Cats Look to Build on Team Supreme in 2004 In the late spring each year in the Bluegrass, a phone ringing in a small cubicle in the basement of Memorial Coliseum brings about a familiar question. "When's Midnight Madness?," inquires an anonymous voice. The call at Kentucky came a bit earlier than usual, hardly before last season's equipment had been stored for the summer months. Cat fans were anxious for 2004 following a historical 32-4 season that ended just short of the Final Four and a chance at the school's eighth national championship. Wildcat faithful began looking ahead to next season's squad that aims to follow up a perfect 19-0 sweep of Southeastern Conference opponents and 26- game win streak. The 2003 National Coach of the Year, Tubby Smith, returns after signing a new contract in April which will carry him through the 2011 season as one of the highest paid college coaches in the country. As Smith prepares for his seventh season in the Bluegrass, he will do so with a deep bench and strong leadership from 12 returning players. Five seniors lead the school into its second century of basketball greatness, including talented guards Cliff Hawkins and Gerald Fitch, arguably the strongest backcourt in the nation. "The strength of our club should be the depth in the backcourt, but at the end of the day, it will all come down to chemistry," Smith said. "We have some seasoned veterans who must gel with some inexperienced underclassmen. Our biggest challenge will be meshing the talents of Kelenna Azubuike, Brandon Stockton and Bernard Cote, along with our incoming freshmen, with those veterans. If that happens, we can reach our goals." Ah yes, the goals. The same evolving goals for each season at tradition-rich Kentucky: an SEC Championship, a league tournament title and a national championship. Leading the charge should be Fitch, who returns to the court as a three-year starter. He is UK's top returning scorer after averaging 12.3 ppg in 2003 and for his career, has shot 39.3% from three-point range. He's just 79 points shy of Kentucky's 1,000-point club and stands to become the 50th member of the elite group. Joining Fitch in the backcourt is Hawkins, a fellow senior who many have deemed the top returning point guard in the nation. Hawkins has averaged 3.2 assists per game over his career, including 3.8 per game last season. He was forced Coach Tubby Smith enters his sevenths season in the Bluegrass as the reigning National Coach of the Year. to sit out during the fall semester last year due to academic ineligibility, but was key to UK's success off the bench during the win streak. The two should have ample support with a guard-heavy roster. Among the weapons are Azubuike and Stockton, who both earned valuable playing time as freshmen. Azubuike has shown the ability to become an explosive offensive weapon, exhibited in his 16-point performance in an eight-minute stretch against Vanderbilt on Senior Day last spring. Stockton gained experience at point guard with the absence of Hawkins early last season and averaged 1.3 ppg while shooting (.909) from the charity stripe as a reserve. Antwain Barbour brings the most experience to the floor as a combo guard and forward. The junior college transfer enjoyed a solid start at Kentucky last fall, but was never able to regain his momentum after breaking his hand in early December. Both will have to help fill the void left by Keith Bogans, who led the team in scoring at 15.7 ppg. The Cats also can go seven deep at the forward position, highlighted by the return of both its starters from a year ago - Erik Daniels and Chuck Hayes. Daniels continued to blossom last season, averaging 9.5 ppg and 4.9 rpg at small forward, while Hayes was the Cats' leading rebounder at the power forward spot with 6.8 rpg. At 6-6, Hayes became the shortest leading rebounder at Kentucky since 6-5 Thad Jaracz averaged 8.3 rpg in 1966 for the fabled "Rupp's Runts." In support is Bernard Cote, a returning sophomore. Cote was able to earn time off the bench early in his freshman campaign and played in 25 games last year. Joining the returnees at forward are two newcomers in Bobby Perry and Sheray Thomas. Perry, a 6-7 Durham, N.C. product, has been regarded as one of the top-20 small forwards in his class by several recruiting publications and averaged 19.5 ppg over his career. Thomas, a native of Montreal, Quebec, becomes the third Canadian to ever play basketball at UK. Although Thomas played just two years in the United States, he averaged 21.0 ppg and 12.0 rpg as a senior at Riverdale Baptist in Maryland. The biggest question mark for the Wildcats entering the 2004 season is the center position. After losing big men Marquis Estill and Jules Camara, Kentucky will have to rely on some inexperienced players down low early in the season. Coach Smith will have the option of switching to a three-guard lineup and going small, or feature a pair of 7-footers, who makes their debut this fall. Shagari Alleyne and Lukasz Obrzut join the team as freshmen and become the first 7-footers to play for the Wildcats since Sam Bowie in the mid-'80s. Alleyne stands at 7-3 and possesses an 8-1 wingspan, but will need to polish his game and build his strength in order to make an impact for Smith. Obrzut, however, could be the sleeper of the class. At 7-1, the 20-year-old freshman UK Summer Preview 03 3

