Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT at Magness Arena (7,200). The Rams suffered a loss to the Pioneers at home last season, and just like they did vs. Loyola Marymount on Thursday, they're looking to right ship with a win on Sunday. Dawning a whole new look this season, Head Coach Ryun Williams and the Colorado State women s basketball team have hopes of becoming a top competitor in the Mountain West as Williams begins his second season with the Rams. The games will be broadcast live on AM 1410 KIIX. Matt Wozniak, now in his fifth season with the Rams, calls all the action. Live game video will also be available via Pioneer Vision at DenverPioneers.com. About Denver DU has struggled early this season with just one victory over Air Force, 72-64, on Nov. 16. The Pioneers have suffered three losses of five points or less: at home vs. Wyoming (73-70) and UC Irvine (78-73), and most recently on the road at Northern Colorado (74-71). In the loss at UNC on Wednesday, the Pioneers comeback attempt was spoiled by 27 team fouls. The Bears converted 26 of their 34 attempts from the charity stripe. DU sophomore Paige Bradley scored a careerhigh 24 points in the game. DU allows the opposition a.449 percentage from the field, including.358 from three-point range. Denver shoots a field-goal percentage of.403. Similar to the Rams, the Pioneers depth stretches across four players averaging double figures. DU is led by Kailey Edwards (13.7), Paige Bradley (12.4), Morgan Van Riper-Rose (11.7) and Theresa Wirth (11.4). Defensively Maiya Michel and Wirth lead Denver on the glass, with 9.1 and 8.1 rebounds per game, respectively. Junior guard Van Riper-Rose was absent from the Northern Colorado box score, Wednesday, after she went down with a leg injury vs. Montana on Nov. 27. Head Coach Kerry Cremeans enters her second year with the Pioneers. She took the helm last season after a successful eight-year stint as the associate Head Coach of Auburn. She has a career record to date. The team returns four starters and 10 letterwinners overall from a squad that finished with record last season, tying for sixth in the WAC. Series vs. the Pioneers Sunday s meeting between Colorado State and Denver will be the 25th game between the two schools. CSU is currently 15-9 over DU all-time, with a 5-5 tally in Colorado's capital city. The Pioneers have owned the series as of late, winning seven of the past eight matchups. The Rams last defeated DU in Denver in Last time vs. Denver (Dec. 20, 2012) In a defensive struggle, Colorado State fell to University of Denver at Moby Arena. The Rams (3-7) and Pioneers (5-6) both were off to a slow start, going into halftime 17-18, with CSU trailling by one point. The team shot a.278 percentage from the field on the night, being outshot by the Pioneers, who shot a 38.2 percent. Throughout the game, the lead changed eight times. Colorado State was holding on to a one-point lead with 4:18 left in the game, but lost it with 2:51 left and were unable to gain it back. Martin led the Rams, recording her ninth career double-double with 13 rebounds and 14 points, tying her career-high in rebounds for the third time. Martin also added two blocks and two steals. Sophomore Kara Spotton came off the bench adding six points and two assists, running into foul trouble early on in the game. Spotton fouled out late in the final half. Spotton wasn't the only Ram to run into foul trouble. Freshman Caitlin Duffy tallying three fouls early on and Martin adding four. Duffy recorded seven rebounds, a tying her career high, eight points and three steals. Mountain West Standings - 12/6 QUICK FACTS Conference Overall Team W-L Pct. H A W-L Pct. In the first half of the game, Colorado State was down against the Lions. From the field, the Rams were outshot 35.5 to 46.4 percent. Colorado State was able to keep their turnovers down, though, only giving the ball away six times, as opposed to the Lions' 12 turnovers in the first half of the game. Off of those turnovers, the Rams were able to gain 14 points. Coming out of the half, Colorado State picked up the pace of play tremendously, going on an 11-0 run in the first few minutes of play. In the second half of the game, the Rams improved their field-goal percentage immensely, shooting 55.2 percent. Martin continued to show her senior leadership as she led the Rams with 20 points, a season high. The 6-2 forward pulled down five rebounds and added four assists. With Martin's massive effort in the paint, Colorado State was able to put up 32 points in the paint, while the Lions had 24 points. Freshman Ellen Nystrom added 14 points to the Rams final score. Nystrom's layup in the final seconds of the game, followed by a made free-throw shot by sophomore Caitlin Duffy, iced the win for the Rams. Nystrom added four rebounds and four assists. Junior AJ Newton also added double-digit scoring figures to the Rams total score, putting up 13 points on the night, while also adding four assists and three rebounds. Duffy added seven points for the Rams, as well as five rebounds and one assist. So far in the season, this is the fifth game the Rams have played that has been decided by five points or less, and Colorado State is now 3-2 in those games. In last season's game against Loyola Marymount, Colorado State dug a hole too deep to crawl out in Los Angeles, falling Loyola Marymount's largest lead throughout the game was 13 points, tying the Rams largest deficit in a win so far this season. Tight Battles Colorado State has had its composure levels tested on the court early on, with scoring margins of five points or less in five games already this season. The Rams are 3-2 in close contests this year. The team is averaging 13.8 more points through seven games, from 56.3 in to 70.1 this year. In five of CSU's eight games the Rams have had one player score 20-plus points, and each time it's come from a different scoring threat. Date Opponent... Sam Martin (20) First Time In A Long Time CSU's.576 field-goal percentage vs. Drake on Nov. 16 was the team's best shooting performance against a Division-I school since the