4 » Daily Dribbles 400 Career Victories Head Coach Al Skinner got win number 400 against North Carolina A&T as the Owls defeated the Aggies He s currently in his 24th season as a head coach. Strong Play at Home KSU s early schedule has been a grind as only four of the first 13 games were at home. After making it through the tough stretch of road games, now KSU will have a string of home games with three in a row starting December 22. The Owls are 3-2 on their home court this season as they are set to host North Georgia on New Years Eve. Double-Double Machine Through 14 games, Aubrey Williams is averaging 12.1 points and 10.9 rebounds with eight double-doubles. The eight double-doubles is tied for fifth most in the country and only two double-doubles behind the nation leaders. Freshmen Boosting Bench Play Johannes Nielsen has been a consistent boost off the bench this season for the Owls. He has scored in double figures four times and shoots at an incredibly consistent rate going from the floor making 66.7 percent of his shots. Against N.C. A&T, Nielsen scored eight of his 11 points in the final four minutes to help the Owls secure the victory. Another freshmen making a big impact is James Scott. In five games, he is averaging 8.0 points per game and has scored in double figures two times in around 17 minutes per game. Per 40 minutes of action, Scott is averaging 18.8 points per game. 1,000 Career Points After setting a single-season record with 579 points in his first season at Kennesaw State, Ray is closing in on 1,000 career points after 14 games this season. In his career at KSU and Quinnipiac, Ray has accumulated 989 points with 902 coming at KSU and 87 happening at Quinnipiac. Leading the ASUN Ray is leading the ASUN averaging 23.1 points per game. He has scored 30- plus points four times this season against UMBC, Alabama State, UMass and N.C. A&T. He has scored 20 points in nine of the 13 games. Against UMass, Ray scored 35 points and was one shy of tying a Kennesaw State single-season record set a couple seasons ago by Yonel Brown. Smart Outside Shooting Kennesaw State doesn t shoot a lot of threes, but when they do it s usually a good shot leading to a high shooting percentage from behind the arc. The Owls shoot 40.1 percent going from three-point land. The 211 attempts is the lowest in the ASUN by 62 attempts and is 221 attempts less than the league leader NJIT, who has shot 432 three pointers this season. Free Throws The Owls take advantage at the free throw line leading the ASUN shooting.727 as a team. There are seven players with over a 70 percent clip from the line and three over 80 percent. WIlliams posted 20 boards against Brewton- Parker in the Owls first victory of the Ray currently sits fourth in the country averaging 23.8 points per game. 5 » news & notes Efficient Post Play Aubrey Williams, Jordan Jones and Johannes Nielsen have been very efficient scoring the basketball. Combined the three of them are from the floor making 57 percent of their shots. Williams is averaging in points with 12.1 per game and Nielsen has scored in double figures four times. Fighting for a Cure For every three pointer Kennesaw State makes this season, Fifth Third Bank will donate $53 dollars to SU2C. After 14 games, KSU has made 85 threes equaling 4,505 dollars for donations. Masterson of the Three Nick Masterson has stepped up his offense this season averaging 11.6 points per game with a 42.4 percentage from the floor. Out of the team s 85 three pointers, Masterson has made 37 of them. There have been five games that he has made three+ three pointers and tied a school record with seven against Iowa. Dynamic Offensive Duo After Ray and Yonel Brown were the most potent duo on the offensive last season averaging over 37 points between them, Masterson has filled in that roll this season. Between the two, they are averaging 35.2 points per game. Out of the 85 threes that the team has made, this duo has hit 76 of them. Newcomer of the Year Ray is the first Kennesaw State player to win the Newcomer of the Year award since the A-Sun started to award it in The only other KSU student-athlete to win a post-season award was Andre Morgan when he won Freshman of the Year during the season. HOF Inductee This fall, former start player Terrence Hill was inducted into the Kennesaw State Hall of Fame. In his time at KSU, he helped Kennesaw State win the 2004 NCAA Division II Men s Basketball national championship, while also earning 2004 Division II All-American honors. He was also named the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year. ASUN Championship Final on ESPN & Westwood One For the first time since 2002, the ASUN Championship Final will be seen on ESPN after spending the past few seasons on ESPN2. The 2017 ASUN Final is set for Sunday, Mar. 