from Poland has a mature body and is able to also play away from the basket. What the two towering freshman must do is help compensate for the shot-blocking and rebounding efforts of Estill, who averaged 1.8 bpg and finished his career ranked sixth all-time in blocks at UK. Estill also departed as the school's all-time field-goal percentage leader at 60.1%. But with ample shooters and scorers returning, UK must find quality minutes from one of the two new big men in rebounding and defense to have its greatest chance for success. Though some pieces of the puzzle remain unclear as the Cats enter the fall, Smith knows that the one thing that must emerge is a strong corps of leaders. "We have to find someone from our group of veterans who can step up," Smith said. "In Cliff Hawkins, Gerald Fitch, Erik Daniels, Chuck Hayes, Josh Carrier and Antwain Barbour, we have a group of young men who now have to assume a greater role, a leadership role, if this team is going to be great." The Wildcats will especially rely on that leadership during a very rugged December schedule again this season. UK will participate in the Wooden Classic against UCLA, which is now coached by Ben Howland, the former Pittsburgh coach. The weekend onslaught continues with Michigan State in Detroit's Ford Field for "The Basketbowl" where a new basketball attendance record of 75,000 fans is expected. The Cats close Chuck Hayes returns as the top rebounder from the 03 UK squad, averaging 6.8 rpg as a sophomore. the month against Indiana at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis and archrival Louisville in Rupp Arena. Before the tough conference slate begins in January, UK will play host to North Carolina. Two weeks later, UK closes its non-conference slate on the road at Notre Dame. Kentucky's biggest obstacle in 2004, however, won't be who they see on the court, but possibly who they don't see. After the loss of Bogans, Camara and Estill, the Cats will return just 55.7% of their scoring productivity and 55.5% of their rebounding production. The success of this 101st edition of the Wildcats will be a direct correlation of how well they manage to fill the void left by the departed seniors. "This team has to develop an identity and a personality to be successful," Smith concluded. "They'll have to learn how to play without Keith, Jules and Marquis. After all, Bogans had been an important part of our offense for four years, so he's going to be difficult to replace." If the Wildcats can find a way to mold a deep roster of experienced players into a well-oiled machine, the goals could turn the question of Midnight Madness into March Madness. Cliff Hawkins is one of five seniors on the 2004 Kentucky team and looks to be one of the top point guards in the nation after averaging 3.8 apg as a junior. UK Summer Preview 03 4

Fitch, Hayes Named Pan-Am Finalists Senior guard Gerald Fitch and junior forward Chuck Hayes have enjoyed a busy summer. The two were named finalists for the 2003 U.S. Pan American Games Team after a tryout in late May in Colorado Springs, Colo. The finalists were selected by the USA Basketball Men s Collegiate Committee. Fitch was forced to return home early from the finalists camp in Orlando, Fla., on July 23 after re-aggravating a hernia. The hernia first developed after Fitch returned from the initial team tryout in late May, but the guard was cleared by doctors to continue on to the camp in Orlando. Team physicians performed surgery on the guard on on July 29 and expect him to make a full recovery before the fall semester. Hayes, however, was selected to continue on with the team to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic when the final squad was announced on July 25. The Pan American Games will be played Aug Sophomore Kelenna Azubuike also was invited to the tryout, but was not selected as a finalist. Fitch and Hayes were the only SEC players among the finalists. The squad will be coached by Michigan State s Tom Izzo, who will be assisted by Washington s Lorenzo Romar and Missouri s Quin Snyder. Smith Inks New Eight-Year Contract In mid-april, Tubby Smith signed a new eight-year contract running through the year 2011, that would be worth at least $2.5 million per year. The contract will make Smith one of the highest paid collegiate men's basketball coaches in the nation. The contract replaced his previous agreement, which ran through the 2007 season. Summer Hoops