Rams shot.607 vs. Tennessee-Martin on Dec. 21, Gritt Ryder's 12p-10a double-double vs. Drake is the first points-assists double-double since Elizabeth English had the same performance exactly 12 years ago in Ryder is one of two players in the MW to have a double-figure assist game this season. The Rams also displayed their depth in the season opener vs. UCCS. It was the team's first overtime victory since Jan. 21, 2010 vs. UNLV. CSU followed up that performance with another extra-time win on Nov. 29 at Hawai'i. It was the first time the team played in two OT games in the same month since February 2003, and it was the first time the squad won both games in the same month since February Led by Nystrom's 20 points, six players tallied double fi gures, which is the first time since five or more hit that mark since Feb. 9, 2010 (Air Force). Both Nystrom (20p-10r) and Duffy (13p-10r) recorded double-doubles. The last time that happened also dates back to 2010 when CSU played Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Nov. 28. That was also the last time two players registered 10 or more rebounds. The Rams' 50 rebounds tied a team-high from last season, and the 22 offensive boards surpassed their best effort on the offensive glass last year, ranking 15th all-time in the record book. #FeedTheSwede Colorado State s starting freshmen tandem of Ellen Nystrom and Elin Gustavsson has proved to be an strong force early this season. Gustavsson is in the top five freshmen scorers in the Mountain West, and both are in the top three for rebounding among freshmen. Each has already produced a 20-point game this season, which marks the best individual start for any Ram since Kim Mestdagh's ( ) sophomore season when she scored 17 and 21 points in the first two contests in NCAA Rankings (as of Dec. 2) The Rams are ranked in the top 100, out of 343 teams, in five NCAA statistical categories: Misc. With over 20 seasons in coaching, including 18 as a head coach, Williams has compiled an impressive career record, with stops at South Dakota ( ), Wayne State College ( ) and Sheridan College ( ), leading his squads to six campaigns of 20 or more victories, four postseason berths and one conference championship. Before coming to Colorado State, Williams was South Dakota's head coach for four seasons. He led the Coyotes to a highly successful stretch during their transition to Division I competition, and helped them become one of the nation's premier defensive teams. A staple of the Coyotes under Williams has been defense, and that was no exception in They ranked second nationally in blocks per game (7.3), eighth in field-goal defense (33.2) and 12th in scoring defense (52.3), leading the Summit League in all three categories. The Coyotes qualified for the WNIT for the first time ever last season as a Division I program, which was their second straight postseason berth after competing in the Women's Basketball Invitational in South Dakota finished with a No. 97 rank in the RPI, the second-highest of any Summit League team and the highest mark in school history. Prior to arriving at USD in 2008, Williams spent 10 seasons at Wayne State, building that program into a perennial contender in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Williams took over a program that had won just 13 games the previous two seasons and turned it into an NCAA tournament team. His team's recorded 20 wins or more in three of his final four seasons and made appearances in the NCAA Division II North Central Region tournament in two of the last three seasons. While at Wayne State, he compiled a record (.632) and became the winningest women's basketball coach in school history. In , he guided the Wildcats to a 21-9 record, which included a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the fi rst round of the North Central Region he led his team to an upset of North Dakota for the fi rst win in the NCAA tournament in the school's history. In , Williams took Wayne State to its first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament, as the team notched its best season in school history by going They were 13-1 in NSIC play and won the NSIC tournament to earn automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. That season Williams was named the NSIC Coach of the Year. Williams' players have received plenty of postseason recognition. He has had players named WBCA All-America honorable mention, NSIC Player of the Year and NSIC Tournament MVP. Two players earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Year honors, two won the Dodie Martin and two were named the league's newcomers of the year. Before taking over at Wayne State, Williams was the women's head coach at Sheridan College (Wyo.) for three seasons. While there he was named the Wyoming Conference Coach of the Year twice and was the Region IX Coach of the Year. In 1993 he began his head coaching career at Sheridan when he served as the volleyball head coach and men's basketball assistant coach. In his time as the head coach of the volleyball program he put together a record. In 1995 Sheridan went 42-8, won the Region IX title and fi nished fi fth at the junior college national tournament. Williams garnered Wyoming Conference and Region IX Coach of the Year honors in 1994 and Sheridan is also where Williams began his collegiate playing career. He played two seasons at Sheridan, where he was an All-Region IX player as a sophomore. In addition he was a two-time All-Wyoming Conference performer and a twotime academic all-conference selection. He then transferred to South Dakota where he earned All-NCC honors after leading the nation in free throw percentage at 91.2 percent. Williams was also named academic all-conference as a junior and senior. As a high school senior at Campbell County High School, he was named Mr. Basketball for the state of Wyoming in A native of Gillette, Wyo., Williams earned his associate's degree from Sheridan in 1990, his bachelor's degree from South Dakota in 1992 and his master's degree from South Dakota in Williams and his wife, Lyndy, have two daughters, Natalie and Emily.