5th at 3 PM. To go along with the ESPN coverage, Westwood One will air the conference final for the second-straight season on national radio. Reaching 100 Since Skinner has taken over, Kennesaw State has been very efficient and successful on offense. This season, the Owls are averaging 72.4 points per game shooting 44.9 percent from the floor. In the first season Skinner instituted his continuity offense, the Owls scored over 100 points in three games last season against Reinhardt, Lipscomb and North Florida. Since joining the division I ranks, KSU had never reached the century mark in a game. 6 HEAD COACH AL SKINNER Al Skinner, a former Division I national coach of the year and two-time BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year, was named the head coach of the Kennesaw State men s basketball program on April 26, In his first season at Kennesaw State and 23rd season as a head coach, Skinner had a big impact on the Owls team guiding them to a.500 record in the Atlantic Sun Conference for the first time since the season. The team won four of its final five regular season games, including beating the back-toback A-Sun Champions, North Florida. A big part of the success came from the guard play as Kendrick Ray and Yonel Brown both thrived under Coach Skinner as each of them set a new Division I single-season Kennesaw State points record with 579 and 578 points respectively. The leading duo in the A-Sun finished as one of three pairs in the country to average over 18 points per game with Ray averaging 18.7 ppg and Brown averaging 18.6 ppg. Both student-athletes were honored at the end of the season as they were named A-Sun Second Team All-Conference, and Ray was unanimously voted as the Newcomer of the Year. A current member of the NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Ethics Coalition, Skinner guided his teams to nine NCAA Tournament appearances and four conference titles during tenures at the University of Rhode Island and Boston College. His teams posted ten 20-plus win seasons. The winningest coach in BC history, Skinner spent 13 seasons at The Heights, compiling a (.560) record from He took Boston College to six NCAA Tournaments in a seven-year stretch, leading his team to the Sweet 16. Four of his teams finished the year ranked in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll, including the 2001 and 2007 clubs that concluded those seasons at No. 7. After guiding the Eagles to a 27-5 overall record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Skinner was named 2001 National Coach of the Year by Chevrolet/CBS, ESPN,Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). He also earned BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year honors. Al Skinner Head Coach 24th Year UMass 1974 Skinner earned BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year again in 2005 after leading Boston College to a 25-5 mark and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Prior to his time at BC, Skinner spent nine seasons as head coach at Rhode Island, leading the Rams to a (.523) mark. Skinner took over as head coach at URI in 1988 after serving as an assistant on the Rams bench from During his tenure in Kingston, he led Rhode Island to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths (1993 and 1997) and two more National Invitational Tournament (NIT) appearances (1992 and 1996), as well as three 20+ win seasons. He was named the Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year in and was inducted into the University of Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame in Skinner came to Kennesaw State after serving two seasons as associate head coach under longtime friend Tim O Shea at Bryant University where the Bulldogs compiled a (.540) overall record, including a (.647) mark in the Northeast Conference. Skinner first broke into coaching as an assistant at Marist College in 1982 following successful stints in the ABA and NBA from (Nets, Pistons, 76ers). Drafted by the ABA s New York Nets in the eighth round of the 1974 draft, Skinner was named to the ABA All-Rookie Team and led the Nets to an ABA Championship a year later. Prior to his professional playing career, Skinner spent three years on the court at the University of Massachusetts from , becoming the only player in Minuteman history to be named a three-time All-Yankee Conference selection. A team captain and All-America Honorable Mention in , Skinner remains one of the most decorated players in UMass basketball history, concluding his career with 1,235 points, 749 rebounds and 320 assists in 79 games. Skinner was inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982, and his No. 30 jersey was retired by the Minutemen on Feb. 18, Skinner and his wife, Donna, have two grown children, Vaniecia and Andre.