Notes The University will be responsible for Smith's base salary of $200,000 per year with his radio, television and endorsements beginning in 2003 at $1.55 million per year on an increasing scale. The contract automatically extends until 2013 if the basketball team participates in the Final Four during any year during the term of the agreement. Also included in the package are two retention bonuses. Should Smith fulfill the contract through April 2007, he will be entitled to a $1.5 million bonus, which had been a $1 million retention bonus in the previous agreement. If Smith coaches through the 2011 season, he will receive an additional bonus of $2.5 million. The contract includes many incentive bonuses for Smith, including for post-season appearances and academic progress. Bogans Finds NBA Magic Keith Bogans, who recently completed a stellar four-year career at UK, will continue his basketball career as a member of the NBA s Orlando Magic next year. Bogans was drafted 43rd overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in June s draft, but was traded a short time later to the Magic. The 6-5 guard completed his UK career as the No. 4 all-time leading scorer with 1,923 points. He will join former opponent Reece Gaines from UofL on the Orlando squad. The two faced off four times in college, with Kentucky winning three games. It marked the 13th time in the last 11 years that a UK player was taken in the annual draft. Prince, Bogans Shine in Summer League Former Kentucky standouts Tayshaun Prince and Keith Bogans had excellent performances in the 2003 Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando, July The 15-game league featured six squads, including Prince s Detroit Pistons, Bogans Orlando Magic, Minnesota, Miami, Milwaukee and Cleveland. Prince, who graduated from UK in 2002, led all players in scoring during the event, averaging 19.6 ppg in five games. Bogans, the 2003 SEC Player of the Year, was second with 19.4 ppg. The top overall draft pick, LeBron James, finished fourth for Cleveland in scoring with Keith Bogans became the 12th UK player selected in the NBA Draft in the last 10 years. He was chosen 43rd overall by Milwaukee before being traded to Orlando. 15.5ppg. Marquis Estill, who finished his eligibility at UK this spring and made the Miami Heat s summer roster, finished eighth in rebounding at 5.3 rpg. Downing Leaves UK for Ott Communications Kentucky Director of Media Relations Brooks Downing announced his resignation in late June as the head men s basketball SID to accept a position with Louisville-based Ott Communications. Downing, who has served as the chief spokesman for the men s basketball team for the past eight seasons, including two national championship runs, will develop a new sports marketing group for Ott and will work out of the company s Lexington office. Hobbs Named Associate Head Coach While the Kentucky staff remained in tact over the summer, one change was made to the existing group. Coach Tubby Smith promoted assistant coach David Hobbs to associate head coach in the off-season. Hobbs will begin his fourth season with the Wildcats in the fall and brings a bevy of experience to the table. He served as the head UK Summer Preview 03 5

coach at Alabama from , guiding the Tide to a record and two NCAA appearances. Smith and Hobbs became aquainted in the early 80s when both served as assistant coaches at Virginia Commonwealth under J.D. Barnett. Basketbowl Sells Out in July More than 19,000 public tickets for The Basketbowl, UK s game against Michigan State at Ford Field in Detroit on Dec. 13, were sold in just four days through the Ford Field Ticket Office, selling out the game at a basketball capacity crowd of 69,700. The game will be played at the home of the Detroit Lions in an attempt to set the world record for a basketball game. The court will be placed at the 50-yard line and the crowd is expected to top out at 75,000 including Ford Field suite holders, MSU and Kentucky pep bands and cheerleaders, media and stadium game-day personnel. Ticket sales topped over 50,000 during private sales in June. During that time, UK and MSU season ticket-holders and donors were given the option to buy tickets for the historic event. The world basketball attendance record is 75,000 set on Aug. 21, 1951, during a Harlem Globetrotters exhibition game played in Berlin Olympic Stadium in Germany. The largest crowd ever to watch an NCAA basketball game was 68,112 set on Jan. 20, 1990, when Notre Dame played Louisiana State in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. The largest to ever watch a UK game was 54,151 in the Louisiana Superdome during the 1993 Final Four. Murphy Named Assistant Coach at Manhattan Kevin Murphy, a former student manager and last year s special assistant for the men s basketball team, was named assistant coach at Manhattan College in June. Murphy, a native of