in the Atlantic Sun Conference for the first time since the season. The team won four of its final five regular season games, including beating the back-toback A-Sun Champions, North Florida. A big part of the success came from the guard play as Kendrick Ray and Yonel Brown both thrived under Coach Skinner as each of them set a new Division I single-season Kennesaw State points record with 579 and 578 points respectively. The leading duo in the A-Sun finished as one of three pairs in the country to average over 18 points per game with Ray averaging 18.7 ppg and Brown averaging 18.6 ppg. Both student-athletes were honored at the end of the season as they were named A-Sun Second Team All-Conference, and Ray was unanimously voted as the Newcomer of the Year. A current member of the NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Ethics Coalition, Skinner guided his teams to nine NCAA Tournament appearances and four conference titles during tenures at the University of Rhode Island and Boston College. His teams posted ten 20-plus win seasons. The winningest coach in BC history, Skinner spent 13 seasons at The Heights, compiling a (.560) record from He took Boston College to six NCAA Tournaments in a seven-year stretch, leading his team to the Sweet 16. Four of his teams finished the year ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll, including the 2001 and 2007 clubs that concluded those seasons at No. 7. After guiding the Eagles to a 27-5 overall record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Skinner was named 2001 National Coach of the Year by Chevrolet/CBS, ESPN,Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). He also earned BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year honors. Al Skinner Head Coach 24th Year UMass 1974 Skinner earned BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year again in 2005 after leading Boston College to a 25-5 mark and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his time at BC, Skinner spent nine seasons as head coach at Rhode Island, leading the Rams to a (.523) mark. Skinner took over as head coach at URI in 1988 after serving as an assistant on the Rams bench from During his tenure in Kingston, he led Rhode Island to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths (1993 and 1997) and two more National Invitational Tournament (NIT) appearances (1992 and 1996), as well as three 20+ win seasons. He was named the Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year in and was inducted into the University of Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame in Skinner came to Kennesaw State after serving two seasons as associate head coach under longtime friend Tim O Shea at Bryant University where the Bulldogs compiled a (.540) overall record, including a (.647) mark in the Northeast Conference. Skinner first broke into coaching as an assistant at Marist College in 1982 following successful stints in the ABA and NBA from (Nets, Pistons, 76ers). Drafted by the ABA s New York Nets in the eighth round of the 1974 draft, Skinner was named to the ABA All-Rookie Team and led the Nets to an ABA Championship a year later. Prior to his professional playing career, Skinner spent three years on the court at the University of Massachusetts from , becoming the only player in Minuteman history to be named a three-time All-Yankee Conference selection. A team captain and All-America Honorable Mention in , Skinner remains one of the most decorated players in UMass basketball history, concluding his career with 1,235 points, 749 rebounds and 320 assists in 79 games. Skinner was inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982, and his No. 30 jersey was retired by the Minutemen on Feb. 18, Skinner and his wife, Donna, have two grown children, Vaniecia and Andre.