Portland, Maine, served as a team manager under Bill Keightley from and was a practice player as a senior due to the Wildcats limited roster. After receiving his bachelor s degree from UK in communications in 2000, he spent a year in private business. Murphy joins former Wildcat Steve Masiello on staff with the Jaspers. Masiello was a walk-on point guard at UK from and was recently promoted to the top assistant s position at Manhattan. He also served as a graduate assistant to former UK assistant Shawn Finney at Tulane following his graduation. Gerald Fitch is the Wildcats top returning scorer, averaging 12.3 ppg as a junior in He also averaged 3.0 rpg and enters the 2004 season with three years of starting experience. Basketball Guide Earns Best in the Nation The 2003 Kentucky basketball media guide garnered "Best in the Nation" honors for the eighth time since 1992, the College Sports Information Directors announced in June. Brooks Downing and Mandy Polley of the UK Media Relations office wrote and compiled the 292-page book used by media representatives around the nation, while the UK Publications office and creative director Jamie Barker led the design on the project. --Go Cats!-- Returning Production Kentucky lost three seniors from its 2003 squad which advanced to the Elite Eight and finished with the final No. 1 ranking in the AP poll. However, the Cats return 12 lettermen and three starters from its SEC Championship squad. The statistics below reflect the returning production: Points 55.7% Rebounds 55.5% Assists 71.3% Blocks 39.8% Steals 69.4% UK Summer Preview 03 6

Smith Renews UK Contract After Sterling Season Tubby Smith's coaching in ranks among the very best in the 100 years of Kentucky basketball. But for the man who won the 1998 NCAA Championship in his first year in the Commonwealth, success is no stranger. Last season, Kentucky established the nation's longest win streak in seven years, highlighted by a sweep of the Southeastern Conference regularseason slate and tournament play (19-0), a feat that had not been accomplished in the league since His Wildcats finished No. 1 in the final Associated Press poll and Smith swept SEC and National Coach of the Year honors. Kentucky ended the season in the Elite Eight with a 32-4 record, becoming just the 11th team in school history to top the 30-win mark. His achievements have added to an eye-popping resume. Since arriving in 1997, Smith has led Kentucky to one national championship, four SEC crowns and four SEC Tournament titles, with no less than five Sweet 16 finishes in his six seasons. But it was in 2003 that the accolades arrived in a landslide. Smith snared all seven of the national honors recognized by the NCAA - AP, USBWA, Naismith, Basketball Times, The Sporting News, NABC, and CBS/Chevrolet. He became the first coach to sweep the list since Indiana's Bobby Knight captured all five in For good measure, Smith added honors from ESPN, Foxsports.com, the Black Coaches Association and College Sports Television. Smith s performance in 2003 not only won the attention of the national media, but also that of UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart. In April 2003, Smith was awarded a new eight-year contract that will be worth $2.5 million per year, making him the highest paid coach in the nation. The contract, which includes an escalating salary for radio, television and edorsements, replaces his old contract, which ran through the 2007 season. Over his 12 seasons as a head coach, the 52- year-old has had 10 consecutive 20-win seasons, which ranks fourth among active coaches. In 2002, he joined an elite group when he became the seventh head coach to win 250 games in 11 seasons or less, joining the likes of Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim and Nolan Richardson. Smith's career record is now (72.5%). In 2001, he totaled 100 wins quicker than any other Wildcat coach except Hall of Famer Adolph Rupp, reaching the plateau in 130 games. Since taking over the UK program, he has won 78 percent of his games despite playing a schedule that annually ranks among the nation's best. In NCAA Tournament play, Smith owns the fifth-best winning percentage among active coaches, trailing Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, among others, with a sterling 23-9 record. Even more impressive, Smith has averagedmore than 27 wins per season at Kentucky in his six seasons. In the SEC Tournament, he's 12-2 at UK, and he has won a league championship six times in his 12 years as a head coach. UK Coach Tubby Smith swept the National Coach of the Year honors in 2003 after guiding his Wildcats to a 32-4 record and an Elite Eight finish while compiling the nation s longest win streak at 26 games. Not even the bluest bloods of Wildcat basketball fandom would have guessed UK could continue its remarkable success after a national title in '96 and a runner-up finish in '97. After all, the team had lost six players over two seasons to the NBA and other key Cats to graduation. When Smith took the reins for the '98 season, he inherited a balanced roster loaded with role players. An early loss to Arizona dampened expectations. Three losses at Rupp Arena followed. UK then rebounded to win the 1998 SEC Eastern Division title and the overall SEC crown. One week later, UK rolled through the SEC Tournament in Atlanta with decisive wins over Arkansas and South Carolina. "Tubby Ball," a system of solid defense and rebounding, combined with his chess-match style of coaching, was on display. As a No. 2 seed in the '98 NCAA Tournament's South Region, UK cruised to the regional final to face top-seeded Duke with a third-consecutive trip to the Final Four hanging in the balance. The Blue Devils grabbed an 18- point lead in the first half and held a 17-point lead midway through the second half. UK's first opportunity for redemption against Duke since Christian Laettner's famous shot in '92 appeared to be over. But when Smith went to a smaller lineup to counter the quicker Duke players, the Cats stormed back to win, UK then rallied from a five-point halftime deficit against Stanford in the national semifinals before winning in overtime, Many pegged the contest as one of the most well coached games in the entire tournament. Then two days later, Utah had not only outrebounded the Wildcats 24-6 in the first half, but also led by 10, 41-31, at halftime. No team had ever come from behind by more than eight points in the championship game. Until Kentucky. The game plan wore out the Utes, and the "Comeback Cats" rallied to win, Smith accomplished the unexpected. He led the Wildcats to their second title in three years. He had become the first coach since Cincinnati's Ed Jucker in 1961 to win the national title in his first year at a school. Smith was named National Coach of the Year by Basketball Weekly and Co-SEC Coach of the Year by The Associated Press. The New York Athletic Club presented Smith with the prestigious Winged Foot Award given to the coach of the national champions after each season. In the off-season, he picked up the Parent of the Year Award by Parent Magazine, the Victor Award by the Black Coaches Association and was even voted the "Sexiest Male Public Figure" in a reader's vote in a local magazine. 9 nated when he was named the Kentucky Sportsman of the Year for 1998 in a statewide media vote, edging out the highly popular Tim Couch of the Kentucky football team. After earning high acclaim by winning the national title in his first season, Smith guided a team comprised of eight freshmen and sophomores to within eight points of UK's fourth consecutive Final Four appearance. Michigan State prevailed and the Wildcats were ousted in the 1999 Midwest Region final, UK's triumphs in the season included six wins over teams ranked in the top 11 with victories over No. 2 Maryland and No. 4 Auburn, and 13 wins over teams in the NCAA Tournament. When March arrived, Smith's squad went to work, winning its seventh SEC Tournament title in eight years. The third-seeded Wildcats then competed in their eighth consecutive NCAA Tournament, earning an overtime win against Kansas in the second round, perhaps the most exciting game of the tourney. UK finished with a 28-9 record, tying its own NCAA record of 132 wins in a four-year period. Since that time, the Wildcats have captured SEC Championships in both 2000, 2001 and The season began with a preseason No. 4 national ranking, but the Cats battled an inordinate amount of injuries and suspensions before being eliminated by Maryland, the eventual national champion, in the East Region Semifinals. This consistent success has become the standard for Tubby Smith. The native of Scotland, Md., was introduced as the Cats' 20th head coach on May 12, 1997, six days after Rick Pitino announced he was resigning to become president and head coach of the Boston Celtics. Kentucky is Smith's third head coaching stop. Previously, he revived two mediocre programs, Tulsa and Georgia, into NCAA title hopefuls. Prior to coming to the Bluegrass, he spent two seasons at Georgia, where he coached the Bulldogs to a (70.3%) record and the first back-to-back seasons of 20 wins or more in school history. Prior to Georgia, he coached four seasons at Tulsa, guiding the Golden Hurricane to Final 16 appearances his last two seasons. The season at Georgia was one his best coaching efforts. After losing eight seniors and all five starters from the year before, Smith led the youthful Dogs to a 24-9 record, equaling the school record for most wins in a season. UGA finished third in the SEC with a 10-6 record, just behind second-place Kentucky. And three of Georgia's nine losses came against the Wildcats in '97, including a loss in the SEC Tournament Championship game. Georgia finished the year ranked 17th in the final AP poll and earned a No. 3 seed in the Southeast Regional. In Smith's first year in Athens, Georgia advanced to the Final 16, where his team lost to eventual runner-up Syracuse on a last-second shot. It was the Bulldogs' first NCAA Tournament appearance in five years. His team ended the season overall and 9-7 in league play for a second-place finish in the Eastern Division. In the NCAA Tournament's opening round, eighth-seeded Georgia defeated No. 9 Clemson before toppling No. 1-seed Purdue to advance to the West Regional semifinals. There, the Dogs lost to Jim Boeheim's Orangemen in what many labeled the best game of the 1996 tournament. Before arriving in Georgia, Smith led Tulsa to a (64.8%) record and won consecutive Missouri Valley Conference regular-season titles in 1994 and '95. When he took over the Golden Hurricane in 1991, he had just five returning players. With a quick injection of new talent, he completed his first season by coaching Tulsa to the MVC Championship Game after finishing fourth during the regular season. Following a record in 1993, Tulsa won more than 20 games in each of Smith's last two seasons, captured first-place honors in the MVC with identical 15-3 marks and made consecutive trips to the Sweet 16. He earned the MVC's Coach of the Year award in both 1994 and '95. In his final year at Tulsa, Smith led the Golden Hurricane to a 24-8 record, marking the thirdhighest victory total in school history, and a No. 15 ranking in the final CNN/USA Today poll. Much of his success as a collegiate head coach has been measured by his teams' performances in the NCAA Tournament. Smith's 1994 Tulsa team upset UCLA in the tourney's first round before knocking off Oklahoma State. In '95, the Hurricane blew away Big-Ten power Illinois to open March Madness. His postseason success continued at Georgia where the Bulldogs defeated Clemson to open the '96 tournament before upsetting the top-seeded Boilermakers. Considered by many as one of the nation's top coaches, Smith was selected to help coach the 2000 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team in Sydney. He served as an assistant to Houston Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich as the Americans withstood high expectations to capture the gold medal. Currently, he serves on the NCAA Committee to study basketball issues, joining Duke's Krzyzewski and Oregon's Ernie Kent. He serves on the National Association of Basketball Coaches Board of Directors and in June 2000, spoke at a Congressional hearing on the issue of gambling in college sports. While he continues to make strides nationally in the sport of basketball, Smith's first impact on the Bluegrass came nine years before his national championship. When Pitino took over the Wildcats' program in '89, he sought an assistant coach who knew the South, and one name continued to surface -- Tubby Smith. Smith left his assistant coaching position at South Carolina and joined Pitino's first staff, which had the dubious honor of rebuilding a UK program that had been rocked by NCAA probation and player defections. With only eight scholarship student-athletes, none taller than 6-7, the staff molded the Cats into winners once again, exceeding expectations to record a mark. The following year, with Smith promoted to associate coach and UK still on probation, the Wildcats earned a 22-6 record, a final ranking of ninth in the AP poll, and an SEC-best 14-4 record. The members of those first two staffs that Pitino assembled formed an impressive group of future head coaches. Smith served alongside Ralph Willard of Holy Cross, North Carolina State's Herb Sendek, Florida's Billy Donovan and Bernadette Mattox, former coach of the UK women's team, while the Wildcats began the rebuilding effort that culminated with two championships in three seasons. Before coming to Kentucky in '89, Smith was an assistant coach for George Felton (a former UK assistant ) at South Carolina, where the Gamecocks notched a record during his three years. Prior to his stop in Columbia, Smith served as assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth for seven years, including six seasons under J.D. Barnett. In those seven seasons, VCU registered a record, won three Sun Belt Conference Championships and made five NCAA Tournament appearances. And under Barnett, Smith learned the principles of his ballline defense, a defense that in three of his first four years at UK held opponents to their lowest field goal percentages since Smith began his coaching career at Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Md., where he was head coach for four years and compiled a record. His next stop came at Hoke County High School in Raeford, N.C., where he recorded a mark in two seasons. A 1973 graduate of High Point (N.C.) College, Smith was an all-conference performer as a senior. He played under three different head coaches at High Point, including Barnett, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education. Smith is the sixth of 17 children raised on a rural farm in southern Maryland. He and his wife Donna, have three sons. Orlando (G.G.), 26, is now in the coaching profession in Hawaii. This summer, he married his college sweetheart, Lorie, who is beginning her medical residency. Saul, 24, recently finished a two-year career with the Columbus Riverdragons of the NBDL and Brian, 18, will attend Fork Union Military Academy in the fall. Coach Smith is very active in the community. The Tubby Smith Foundation, which he established to assist underprivileged UK Summer Preview 03 8

Wildcats Produce Historic Season in 2003 When Tubby Smith began the 2003 season, his most important goal was to bring a team to the floor that could play as a cohesive unit -- united on and off the court. What happened next was more than even Smith could have expected coming off a disappointing season filled with turmoil. Kentucky opened its 100th season of college basketball shorthanded at the Maui Invitational in late November. Junior point guard Cliff Hawkins sat out the team s first seven games for academic reasons and Erik Daniels missed the first four games for playing in a second sanctioned summer league. UK managed a third-place finish in Maui, beating Arizona State in the opener before losing to Virginia in the semifinals after shooting 2-for- 22 from three-point range. UK recovered to outgun Gonzaga, Without the help of Hawkins and Daniels, several newcomers were able to earn quality minutes right away as Bernard Cote and Kelenna Azubuike saw more than just sun and surf in Maui. In practice two days after the Cats returned, UK lost starting swingman Antwain Barbour to a broken left hand, but traveled to North Carolina, which had just won the Preseason NIT, and left with an impressive victory. UK continued a rugged December schedule with a loss at home to Michigan State after Tim Bograkos canned a three-pointer with 51 seconds remaining to give the Spartans the lead. in UK s throw-back game with retro uniforms. The Wildcats rebounded to earn an emotionally charged win over Indiana in Freedom Hall. The game saw IU coach Mike Davis ejected in the waning seconds after chasing an official onto the floor arguing what he believed to be a foul on one of his players. UK s return trip to Freedom Hall a week later to play the homestanding Louisville Cardinals would have a far different outcome. Despite leading at halftime, the Cats were handed their worst lost in the Tubby Smith Era, though it was the first time Smith had his full complement of Wildcats available. The Wildcats regrouped upon returning to Lexington, however, and began to string together one of the most impressive win streaks in college basketball. Among the victims of the Cats 26- game stretch were nine ranked opponents, including No. 1 Florida on Feb. 4, and three ranked foes on the road. One of the most impressive games of the season wasn t against a ranked foe, however. Kentucky reached what some termed a turning point at halftime of the Vanderbilt game in Nashville on Jan. 14. Down at the break, Kentucky outscored the Commodores in teh second half while allowing just four VU field goals to win the contest, UK added to its impressive run by winning the SEC Tournament while holding all three opponents under 40% shooting from the field. In fact, seven of the final 10 UK foes shot less than 40% from the field. Kentucky continued its defensive dominance in the NCAA Tournament, quickly disposing of IUPUI and Utah in Nashville to advance to the NCAA Midwest Regional in Minneapolis. There the Cats faced Big Ten champs Wisconsin in the semifinal and rode a career-best 28-point performance by senior Marquis Estill to a six-point victory. However, Kentucky suffered a blow in the first half against the Badgers as senior leader Keith Bogans went down with a high ankle sprain. He did not return to the game and finished with five points. With questions looming about Bogans status, the Cats prepared for a tough Marquette squad which had upset No. 2-seed Pittsburgh in the semifinal. When UK took to the court, Bogans was ready to go, fitted with a special brace. Despite a 15-point effort from the less than healthy leader, Kentucky could not overcome the hot-shooting Eagles and their leader, Dwyane Wade, who tallied a triple-double with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. The Cats ended the season with an loss and a 32-4 overall record. While the team was just a game short of the Final Four, it held the best record in the nation and turned in a season for the history books. Kentucky claimed its 24th Southeastern Conference Tournament title in 2003 after defeating Mississippi State in the title game. The Cats 19-0 record vs. conference opponents marked the first by an SEC team since UK Summer Preview 03 26
